This paper presents a formulation of a continuum model for so-called (stress or deformation) induced anisotropy in natural ice which, unlike computer-based Taylor-type models, can be incorporated in numerical simulations of large ice masses to account for the effects of this process on the flow of these bodies in a physical fashion. To do this, we treat natural ice as a rigid-elastic, non-linear inelastic material which can develop transverse isotropic behaviour (accounting for the simplest kind of induced anisotropy in natural ice masses), where the degree of such anisotropy at each point is controlled by the distribution of crystal glide-plane orientations there. This distribution is described by a so-called orientation-distribution function, for which an evolution relation can be derived. The central constitutive assumption of this formulation relates this distribution to the “structure” tensor representing the transverse isotropy of the material. On the basis of this relation, the model predicts in particular isotropic (e.g. classical Glen’s flow-law type) behaviour at a given point when the distribution of crystal glide-plane orientations is uniform there.

Microearthquakes at the base of slow-moving Ice Stream C occur many times more frequently than at the base of fast-moving Ice Stream B. We suggest that the microearthquake source sites are so-called “sticky spots”, defined as limited zones of stronger Subglacial material interspersed within a weaker matrix. The fault-plane area of the microearthquakes (O (102m2)) is therefore a measure of the size of the sticky spots. The spatial density of the microearthquakes (O (10 km-2)) is a measure of the distribution of sticky spots.

The average stress drop associated with these microearthquakes is consistent with an ice-stream bed model of weak subglacial till interspersed with stronger zones that support much or all of the basal shear stress. We infer a weak inter-sticky-spot material by the large distances (O (103 m)), relative to fault radius, to which the microearthquake stress change is transmitted.

The results of ground-based radio-echo sounding collected in 1995 and 1996-97 in the drainage basin of Lange Glacier, a tidewater outlet glacier on King George Island, Antarctica, are presented and discussed. Ice-thickness and bedrock-elevation maps, constructed for the upper non-crevassed part of the glacier, show a close relation between its surface and subglacial topography and indicate the main directions of ice runoff from this area where the ice thickness reaches 308 m. A retreat of the glacier front by 1 km since 1956 occurred against a background of climate warming by 1.4°C on the South Shetland Islands during the last five decades, while a neighboring unnamed glacier advanced by 0.6 km and the northern ice-cap margin on King George Island was approximately stationary. To understand the reasons for the different responses of these ice masses to current climate warming in this region of West Antarctica, further studies including mass-balance and ice-velocity observations and numerical modeling are needed.

We use numerical modelling of glacier mass balance combined with recent and past glacier extents to obtain information on Little Ice Age (LIA) climate in southeastern Tibet. We choose two glaciers that have been analysed in a previous study of equilibrium-line altitudes (ELA) and LIA glacier advances with remote-sensing approaches. We apply a physically based surface energy- and mass-balance model that is forced by dynamically downscaled global analysis data. The model is applied to two glacier stages mapped from satellite imagery, modern (1999) and LIA. Precipitation scaling factors (PSF) and air temperature offsets (ATO) are applied to reproduce recent ELA and glacier mass balance (MB) during the LIA. A sensitivity analysis is performed by applying seasonally varying gradients of precipitation and air temperature. The calculated glacier-wide MB estimate for the period 2000–12 is negative for both glaciers (–992±366 kgm–2 a–1 and –1053±258 kgm–2 a–1). Relating recent and LIA PSF/ATO sets suggests a LIA climate with ~8–25% increased precipitation and ~1–2.5°C lower mean air temperature than in the period 2000–12. The results only provide an order of magnitude because deviations in other input parameters are not considered.

