In this work we have analyzed turbulent plasma in the kinetic scale by the characterization of magnetic fluctuations time series. Considering numerical Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations we apply a method known as MultiFractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (MFDFA) to study the fluctuations of solar-wind-like plasmas in thermodynamic equilibrium (represented by Maxwellian velocity distribution functions), and out of equilibrium plasma represented by Tsallis velocity distribution functions, characterized by the kappa (κ) parameter, to stablish relations between the fractality of magnetic fluctuation and the kappa parameter.

We have entered an era where the gas mass estimates of distant galaxies do not rely on a single tracer but rather on an inventory of different and independent methods, much like the case for the determination of the star formation rate (SFR) of the galaxies. This is crucial as the traditional Mgas tracers, i.e. low-J CO transition lines and dust continuum emission are becoming highly uncertain as we move to higher redshifts due to metallicity and CMB effects. Here, we present a homogeneous and statistically significant investigation of the use of atomic carbon as an alternative Mgas tracer (Valentino et al.2018) and provide evidence of optically thick far-IR emission in high−z starbursts that point towards higher dust temperatures and lower dust and gas mass estimates than previously inferred (Cortzen et al.2019, submitted). Finally, we present direct observations of the effect of the CMB on the far-IR SEDs of high-z SBs, manifested by unphyscally large (β = 2.5–3.5) apparent spectral indexes in R-J tail (Jin et al. 2019, submitted).

Feedback from accreting supermassive black holes is often invoked in galaxy evolution models to inhibit star formation, truncate galaxy growth, and establish the observed black-hole/bulge mass correlation. We are studying outflows and feedback in a unique sample of extremely red quasars (ERQs) during the peak epoch of galaxy formation (at redshifts 2.3 < z < 3.4). We identified ERQs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) quasar catalog based on their extremely red i–W3 colors, but we find that ERQs typically have a suite of other extreme properties including 1) a high incidence of blueshifted broad absorption lines, 2) broad emission lines with unusually large rest equivalent widths (REWs), peculiar “wingless” profiles, and frequent large blueshifts (reaching ˜8740 km s-1), and 3) characteristically very broad and blueshifted [OIII] 4959,5007Å lines that trace ionized outflows at speeds up to ˜6700 km s-1. We propose that these ERQs represent a young quasar population with powerful outflows on the precipice of causing important disruptive feedback effects in their host galaxies.

Detecting the seed black holes from which quasars formed is extremely challenging; however, those seeds that did not grow into supermassive should be found as intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) of 100 – 105 M⊙ in local dwarf galaxies. The use of deep multiwavelength surveys has revealed that a population of actively accreting IMBHs (low-mass AGN) exists in dwarf galaxies at least out to z ˜3. The black hole occupation fraction of these galaxies suggests that the early Universe seed black holes formed from direct collapse of gas, which is reinforced by the possible flattening of the black hole-galaxy scaling relations at the low-mass end. This scenario is however challenged by the finding that AGN feedback can have a strong impact on dwarf galaxies, which implies that low-mass AGN in dwarf galaxies might not be the untouched relics of the early seed black holes. This has important implications for seed black hole formation models.

Girls’ under-representation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education is deep rooted and puts a detrimental brake on progress towards sustainable development. Both education and gender equality are an integral part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, as distinct Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UNESCO Report: Cracking the code: Girls’ and women’s education in STEM provides a global snapshot of this underrepresentation and the factors behind it. The fight against stereotypes to ‘crack the code’, or to decipher the factors that hinder or facilitate girls’ and women’s participation in STEM (and particularly in Astronomy) education must take into account the persisting dichotomy between the so called two cultures.

