We prove that any positive rational number is the sum of distinct unit fractions with denominators in $\{p-1 : p\textrm { prime}\}$. The same conclusion holds for the set $\{p-h : p\textrm { prime}\}$ for any $h\in \mathbb {Z}\backslash \{0\}$, provided a necessary congruence condition is satisfied. We also prove that this is true for any subset of the primes of relative positive density, provided a necessary congruence condition is satisfied.

We study the asymptotic behavior of the sequence $ \{\Omega (n) \}_{ n \in \mathbb {N} } $ from a dynamical point of view, where $ \Omega (n) $ denotes the number of prime factors of $ n $ counted with multiplicity. First, we show that for any non-atomic ergodic system $(X, \mathcal {B}, \mu , T)$, the operators $T^{\Omega (n)}: \mathcal {B} \to L^1(\mu )$ have the strong sweeping-out property. In particular, this implies that the pointwise ergodic theorem does not hold along $\Omega (n)$. Second, we show that the behaviors of $\Omega (n)$ captured by the prime number theorem and Erdős–Kac theorem are disjoint, in the sense that their dynamical correlations tend to zero.

We prove the logarithmic Sarnak conjecture for sequences of subquadratic word growth. In particular, we show that the Liouville function has at least quadratically many sign patterns. We deduce the main theorem from a variant which bounds the correlations between multiplicative functions and sequences with subquadratically many words which occur with positive logarithmic density. This allows us to actually prove that our multiplicative functions do not locally correlate with sequences of subquadratic word growth. We also prove a conditional result which shows that if the ( $\kappa -1$ )-Fourier uniformity conjecture holds then the Liouville function does not correlate with sequences with $O(n^{t-\varepsilon })$ many words of length n where $t = \kappa (\kappa +1)/2$ . We prove a variant of the $1$ -Fourier uniformity conjecture where the frequencies are restricted to any set of box dimension less than $1$ .

Let $(H_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}u)(n)=u(n+1)+u(n-1)+2\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}\cos 2\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}+n\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC})u(n)$ be the almost Mathieu operator on $\ell ^{2}(\mathbb{Z})$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}\in \mathbb{R}$. Avila and Jitomirskaya [The ten Martini problem. Ann. of Math. (2), 170(1) (2009), 303–342] conjectured that, for $2\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}\in \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\mathbb{Z}+\mathbb{Z}$, $H_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}$ satisfies Anderson localization if $|\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}|>e^{2\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC})}$. In this paper, we develop a method to treat simultaneous frequency and phase resonances and obtain that, for $2\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}\in \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\mathbb{Z}+\mathbb{Z}$, $H_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC},\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}$ satisfies Anderson localization if $|\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}|>e^{3\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FD}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC})}$.

The results of Bergelson, Host and Kra, and Leibman state that a multiple polynomial correlation sequence can be decomposed into a sum of a nilsequence (a sequence defined by evaluating a continuous function along an orbit in a nilsystem) and a null sequence (a sequence that goes to zero in density). We refine their results by proving that the null sequence goes to zero in density along polynomials evaluated at primes and along the Hardy sequence $(\lfloor n^{c}\rfloor )$. In contrast, given a rigid sequence, we construct an example of a correlation whose null sequence does not go to zero in density along that rigid sequence. As a corollary of a lemma in the proof, the formula for the pointwise ergodic average along polynomials of primes in a nilsystem is also obtained.

We consider divergent orbits of the group of diagonal matrices in the space of lattices in Euclidean space. We define two natural numerical invariants of such orbits: the discriminant—an integer—and the type—an integer vector. We then study the question of the limit distributional behavior of these orbits as the discriminant goes to infinity. Using entropy methods we prove that, for divergent orbits of a specific type, virtually any sequence of orbits equidistributes as the discriminant goes to infinity. Using measure rigidity for higher-rank diagonal actions, we complement this result and show that, in dimension three or higher, only very few of these divergent orbits can spend all of their life-span in a given compact set before they diverge.

We give a lower bound of the Mahler measure on a set of polynomials that are ‘almost’ reciprocal. Here ‘almost’ reciprocal means that the outermost coefficients of each polynomial mirror each other in proportion, while this pattern may break down for the innermost coefficients.

Estimating averages of Dirichlet convolutions $1\ast \unicode[STIX]{x1D712}$, for some real Dirichlet character $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}$ of fixed modulus, over the sparse set of values of binary forms defined over $\mathbb{Z}$ has been the focus of extensive investigations in recent years, with spectacular applications to Manin’s conjecture for Châtelet surfaces. We introduce a far-reaching generalisation of this problem, in particular replacing $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}$ by Jacobi symbols with both arguments having varying size, possibly tending to infinity. The main results of this paper provide asymptotic estimates and lower bounds of the expected order of magnitude for the corresponding averages. All of this is performed over arbitrary number fields by adapting a technique of Daniel specific to $1\ast 1$. This is the first time that divisor sums over values of binary forms are asymptotically evaluated over any number field other than $\mathbb{Q}$. Our work is a key step in the proof, given in subsequent work, of the lower bound predicted by Manin’s conjecture for all del Pezzo surfaces over all number fields, under mild assumptions on the Picard number.

Let $R$ be a large field of characteristic $p$. We classify the supersingular simple modules of the pro-$p$-Iwahori Hecke $R$-algebra ${\mathcal{H}}$ of a general reductive $p$-adic group $G$. We show that the functor of pro-$p$-Iwahori invariants behaves well when restricted to the representations compactly induced from an irreducible smooth $R$-representation $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}$ of a special parahoric subgroup $K$ of $G$. We give an almost-isomorphism between the center of ${\mathcal{H}}$ and the center of the spherical Hecke algebra ${\mathcal{H}}(G,K,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C})$, and a Satake-type isomorphism for ${\mathcal{H}}(G,K,\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C})$. This generalizes results obtained by Ollivier for $G$ split and $K$ hyperspecial to $G$ general and $K$ special.

We define a topological space over the p-adic numbers, in which Euler products and Dirichlet series converge. We then show how the classical Riemann zeta function has a (p-adic) Euler product structure at the negative integers. Finally, as a corollary of these results, we derive a new formula for the non-Archimedean Euler–Mascheroni constant.

A terrace for $\mathbb{Z}_m$ is a particular type of sequence formed from the $m$ elements of $\mathbb{Z}_m$. For $m$ odd, many procedures are available for constructing power-sequence terraces for $\mathbb{Z}_m$; each terrace of this sort may be partitioned into segments, of which one contains merely the zero element of $\mathbb{Z}_m$, whereas every other segment is either a sequence of successive powers of an element of $\mathbb{Z}_m$ or such a sequence multiplied throughout by a constant. We now refine this idea to show that, for $m=n-1$, where $n$ is an odd prime power, there are many ways in which power-sequences in $\mathbb{Z}_n$ can be used to arrange the elements of $\mathbb{Z}_n\setminus\{0\}$ in a sequence of distinct entries $i$, $1\le i\le m$, usually in two or more segments, which becomes a terrace for $\mathbb{Z}_m$ when interpreted modulo $m$ instead of modulo $n$. Our constructions provide terraces for $\mathbb{Z}_{n-1}$ for all prime powers $n$ satisfying $0\ltn\lt300$ except for $n=125$, $127$ and $257$.

In this article we will show that there are infinitely many symmetric, integral 3 × 3 matrices, with zeros on the diagonal, whose eigenvalues are all integral. We will do this by proving that the rational points on a certain non-Kummer, singular $\text{K3}$ surface are dense. We will also compute the entire Néron–Severi group of this surface and find all low degree curves on it.