Geomorphological and glaciological features are represented on a georeferenced satellite image mosaic of the Mount Murchison quadrangle, northern Victoria Land, Antarctica (73–74˚ S, 162–166˚30' E), at a scale of 1 : 250 000. Landforms and deposits of glacial and periglacial environments, forms related to mass wasting, wind action, weathering and geological structures are identified and mapped. The chronological sequence of landforms and deposits, morphography and lithology is also indicated. Glacier velocities (up to 180 ma–1) and ice-front fluctuations (1964–99) were determined by analysis of aerial photography and satellite imagery. Airborne radar surveys reveal that the greatest ice thickness (about 1500 m) is located in the grounding zone of Aviator Glacier. Up to 1000 mof ice bury the subglacial relief of Deception Plateau, Hercules Névé and the Deep Freeze Range. Snow accumulation rates (average = 170 kg m–2 a–1) exhibit an overall negative correlation with altitude and distance from the coast. The relationships among relict erosional landforms and volcanic activity provide chronological constraints for the palaeogeographic evolution of this sector of the Transantarctic Mountains.

Results are given of radio echo‐sounding of 53 glaciers of different sizes and glaciological regimes during 1974–75 and 1977–79 in Spitsbergen. Mountain glaciers have maximum ice thicknesses ranging from 90 to 350 m. Thicknesses up to 165 m, as well as the presence of overdeepened sections of the bed and subglacial ridges up to 100 m high are typical. Other glaciers have ice thickness values of up to 500 m (e.g. Veteranen) but on some sections of glaciers and ice caps depressions in the bed with ice thicknesses reaching 540 m have been found, which exceed the “background” thickness by 200 to 400 m. Subglacial relief of Vestfonna, Nordaustlandet, is very rough in its outer region but is rather smooth in the central part beneath the ice dome, where ice thickness reaches 385 m. Multiple correlation analysis of 15 glaciers indicates a number of significant relationships between the area of terminal and lateral moraines of glaciers and length, area, and, consequently, volume.

A regional hydrogeological study conducted by the Geological Survey of Canada acquired 35 line-km of 12-fold seismic reflection profiles on or adjacent to the Oak Ridges moraine, north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The three-dimensional geometry provided by these data aids in understanding the erosional and depositional processes that occurred beneath the Laurentide ice sheet during the late stages of glaciation. The seismic sections indicate large infilled channels in the subsurface which are interpreted as tunnel channels eroded by large, subglacial meltwater discharges. Two seismic profiles from different areas of the moraine show channel-cutting events of different ages and different types of infilling.

For ice-core drilling on high-elevation glaciers, lightweight and modular electromechanical (EM) drills are used to allow for transportation by porters or pack animals. However, application of EM drills is constrained to glaciers with temperatures well below the ice melting point. When drilling into temperate ice, liquid water accumulates in the borehole, hindering chip transport, filling the chip barrel and finally blocking the drill. Drilling into near-temperate ice is also problematic as pressure-induced melting can cause refreezing of meltwater on the drill which then easily gets stuck in the borehole. We developed a thermal drill compatible with the Fast Electromechanical Lightweight Ice Coring System (FELICS). The melting element consists of a coil heater, molded in an aluminum crown. Using the combined mechanical and thermal drill we obtained a 101 m surface-to-bedrock ice core from temperate Silvrettagletscher, Swiss Alps. The borehole with temperatures around 0°C was filled with meltwater. Power was supplied by two 2kW gasoline generators consuming a total of 70 L of alkylate fuel. Ice-core production rate was 1.8 mh−1. The drill produced non-fractured ice cores of excellent quality with a length of 70 cm and a diameter of 75–80 mm.

Granular, fresh-water ice was deformed at −40°C at 10−3 s−1 under confinement. Loading was applied such that confining stress, σ2 and σ3, were equal to each other and proportional to the highest stress, σ1; i.e. σ2 = σ3 = Rσ1. Two regimes were evident. At lower confinement, the fracture stress, σ1f, increases markedly as R increases. At higher confinement, σ1f increases less sharply. The transition occurs at about R = 0.15. Wing cracks were seen in the ice fractured within the low-R regime. The data are analyzed in terms of the frictional crack sliding-wing crack mechanism of brittle compressive fracture.

