Cet article vise à élucider la nature de l'enquête. Je présente tout d'abord les desiderata communs à toute théorie de l'enquête. Je catégorise ensuite l'enquête comme un processus structuré en me concentrant sur ses composantes essentielles : des attitudes de questionnement guidant des actions. Enfin, je me penche sur l'objection récente selon laquelle les attitudes de questionnement ne sont pas nécessaires à l'enquête. Je défends la thèse selon laquelle l'enquête est un processus structuré essentiellement constitué d'attitudes de questionnement ayant deux rôles fonctionnels précis, soit d'initier et de guider le déploiement de capacités cognitives en vue d'un but épistémique.

In the spring of 1893, the Austrian writer and critic Hermann Bahr began interviewing various people on antisemitism, a subject of heated discussion in the European feuilleton around 1900. “Once again, I am travelling the world sounding out people’s opinions and listening to what they have to say,” he wrote in his introduction to a series of articles on that issue that appeared in the feuilleton of the Deutsche Zeitung between March and September 1893. A year later, the Berlin publishing house S. Fischer turned Bahr’s articles into a book. Bahr conducted a total of thirty-eight interviews with prominent personages, such as August Bebel, Theodor Mommsen, Ernst Haeckel, Henrik Ibsen and Jules Simon. Bahr did not focus on the arguments in favour or against antisemitism. Instead, he set out explicitly to investigate the sentiments, perceptions and opinions on this topic within the cultured classes. Yet, as I will show in this article, Bahr tried to capture not only the “sentiments” [Empfindungen] aired by his interviewees, but also the settings and interiors in which the interviews took place. I argue that these descriptions of physical space served Bahr as authentication, as a three-dimensional certificate for the “facts of opinion” [Meinungstatsachen] he recorded.

The narrative-based approach acts as the only tool capable of creating and assigning a meaning to individual life stories, linking individuals to their actions. The use of narrative as a reference frame for understanding the motive of the crime therefore offers an innovative perspective into criminology and its forensic application. Through the stories of the criminals and the victims, of society, and the world of justice as a whole, doing narrative criminology means listening to and accurately analysing criminal life stories to shed some light and meaning on the obscure elements of reality that from time to time take shape as a violent act. After a review of the most recent literature in the criminological narrative area, the present work analyses the role of the criminologist as an expert who provides an essential contribution during investigation and trial phases. Moreover, the work proposes the use of a narrative approach and the contribution of a narrative criminologist in two different moments of the criminal procedure: during the investigation phase, through a preventive methodological narrative training of forensic experts, with emphasis on team work, and in the trial phase through the use of criminological interviews to assess criminal liability and dangerousness.

For the past four years, two instructors and approximately one hundred students have participated in a novel experiment in liberal arts legal education. Legal Inquiry, an upper-year course in the Arts & Science Program at McMaster University, seeks to “demystify legal knowledge for the curious student of the world.” It brings together two kindred yet previously isolated academic traditions: an open-ended inquiry approach to knowledge and a critical pluralist understanding of law.

To explore the compatibility of “law” and “inquiry,” the instructors wanted students to gain confidence and skills in engaging with formal legal sources, apply critical thinking to law, and appreciate informal and everyday law. These objectives were met with surprising success given the brevity of the course. Students achieved a basic understanding of formal law and legal reasoning, generated a vocabulary of what it means to think critically about law, and began to identify the continuity of formal and informal law.

Introduction. Les populations de Kidal, au nord du Mali, traditionnellementnomades, s'orientent progressivement vers l'agriculture du fait de sécheressesrécurrentes ; la culture du palmier dattier bien que représentée est encore peu élaboréedans cette région. Notre étude s'est inscrite dans le cadre des projets de développementde la phoeniciculture au nord du Mali. Elle a eu pour objectif de recenser et decaractériser les ressources phytogénétiques du palmier dattier afin d’envisager desstratégies de développement de ce patrimoine. Matériel et méthodes. Notreétude a été réalisée, dans la région de Kidal, dans neuf sites principaux connus depuislongtemps pour la culture du palmier dattier. Nous avons déterminé le nombre total depieds observés dans la région, l’effectif des pieds productifs, la répartition des sexes,les cultivars représentés, l'âge des pieds et leurs périodes de maturation. Unecaractérisation des principaux cultivars a été établie en se basant sur des caractèresvégétatifs et des caractères morphologiques des inflorescences, des fruits et des graines.Résultats et discussion. Nous avons recensé plus de 4000 palmiers dattiersdans la région échantillonnée ; les proportions de palmiers mâles se sont révéléesélevées. Le site de Tessalit semble héberger la palmeraie la plus importante et la plusancienne. Il présente 39 % de l'effectif total des palmiers dattiers recensés. Notre étudea permis d’identifier 18 cultivars. Les analyses factorielles des correspondancesmultiples sur la caractérisation des cultivars de la région de Kidal ont montré que lavariabilité inter-cultivars semble être très importante quels que soient les caractèresétudiés ; en revanche, la variabilité intra-cultivar est faible. Des proximités ont étédéfinies entre les cultivars de Tigazas locaux et la Tigaza algérienne.

