Rotated principal components of the 500 hPa geopotential heights in the Euro-Atlantic sector are used as indicators of circulation pattern intensity. Daily snow-cover depth data for the years 1951–95 from 71 eastern European stations are examined. Maps of linear correlation coefficient between monthly change in snow depth and rotated principal components are presented. The positive and negative extremes of each circulation pattern are analyzed, and positive and negative snow-depth signals indicated. A daily analysis of relationships between snow depth and circulation pattern is performed for three locations. The strongest impact of the atmospheric circulation on changes in snow depth is observed in the south and west of the study area, where the eastern European (EE) and central European circulation patterns are found to have the greatest impact. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) impact on the snow depth in eastern Europe is limited to the beginning and the end of winter. Snow cover has low variability in northeastern Europe (where the Scandinavian (SC) pattern is of greatest importance) and low sensitivity to change in the atmospheric circulation. The decrease in snow-cover depth observed in spring is related to the NAO, SC and EE patterns, the latter being important for snow-cover depth fluctuations over northeastern Europe in April.

High-resolution seismic reflection (HRSR) data acquired over the Pesotum Bedrock Valley in central Illinois, USA, helped construct the seismic stratigraphy of a valley fill and the overlying sediments. Integrating these data with drilling and borehole geophysics allowed us to develop a seismo-stratigraphic classification for sediments on undulating and folded bedrock. Seven seismo-stratigraphic units that overlie the bedrock surface were characterized. Seismic units A and B include glacial sediments of multiple Pleistocene glaciations above the Pesotum Bedrock Valley, which completely mask the feature. Seismic units C–F, the valley fill, primarily include tills and glacial lake sediment deposited during the earliest Pleistocene glaciations and preglacial alluvium and colluvium that is draped over in situ weathered bedrock. The preservation of conformable-lying glacial and preglacial deposits and paucity of sand and gravel in the buried valley strongly indicate that little or no incision by glacial meltwaters has occurred. These observations contrast markedly with interpretations from buried valleys elsewhere in North America and northern Europe where valley fills contain significant deposits of sand and gravel in tunnel valleys. The HRSR data assisted the characterization and analysis of heterogeneous sedimentary sequences over a buried valley where existing subsurface information was limited. The extent of Pleistocene-age glacial lakes is inferred from the lateral continuity of silt and clay units.

The Arctic sea-ice cover has undergone a significant decline in recent decades. The melt season is starting earlier, ice is thinner and seasonal ice dominates. Here we examine the effects of these changes on the solar heat input to the upper ocean in ice-covered Arctic waters from 1985 to 2014. Satellite observations of ice concentration, onset dates of melt and freeze-up and ice age, are combined with ice thicknesses from the PIOMAS model and incident solar irradiance from reanalysis products to calculate the contributions of open ocean and ice to the solar heat input in the upper ocean. Of the total, 86% of the area has positive trends for solar heat input to the ocean through leads due to decreases in ice concentration. Only 62% of the area shows positive trends of solar heat input to the ocean explicitly through the ice. Positive trends are due to thinning ice, while negative trends occur in regions where the ice-free season has lengthened. The annual total solar heat input to the ocean exhibits positive trends in 82% of the area. The spatial pattern of the cumulative annual total solar heat input is similar to the pattern of solar heat input directly to leads.

Ice-sheet basal ice is warmer than that above because of the heat from the Earth’s interior. The stresses acting on the basal ice are greatest. In addition, the basal ice often contains debris consisting of silt and small stones picked up from the rock over which the ice flows. Because the base is the warmest part of an ice sheet and the stress there is greatest, flow rates in the basal ice are large and often contribute most of the ice movement. It is therefore important, for accurate modelling of the ice sheets, to know whether the debris within the basal ice enhances or retards the flow of the ice. In this paper, we describe laboratory deformation tests in uniaxial compression and in simple shear, on sand-laden ice. We find no significant dependence of flow rate on sand content (up to 15% volume) in the stress range 0.13–0.5 MPa and temperature range –0.02 to –18.0°C. Further work needs to include laboratory tests on debris-laden ice extracted from the polar ice sheets. This work is underway.

