Let $\theta $ be an irrational real number. The map $T_\theta : y \mapsto (y+\theta ) \,\mod \!\!\: 1$ from the unit interval $\mathbf {I} = [0,1[$ (endowed with the Lebesgue measure) to itself is ergodic. In 2002, Rudolph and Hoffman showed in [Uniform endomorphisms which are isomorphic to a Bernoulli shift. Ann. of Math. (2) 156(1) (2002), 79–101] that the measure-preserving map $[T_\theta ,\mathrm {Id}]$ is isomorphic to a one-sided dyadic Bernoulli shift. Their proof is not constructive. A few years before, Parry [Automorphisms of the Bernoulli endomorphism and a class of skew-products. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys.16 (1996), 519–529] had provided an explicit isomorphism under the assumption that $\theta $ is extremely well approached by the rational numbers, namely,

Whether the explicit map considered by Parry is an isomorphism or not in the general case was still an open question. In Leuridan [Bernoulliness of $[T,\mathrm {Id}]$ when T is an irrational rotation: towards an explicit isomorphism. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 41(7) (2021), 2110–2135] we relaxed Parry’s condition into

In the present paper, we remove the condition by showing that the explicit map considered by Parry is always an isomorphism. With a few adaptations, the same method works with $[T,T^{-1}]$.

In this paper, we reduce the logarithmic Sarnak conjecture to the $\{0,1\}$-symbolic systems with polynomial mean complexity. By showing that the logarithmic Sarnak conjecture holds for any topologically dynamical system with sublinear complexity, we provide a variant of the $1$-Fourier uniformity conjecture, where the frequencies are restricted to any subset of $[0,1]$ with packing dimension less than one.

We study the behavior of the co-spectral radius of a subgroup H of a discrete group $\Gamma $ under taking intersections. Our main result is that the co-spectral radius of an invariant random subgroup does not drop upon intersecting with a deterministic co-amenable subgroup. As an application, we find that the intersection of independent co-amenable invariant random subgroups is co-amenable.

In this paper, we will introduce the ‘grid method’ to prove that the extreme case of oscillation occurs for the averages obtained by sampling a flow along the sequence of times of the form $\{n^\alpha : n\in {\mathbb {N}}\}$, where $\alpha $ is a positive non-integer rational number. Such behavior of a sequence is known as the strong sweeping-out property. By using the same method, we will give an example of a general class of sequences which satisfy the strong sweeping-out property. This class of sequences may be useful to solve a long-standing open problem: for a given irrational $\alpha $, whether the sequence $(n^\alpha )$ is bad for pointwise ergodic theorem in $L^2$ or not. In the process of proving this result, we will also prove a continuous version of the Conze principle.

Inspired by the phase transition results for non-singular Gaussian actions introduced in [AIM19], we prove several phase transition results for non-singular Bernoulli actions. For generalized Bernoulli actions arising from groups acting on trees, we are able to give a very precise description of their ergodic-theoretical properties in terms of the Poincaré exponent of the group.

Let $G_\Gamma \curvearrowright X$ and $G_\Lambda \curvearrowright Y$ be two free measure-preserving actions of one-ended right-angled Artin groups with trivial center on standard probability spaces. Assume they are irreducible, i.e. every element from a standard generating set acts ergodically. We prove that if the two actions are stably orbit equivalent (or merely stably $W^*$-equivalent), then they are automatically conjugate through a group isomorphism between $G_\Gamma$ and $G_\Lambda$. Through work of Monod and Shalom, we derive a superrigidity statement: if the action $G_\Gamma \curvearrowright X$ is stably orbit equivalent (or merely stably $W^*$-equivalent) to a free, measure-preserving, mildly mixing action of a countable group, then the two actions are virtually conjugate. We also use the works of Popa and Ioana, Popa and Vaes to establish the $W^*$-superrigidity of Bernoulli actions of all infinite conjugacy classes groups having a finite generating set made of infinite-order elements where two consecutive elements commute, and one has a nonamenable centralizer: these include one-ended nonabelian right-angled Artin groups, but also many other Artin groups and most mapping class groups of finite-type surfaces.

Let $({\mathbb X}, T)$ be a subshift of finite type equipped with the Gibbs measure $\nu $ and let f be a real-valued Hölder continuous function on ${\mathbb X}$ such that $\nu (f) = 0$. Consider the Birkhoff sums $S_n f = \sum _{k=0}^{n-1} f \circ T^{k}$, $n\geqslant 1$. For any $t \in {\mathbb R}$, denote by $\tau _t^f$ the first time when the sum $t+ S_n f$ leaves the positive half-line for some $n\geqslant 1$. By analogy with the case of random walks with independent and identically distributed increments, we study the asymptotic as $ n\to \infty $ of the probabilities $ \nu (x\in {\mathbb X}: \tau _t^f(x)>n) $ and $ {\nu (x\in {\mathbb X}: \tau _t^f(x)=n) }$. We also establish integral and local-type limit theorems for the sum $t+ S_n f(x)$ conditioned on the set $\{ x \in {\mathbb X}: \tau _t^f(x)>n \}.$

We study the measurable dynamical properties of the interval map generated by the model-case erasing substitution $\rho $, defined by

A probability measure-preserving action of a discrete amenable group G is said to be dominant if it is isomorphic to a generic extension of itself. Recently, it was shown that for $G = \mathbb {Z}$, an action is dominant if and only if it has positive entropy and that for any G, positive entropy implies dominance. In this paper, we show that the converse also holds for any G, that is, that zero entropy implies non-dominance.

