The optimum distance and duration of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation for the complete inactivation of African catfish Clarias gariepinus egg nucleus was investigated in this study. The UV light was suspended above the unfertilized eggs at four distances (5, 10, 20 and 30 cm) and for five durations (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 min). Then, the irradiated eggs were activated with sperm from diploid C. gariepinus and cold shocked at 5°C for 5 min just moments before cell cleavage. Ploidy analysis was performed using karyotype chromosome counting. The results obtained suggested that the further the distance, the better the hatchability rate, however prolonged duration seemed to significantly reduced hatchability. All treatments with surviving progenies at the end of the study showed evidence of successfully diploid gynogen (2n = 56) induction at different percentages. However, the optimal protocol that gave a moderately high hatchability/survival rate and completely induced gynogens was exposure of the eggs to UV irradiation at 20 cm for 1 min. It was concluded that the distance and duration of UV irradiation affects gynogenetic induction in African catfish C. gariepinus.

Environmental factors such as sunshine hours, temperature and UV radiation (UVR) are known to influence seasonal fluctuations in vitamin D concentrations. However, currently there is poor understanding regarding the environmental factors or individual characteristics that best predict neonatal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations. The aims of this study were to (1) identify environmental and individual determinants of 25(OH)D concentrations in newborns and (2) investigate whether environmental factors and individual characteristics could be used as proxy measures for neonatal 25(OH)D concentrations. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) was measured from neonatal dried blood spots (DBS) of 1182 individuals born between 1993 and 2002. Monthly aggregated data on daily number of sunshine hours, temperature and UVR, available from 1993, were retrieved from the Danish Meteorological Institute. The individual predictors were obtained from the Danish National Birth register, and Statistics Denmark. The optimal model to predict 25(OH)D3 concentrations from neonatal DBS was the one including the following variables: UVR, temperature, maternal education, maternal smoking during pregnancy, gestational age at birth and parity. This model explained 30 % of the variation of 25(OH)D3 in the neonatal DBS. Ambient UVR in the month before the birth month was the best single-item predictor of neonatal 25(OH)D3, accounting for 24 % of its variance. Although this prediction model cannot substitute for actual blood measurements, it might prove useful in cohort studies ranking individuals in groups according to 25(OH)D3 status.

Spacecraft have visited Jupiter and Saturn at all phases of the solar cycle and thus we have a wealth of data with which to explore both upstream parameters and magnetospheric response. In this paper we review upstream parameters including interplanetary magnetic field strength and direction, solar wind dynamic pressure, plasma beta and Mach number. We consider the impact of changing solar wind on dayside coupling via reconnection. We also comment on how solar UV flux variability over a solar cycle influences the plasma and neutral tori in the inner magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn, and thus estimate the solar cycle effects on internally driven magnetospheric dynamics. Finally we place our results in the context of the now complete set of data from the Cassini mission at Saturn and the current data streaming in from Juno at Jupiter, outlining future avenues for research.

Under greenhouse conditions, annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.), common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris L.), shepherd's purse [Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medicus], small nettle (Urtica urens L.), canola (Brassica napus L. ssp. napus), and pea (Pisum sativa L.) differed in sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Of the weed species, annual bluegrass was the least sensitive; whereas, among the crop species, canola was about sevenfold more sensitive than was pea. The sensitivity of a species to UV radiation was highly dependent upon its stage of development. The study indicates some potential for using UV radiation to control weeds, but the method needs further investigation to unravel the selectivity of the methods and potential health hazards.

After neary 20 years since their discovery by Kosovichev and Zharkova, the mechanics of the release of seismic transients into the solar interior from some flares remain a mystery. Seismically emissive flares invariably show the signatures of intense chromosphere heating consistent with pressure variations sufficient to drive seismic transients commensurate with helioseismic observations—under certain conditions. Magnetic observations show the signatures of apparent magnetic changes, suggesting Lorentz-force transients that could likewise drive seismic transients—similarly subject to certain conditions. But, the diagnostic signatures of both of these prospective drivers are apparent over vast regions from which no significant seismic emission emanates. What distinguishes the source regions of transient seismic emission from the much vaster regions that show the signatures of both transient heating and magnetic variations but are acoustically unproductive? Observations of acoustically active flares in He II 304 Å by the Atomospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) offer a promising new resource with which to address this question.