We used measurements of radar-detected stratigraphy, surface ice-flow velocities and accumulation rates to investigate relationships between local valley-glacier and regional ice-sheet dynamics in and around the Schmidt Hills, Pensacola Mountains, Antarctica. Ground-penetrating radar profiles were collected perpendicular to the long axis of the Schmidt Hills and the margin of Foundation Ice Stream (FIS). Within the valley confines, the glacier consists of blue ice, and profiles show internal stratigraphy dipping steeply toward the nunataks and truncated at the present-day ablation surface. Below the valley confines, the blue ice is overlain by firn. Data show that upward-progressing overlap of actively accumulating firn onto valley-glacier ice is slightly less than ice flow out of the valleys over the past ∼1200 years. The apparent slightly negative mass balance (-0.25 cm a-1) suggests that ice-margin elevations in the Schmidt Hills may have lowered over this time period, even without a change in the surface elevation of FIS. Results suggest that (1) mass-balance gradients between local valley glaciers and regional ice sheets should be considered when using local information to estimate regional ice surface elevation changes; and (2) interpretation of shallow ice structures imaged with radar can provide information about local ice elevation changes and stability.

An estimation of average mass balance of a high hanging glacier in the Swiss Alps was made by measuring volumes of ice avalanches originating from this glacier. Ice avalanches are this glacier’s predominant form of ablation. Since the volume of the glacier has not noticeably changed over the past few years, the annual ice loss due to ice avalanches can be taken as an indication of average total net acumulation above the ice cliff where the avalanches originate. The mass balance value, as determined by recording ice avalanches, compares well with values obtained by independent methods (measurements of firn stratigraphy in the cliff, direct accumulation measurements in the vicinity). No seasonal variation in the frequency of ice avalanche occurence was detected.

Though solar radiation is important for glacier mass-balance simulation, solar radiation data are not always available. As a result of analyzing meteorological data measured in the Himalaya and the Tibetan Plateau, a favorable correlation between precipitation and atmospheric transmissivity of solar radiation is found in terms of monthly values. Monthly mean solar radiation is derived from the relationship between atmospheric transmissivity of solar radiation and precipitation with input of monthly precipitation, latitude, skyline and time. The differences between estimated and observed monthly mean solar radiation are <40Wm−2 in most cases. However, the differences at some sites are significantly large. The error in the estimated solar radiation during the monsoon season can be large when the monthly mean precipitation rate is about 5 mm d−1. Though the error in the estimated solar radiation during the non-monsoon season is generally small due to low precipitation in the Himalaya and the Tibetan Plateau during this season, it can exceed 100 W m−2.

Observations of crevasse and crevasse trace geometry recorded along marginal shear zones of Sørsdal Glacier, East Antarctica, are presented with fine-spatial-resolution measurements of ice flow collected at three selected study sites. Strain grids established at each site, comprising 254 points, were repeatedly surveyed during the summers 2000/01 and 2001/02 using a semi-kinematic global positioning system technique with relative coordinate precisions at the order of ±2 cm in horizontal and ±5 cm in vertical. The annual results show ice-flow velocities of 2–114 m a–1 across a 2.7 km section of the Sørsdal margin. Comparable ice-flow velocities were also obtained using a Doppler system DORIS. At one study site, covering a planar area of 0.04 km2, a preliminary comparison is made between the crevasse pattern and strain-rate tensors computed for 64 discrete points using the method developed by Nye (1959). The comparison indicates that the most recent crevasses are directly related to the principal strain rates in this zone of simple shear.

