We use integral-field spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini instrument GMOS-IFU (Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph Integral Field Unit) to map the gas distribution, excitation and kinematics in the central kpc of 11 nearby active galaxies. We use channel maps to quantify the ionised gas masses, mass outflow rates and powers of the outflows in order to gauge the feedback effect of these outflows on the host galaxies. We compare this method with others previously used to calculate the feedback power of such outflows.

We present a preliminary analysis of the Strömgren uvby photometry of the magnetic CP stars obtained using the Four College Automated Photometric Telescope for its 21.5 years of operation ending in Fall 2012. We summarize the photometry for all the FCAPT mCP stars that have been published to date. We do not find any significant correlation between the amplitudes of variation in the uvby filters and the periods. A small number of stars show anomalous behaviour of the v filter which will be discussed in a future study.

Study of the composition from diverse sources of the Universe helps to us to understand their evolution. Molecular spectroscopy provides detailed information of the observed objects. We present a small study of the starburst NGC 253 with ALMA at 1mm. We detect the prebiotic molecules NH2CHO, and CNCHO. We obtain the integrated intensity maps and abundances of HNCO, CH3OH, H3O+ and CH3C2H. We propose the use of Artificial Intelligence for big data to find prebiotic molecules in galaxies.

This is a preliminary survey of astronomy topics incorporated into the Malaysian national school syllabus. Topics directly relevant to astronomy are situated within the general science subject from Year 4 (age 10 years old) until Year 9 (age 15 years old) and are grouped under four main themes: Earth-Sun-Moon system, the Solar System, Stars, and Exploration of Outer Space. Contemporary topics such as exoplanets and astrobiology are not explicitly mentioned, but students are required to engage in hypothetical thinking by speculating on planetary diversity and its implications for life in the Universe. We characterize the astronomy content in the Malaysian national school syllabus to be life-centric and relatively open-ended.

Observing high resolution optical to infrared spectra is crucial to understanding how energy is generated in galaxies. We present follow-up optical Keck-II/DEIMOS and infrared Keck-I/MOSFIRE spectra of ∼200 galaxies in the AKARI/North Ecliptic Pole Deep survey region at intermediate redshift. From rest-frame optical emission lines, we classify most of our objects as star-forming (53%), with the MIR selection favoring relatively massive galaxies (median log M/M⊙∼ 10.3). In addition, we combine our spectroscopic redshifts with UV to FIR photometry as inputs in order to model SEDs with CIGALE, and we measure the PAH 7.7 μm luminosity as an SFR indicator.

The recent calculations of atomic data for ions of astrophysical interest are reviewed with a focus on work performed in Cambridge. The calculations have been benchmarked against high-resolution laboratory and astrophysical spectra. A framework for assessing uncertainties in atomic data has also been developed. Long-standing discrepancies in predicted spectral line intensities have been resolved, and a significant number of levels in coronal ions have finally been identified, improving the modelling of the extreme-ultraviolet and soft X-ray spectral regions. Recent improvements based on collisional-radiative modelling are presented. They are relevant for the modelling of satellite lines in the X-rays and for solving the long-standing problems in the chromosphere-corona transition in stellar atmospheres.

We report on multi-wavelength ultraviolet (UV) high-resolution observations taken with the IRIS satellite during the emergence phase of an emerging flux region embedded in the unipolar plage of active region NOAA 12529. These data are complemented by measurements taken with the spectropolarimeter aboard the Hinode satellite and by observations from SDO.

In the photosphere, we observe the appearance of opposite emerging polarities, separating from each other, and cancellation with a pre-existing flux concentration of the plage.

In the upper atmospheric layers, recurrent brightenings resembling UV bursts, with counterparts in all UV/EUV filtergrams, are identified in the EFR site. In addition, plasma ejections are observed at chromospheric level. Most important, we unravel a signature of plasma heated up to 1 MK detecting Fe XII emission in the core of the brightening sites.

Comparing these findings with previous observations and numerical models, we suggest evidence of several long-lasting, small-scale magnetic reconnection episodes between the new bipolar EFR and the ambient field.

We present recommendations for teachers and educators of science, based on the results of a survey carried out among secondary-school students from Poland, Australia, and the USA.