During the Norwegian Antarctic Research Expedition of 1978–79, a number of experiments were carried out using side-scanning solar techniques for under-water mapping of icebergs, ice fronts, and ice walls, and for studies of active ploughing areas off ice fronts. This paper presents the techniques and some results, together with views on operational and environmental aspects of using side-scanning sonar in the Antarctic. From the sonographs it is possible to measure depths of icebergs and ice fronts, and to estimate the magnitudes of shape anomalies. Vertical profiles of ice fronts show great variations depending on whether they are grounded or floating. Also, the acoustic signatures vary according to the elapsed time since calving.

A 181 m deep ice core drilled in 1994/95 on the south dome of Berkner Island, Antarctica, was analyzed for stable isotopes, major ions and microparticle concentrations. Samples for ion chromatography were prepared by using a novel technique of filling decontaminated sample from a device for continuous ice-core melting directly into the sample vials. The core was dated through identification of volcanic horizons and interpolative layer counting. The core, together with a similar core from the north dome, reveals a 1000 year history of relatively stable climate. Temporal variations in the two cores deviate from each other owing to changing patterns of regional-scale circulation; the best correspondence between them is found for MSA–. δ18O, accumulation rate and a sea-salt proxy show only negligible correlation, which suggests a complex meteorological setting. Increasing annual accumulation is observed for the last 100 years. A period of increased sea-salt concentrations started around AD 1405, as has also been observed in other cores. Microparticle concentrations are on average 1220 particles (>1.0 μm diameter) mL–1; they are enhanced from AD 1200 to 1350, possibly because of a higher atmospheric mineral dust load or because local volcanic activity was stronger than previously thought. Microparticles and NH4+ show marked but multiple and very irregular sub-annual peaks; long-term stacking of 1 year data intervals yields seasonal maxima in austral spring or mid-summer, respectively. Post-depositional redistribution was observed for MSA, NO3– and F– at volcanic horizons.

An anisotropic-ice flowline model is applied to a flowline through Swiss Camp (69.57° N, 49.28° W), West Greenland, to estimate the dates of internal layers detected by radio-echo sounding measurements. The effect of an anisotropic-ice fabric on ice flow is incorporated into the steady-state flowline model. The stress–strain-rate relationship for anisotropic ice is characterized by an enhancement factor based on the laboratory observations of ice deformation under combined compression and shear stresses. By using present-day data of accumulation rate, surface temperature, surface elevation and ice thickness along the flowline as model inputs, a very close agreement is found between the isochrones generated from the model and the observed internal layers with confirmed dates. The results indicate that this part of the Greenland ice sheet is primarily in steady state.

The main homogenization schemes used to model the behaviour of polycrystalline ice are assessed by studying the particular case of a two-dimensional polycrystal which represents natural S2–columnar ice. The results of the uniform-stress, uniform-strain-rate and one-site self-consistent models are compared to finite-element computations. The comparisons were made using the same model of grain, described as a continuous transversely isotropic medium, in the linear and non-linear cases. The uniform-stress and uniform-strain-rate models provide upper and lower bounds for the macroscopic fluidity which are too far from each other to be useful when a degree of anisotropy relevant to ice is considered. Although the self-consistent model gives a weak representation of the interaction between a grain and its surroundings, due to the strong anisotropy of the ice crystal, the resulting macroscopic behaviour is found to be acceptable when compared to the results from finite-element computations.

