We study the problem of conjugating a diffeomorphism of the interval to (positive) powers of itself. Although this is always possible for homeomorphisms, the smooth setting is rather interesting. Besides the obvious obstruction given by hyperbolic fixed points, several other aspects need to be considered. As concrete results we show that, in class C1, if we restrict to the (closed) subset of diffeomorphisms having only parabolic fixed points, the set of diffeomorphisms that are conjugate to their powers is dense, but its complement is generic. In higher regularity, however, the complementary set contains an open and dense set. The text is complemented with several remarks and results concerning distortion elements of the group of diffeomorphisms of the interval in several regularities.

Let $(A,\mathfrak{m} )$ be a hypersurface local ring of dimension $d \geq 1$ and let I be an $\mathfrak{m} $-primary ideal. We show that there is a integer rI$\geq\;-1$ (depending only on I) such that if M is any non-free maximal Cohen–Macaulay (= MCM) A-module the function $n \rightarrow \ell(\operatorname{Tor}^A_1(M, A/I^{n+1}))$ (which is of polynomial type) has degree rI. Analogous results hold for Hilbert polynomials associated to Ext-functors. Surprisingly, a key ingredient is the classification of thick subcategories of the stable category of MCM A-modules (obtained by Takahashi, see [11, 6.6]).

A classical result of Reinhold Baer states that a group G = XN, which is the product of two normal supersoluble subgroups X and N, is supersoluble if and only if Gʹ is nilpotent. This result has been weakened in [6] for a finite group G: in fact, we do not need that both X and N are normal, but only that N is normal and X permutes with every maximal subgroup of each Sylow subgroup of N.

In our paper, we improve the result mentioned above by showing that we only need X to permute with the maximal subgroups of the non-cyclic Sylow subgroups of N. Also, we extend this result (and several others) to relevant classes of infinite groups.

The central idea behind our results stems from grasping the key aspects of what happens in [6]. It turns out that tensor products play a very crucial role, and it is precisely this shift of perspective that makes it possible not only to improve those results but also extend them to infinite groups.

We show that for all real biquadratic fields not containing $\sqrt{2}$, $\sqrt{3}$, $\sqrt{5}$, $\sqrt{6}$, $\sqrt{7}$ and $\sqrt{13}$, the Pythagoras number of the ring of algebraic integers is at least 6. We also provide an upper bound on the norm and the minimal (codifferent) trace of additively indecomposable integers in some families of these fields.

In this paper, we establish suitable characterisations for a pair of functions $(W(x),H(x))$ on a bounded, connected domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ in order to have the following Hardy inequality:

where d(x) is a suitable quasi-norm (gauge), $|\xi|^2_A = \langle A(x)\xi, \xi \rangle$ for $\xi \in \mathbb{R}^n$ and A(x) is an n × n symmetric, uniformly positive definite matrix defined on a bounded domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n$. We also give its Lp analogue. As a consequence, we present examples for a standard Laplacian on $\mathbb{R}^n$, Baouendi–Grushin operator, and sub-Laplacians on the Heisenberg group, the Engel group and the Cartan group. Those kind of characterisations for a pair of functions $(W(x),H(x))$ are obtained also for the Rellich inequality. These results answer the open problems of Ghoussoub-Moradifam [16].

In this paper, we prove a new uncertainty principle for functions with radial symmetry by differentiating a radial version of the Stein–Weiss inequality. The difficulty is to prove the differentiability in the limit of the best constant that unlike the general case it is not known. We provide also an integral alternative formula for the logarithmic weight $(\log|\xi|)$ in Fourier domain.

Let q be a power of a prime p, let $\mathbb F_q$ be the finite field with q elements and, for each nonconstant polynomial $F\in \mathbb F_{q}[X]$ and each integer $n\ge 1$, let $s_F(n)$ be the degree of the splitting field (over $\mathbb F_q$) of the iterated polynomial $F^{(n)}(X)$. In 1999, Odoni proved that $s_A(n)$ grows linearly with respect to n if $A\in \mathbb F_q[X]$ is an additive polynomial not of the form $aX^{p^h}$; moreover, if q = p and $B(X)=X^p-X$, he obtained the formula $s_{B}(n)=p^{\lceil \log_p n\rceil}$. In this paper we note that $s_F(n)$ grows at least linearly unless $F\in \mathbb F_q[X]$ has an exceptional form and we obtain a stronger form of Odoni’s result, extending it to affine polynomials. In particular, we prove that if A is additive, then $s_A(n)$ resembles the step function $p^{\lceil \log_p n\rceil}$ and we indeed have the identity $s_A(n)=\alpha p^{\lceil \log_p \beta n\rceil}$ for some $\alpha, \beta\in \mathbb Q$, unless A presents a special irregularity of dynamical flavour. As applications of our main result, we obtain statistics for periodic points of linear maps over $\mathbb F_{q^i}$ as $i\to +\infty$ and for the factorization of iterates of affine polynomials over finite fields.

We prove that any compact R-analytic group is linear when R is a pro-p domain of characteristic zero.

We show that dualising transfer maps in Hochschild cohomology of symmetric algebras over complete discrete valuations rings commutes with Tate duality. This is analogous to a similar result for Tate cohomology of symmetric algebras over fields. We interpret both results in the broader context of Calabi–Yau triangulated categories.