This work presents an analysis of UV spectroscopic observations from the IRIS satellite of an M1.0 class flare occurred on 12 June 2014 in active region NOAA 12087. Our analysis of the IRIS spectra and Slit-Jaw images revealed presence of a strongly redshifted chromospheric jet before the flare. We also found strong emission of the chromospheric lines, and studied the C II 1334.5 Å line emission distribution in details. A blueshift of the Fe XXI line across the flaring region corresponds to evaporation flows of the hot chromospheric plasma with a speed of 50 km/s. Although the enhancement of the C II line integrated redshift correlates with the flare X-ray emission, we classify the evaporation as of a “gentle” type because of its long time scale and subsonic velocities. Analysis of X-ray data from the RHESSI satellite showed that both, an injection of accelerated particles and a heat flux from the energy release site can explain the energetics of the observed event.

Probiotics are live micro-organisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. Cell surface molecules of these micro-organisms are being studied in relation to their ability to interact with the host. The cell wall of lactobacilli possesses lipoteichoic acids (LTA) which are molecules with immunomodulatory properties. UV radiation (UVR) has been proposed as the main cause of skin cancer because of its mutagenic and immunosuppressive effects. Photoprotection with some nutrition interventions including probiotics has recently been shown. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the oral administration of purified LTA from Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG can modulate the immune-suppressive effect of UVR and skin tumour development in female Crl:SKH-1-hrBR mice. For this purpose, two irradiation models were studied: (1) a chronic irradiation scheme consisting of daily irradiations during twenty consecutive days and (2) a long-term irradiation schedule, irradiating the animals three times per week, during 34 weeks for tumour development. The results showed that T-cells in the inguinal lymph node of LTA-treated mice produced higher levels of (1) interferon-γ and (2) a number of total, helper and cytotoxic T-cells compared with non-treated mice. Moreover, a significant delay in tumour appearance was found in LTA-treated mice. An increased IgA+ cell number was found in the small intestine together with a higher number of activated dendritic cells in the mesenteric lymph nodes. The latter results might be indicative of a direct effect of LTA in the gut, affecting the cutaneous immune system and restoring homeostasis through the gut–skin axis.

Vitamin D is unique among the vitamins in that man can synthesise it via the action of UV radiation upon the skin. This combined with its ability to act on specific target tissues via vitamin D receptors (VDR) make its classification as a steroid hormone more appropriate. While vitamin D deficiency is a recognised problem in some northern latitude countries, recent studies have shown that even in sunny countries, such as Australia, vitamin D deficiency may be more prevalent than first thought. Vitamin D is most well known for its role in bone health; however, the discovery of VDR on a wide variety of tissue types has also opened up roles for vitamin D far beyond traditional bone health. These include possible associations with autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel diseases, cancer, CVD and muscle strength. First, this paper presents an overview of the two sources of vitamin D: exposure to UVB radiation and food sources of vitamin D, with particular focus on both Australian and international studies on dietary vitamin D intake and national fortification strategies. Second, the paper reviews recent epidemiological and experimental evidence linking vitamin D and its role in health and disease for the major conditions linked to suboptimal vitamin D, while identifying significant gaps in the research and possible future directions for research.

The symposium has shown the dynamism of this rapidly evolving discipline. I shall concentrate here on some highlights and some complementary informations. I conclude on open questions with some perspectives on solar & stellar activity and related planets.

Using SOHO/EIT Fe XII λ195 Å observations the new type of oscillations in coronal loops was detected. The oscillation corresponds to wave propagated to outer area of atmosphere of active area. As opposed to most kind of oscillations associated with coronal loops the waves are observed at non-flare stage of active areas evolution. Velocities of the wave propagation were 8-20 km s−1 and had quasi-perpendicular direction with magnetic field. Such waves were detected in active areas located on solar disk and loops structures outside solar limb. Investigation of EIT data shows the waves are not result of changes of topology of a magnetic field and loops configuration. The nature and probable sources of waves are discussed.