Gravity change on a glacier surface is a composite of several effects (e.g. melting and accumulation of snow and ice, redistribution of mass with depth by refreezing of meltwater and height and thickness changes of the snow and ice layers). Models and equations necessary to estimate the measured gravity change due to different effects are presented, and the propagation of observational errors is evaluated. The paper presents experiences with ground-based gravity measurements carried out on Hardangerjøkulen, Norway, in spring and autumn 2007. It was found that the vertical gradient of gravity contributes most to the uncertainty in the determined mass change. With present instrumentation, gravity can be measured with the required accuracy to determine the mass loss to ∼10% of the loss determined by conventional mass-balance measurements. Improvements in field procedures to achieve the required accuracy for measuring the mass/density changes directly, combining gravity measurements and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), are discussed.

A recently developed theory of post-nucleation conversion of an air bubble to air-hydrate crystal in ice is applied to simulate two different types of air-hydrate formation in polar ice sheets. The work is focused on interpretation of the Vostok (Antarctica) ice-core data. The hydrostatic compression of bubbles is the rate-limiting step of the phase transformation which is additionally influenced by selective diffusion of the gas components from neighboring air bubbles. The latter process leads to the gas fractionation resulting in lower (higher) N2/O2 ratios in air hydrates (coexisting bubbles) with respect to atmospheric air. The typical time of the post-nucleation conversion decreases at Vostok from 1300-200 a at the beginning to 50-3 a at the end of the transition zone. The model of the diffusive transport of the air constituents from air bubbles to hydrate crystals is constrained by the data of Raman spectra measurements. The oxygen and nitrogen self-diffusion (permeation) coefficients in ice are determined at 220 K as 4.5 × 10−8 and 9.5 × 10−8 mm2 a−1, respectively while the activation energy is estimated to be about 50 kJ mol−1. The gas-fractionation time-scale at Vostok, τF ∼300 a, appears to be two orders of magnitude less than the typical time of the air-hydrate nucleation, τz ∼30-35 ka, and thus the condition for the extreme gas fractionation, τF ≪ τz is satisfied. Application of the theory to the GRIP and GISP2 ice cores shows that on average, a significant gas fractionation cannot be expected for air hydrates in central Greenland. However, a noticeable (statistically valid) nitrogen enrichment might be observed in the last air bubbles at the end of the transition.

Prediction of future changes in dynamics of the Earth’s ice sheets, mass loss and resultant contribution to sea-level rise are the main objectives of ice-sheet modeling. Mass transfer from ice sheet to ocean is, in large part, through outlet glaciers. Subglacial topography plays an important role in ice dynamics; however, trough systems have not been included in bed digital elevation models (DEMS) used in modeling, because their size is close to the model resolution. Using recently collected CReSIS MCoRDs data of subglacial topography and an algorithm that allows topographically and morphologically correct integration of troughs and trough systems at any modeling scale (5 km resolution for SeaRISE), an improved Greenland bed DEM was developed that includes Jakobshavn Isbræ, Helheim, Kangerdlussuaq and Petermann glaciers (JakHelKanPet DEM). Contrasting the different responses of two Greenland ice-sheet models (UMISM and SICOPOLIS) to the more accurately represented bed shows significant differences in modeled surface velocity, basal water production and ice thickness. Consequently, modeled ice volumes for the Greenland ice sheet are significantly smaller using the JakHelKanPet DEM, and volume losses larger. More generally, the study demonstrates the role of spatial modeling of data specifically as input for dynamic ice-sheet models in assessments of future sea-level rise.

Proglacial environments are ideal for studying the development of soils through the changes of rocks exposed by glacier retreat to weathering and microbial processes. Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents as well as soil pH and soil elemental compositions are thought to be dominant factors structuring the bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities in the early stages of soil ecosystem formation. However, the functional linkages between C and N contents, soil composition and microbial community structures remain poorly understood. Here, we describe a multivariate analysis of geochemical properties and associated microbial community structures between a moraine and a glaciofluvial outwash in the proglacial area of a High Arctic glacier (Longyearbreen, Svalbard). Our results reveal distinct differences in developmental stages and heterogeneity between the moraine and the glaciofluvial outwash. We observed significant relationships between C and N contents, δ13Corg and δ15N isotopic ratios, weathering and microbial abundance and community structures. We suggest that the observed differences in microbial and geochemical parameters between the moraine and the glaciofluvial outwash are primarily a result of geomorphological variations of the proglacial terrain.