Let G be the Lie group ${\mathbb{R}}^2\rtimes {\mathbb{R}}^+$ endowed with the Riemannian symmetric space structure. Take a distinguished basis $X_0,\, X_1,\,X_2$ of left-invariant vector fields of the Lie algebra of G, and consider the Laplacian $\Delta=-\sum_{i=0}^2X_i^2$ and the first-order Riesz transforms $\mathcal R_i=X_i\Delta^{-1/2}$, $i=0,1,2$. We first show that the atomic Hardy space H1 in G introduced by the authors in a previous paper does not admit a characterization in terms of the Riesz transforms $\mathcal R_i$. It is also proved that two of these Riesz transforms are bounded from H1 to H1.

We provide a uniform bound on the partial sums of multiplicative functions under very general hypotheses. As an application, we give a nearly optimal estimate for the count of $n \le x$ for which the Alladi–Erdős function $A(n) = \sum_{p^k \parallel n} k p$ takes values in a given residue class modulo q, where q varies uniformly up to a fixed power of $\log x$. We establish a similar result for the equidistribution of the Euler totient function $\phi(n)$ among the coprime residues to the ‘correct’ moduli q that vary uniformly in a similar range and also quantify the failure of equidistribution of the values of $\phi(n)$ among the coprime residue classes to the ‘incorrect’ moduli.

We give a criterion for separability of subgroups of certain outer automorphism groups. This answers questions of Hagen and Sisto, by strengthening and generalizing a result of theirs on mapping class groups.

In this paper, we show that for a large natural class of vertex operator algebras (VOAs) and their modules, the Zhu’s algebras and bimodules (and their g-twisted analogs) are Noetherian. These carry important information about the representation theory of the VOA, and its fusion rules, and the Noetherian property gives the potential for (non-commutative) algebro-geometric methods to be employed in their study.

Let $r_{1}, r_{2}, m$ be integers with $0 \lt r_{1} \lt r_{2} \lt m$ and $2\mid r_{1}$. In this paper, we prove that there exist two sets C and D with $C\cup D=\mathbb{N}$ and $C\cap D=(r_{1}+m\mathbb{N})\cup (r_{2}+m\mathbb{N})$ such that $R_{C}(n)=R_{D}(n)$ for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$ if and only if there exists a positive integer l such that $r_{1}=2^{2l+1}-2, r_{2}=2^{2l+1}-1, m=2^{2l+2}-2$.

Let Γ be a finite graph and let $A(\Gamma)$ be the corresponding right-angled Artin group. From an arbitrary basis $\mathcal B$ of $H^1(A(\Gamma),\mathbb F)$ over an arbitrary field, we construct a natural graph $\Gamma_{\mathcal B}$ from the cup product, called the cohomology basis graph. We show that $\Gamma_{\mathcal B}$ always contains Γ as a subgraph. This provides an effective way to reconstruct the defining graph Γ from the cohomology of $A(\Gamma)$, to characterize the planarity of the defining graph from the algebra of $A(\Gamma)$ and to recover many other natural graph-theoretic invariants. We also investigate the behaviour of the cohomology basis graph under passage to elementary subminors and show that it is not well-behaved under edge contraction.

Recently, it is proven that positive harmonic functions defined in the unit disc or the upper half-plane in $\mathbb{C}$ are contractions in hyperbolic metrics [14]. Furthermore, the same result does not hold in higher dimensions as shown by given counterexamples [16]. In this paper, we shall show that positive (or bounded) harmonic functions defined in the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ are Lipschitz in hyperbolic metrics. The involved method in main results allows to establish essential improvements of Schwarz type inequalities for monogenic functions in Clifford analysis [24, 25] and octonionic analysis [21] in a unified approach.

We give a complete combinatorial classification of the parabolic Verma modules in the principal block of the parabolic category $\mathcal{O}$ associated with a minimal or a maximal parabolic subalgebra of the special linear Lie algebra for which the answer to Kostant’s problem is positive.

The notion of a strongly dense subgroup was introduced by Breuillard, Green, Guralnick and Tao: a subgroup Γ of a semi-simple $\mathbb{Q}$ algebraic group $\mathcal{G}$ is called strongly dense if every pair of non-commuting elements generate a Zariski dense subgroup. Amongst other things, Breuillard et al. prove that there exist strongly dense free subgroups in $\mathcal{G}({\mathbb{R}})$ and ask whether or not a Zariski dense subgroup of $\mathcal{G}(\mathbb{R})$ always contains a strongly dense free subgroup. In this paper, we answer this for many surface subgroups of $\textrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$.

Let (K, v) be a valued field and $\phi\in K[x]$ be any key polynomial for a residue-transcendental extension w of v to K(x). In this article, using the ϕ-Newton polygon of a polynomial $f\in K[x]$ (with respect to w), we give a lower bound for the degree of an irreducible factor of f. This generalizes the result given in Jakhar and Srinivas (On the irreducible factors of a polynomial II, J. Algebra 556 (2020), 649–655).

In this article, $\mathcal{F}_{S}(G)$ denotes the fusion category of G on a Sylow p-subgroup S of G where p denotes a prime. A subgroup K of G has normal complement in G if there is a normal subgroup T of G satisfying that G = KT and $T \cap K = 1$. We investigate the supersolvability of $\mathcal{F}_{S}(G)$ under the assumption that some subgroups of S are normal in G or have normal complement in G.
