The reflection, absorption and transmission of ultraviolet light by a sea-ice cover strongly impacts primary productivity, higher trophic components of the food web, and humans. Measurements of the incident irradiance at 305, 320, 340 and 380 nm and of the photosynthetically active radiation were made from April through September 1998 as part of the SHEBA (Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean program) field experiment in the Arctic Ocean. In addition, observations of snow depth and ice thickness were made at more than 100 sites encompassing a comprehensive range of conditions. The thickness observations were combined with a radiative transfer model to compute a time series of the ultraviolet light transmitted by the ice cover from April through September. Peak values of incident ultraviolet irradiance occurred in mid-June. Peak transmittance was later in the summer at the end of the melt season when the snow cover had completely melted, the ice had thinned and pond coverage was extensive. The fraction of the incident ultraviolet irradiance transmitted through the ice increased by several orders of magnitude as the melt season progressed. Ultraviolet transmittance was approximately a factor of ten greater for melt ponds than bare ice. Climate change has the potential to alter the amplitude and timing of the annual albedo cycle of sea ice. If the onset of melt occurs at increasingly earlier dates, ultraviolet transmittance will be significantly enhanced, with potentially deleterious biological impacts.

The causes and nature of ice-sheet radio-echo internal reflections at deep layers in polar ice sheets are discussed, based on the dielectric properties of ice that have been measured at microwave frequency and radio frequency. The reflection coefficients of electromagnetic waves in ice sheets due to two causes the change in permittivity induced by changes in crystal-orientation fabrics with depth, and changes in conductivity induced by changes in acidity with depth - were derived respectively as a function of the frequency used in radar sounding and the temperature of ice, and both were compared quantitatively. It is shown that at single-plane boundaries the reflection coefficients due to the former cause are independent of frequency and temperature and that they are large enough to produce dominant internal reflections. In contrast, reflection coefficients due to the latter cause strongly depend on frequency and temperature. Since they are inversely proportional to the frequency, the latter cause can be dominant only when frequencies below about 60 MHz are used. Examination of previous observational data has suggested that not only changes in acidity but also changes in crystal-orientation fabrics exist at depths corresponding to the dates of earlier volcanic eruptions.

We analyzed ice cores from both northern and southern polar regions to determine the concentrations of nitrous oxide in the pre-industrial and ancient atmospheres from about 150 years to 3000 years B.P. We found that the pre-industrial concentration of nitrous oxide remained constant over the period we studied and that the average atmospheric concentration was 285 ± 1 ppb volume (90% confidence limits), representing about 2100 Tg (2100 × 1012g) of N20 in the atmosphere, whereas the average concentration in 1984 was about 307 ppb volume or 2260 Tg. This is a change of 22 ppb volume (160 Tg), or about 8%, between pre-industrial and present times. Now the rate of change is between 0.7 and 0.9 ppb volume/year or 5 and 6.5 Tg/year, which is a slow increase of about 0.3% per year. The changes observed are probably caused by increasing use of fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil, and perhaps to a lesser extent by the use of nitrogen fertilizers in recent years. The atmospheric lifetime of N2O is probably between 100 and 150 years. The pre-industrial concentrations, present levels, and a lifetime of 100 years are consistent with natural sources, mostly soils and oceans, of about 22 Tg/year and the present anthropogenic sources of about 8.7 Tg/year. In the next 50 years we expect nitrous oxide levels to reach 360–390 ppb volume, or about 16–25% more than present.

Observations from basal water-pressure sensors along the length of Bench Glacier, Alaska, USA, show that diurnal fluctuations of water pressure are seasonal and restricted to summer. Most notable about these fluctuations is their disappearance in the late summer and early autumn, long before the seasonal end of diurnal meltwater input. Here we present data documenting the end of diurnal water-pressure fluctuations during the 2002 and 2003 melt seasons. The end of diurnal fluctuations occurred abruptly in multiple boreholes spaced meters to kilometers apart. There was no obvious spatial progression of termination events, and a clear correlation with meteorological forcing or discharge in the outlet stream was not apparent. After diurnal pressure fluctuations ended, basal water pressure returned to a high, generally steady, value either in an irregular pattern or by a distinct increase. This high water pressure was interrupted by episodic, acyclic events throughout the autumn before becoming stable and high in winter.