Surface mass-balance and geometry data are key to quantifying the climate response of glaciers, and confidence in data synthesis and model interpretations and forecasts requires data from as wide a range of locations and glacier types as possible. This paper presents measurements of surface elevation change at the Svalbard surge-type glacier Finsterwalderbreen, by comparing a 1990 digital elevation model (DEM) with a surface GPS profile from 2003. The pattern of elevation change is consistent with that previously noted between 1970 and 1990, and reflects the continued quiescent-phase evolution of the glacier, with mass loss in the down-glacier/receiving area of up to –1.25mw.e. a–1, and mass gain in the up-glacier/reservoir area of up to 0.60 mw.e. a–1; the area-weighted, mean change for the whole glacier is 0.19mw.e. a–1. The spatial pattern of elevation increase and decrease is complex, and the boundary between thickening and thinning determined by combining GPS and DEM data does not appear to correspond with the equilibrium-line altitude determined from surface mass-balance measurements. There is no evidence yet of a decrease in the rate of reservoir area build-up driven by mass-balance change resulting from the warmer winter air temperatures, and decreased proportion of snowfall in total precipitation, noted at meteorological stations in Svalbard.

The Deep Ice Sheet Coring (DISC) drill developed by Ice Coring and Drilling Services under contract with the US National Science Foundation is an electromechanical ice-drill system designed to take 122mm ice cores to depths of 4000 m. The new drill system was field-tested near Summit camp in central Greenland during the spring/summer of 2006. Testing was conducted to verify the performance of the DISC drill system and its individual components and to determine the modifications required prior to the system’s planned deployment for coring at the WAIS Divide site in Antarctica in the following year. The experiments, results and the drill crew’s experiences with the DISC drill during testing are described and discussed.

All available data on suspended sediment concentration and sediment discharge for Central Asian rivers have been used to estimate the small-grained sediment discharge from glaciated areas. Glacial streams discharge the bulk of suspended material during the period of intensive melting (July to September). There is a good exponential relationship between the suspended sediment concentration (or sediment discharge) and air temperature over glaciers. The area of the largest glacier in the watershed is another factor influencing the silt content and sediment run-off. Its contribution is smaller than that of air temperature. Yearly sediment run-off for glacial rivers in the Pamir and Tien Shan has been computed. Highest values are from the Pamir with many rivers yielding 3000 tonnes km–2 (11 200 tonnes km–2 for the Vukhsh river). The highest run-off in Tien Shan is 2 000 tonnes km–2 for the Chatkal river.

During the 2018/19 Antarctic field season, the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) Basal conditions on Rutford Ice Stream: BEd Access, Monitoring and Ice Sheet History’ (BEAMISH) project drilled three holes through the Rutford Ice Stream, West Antarctica. At up to 2154 m, these are the deepest hot water drilled subglacial access holes yet created, enabling the recovery of sediment from the subglacial environment, and instrumenting the ice stream and its bed. The BEAMISH hot-water drill system was built on extensive experience with the BAS ice shelf hot-water drill and utilises many identical components. With up to 1 MW of heating power available, the hot water drill produces 140 L min−1 of water at 85°C to create a 300 mm diameter access hole to the base of the ice stream. New systems and processes were developed for BEAMISH to aid critical aspects of deep access drilling, most notably the creation of cavities interlinking boreholes at 230 m below the surface and enabling water recirculation throughout the deep drilling operations. The modular design of the BEAMISH drill offers many benefits in its adaptability, redundancy, and minimal logistical footprint. These design features can easily accommodate the modifications needed for future deep, clean access hole creation in the exploration of subglacial environments.