The ALMA-ALPINE [CII] survey (A2C2S) aims at characterizing the properties of normal star-forming galaxies (SFGs) observed in the [CII]-158μm line in the period of rapid mass assembly at redshifts 4 < z < 6. Here we present the survey and the selection of 118 galaxies observed with ALMA, selected from large samples of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts derived from UV-rest frame. The observed properties derived from the ALMA data are presented and discussed in terms of the overall detection rate in [CII] and far-IR continuum. The sample is representative of the SFG population at these redshifts. The overall detection rate is 61% down to a flux limit of 0.07 mJy. From a visual inspection of the [CII] data cubes together with the large wealth of ancillary data we find a surprisingly wide range of galaxy types, including 32.4% mergers, 25.7% extended and dispersion dominated, 13.5% rotating discs, and 16.2% compact, the remaining being too faint to be classified. ALPINE sets a reference sample for the gas distribution in normal star-forming galaxies at a key epoch in galaxy assembly, ideally suited for studies with future facilities like JWST and ELTs.

I will describe a series of experiments designed to use measurements of the cold ISM content of quasars to constrain the effectiveness of AGN feedback. I will propose new star formation rate indicators and apply them to constrain the star formation rate in quasars.

The high energy X-ray and UV radiation fields of host stars play a crucial role in determining the atmospheric conditions and habitability of potentially-habitable exoplanets. This paper focuses on the major surveys of the UV/X-ray emissions of M- and K-type exoplanet hosts that have been undertaken by the MUSCLES and MegaMUSCLES Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury programs and associated contemporaneous X-ray and ground-based observations. The quiescent and flaring radiation (both photons and implied particles) were observed from this extensive sample of relatively old, low mass, exoplanet host stars and show that, from the viewpoint of a habitable-zone exoplanet, there is no such thing as an “inactive” M dwarf star. The resulting implications are significant for planetary habitability. Extensive monitoring of the X-ray/UV emission from a representative younger M dwarf is also presented and the direct stellar effects that influence exoplanets during the earlier phases of their formation and evolution discussed.

Spectra of exoplanets, cool stars and brown dwarfs contain features due to molecular absorptions. Modelling these requires extensive line lists which are provided by the ExoMol project. Here we report on current progress and future prospects for the project.

Combining cosmological hydrodynamic simulations and radiative transfer (RT) calculations, we present predictions of multi-wavelength radiative properties of the first galaxies at z ∼ 6–5. We find that intermittent star formation due to supernova (SN) feedback causes the escape fraction of UV photons to fluctuate rapidly, which then produces the observed diversity of SEDs for high-z galaxies. The simulated galaxies make rapid transition between UV-bright and IR-bright phase, and our RT calculations suggest that dust temperatures in the first galaxies are higher than z < 3 galaxies with ∼ 60 K.

Using a cold plasma reactor in which we inject an organosilicon molecular precursor, we investigate chemical mechanisms that can be involved in dust formation in evolved stars. By injecting metal atoms into the gas-phase, we investigate the role of metals on dust composition. We show the formation of composite particles made of pure metal (silver) nanoparticles embedded in an organosilicon dust. We study the impact of oxygen and show that it can inhibit dust formation, likely through the destruction of nucleation seeds.

ISM comprises multiple components, including molecular, neutral, and ionized gas, and dust, which are related to each other mainly through star formation – some are fuel for star formation (molecular gas) while some are the products of it (ionized gas, dust). To fully understand the physics of star formation and its evolution throughout cosmic time, it is crucial to measure and observe different ISM components of galaxies out to high redshifts. I will review the current status of near-IR studies of galaxies during the peak of star formation activity (z ∼ 1 – 3). Using rest-frame optical emission lines, we measure dust, star formation, and gaseous properties of galaxies. JWST will advance such studies by probing lower luminosities and higher redshifts, owing to its significantly higher sensitivity. Incorporating ALMA observations of cold dust and molecular gas at z > 1 will give us a nearly complete picture of the ISM in high-redshift galaxies over a large dynamic range in mass.