This paper presents the application of a pulsed Doppler radar for the measurement of dynamic properties of snow and ice avalanches. The instrument was developed and built by the Institute of Communications and Wave Propagation, Technical University Graz, and is operated by the Austrian Institute for Avalanche and Torrent Research (AIATR), Innsbruck. The data acquired by this radar during field campaigns are used to verify and optimize avalanche models and simulation tools. As well as describing the radar’s technical principle, how the dynamic parameters are measured and presented to the user and how these data can be used to accomplish the determination of avalanche velocity and runout distance, the paper deals with the participation of the radar in a successful full-scale snow-avalanche experiment in Ryggfonn, Norway, and evaluates the collected data. This measurement campaign was a joint experiment by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, Oslo, and AIATR.

The metamorphism of seasonal snow is classically considered as limited by vapour diffusion in the pore phase. To account for the lack of knowledge of the ice–vapour reaction coefficient near 0°C, the assumption of a reaction-limited metamorphism was first tested in three-dimensional simulations at low and very low temperature gradients; however, the validity of such results is difficult to verify experimentally. By a reasoned use of traditional iterative schemes, vapour diffusion is now simulated in three dimensions on tomographic snow data, mapping the gradient of vapour pressure near the grains. Repeating this process may provide a way to simulate the isothermal metamorphism without grain packing at a reasonable expense of computation time. Preliminary results are compared with existing computations made within the reaction-limited hypothesis.

Several different types of laterally extensive debris bands occur along the western terminus region of the Matanuska Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A. An ice-bed process, which to our knowledge has not previously been recognized and described, forms the most common and most prominent type of debris band at Matanuska Glacier’s terminus. The debris bands are composed of one or several millimeter-thick laminations of silt-rich ice having much higher sediment content than that of the surrounding ice. Samples of these bands and their surrounding englacial ice have been analyzed for anthropogenic tritium (3H), oxygen-18 (δ18O), and deuterium (δD).We interpreted the laminated, silt-rich debris bands as basal fractures, along which silt-laden, glaciohydraulically supercooled and pressurized waters flowed, healing the fractures by ice growth. This process is analogous to the inward growth of hydrothermal quartz from the sides of an open fracture.

The history of ice velocity and calving front position of Daugaard Jensen Gletscher, a large outlet glacier in East Greenland, is reconstructed from field measurements, aerial photography and satellite imagery for the period 1950-2001. The calving terminus of the glacier has remained in approximately the same position over the past ∼50 years. There is no evidence of a change in ice motion between 1968 and 2001, based on a comparison of velocities derived from terrestrial surveying and feature tracking using sequential satellite images. Estimates of flux near the entrance to the fjord vs snow accumulation in the interior catchment show that Daugaard Jensen Gletscher has a small negative mass balance. This result is consistent with other mass-balance estimates for the inland region of the glacier.

The effect of the oceanic heat capacity on global temperature response to external forcing is studied by considering a CO2-induced warming. The heat flux into the ocean is calculated using a box-diffusion model, earlier established for simulating the global carbon cycle. The calculated transient warming due to CO2 produced by fossil fuel until 1980 is 0.20 to 0. 26K, or about 50% of the value for radiative equilibrium, corresponding to a delay of 16 to 24 years. Analyses of CO2 in ice cores suggest a lower pre-industrial concentration, e.g. 265 ppm, than previously assumed (c. 290 ppm). The transient temperature increase until 1980 calculated for this case is about twice that for a case which starts from 297 ppm. Comparison with observations since 1880 shows that a long-term warming trend might be due to CO2, but the residual scatter unexplained by CO2 is still large. Finally the different thermal behaviour of oceans and continents is accounted for in a schematic way, considering heat exchange between them. The results indicate stronger temperature variations over the continents than over the sea.

The heat budget over the ice-covered area of the southern Sea of Okhotsk is estimated from in situ meteorological and ice observation for four years, 1996−99. The data are from about 1 week in early February in each of four years. Ice-thickness distributions required for calculating the heat budget are quantitatively obtained from video analysis. A one-dimensional thermodynamical model is used to calculate the heat flux. The total heat flux is obtained by summing up the area-weighted heat flux of each ice-thickness category. In addition, to determine the characteristics of the heat budget in this region, we also calculated the heat budget in the northern Sea of Okhotsk using Special Sensor Microwave/Imager ice-extent data and European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts meteorological data, and compared the results. Our investigations show the following characteristics in the southern Sea of Okhotsk: (1) Due to relatively thin ice thickness, the average turbulent heat flux is upward. (2) Thin ice and open water contribute significantly to the total turbulent heat flux. (3) Thermodynamic ice growth is limited to about 1 cm d−1 on average. (4) The heat budget is largely characterized by abundant solar radiation. The first, third and fourth results are characteristic of this region located at a relatively low latitude, while the second one is similar to that for polar regions.