Resolved observations of star-forming galaxies at cosmic noon with the Hubble Space Telescope and large ground-based facilities provide a view on the spatial distribution of stars, gas and dust, and probe gaseous motions revealing the central gravitational potential and local feedback processes at play. In this paper, we review recent insights gained from such observations, with an emphasis on results obtained through optical/near-infrared imaging and imaging spectroscopy. Their context and implications are documented more fully in a forthcoming review article by Förster Schreiber & Wuyts (in prep).

The infrared (IR) galaxies detected at Herschel/SPIRE 250 μm band over the AKARI’s NEP-Wide field are various types of dusty star-forming (SF) galaxies ranging from quiescent to starbursts, having mid-IR polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features near 8 μm. The measurements of the 8 μm luminosity (L8μm) along with the total infrared luminosity (LIR) based on the physical modeling of SEDs a take unique advantage of the continuous near- to mid-IR coverage, far-IR data points, and spectroscopically determined accurate redshifts. Our sample shows shortage of 8 μm luminosity compared to the total IR luminosity. This deficit gets severe in more luminous IR galaxies, suggesting PAH molecules in these galaxies are destroyed by a strong radiation field from SF regions, or the existence of a unexpectedly large amount of cold dust in the ISM that contributes to LIR.

We aim to leverage the transformational science enabled by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) to study the physics of, and near, the black holes in a sample of galaxies covering a large parameter space in SMBH mass, accretion rate, and jet power. To this end, we work on a sample of nearby galaxies whose directly measured black hole masses and distances imply that 40 micro-arcsec EHT observations will resolve the central engine at < 100 Schwarzschild radius resolution. As an EHT member, I will present the results from the study of M87 and will discuss the impact of this finding on the study of nearby AGNs. The study of the SMBHs in these systems using molecular and ionised gas kinematics will also be presented.

High-resolution stellar spectra are important tools for studying the chemical evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy, tracing the origin of chemical elements, and characterizing planetary host stars. Large amounts of data have been accumulating, in particular in the optical and infrared wavelength regions. The observed spectral lines are interpreted using model spectra that are calculated based on transition data for numerous species, in particular neutral and singly ionized atoms. We rely heavily on the continuous activities of laboratory astrophysics groups that produce high-quality experimental and theoretical atomic data for the relevant transitions. We give examples for the precision with which the chemical composition of stars observed by different surveys can be determined, and discuss future needs from laboratory astrophysics.

We used Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) long slit medium-resolution G430M and G750M spectra to analyze the extended [O III] λ5007 emission in a sample of twelve QSO2s from Reyes et al. (2008). The purpose of the study was to determine the properties of the mass outflows and their role in AGN feedback. We measured fluxes and velocities as functions of deprojected radial distances. Using photoionization models and ionizing luminosities derived from [O III], we were able to estimate the densities for the emission-line gas. From these results, we derived masses, mass outflow rates, kinetic energies and kinetic luminosity rates as a function of radial distance for each of the targets. Masses are several times 103 - 107 solar masses, which are comparable to values determined from a recent photoionization study of Mrk 34 (Revalski). Additionally, we are studying the possible role of X-ray winds in these QSO2s.

Magnetic flux rope (MFR) is closely connected with solar eruptions, such as flares and coronal mass ejections. The classical scenario assumes a single MFR for each eruption, but it is reasonable to expect multiple MFRs in a complex active region (AR). Statistically investigating AR 11897, we verify the existence of multiple MFR proxies during the AR evolution. Recently, AR 12673 in 2017 September produced the two largest flares in Solar Cycle 24. The evolutions of the AR magnetic fields and the two large flares reveal that significant flux emergence and successive interactions between different emerging dipoles resulted in the formations of multiple MFRs and twisted loop bundles, which successively erupted like a chain reaction within several minutes before the peaks of the two flares. We propose that the eruptions of a multi-flux-rope system can rapidly release enormous magnetic energy and result in large flares in solar AR.

We present 1-second cadence, precise optical observations from SOFIA and Palomar of a sample of nearby supermassive black holes. The observations were taken to identify the shortest timescale variability in the nuclear photometry which may be associated with instabilities in the accretion flow in the immediate vicinity of the black hole. The shortest timescale variability, if associated with the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO), can then be used to estimate the spin of the black hole. Despite 1% precision photometry, we obtained a non-detection of any significant variability in the nucleus of M32 (Mbh ∼ 2.5 × 106 Mȯ). Given the density of the stellar cusp, this argues for a scenario where 1000 Msun seed black holes formed from the coalescence of less massive black holes, which then accrete the gas produced by stellar interactions/winds. In more luminous systems however, we find a significant deection of variability and present hypotheses to explain the signal and thereby the origin of supermassive black holes.