For the first time the kinetic rate constants of the UV photolysis of polyynes C6H2, C8H2, C10H2, C12H2 and C14H2 under rigorously inert atmosphere have been determined in three different solvents: n-hexane, n-heptane and decalin. First- or pseudofirst-order kinetics appear suitable to describe the photolysis of these molecules and k values in the range between 3.0×10−3 s−1 and 4.6×10−3 s−1 have been determined. The unique exception is represented by C6H2 which photolyses more slowly with k=3.2×10−4 s−1. Two different UV sources have been used in the present study: a low-pressure mercury lamp having a monochromatic emission at 253.7 nm and a medium-to high-pressure lamp with a continuous emission between 222 nm and 580 nm. The results are of interest in the understanding, and also the modelling, of the fate of polyynes released by carbon-rich stars in the interstellar medium or the polyynes released by comets in their active phase.

The chromosphere in internetwork regions of the quiet Sun was regarded as a static and homogeneous layer for a long time. Thanks to advances in observations and numerical modelling, the wave nature of these atmospheric regions received increasing attention during the last decade. Recent three-dimensional radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations with CO5BOLD feature the chromosphere of internetwork regions as a dynamic and intermittent phenomenon. It is a direct product of interacting waves that form a mesh-like pattern of hot shock fronts and cool post-shock regions. The waves are excited self-consistently at the top of the convection zone. In the middle chromosphere above an average height of 1000 km, plasma beta gets larger than one and magnetic fields become more important. The model chromosphere exhibits a magnetic field that is much more homogeneous than in the layers below and evolves much faster. That includes fast propagating (MHD) waves. Further improvements of the simulations like time-dependent hydrogen ionisation are currently in progress. This class of models is capable of explaining apparently contradicting diagnostics such as carbon monoxide and UV emission at the same time.

We present a brief description of new complex of space telescopes and spectrographs, TESIS, which will be placed aboard the CORONAS-PHOTON satellite. The complex is intended for high-resolution imaging observation of full Sun in the coronal spectral lines and in the spectral lines of the solar transition region. TESIS will be launched at the end of 2007 – early of 2008. About 25 % of the daily TESIS images will be free for use and for downloading from the TESIS data center that is planned to open 2 months before the TESIS launching at http://www.tesis.lebedev.ru

In this work we focus on UVCS data acquired during the November 2002 SOHO–Ulysses quadrature, at an altitude of 1.7 R$_{\odot}$ over a range of latitudes centered around 27$^{\circ}$N in the western quadrant. A couple of hours before our observations started, a CME event (November 26, 15:30 UT) originating at about 27$^\circ$N, disrupted the coronal configuration of the region. In the $\sim$ 2.3 days following the event UVCS detected emission in the neutral H $Ly \beta$ and $Ly \gamma$ lines as well as in lines from both high and low ionization ions such as C iii, O vi, Si viii, ix and xii, Fe x and xviii. Enhanced emission from the hot Fe xviii ion ($\log T_{max} = 6.7$), lasting nearly to the end of our observations and originating in a region between 10$^\circ$N and 30$^\circ$N, has been identified with a post–CME current sheet. Our interpretation is supported by EIT Fe xii images which show a system of loops at increasingly higher altitudes after the event. Northward of the CME, UVCS observed repeated, sudden and short lived emission peaks in the “cool” $Ly \beta$, $Ly \gamma$, C iii and O vi lines. These events seem to be the extension at higher altitudes of the chromospheric plasma jets observed in the EIT He ii images. We report on a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) observed on June 27 1999 by the UltraViolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) telescope operating on board the SOHO spacecraft. The CME was also observed by LASCO (SOHO). Emission of hot material has been recorded by UVCS propagating in front of an opening system of loops generated by the CME. The evolution of the UVCS structure is highly correlated to the evolution of the opening loop. The data reveal excess broadening of the O VI doublet lines and an enhancement in the intensity of the Si XII$\lambda 520.66$ and $\lambda499.37$ lines due to the motion of the expanding hot gas. We summarize results of our recent studies of CME-associated EUV dimmings and coronal waves by ‘derotated’ fixed-difference SOHO/EIT heliograms at 195 Å with 12-min intervals and at 171, 195, 284, 304 Å with 6-h intervals. Correctness of the derotated fixed-difference technique is confirmed by the consideration of the Bastille Day 2000 event. We also demonstrate that long narrow channeled dimmings and anisotropic coronal waves are typical of the complex global solar magnetosphere near the solar cycle maximum. Homology of large-scale dimmings and coronal waves takes place in a series of recurrent eruptive events. Along with dimmings coinciding entirely or partially in all four EIT bands, there exist dimmings that appear different, mainly in the transition-region line of 304 Å and high-temperature coronal line of 284 Å.To search for other articles by the author(s) go to: http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html