We report on our project to study the activity in both the Sun and low mass stars. Utilising high cadence, Hα observations of a filament eruption made using the CRISP spectropolarimeter mounted on the Swedish Solar Telescope has allowed us to determine 3D velocity maps of the event. To gain insight into the physical mechanism which drives the event we have qualitatively compared our observation to a 3D MHD reconnection model. Solar-type and low mass stars can be highly active producing flares with energies exceeding erg. Using K2 and TESS data we find no correlation between the number of flares and the rotation phase which is surprising. Our solar flare model can be used to aid our understanding of the origin of flares in other stars. By scaling up our solar model to replicate observed stellar flare energies, we investigate the conditions needed for such high energy flares.

Radio galaxies are ideal sites to scrutinize AGN feedback physics, as they are massive galaxies with jets that interact with the surrounding ISM. I will present a detailed analysis of the recent star formation history and conditions of a starbursting, massive radio galaxy at z = 2.6, PKS 0529-549. In the 8.5-hour VLT/X-Shooter spectrum, we detect unambiguous signatures of stellar photospheric absorption lines originating from OB-stars. Comparison with model spectra shows that more than one burst took place in its recent past: the most recent one at 4 − 7 Myr, and another aged ⩾20 Myr. ALMA observations of the [CI] atomic carbon emission line indicates that it has a low molecular gas fraction (∼13%) and short depletion time (∼40 Myr). Most intriguing is the modest velocity dispersion (⩽50 km/s) of these photospheric lines and the ALMA [CI] cold gas. We attribute its efficient star formation to compressive gas motions, induced by radio jets and/or interaction. Star formation works in concert with the AGN to remove any residual molecular gas and eventually leads to quenching.

We measure the evolution of the UV upturn color for galaxies on the red sequence in clusters at 0 < z < 0.7 and to luminosity levels L ∼ L*. We show that the UV upturn color does not change until at least z = 0.55 but becomes significantly redder at z = 0.7. This is the first detection of evolution in the UV upturn. Our observations are inconsistent with all models proposed for its origin except the presence of a population of helium enriched stars, with helium abundances above 42 % and formed at z > 4.

This presentation will provide an introduction to the concept of lifelong learning, exploring its relevance and potential for future human development. Lifelong learning – comprising learning in formal education, in non-formal contexts and informal ways – plays an increasingly important role within society and also within the higher education sector. Universities have a social responsibility towards society, conducting research that benefits society, making research results widely and openly available, communicating research to the wider community, and providing learning opportuntities for people of all ages and social backgrounds.

Increasingly, the global community acknowledges that lifelong learning – available to all, at every stage and in every sphere of people’s lives – is key to addressing the multiple challenges faced by humanity. Lifelong learning fosters people’s capacity to deal with change and to build the future they want. This is profoundly important given the disruption and uncertainly resulting from the familiar threats and opportunities of demographic change, the climate crisis, the rapid advance of technology and, more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. In such uncertain times, new ways of learning provision have to be found.

Learner autonomy is the foundation of this lifelong learning culture. Learning to learn has become a basic competence, as has managing one’s own learning journey and creating one’s own learning biography. Understanding all levels of learning as learner-centric presents a crucial shift to fundamentally thinking and planning education with demand in mind. This way, learners are active agents rather than passive recipients of prescribed knowledge. They co-design and use any learning process and its outcomes actively to realize their potential as fully as possible.

Learning is understood as a collective process, taking place among peer groups, within communities and across generations. Education emphasizes becoming global citizens who care about each other, other communities and the planet. Consequently, lifelong learning is for all, and learning opportunities can be created for and with the most excluded learners. There is a global learning ecosystem, built collectively to inspire and empower learners with a plethora of opportunities. The learning ecosystem integrates diverse learning modalities fluidly, including all digital-based and real-life experiential learning as well as blends of formal, non-formal and informal learning. The learning opportunities allow for planned or spontaneous, individual of collective learning. There is easy access to face-to-face and online learning opportunities as local infrastructure, global connectivity and sponsored devices are available for all. New pedagogical and andragogical principles have been developed, including innovative blended learning concepts that integrate digital and face-to-face elements while considering learners’ specific needs.