Ubiquitous strong mid-infrared emission bands are observed towards many objects and are attributed to interstellar Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are ionized, or even dissociate, when exposed to strong interstellar radiation fields. By means of ion trap mass spectrometry, light-induced dissociation patterns of PAH cations are measured and the mid-infrared spectroscopic signatures of the parent ion and its dissociation products are characterized. These results are then combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to obtain insight into the dissociation characteristics of interstellar PAHs at a molecular level.

While the evolution of spatially-integrated properties of galaxies are relatively well constrained across cosmic time, many of the most fundamental processes are not well understood, especially down to the sub-galactic scales, where frontier questions in galaxy evolution lie: How did galactic spheroids form? How did galaxies and their supermassive black holes co-evolve? With the angular resolution capability of ∼tens of milliarcseconds, ALMA has conferred extinction- independent views of cold gas and dust distributions within individual z ∼ 1 – 4 galaxies at resolutions approaching ∼ 100 pc, thereby opening new avenues to study sub-galactic properties of galaxies at the peak of their assembly. In this talk, I will review recent findings and ongoing challenges enabled by ALMA's extinction-independent, spatially-resolved views of star forming galaxies, particularly the galactic substructures, e.g., clumps (or the lack thereof) from both field and gravitationally-lensed galaxies, and their implications on the bulge assembly scenario. I will also discuss a new synergistic approach between radio and millimeter observations (using, e.g., VLA and ALMA) to independently pinpoint the locations of star-forming region and AGN down to < 100 pc at z ∼ 3. Lastly, I will discuss the planned surveys with JWST in the first year of operation, and ways that the first datasets can be combined with ALMA to provide new breakthroughs and plan future observations to utilize Webb to the fullest.

We employ Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) data to study the ionized and very ionized gas phase of the feedback in Circinus, the closest Seyfert 2 galaxy. The analysis of the nebular emission allowed us to detect a remarkable high-ionization gas outflow, out of the galaxy plane, traced by the coronal lines [Fe viii] 6089Å and [Fe x] 6374Å, extending up to 700 parsecs north-west from the nucleus. The gas kinematics reveal expanding gas shells with velocities of a few hundred km s-1, spatially coincident with prominent hard X-ray emission detected by Chandra. Density and temperature sensitive line ratios show that the extended high-ionization gas is characterized by a temperature of up to 18000 K and a gas density of ne > 102 cm−3. We propose two scenarios consistent with the observations to explain the high-ionization component of the outflow: an active galactic nuclei (AGN) ejection that took place ⁓105 yr ago or local gas excitation by shocks produced by the passage of a radio jet.

Ural Federal University is one of the main and most effective centers for educating young astronomers in Russia. The traditional student scientific conferences “Physics of Space” have been successfully held annually in Kourovka Astronomical Observatory of the Ural Federal University for 50 years and have gained recognition not only in Russia. The conference initiated many educational initiatives both in the Ural region and, in general, in Russia. The astronomy education system implemented by UrFU and partners includes the following activities: 1) education and career guidance of schoolchildren in the Lyceum of UrFU, 2) activities to attract applicants, 3) training at the speciality, undergraduate, and graduate level, 4) participation in the student conferences “Physics of Space”, 5) postgraduate studies, 6) cooperation in the field of education. This activity ensures the attraction of promising youth to scientific research.

We report the first detection of [NII] 122 μm line toward a QSO-SMG pair, BRI 1202-0725, at z = 4.7 using ALMA. Combining with [NII] 205 μm line detection and taking the line ratio of [NII]122/[NII]205, we constrain electron densities of both galaxies. The derived electron densities are ${26_{ - 11}^{ + 12}$ and ${134_{ - 39}^{ + 50}$ cm−3 for the SMG and the QSO, respectively, which are the first measurements for galaxies at z > 4. The electron density of the SMG is comparable to the Galactic plane and the average of local spiral galaxies, while the value for the QSO is comparable to local starbursts and optical-line based measurements for star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 2–3. Considering the similar star-formation rates (SFRs) of ≍ 1000 M⊙ yr−1 for both galaxies, our results suggest a large scatter of electron densities at fixed SFR and caution against using optical lines for dusty starbursts.