We present a quantitative isolation property of the lifts of properly immersed geodesic planes in the frame bundle of a geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifold. Our estimates are polynomials in the tight areas and Bowen–Margulis–Sullivan densities of geodesic planes, with degree given by the modified critical exponents.

We extend Katok’s result on ‘the approximation of hyperbolic measures by horseshoes’ to Banach cocycles. More precisely, let f be a $C^r(r>1)$ diffeomorphism of a compact Riemannian manifold M, preserving an ergodic hyperbolic measure $\mu $ with positive entropy, and let $\mathcal {A}$ be a Hölder continuous cocycle of bounded linear operators acting on a Banach space $\mathfrak {X}$. We prove that there is a sequence of horseshoes for f and dominated splittings for $\mathcal {A}$ on the horseshoes, such that not only the measure theoretic entropy of f but also the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathcal {A}$ with respect to $\mu $ can be approximated by the topological entropy of f and the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathcal {A}$ on the horseshoes, respectively. As an application, we show the continuity of sub-additive topological pressure for Banach cocycles.

We construct measures of maximal u-entropy for any partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism that factors over an Anosov torus automorphism and has mostly contracting center direction. The space of such measures has finite dimension, and its extreme points are ergodic measures with pairwise disjoint supports.

We provide an explicit $\mathcal {S}$-adic representation of rank-one subshifts with bounded spacers and call the subshifts obtained in this way ‘minimal Ferenczi subshifts’. We aim to show that this approach is very convenient to study the dynamical behavior of rank-one systems. For instance, we compute their topological rank, the strong and the weak orbit equivalence class. We observe that they have an induced system that is a Toeplitz subshift having discrete spectrum. We also characterize continuous and non-continuous eigenvalues of minimal Ferenczi subshifts.

Using the idea of local entropy theory, we characterize the sequence entropy tuple via mean forms of the sensitive tuple in both topological and measure-theoretical senses. For the measure-theoretical sense, we show that for an ergodic measure-preserving system, the $\mu $-sequence entropy tuple, the $\mu $-mean sensitive tuple, and the $\mu $-sensitive in the mean tuple coincide, and give an example to show that the ergodicity condition is necessary. For the topological sense, we show that for a certain class of minimal systems, the mean sensitive tuple is the sequence entropy tuple.

The ergodic decomposition theorem is a cornerstone result of dynamical systems and ergodic theory. It states that every invariant measure on a dynamical system is a mixture of ergodic ones. Here, we formulate and prove the theorem in terms of string diagrams, using the formalism of Markov categories. We recover the usual measure-theoretic statement by instantiating our result in the category of stochastic kernels. Along the way, we give a conceptual treatment of several concepts in the theory of deterministic and stochastic dynamical systems. In particular, ergodic measures appear very naturally as particular cones of deterministic morphisms (in the sense of Markov categories), and the invariant $\sigma $-algebra of a dynamical system can be seen as a colimit in the category of Markov kernels. In line with other uses of category theory, once the necessary structures are in place, our proof of the main theorem is much more intuitive than traditional approaches. In particular, it does not use any quantitative limiting arguments, and it does not rely on the cardinality of the group or monoid indexing the dynamics. We hope that this result paves the way for further applications of category theory to dynamical systems, ergodic theory, and information theory.

We introduce a notion of sensitivity with respect to a continuous real-valued bounded map which provides a sufficient condition for a continuous transformation, acting on a Baire metric space, to exhibit a Baire generic subset of points with historic behavior (also known as irregular points). The applications of this criterion recover, and extend, several known theorems on the genericity of the irregular set, in addition to yielding a number of new results, including information on the irregular set of geodesic flows, in both negative and non-positive curvature, and semigroup actions.

In this paper, we study the ergodicity of the geodesic flows on surfaces with no focal points. Let M be a smooth connected and closed surface equipped with a $C^{\infty }$ Riemannian metric g, whose genus $\mathfrak {g} \geq 2$. Suppose that $(M,g)$ has no focal points. We prove that the geodesic flow on the unit tangent bundle of M is ergodic with respect to the Liouville measure, under the assumption that the set of points on M with negative curvature has at most finitely many connected components.

We examine multiple ergodic averages of commuting transformations with polynomial iterates in which the polynomials may be pairwise dependent. In particular, we show that such averages are controlled by the Gowers–Host–Kra seminorms whenever the system satisfies some mild ergodicity assumptions. Combining this result with the general criteria for joint ergodicity established in our earlier work, we determine a necessary and sufficient condition under which such averages are jointly ergodic, in the sense that they converge in the mean to the product of integrals, or weakly jointly ergodic, in that they converge to the product of conditional expectations. As a corollary, we deduce a special case of a conjecture by Donoso, Koutsogiannis, and Sun in a stronger form.

We present a Markov chain example where non-reversibility and an added edge jointly improve mixing time. When a random edge is added to a cycle of n vertices and a Markov chain with a drift is introduced, we get a mixing time of $O(n^{3/2})$ with probability bounded away from 0. If only one of the two modifications were performed, the mixing time would stay $\Omega(n^2)$ .

We give an example of an FIID vertex-labeling of ${\mathbb T}_3$ whose marginals are uniform on $[0,1]$, and if we delete the edges between those vertices whose labels are different, then some of the remaining clusters are infinite. We also show that no such process can be finitary.