Ice coring of temperate and polythermal glaciers demonstrates some limitations of most electromechanical (EM) and thermal electric (TE) drills. Most TE drills are heavy, require a heavy power system, work slowly and cannot operate in boreholes going through the cold–temperate ice transition. Antifreeze thermal electric drills (ATED) are capable of operating in polar ice caps, polythermal and temperate glaciers, in boreholes filled with water and/or hydrophilic fluids. Performance of the ATED drill can be improved by using an open-top core barrel and low-power and narrow-kerf coring head. ATED-type drills can be modified for an open-top core barrel equipped with low-power coring head and include a new scheme for drilling-fluid circulation using two pumps. A small metering pump releases pure ethanol above the top of the drill, and a second pump enables circulation of the borehole fluid, an ethanol–water solution (EWS), above the kerf. Use of a narrow-kerf coring head reduces power requirements and makes it possible to design a lightweight drilling system that includes the EM and TE drills for shallow and intermediate-depth drilling.

Dielectric anisotropy in ice Ih was investigated at 9.7 GHz with the waveguide method. The measurement of dielectric permittivity was made using single crystals collected from Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska. The result of the measurement shows that ϵ′‖c, the real part of dielectric permittivity parallel to the c axis, is larger than ϵ′⊥c the real part of dielectric permittivity perpendicular to the c axis. This tendency is similar to that at low frequencies in the region of the Debye relaxation dispersion. It can be proposed that ϵ′‖c>ϵ′⊥c in the HF, VHF and microwave frequency range. ϵ′‖c and ϵ′‖c depend slightly upon temperature but the dielectric anisotropy, ∆ϵ′=ϵ′‖c-ϵ′⊥c, is constant and becomes 0.037 (±0.007). Based on the present results, a simple caculation indicates that the maximum power reflection coefficient caused by the dielectric anisotropy is about −50 ∼ −80 dB, which is significantly larger than the power reflection coefficient observed in the ice sheet by radio-echo sounding, about −70 ∼ −80 dB. This leads to a conclusion that dielectric anisotropy is one of the dominant causes of internal reflections.

A passive seismology experiment was conducted across the main overdeepening of Storglaciären in the Tarfala valley, northern Sweden, to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of basal microseismic waveforms in relation to known dynamics of this small polythermal sub-arctic glacier. The high ablation rate made it difficult to keep geophones buried and well coupled to the glacier during the experiment and reduced the number of days of good-quality data collection. The characterization of typical and atypical waveforms showed that the dominant waveforms were from near-surface events such as crevassing. Waveforms resembling basal microseismic signals were very rare, and seldom observed on more than two seismic stations simultaneously. The analysis of waveforms, amplitudes and particle motions suggested a near-field origin for most events. Even though basal sliding is known to occur in the overdeepening, no convincing examples of basal waveforms were detected, suggesting basal microseismic signals are rare or difficult to detect beneath polythermal glaciers like Storglaciären. We discuss the reasons for failing to locate basal signals, consider the origin of common waveforms and make recommendations for setting up passive seismology experiments on glaciers with high ablation rates.

The Arctic winter seasonal sea ice (WSSI) concentration from 1979 to 2019 is derived from passive microwave data. Based on Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis, the WSSI time series includes regionally different trends, abrupt shifts and interannual variations. The time series of the first EOF mode (PC1) mainly represents the WSSI trend, which is characterized by an increase, particularly in the Pacific sector. PC1 confirms two abrupt shifts in WSSI in 1989 and 2007, with a variance of 31%. After 2007, the large-scale atmospheric circulation anomaly shows a strengthened wavenumber 3 structure at high latitudes associated with a mid-tropospheric low-pressure anomaly in central and western Siberia and a high-pressure anomaly in eastern Siberia in summer and autumn. These patterns have promoted the increased transport of moist static energy to the central Arctic and contributed to increased near-surface air temperatures that may enhance ice melting in summer and reduce ice growth in autumn and winter. The changes in ice melt and growth have had opposite effects in the Pacific and Atlantic sectors: WSSI has increased in the Pacific sector due to the replacement of multi-year ice by WSSI, and decreased in the Atlantic sector due to the replacement of WSSI by open water.