Using multi-spectral data, we estimate plasma parameters in the post-eruptive arcade observed on October 22, 2001 at 100 Mm above the limb: the temperature is 6 MK and the plasma density is $(5-9) \cdot 10^9$ cm$^{-3}$. We state a problem of the long-term equilibrium of the hot top of the arcade high in the corona: either the magnetic field surrounding the arcade well exceeds that one extrapolated in the potential approximation, or $\beta > 1$ both inside and outside the arcade. The Rauer Islands contain more than fifty shallow lakes and small ephemeral ponds. Despite their proximity to the Vestfold Hills - one of the most diverse and intensively studied lake districts of eastern Antarctica - the lakes of the Rauer Islands have remained undescribed. In this study the physical and chemical limnology and biology of ten lakes is presented and their species-environment relationships explored using multivariate statistics. Analyses of chemical and biological data indicate that the Rauer Islands form a distinct limnological province amongst the lakes of the Prydz Bay oases. Salinities range from hypo- to hyper-saline with an ionic order close to that of seawater. Deviance from this order indicates either an earlier origin for some of the most hypersaline lakes when compared with the Vestfold Hills, more rapid evaporation vs precipitation or differences in the sources of ions resulting from isostatic history. With fluctuating salinities, winter water temperatures below –10°C, seasonal ice and slush formation, desiccation and high levels of solar radiation, the lacustrine environment presents considerable abiotic challenges for biological survival. Results indicate that there is little or no planktonic flora in the lakes and no zooplankton were encountered. Despite this, analyses of pigments, diatoms and other micro-algae revealed an active and diverse benthic biota characterized by filamentous cyanobacteria with interstitial algae. Thirty-eight diatom taxa, and a selection of Chlorophyta and Xanthophyta were detected amongst the cyanobacteria. Clusters in the diatom data correspond to salinity. Further analyses of the relationships between the biota and their environment revealed some of the strategies employed for survival. In particular, the synthesis of scytonemin was detected. This pigment is known to function as an extracellular UV sunscreen which protects cyanobacterial cells against damage by ultraviolet radiation. These results support the hypothesis that environmental extremes and biogeographical isolation control the biology of these lakes.

Sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UV-A, λ = 315-400 nm; plus UV-B, λ = 280-315 nm) of zygotes of the brown alga Fucus serratus L. (Phaeophyta) has been assessed through effects on growth of developing germlings. Different stages of development were distinguished by considering 5 h periods of time after fertilisation. Both the stage of the zygote and the UV radiation condition significantly affected growth of developing germlings. The negative response of growth rate of early stages of the zygotes to UV radiation seemed to be caused by UV-B rather than UV-A radiation, as the lowest relative growth rates were always estimated for germlings developed from zygotes irradiated with UV-B radiation. As regards the stage of the zygote, those germlings that developed from zygotes irradiated at 5-10 h after fertilisation showed the strongest inhibition of growth compared with the other stages. These results point to polarisation as the most UV-sensitive process during the first 24 h of the development of the zygote. A non-linear relationship between the developmental stage of the zygote and the sensitivity to UV radiation is suggested.