The presentation will link these future-oriented ideas of lifelong learning with the higher education context, the open science movement and explore ways in which research-based knowledge can be provided to learners in different contexts.

We present an update of our ongoing project to characterise the impact of radio jets on the interstellar medium (ISM). This is done by tracing the distribution, kinematics and excitation of the molecular gas at high spatial resolution using ALMA. The radio active galactic nuclei (AGN) studied are in the interesting phase of having a recently born radio jet. In this stage, the plasma jets can have the largest impact on the ISM, as also predicted by state-of-the-art simulations. The two targets we present have quite different ages, allowing us to get snapshots of the effects of radio jets as they grow and evolve. Interestingly, both also host powerful quasar emission, making them ideal for studying the full impact of AGN. The largest mass outflow rate of molecular gas is found in a radio galaxy () hosting a newly born radio jet still in the early phase of emerging from an obscuring cocoon of gas and dust. Although the molecular mass outflow rate is high (few hundred), the outflow is limited to the inner few hundred pc region. In a second object (), the jet is larger (a few kpc) and is in a more advanced evolutionary phase. In this object, the distribution of the molecular gas is reminiscent of what is seen, on larger scales, in cool-core clusters hosting radio galaxies. Interestingly, gas deviating from quiescent kinematics (possibly indicating an outflow) is not very prominent, limited only to the very inner region, and has a low mass outflow rate. Instead, on kpc scales, the radio lobes appear associated with depressions in the distribution of the molecular gas. This suggests that the lobes have broken out from the dense nuclear region. However, the AGN does not appear to be able, at present, to stop the star formation observed in this galaxy. These results support the idea that the effects of the radio source start in the very first phases by producing outflows which, however, tend to be limited to the kpc region. After that, the effects turn into producing large-scale bubbles which could, in the long term, prevent the surrounding gas from cooling. Thus, our results provide a way to characterise the effect of radio jets in different phases of their evolution and in different environments, bridging the studies done for radio galaxies in clusters.

Solar flares, suddenly releasing a large amount of magnetic energy, are one of the most energetic phenomena on the Sun. For the major flares (M- and X-class flares), there exist strong-gradient polarity-inversion lines in the pre-flare photospheric magnetograms. Some parameters (e.g., electric current, shear angle, free energy) are used to measure the magnetic non-potentiality of active regions, and the kernels of major flares coincide with the highly non-potential regions. Magnetic flux emergence and cancellation, shearing motion, and sunspot rotation observed in the photosphere are deemed to play an important role in the energy buildup and flare trigger. Solar active region 12673 produced many major flares, among which the X9.3 flare is the largest one in solar cycle 24. According to the newly proposed block-induced eruption model, the block-induced complex structures built the flare-productive active region and the X9.3 flare was triggered by an erupting filament due to the kink instability.

The “Turn on the Night” associated event had presentations on the latest dark skies protection issues considered by the IAU’s Dark and Quiet Skies working groups. Presentations were also made on dark skies education programs and cultural/scientific heritage.

We present new constraints on the cosmic cold molecular gas evolution out to redshift 6 based on systematic mining of the public ALMA archive in the COSMOS field (A3 COSMOS). Our A3 COSMOS dataset contains ∼ 700 galaxies (0.3 ≲ z ≲ 6) with high-confidence ALMA detection and multi-wavelength SEDs. Combining with ∼ 1,200 CO-observed galaxies at 0 ≲ z ≲ 4 (75% at z < 0.1) in the literature, we parameterize galaxies’ molecular gas depletion time and gas fraction each as a function of stellar mass, offset from the star-forming main-sequence and cosmic age. We propose a new functional form which provides a better fit and implies a “downsizing” effect and “mass-quenching”. By adopting galaxy stellar mass functions and applying our gas fraction function, we obtain a cosmic cold molecular gas density evolution in agreement with recent CO blind field surveys as well as semi-analytic modeling. These together provide us a coherent picture of galaxy cold molecular gas, SFR and stellar mass evolution.