Basal channels, which form where buoyant plumes of ocean water and meltwater carve troughs upwards into ice-shelf bases, are widespread on Antarctic ice shelves. The formation of these features modulates ice-shelf basal melt by influencing the flow of buoyant plumes, and influences structural stability through concentration of strain and interactions with fractures. Because of these effects, and because basal channels can change rapidly, on timescales similar to those of ice-shelf evolution, constraining the impacts of basal channels on ice shelves is necessary for predicting future ice-shelf destabilization and retreat. We suggest that future research priorities should include constraining patterns and rates of basal channel change, determining mechanisms and detailed patterns of basal melt, and quantifying the influence that channel-related fractures have on ice-shelf stability.

The Winkie Drill is an agile, commercially available rock coring system. The U.S. Ice Drilling Program has modified a Winkie Drill for subglacial rock and ice/rock interface coring, as well as drilling and coring access holes through ice. The original gasoline engine was replaced with an electric motor though the two-speed gear reducer and Unipress hand feed system were maintained. Using standard aluminum AW34 drill rod (for 33.5 mm diameter core), the system has a depth capability of 120 m. The drill uses forward fluid circulation in a closed loop system. The drilling fluid is Isopar K, selected for favorable properties in polar environment. When firn or snow is present at the drill site, casing with an inflatable packer can be deployed to contain the drill fluid. The Winkie Drill will operate from sea level to high altitudes and operation results in minimal environmental impact. The drill can be easily and quickly assembled and disassembled in the field by two people. All components can be transported by Twin Otter or helicopter to the field site.

Precise measurements of surface elevation on the Greenland ice sheet have been made almost every year since 1991 by an airborne scanning laser altimeter operated by NASA/Wallops Flight Facility. Results show substantial thinning over large areas near the coast, with a general increase in thinning rates since 1997, in the drainage basins of thinning glaciers, and a recent thickening in the southeast associated with very high snowfall in this region during 2003. Here, we present first results from the comparison of the aircraft data with similar measurements from the laser altimeter aboard NASA’s Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), which was launched in January 2003. These show very close agreement with results inferred solely from the aircraft measurements, indicating that accuracies are similar for both datasets. Broad spatial coverage by satellite, together with the baseline dataset of aircraft measurements, offers the prospects of routine surveys of ice-sheet elevation changes by ICESat and follow-on missions.

A model using upper-air meteorological variables in the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction and US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) re-analysis database is used to extend net balance bn back to 1948 for seven glaciers in southern Norway. The observational record of another glacier, Storbreen, began in 1948. Over the observational record of each of the seven glaciers, correlation with Storbreen estimates bn more accurately than the upper-air model does for four of them and less accurately for three. In all seven cases, however, an average of the model and the Storbreen correlation is more accurate than either alone, so the average is used to reconstruct bn for years when it was not observed. For the seven glaciers other than Storbreen, a combined series is formed from observations during their period of record and from reconstructed values prior to then back to 1948. There are three distinct sections in all eight bn series: prior to 1989; 1989–1995, when the North Atlantic Oscillation index was strongly positive; and after 1995. The 1989–95 mean bn was anomalously positive because of both decreased ablation and especially increased accumulation. The mean bn since 1995 has been anomalously negative because of increased ablation, whilst accumulation has been nearly the same as over 1948–88. The first principal component of the eight 1949–2005 bn series explains 78% of the total variance, and the second explains 12%. Over 1949–88 there were no substantial shifts in bn or in either winter balance bw or summer balance bs at any of the seven glaciers where observations began after 1948, nor were there in the Storbreen record. There is a distinction between the three glaciers that gained mass over 1948–2005 and the five that lost mass. Each of the three that gained had accumulation-area ratio AAR ≥ 0.64 and <0.7% of its area δS in the lowest tenth of its altitude range, while the five that lost had AAR ≤ 0.46 and 1.9 ≤ δS ≤ 4.4%. Because of these hypsometries, the five glaciers that lost mass now have an especially large ablation area.