For operational snow-cover simulations, an adequate modelling of the evolution of buried weak layers is of crucial importance. Therefore, the processes governing snow metamorphism within weak layers before and after burial must be known in detail. At the study site of the Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research, 2540 ma.s.l., a 2 cm thick weak layer of column-grown cup-shaped crystals formed beneath a thin crust in mid-January 1996. Exposed to near-surface processes for about 4 weeks, the layer was buried on 8 February and persisted in the snowpack until mid-April. Numerous temperature profiles and characterizations of both the weak and the adjacent layers were performed in situ. Snow-grain samples, as well as larger snow blocks, were taken to the cold laboratory for further analysis of the texture. The shear strength of the buried weak layer was also investigated by means of shear-frame tests. The field observations and measurements are compared with model simulations of snow temperature and stratigraphy. The comparison shows potential and problems in the modelling of weak-layer evolution.

Techniques for mapping the distribution of buried glacier ice are discussed and the results, from a study carried out within the framework of flood protection work in the Italian Alps, are presented. Bottom temperatures of the winter snow cover (BTS) primarily indicate the heat flow conditions in the underlying ground and mainly depend on the presence or absence of an ice layer beneath the surface. Determination of BTS values is therefore an inexpensive method for quickly mapping the near-surface underground ice in areas where there is 1 m or more of winter snow cover. At greater depths, and/or when more detail is required, geoelectrical resistivity soundings and seismic refraction soundings are most commonly used to investigate underground ice. A combination of the two sounding techniques allows the vertical extent and the main characteristics (frozen ground, dead glacier ice) to be determined in at least a semi-quantitative way. Complications mainly arise from irregularity in the horizontal extension of the studied underground ice bodies, and they may have to be overcome by expensive core drillings and borehole measurements. Widespread occurrence of buried glacier ice was observed in morainic deposits, surrounding an ice-dammed lake near Macugnaga, Italy.

Previous attempts to derive the Antarctic surface net accumulation distribution from atmospheric-moisture fluxes, in reasonable agreement with the observed distribution, have encountered many difficulties. The present analysis uses the Australian Bureau of Meteorology Global Atmospheric Assimilation and Prediction Scheme (GASP), which has been operational since 1989, to derive the net air-mass and moisture fluxes over the Antarctic. It is shown that the annual mean net surface accumulation closely resembles the glaciologically observed distribution and provides a physical basis for the observed pattern, through the moisture transports. The variations with latitude and elevation and through the annual cycle are also well reproduced. Although some mass-closure errors still exist, they are expected to become insignificant with the new generation of improved analysis schemes. Consequently the atmospheric analyses can provide a sound basis for both assessing the performance of global climate models in simulating Antarctic accumulation rates and monitoring long-term changes which may occur with global warming.

Recent measurements conducted on Erebus Glacier Tongue (EGT) have enabled improvements to be made to previous analyses of earlier data (Holdsworth 1974). The use of LANDSAT imagery and controlled aerial photography up to 1978 have enabled glacier flow rates and hence strain-rates to be determined more accurately than before. Re-analysis of the stress and strain-rate data leads to flow law constants which are now more compatible with those of Thomas (1973). The thinner ice appears to be “softer” than the thicker ice. Bending of EGT appears to be the result of current pressure exerted on the south side of the glacier, and computed bending strains seem to account for most of the observed curvature of EGT.

Basal ice melting predominates over any possible refreezing; melt rates along the south edge exceed basal melt rates by a factor of 5-10. Short-period, pseudo-elastic deformations occurring in EGT as a result of ocean wave-induced motion may be responsible for continually activating crevasses and producing the apparent “softening” effect in the creep of the thinner ice. Such oscillations may also lead to the calving of EGT although recent observations suggest that a hinge-line calving due to horizontal bending of EGT may be just as likely.

This paper describes the early stages in the development and testing of a spatio-temporal rule-based model of snow transport by wind over complex terrain. The model uses a cell-based approach and takes into account a range of meteorological, snow-pack and topographic variables. Simple rules are used to determine movement of material from cell-to-cell within the model.