The objective of this research is to determine the prevalence and risk factors for primary hypothyroidism in a sample of Canadian seniors. The Canadian Study of Health and Aging (CSHA) was a prevalence survey of seniors living at home and in long-term care facilities (n = 10,263). Detailed clinical examinations were conducted on 2,914 seniors, of which 1,415 had serum TSH levels measured.The ten Canadian Provinces were grouped into five geographic regions (Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairies and British Columbia). Only seniors who underwent detailed clinical examinations (n = 2,914) are included. Hypothyroidism was defined as seniors taking thyroid hormone replacement or seniors having a serum TSH level greater than 10 mU/L. An estimated 9.6 per cent of seniors had hypothyroidism, 5.1 per cent were inadequately treated and 2.1 per cent were untreated. Age, gender, cultural background, geographic region and place of residence were potential risk factors for hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism was found to be a prevalent problem in this population.

Numerous threats to animal genetic resources for food and agriculture (AnGR) have been described in the literature. Yet knowledge regarding the threats facing particular breeds and production systems is patchy and often unavailable to relevant stakeholders. Lack of knowledge about threats often goes hand in hand with a more general lack of knowledge about the characteristics, use, management and distribution of livestock breeds. The study of threats should be an integral part of national surveying and monitoring strategies for AnGR. Field surveys are an opportunity to draw upon the knowledge of livestock keepers and other local stakeholders and to map breed distributions. Insights from the field should be integrated, together with information on economic trends, policy developments and the distribution of risks associated with epidemics and other disasters, into a broader understanding of threats. If a large-scale survey of stakeholder opinion is envisaged, it is important to be clear about the objectives of the exercise when designing any classification framework to be used for data collection and analysis. Analysis of threats should aim not only to record the presence or absence of particular threats but also to provide a better understanding of their spatial and temporal dynamics and how they are affected by context (location, production environment, human attitudes and objectives, etc.).

Introduction. The data on Bactrocera cucurbitae collected over a large area of West Africa for around the past ten years enables us to make a synthesis, since this economically significant species is now widespread. Fruit samples were collected in the course of various trips to Africa; we focused on looking for the melon fly, B. cucurbitae (Coquillett). Equipment and methods. The Tephritidae were captured by means of trapping the adults and collecting holed fruit containing larvae. The fruit samples were taken from Cucurbitaceae found in the sub-region, and from other plant families hosting melon fly larvae. Fruit holed by flies were collected from untreated orchards and taken to the laboratory to be weighed, counted and classified by species, variety, date and location. The larvae collected metamorphosed into pupae. After hatching from the pupae, the adults were recovered. Results and discussion. The samples taken enabled us to determine the distribution of B. cucurbitae in West Africa; this species was found in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Senegal. The fruit collected in these countries enabled us to draw up a list of B. cucurbitae host plants in these regions; besides Cucurbitaceae, there were two Anacardiaceae species, two Rutaceae species, one Annonaceae species, one Solanaceae species and one Oxalidaceae species. There were four economically important fruit species among them. Unlike Reunion, where the dietary pattern of the melon fly is oligophagous, in West Africa it appears to be polyphagous instead. Conclusion. The data collected from B. cucurbitae host plants is subsequently to be validated, and then refined by quantitative analyses for the different West African countries.