A simple quasi-analytical model is used to study the sensitivity of the Antarctic ice sheet to climate change. The model is axisymmetrical and has a profile that only depends on the ice-sheet radius. The climatic conditions are represented by three parameters: the altitude of the runoff line, the accumulation rate above the runoff line, and the balance gradient below the runoff line. The ice sheet may extend into the sea. At the grounding line the ice velocity is assumed to be proportional to the water depth. For this set-up, an explicit algebraic expression for the total mass budget of the ice sheet can be derived. After calibration of the model with respect to the present-day ice sheet, equilibrium states are studied for a wide range of temperatures. The model predicts a maximum ice volume (+3.4%) for a temperature that is 2.5 K above the present value. For a temperature increase of 7 K, mass loss by runoff and calving are about the same. In this case the ice volume is about 82% of the current value. The ice-sheet model is used to correct the Cenozoic deep-sea temperature record (δ18O record from benthic foraminifera in ocean sediments) for Antarctic ice volume. The model is forced with the oxygen isotope record, which is then corrected for the calculated ice volume. Therefore, the resulting deep-sea temperature and Antarctic ice-volume curves are mutually consistent. It is concluded that for the last 35×106 years the δ18O record truly is a mixed temperature/ice-volume record, in which the contributions from these parameters have the same order of magnitude.

In spite of their importance to global climate and sea level, the mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet and the dynamics of the coast of Antarctica are largely unknown. In 1990, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Scott Polar Research Institute. U.K., began a long-term coastal mapping project in Antarctica that is based on analysis of Landsat images and ancillary sources. The project has live objectives: (1) to determine coastline changes that have occurred between the mid-1970s and the late 1980s/early 1990s; (2) to establish an accurate base-line series of 24 1: 1 000 000 scale maps that define the glaciological characteristics of the coastline: (3) to determine velocities of outlet glaciers, ice streams and ice shelves: (4) to compile a comprehensive inventory of outlet glaciers and ice streams: and (5) to compile a 1: 5 000 000 scale map of Antarctica derived from the 24 maps. Analysis of images used in producing the first five of the 24 maps has shown that ice fronts, iceberg tongues and glacier tongues are the most dynamic and changeable features in the coastal regions of Antarctica. Seaward of the grounding line of outlet glaciers, ice streams and ice shelves, the floating margin is subject to frequent, large calving events and rapid flow. Although calving does occur along ice walls, the magnitude of their change on an annual to decadal basis is generally not discernible on Landsat images; therefore, ice walls can be used as relatively stable reference features for measuring other changes along the coast. Velocities of outlet glaciers, ice streams and ice shelves range from 0.1 to several kilometers per year.

An Antarctic Circumpolar Wave (ACW) is simulated by a global coupled ocean-atmosphere model. Time-longitude diagrams of anomalies in sea-surface temperature (SST) and sea-surface salinity (SSS) show that anomalies propágale eastward, taking 20-30 years to encircle the pole. The time taken is 2-3 times longer than indicated by observations, due to the relatively slow speed of the modelled Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). High-SSS anomalies correspond to high-SST anomalies and high-density anomalies, and thus to low sea-surface height anomalies, indicating that salinity IS a dominant factor for dynamics with in the Southern Ocean and is indispensable for understanding the mechanism of the ACW. Sea-ice formation is suppressed southward of warm, saline surface-water regions. High sea-ice concentration anomalies correspond to thick sea-ice anomalies. Empirical orthogonal function analyses of SSTanomalies for both model and observation show that the dominant mode in the Southern Ocean has a spatial pattern closely related to El Niño activity. Sea-level pressure (SLP) anomalies propagate eastward with the ACW. High SLP anomalies in the atmosphere correspond to low-density anomalies 111 the ocean. The ACC has clockwise geostrophic velocity anomalies over high-density anomaly regions with upwelling. Both heat and salt are transported from the deep layer to the surface layer by upwelling. This could suppress sea-ice formation directly. Anomalous horizontal advection of heat and salt by geostrophic velocity anomalies in the ACC appears to influence the anomalies in SST, SSS and sea ice.