A geographic information system is utilized in modelling wind vectors and the influence of topography upon those vectors, and creating the resulting pattern of snow accumulation at a resolution of 50 m. These patterns of accumulation have been compared with empirical work in the field and, although field data were limited, a good qualitative correlation has been found; for example, modelled accumulations correlate with known areas of accumulation such as gullies and hollows.

Frontal oscillations since the beginning of the 20th century are known at Glaciar Perito Moreno, an eastward outlet glacier of Hielo Patagónico Sur (southern Patagonia ice field). In 1900, the calving front was located about 1 km from the opposite bank. From 1935 to 1988, ruptures of ice-dams occurred at intervals of 1–5 years. Although this glacier has thus oscillated, it can be regarded as having been in a rather stable condition during the last half-century. Ice thickness in the ablation area has also remained unchanged from 1990 to 1996. The near-steady behavior of Glaciar Perito Moreno may be attributed to a regulating effect of the calving rate, namely, a decrease in the ablation amount due to calving with a retreat of the glacier.

Using 12 m long ablation poles, ice-flow velocities at the ablation area were measured several times in 1993 and 1994. The velocity in the early summer (November) was found to be slightly larger than the annual mean. It is concluded that basal sliding is significant throughout the year at this temperate glacier, with large fluctuations within a short period.

This paper presents a sequential evaluation of snow microstructure and its associated thermal conductivity under the influence of a temperature gradient. Temperature gradients from 28 to 45 Km–1 were applied to snow samples having a density range 180–320 kgm–3. The experiments were conducted inside a cold room in a specially designed heat-flux apparatus for a period of 4weeks. A constant heat flux was applied at the base of the heat-flux apparatus to produce a temperature gradient in the snow sample. A steady-state approach was used to estimate the effective thermal conductivity of snow. Horizontal and vertical thick sections were prepared on a weekly basis to obtain snow micrographs. These micrographs were used to obtain snow microstructure using stereological tools. The thermal conductivity was found to increase with increase in grain size, bond size and grain and pore intercept lengths, suggesting a possible correlation of thermal conductivity with snow microstructure. Thermal conductivity increased even though surface area and area fraction of ice were found to decrease. The outcome suggests that changes in snow microstructure have significant control on thermal conductivity even at a constant density.

In order to understand and solve the ‘warm-ice problem’ in deep ice-core drilling, we applied the metal-cutting theory to ice and estimated the heat generated during ice coring taking into account the mechanical and thermal properties of the ice and cutters. We found that (1) most of the heat in cutting is generated by shear deformation at the shear plane of ice, and the heat could increase the chip temperature by several degrees; (2) the rake angle of the cutter has more influence on the temperature increase in chips than the barrel rotation speed and penetration pitch; (3) if the cutter is made of a material with larger thermal conductivity, the temperature increase in the chips can be reduced; and (4) if the density of the liquid is less than the density of ice, the cutting chips sink to the bottom and the friction heat generated by the drill head and slush can raise the ambient temperature of the drill head by several degrees.

Non-uniformity of a temperature field in a 30 cm deep artificial snow cover in a wind tunnel was produced by keeping a selected cross-section, perpendicular to the wind direction, at a temperature different to that in the cold room. Quasi-steady-state temperature distributions in the snow around this cross-section were observed with and without wind, and were significantly different. The difference was attributed to the influence of an air flux inside the snow cover. The mechanism of this influence is discussed. Several temperature conditions and wind speeds over the snow surface were studied. It was concluded that the wind produced the air flux in the pore space of snow, and the air-flux velocity increases with wind speed. The calculated values of the horizontal air-flux velocity in the pore space of snow were of the order of l0–2 m s"1 and decreased with depth.

Successful hot-water drilling in the Antarctic is predicated on utilization of the abundant water supply available in the form of the Antarctic ice sheet. For WISSARD (Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling) field operations, a snowmelting system was developed that could adequately provide water for a 1000 kW hot-water drill. The system employs ∼100 kW of waste heat from a 225 kW generator to melt snow for initial water (known as seed water) to prime the drill’s high-pressure pumps and water heaters; once the water heaters can be engaged in snowmelting, enough water can be supplied directly to the WISSARD drill to successfully melt a 40 cm diameter hole through 800 m of ice.