Introduction. Fruit flies (Diptera, Tephritidae) are among the major constraints in commercial horticulture in many African developing countries. Knowledge of the tephritid spectrum in any given area is a prerequisite for the development of an IPM program to alleviate the pest problem. We studied the fruit fly diversity in four main agro-ecological zones which are significant fruit-producing areas in the Morogoro Region, Tanzania. Materials and methods. Fruit fly diversity was investigated for one year (October 2004 – October 2005). Parapheromones, synthetic food attractant and protein-bait traps were used to trap the flies at the different locations in Morogoro region, Tanzania. One mixed orchard was selected at each of four locations representing the different agro-ecological zones of the region. Results. The recently introduced alien species, Bactrocera invadens, and three indigenous pest species, Ceratitis rosa, Dacus bivittatus and D. punctatifrons, were found at all the four sites, while Bactrocera cucurbitae, Ceratitis cosyra, Dacus chiwira and D. humeralis were found in three out of the four sites. The Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) Horticulture Unit and Mikese sites had the highest species diversity while the Mkindo and Nyandira sites had the lowest diversity. The between-habitats diversity (Beta diversity) was similar among the SUA, Mkindo and Mikese sites. Only the Nyandira site had a higher dissimilarity in comparison with the other three sites. Discussion. The most abundant species at low- and mid-elevation sites was Bactrocera invadens while, at high elevation, Ceratitis rosa was the dominant species. Protein-baited traps attracted the highest diversity of fruit flies in comparison with the more specific parapheromones. The synthetic food attractant (three-component lure) was less efficient compared with the protein bait. The large dissimilarity at the Nyandira site is probably due to the different types of host fruits found and grown in high altitude areas (mainly temperate fruits). Fruit fly species associated with these types of fruits, e.g., Ceratitis rubivora and Trirhithrum coffeae, were found only at this site.

Contexte et présentation du projet. Après un bref historique et un aperçu général de l’arboriculture fruitière en Polynésie française, le fonctionnement et les opérations programmées sur 3 ans d’un projet d’appui mené de 2002 à 2005 sont présentés. Réalisation. Les cinq thèmes principaux d’intervention sont successivement décrits : amélioration du matériel végétal ; recherches d’accompagnement ; formation, vulgarisation et encadrement : volet complété par la rédaction de documents techniques ; missions d’appui et stages ; démarche qualité et organisation de la profession, complété par un volet de valorisation des produits par transformation. Les résultats et les moyens utilisés sont analysés. Discussion et conclusion. Les avantages et inconvénients rencontrés dans la réalisation du projet sont discutés et permettent de proposer quelques améliorations dans la mise en œuvre de projets analogues.

Introduction.Detarium microcarpum Guill. et Perr., espèce forestière fruitière de la zone soudano-sahélienne, est actuellement menacée de disparition au sud du Mali suite à des actions anthropiques. L'objectif global des travaux présentés a été d'inventorier les connaissances des populations locales sur la plante afin d'acquérir des informations relatives à la caractérisation, la gestion, la protection et l'utilisation durable des ressources génétiques de D. microcarpum dans cette zone. Matériel et méthodes. Une enquête a été menée, par interviews, sur la base de questionnaires ouverts dans 23 villages (216 personnes) appartenant aux zones agro-écologiques du plateau de Koutiala au sud du Mali. Résultats et discussion. L'enquête a confirmé que l'espèce joue un rôle important sur les plans socioculturel, médicinal, écologique et environnemental au sud du Mali. Les critères d'appréciation paysans des écotypes de D. microcarpum portent surtout sur la couleur de l'écorce, la taille des feuilles et la qualité des fruits. Selon les personnes interrogées, la perpétuation de D. microcarpum passe par la réglementation de la coupe de bois et le contrôle des feux. Conclusion. Les connaissances locales permettront d'élaborer une stratégie de conservation durable de D. microcarpum. Auparavant, certains aspects devront être élucidés.

A survey involving more than 129 farmers was carried out in 1998 and 1999 in Ouémé, Benin, to investigate the importance of pests and diseases as constraints to cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) production. Results indicated that in the Ouémé valley Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. and Aphis craccivora Koch are specific concerns. Weeds such as justicia anselliana (Nees) T. Anders, Ipomoea aquatica Forsskal and Commelina erecta L. were also reported as being troublesome. On the Ouémé plateau Imperata cylindrica L. Beauv. was reported to be a major weed. Callosobruchus maculatus Fab. and Bruchidius atrolineatus Fab. may cause up to 100% loss within a few months in storage. Birds and rodents were also reported. In certain areas on the plateau, farmers have developed pest control methods based on indigenous knowledge. In the valley the population density of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart) Solms. during flooding is used by farmers to predict aphid infestation. A number of plant species used to protect cowpea were reported. In Gbékandji village, natural enemies such as Rhabdepyris sp., Evania sp., and Chelonus sp., were observed. They were rare in the valley, where farmers rely on chemical control. Farmers reported alternative hosts of cowpea pests from the families Fabaceae (eight species), Mimosaceae (two species), Ceasalpiniaceae (five species), Capparidaceae (two species) and Pontederiaceae (one species). Based on the hierarchy of constraints, sustainable integrated pest management technologies are being developed with farmers using a participatory approach.
