We introduce the notions of returns and well-aligned sets for closed relations on compact metric spaces and then use them to obtain non-trivial sufficient conditions for such a relation to have non-zero entropy. In addition, we give a characterization of finite relations with non-zero entropy in terms of Li–Yorke and DC2 chaos.

An old question of Arhangel’skii asks if the Menger property of a Tychonoff space X is preserved by homeomorphisms of the space $C_p(X)$ of continuous real-valued functions on X endowed with the pointwise topology. We provide affirmative answer in the case of linear homeomorphisms. To this end, we develop a method of studying invariants of linear homeomorphisms of function spaces $C_p(X)$ by looking at the way X is positioned in its (Čech–Stone) compactification.

We investigate the entropy for a class of upper semi-continuous set-valued functions, called Markov set-valued functions, that are a generalization of single-valued Markov interval functions. It is known that the entropy of a Markov interval function can be found by calculating the entropy of an associated shift of finite type. In this paper, we construct a similar shift of finite type for Markov set-valued functions and use this shift space to find upper and lower bounds on the entropy of the set-valued function.

In this work we are concerned with the existence of fixed points for multivalued maps defined on Banach spaces. Using the Banach spaces scale concept, we establish the existence of a fixed point of a multivalued map in a vector subspace where the map is only locally Lipschitz continuous. We apply our results to the existence of mild solutions and asymptotically almost periodic solutions of an abstract Cauchy problem governed by a first-order differential inclusion. Our results are obtained by using fixed point theory for the measure of noncompactness.

In this paper we provide a unified approach, based on methods of descriptive set theory, for proving some classical selection theorems. Among them is the zero-dimensional Michael selection theorem, the Kuratowski–Ryll-Nardzewski selection theorem, as well as a known selection theorem for hyperspaces.

The approximation of Banach space valued non-absolutely integrable functions by step functions is studied. It is proved that a Henstock integrable function can be approximated by a sequence of step functions in the Alexiewicz norm, while a Henstock–Kurzweil–Pettis and a Denjoy–Khintchine–Pettis integrable function can be only scalarly approximated in the Alexiewicz norm by a sequence of step functions. In case of Henstock–Kurzweil–Pettis and Denjoy–Khintchine–Pettis integrals the full approximation can be done if and only if the range of the integral is norm relatively compact.

Cubical sets and their homology have been used in dynamical systems as well as in digital imaging. We take a fresh look at this topic, following Zariski ideas from algebraic geometry. The cubical topology is defined to be a topology in ${{\mathbb{R}}^{d}}$ in which a set is closed if and only if it is cubical. This concept is a convenient frame for describing a variety of important features of cubical sets. Separation axioms which, in general, are not satisfied here, characterize exactly those pairs of points which we want to distinguish. The noetherian property guarantees the correctness of the algorithms. Moreover, maps between cubical sets which are continuous and closed with respect to the cubical topology are precisely those for whom the homology map can be defined and computed without grid subdivisions. A combinatorial version of the Vietoris–Begle theorem is derived. This theorem plays the central role in an algorithm computing homology of maps which are continuous with respect to the Euclidean topology.

Differentiability properties of optimal value functions associated with perturbed optimization problems require strong assumptions. We consider such a set of assumptions which does not use compactness hypothesis but which involves a kind of coherence property. Moreover, a strict differentiability property is obtained by using techniques of Ekeland and Lebourg and a result of Preiss. Such a strengthening is required in order to obtain genericity results.

In this paper, the concept of essential equilibria for production economies is first given. We then prove that in ‘most’ production economies (in the sense of Baire category) all equilibria are essential.

We provide vector analogues of the classical interpolation theorems for lower semicontinuous functions due to Dowker and to Hahn and Katetov-Tong.

In [6] and [7], Krasnosel'skiĭ proved several fundamental fixed point principles for operators leaving invariant a cone in a Banach space. In [9], Nussbaum extended one of the results, the theorem about compression and expansion of a cone, to k-setcontraction maps, k < 1. Other versions for completely continuous maps were given by Fournier-Peitgen [2] and G. Fournier [1].

The purpose of this paper is to generalise some of these results to upper semi continuous multivalued maps which are K-set contractions, k < 1, and differentiable at the origin and infinity.

Let (E, T) be a Hausdorff topological vector space whose topological dual separates points of E, X be a non-empty weakly compact convex subset of E and W be the relative weak topology on X. If F: (X, W) → 2(E,T) is continuous (respectively, upper semi-continuous if £ is locally convex), approximation and fixed point theorems are obtained which generalize the corresponding results of Fan, Park, Reich and Sehgal-Singh-Smithson (respectively, Ha, Reich, Park, Browder and Fan) in several aspects.

We prove that the composition of a minimal usco map, defined on a Baire space, with a lower semicontinuous function is single valued and usco at each point of a dense G$ subset of its domain. This extends earlier results of Kenderov and Fitzpatrick. As a first consequence, we prove that a Banach space, with the property that there exists a strictly convex, weak* lower semicontinuous function on its dual, is a weak Asplund space. As a second consequence, we present a short proof of the fact that a Banach space with separable dual is an Asplund space.

In this paper the notion of inverse cluster set, which was recently introduced and studied for functions by T. R. Hamlett and P. E. Long (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc, 53 (1975), 470-476), is extended to and investigated for multifunctions. We generalize the notion of inverse cluster set, extend to multifunctions and generalize some known results for inverse cluster sets of functions and offer some new results. In the latter sections, compactness generalizations are characterized in terms of inverse cluster sets and some results on connected and conectivity functions are extended to multifunctions.
