We present Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph Integral Field Unit (GMOS-IFU) observations of the inner 1.1 kpc of the interacting Seyfert galaxy NGC 2992. From full spectral synthesis we found that the stellar population is mainly (up to 80 per cent of the total light) composed by an old (t ≥ 1.4 Gyr) metal-rich (Z ≥ 2.0) populations with a smaller but considerable contribution (up to 30 per cent) from young (t ≤ 100 Myr) metal-poor (Z ≥ 1.0) populations. The gas kinematics presents two main components: one from gas in orbit in the galaxy disk and an outflow with mass outflow rate of ˜2 Mʘ yr–1 and a kinematic power of ˜ 2 × 1040 erg s–1.

In Panda et al.2018a, we constructed a refined sample from the original Shen et al.(2011) QSO catalog. Based on our hypothesis — the main driver of the Quasar Main Sequence is the maximum of the accretion disk temperature (TBBB) defined by the Big Blue Bump on the Spectral Energy Distribution (Panda et al.2017; Panda et al.2018b). We select the four extreme sources that have RFeII ⩾ 4.0 and use {CIGALE (Boquien et al.2018) to fit their multi—band photometric data. We also perform detailed spectral fitting including the Fe II pseudo—continuum (based on Śniegowska et al.2018)) to estimate and compare the value of RFEII. We show the dependence of FeII strength on changing metallicity.

We present results from high-resolution, zoom-in cosmological simulations to study the effect of feedback from galactic outflows on the physical and Lyα properties of high-redshift galaxies in highly overdense and normal environments at z >∼6. The Lyα properties have been obtained by post-processing the simulations with a Monte-Carlo radiative transfer (RT) code. Our results demonstrate that galactic outflows play an important role in regulating the growth of massive galaxies in overdense regions as well as the temperature and metallicity of the intergalactic medium. In particular, we find that galactic outflows are necessary to reproduce the observed Lyα luminosity functions as well as the apparent Lyα luminosity, line width and equivalent width distributions of luminous Lyα emitters at z ∼ 6.

Thermal desorption experiments of Formamide (NH2CHO) and methylamine (CH3NH2) were performed in LERMA-Cergy laboratory to determine the values of the desorption energies of formamide and methylamine from analogues of interstellar dust grain surfaces, and to understand their interaction with water ice. We found that more than 95 % of solid NH2CHO diffuses through the np-ASW ice surface towards the graphitic substrate, and is released into the gas phase with a desorption energy distribution Edes = (7460 – 9380) K, measured with the best-fit pre-exponential factor A=1018 s-1. Whereas, the desorption energy distribution of methylamine from the np-ASW ice surface (Edes =3850-8420 K) is measured with the best-fit pre-exponential factor A=1012s-1. A fraction of solid methylamine, of about 0.15 monolayer diffuses through the water ice surface towards the HOPG substrate, and desorbs later, with higher binding energies (5050-8420 K), which exceed that of the crystalline water ice (Edes =4930 K), calculated with the same pre-exponential factor A=1012 s-1.

NGC 7469 is a well-known type 1 AGN with a cirumnuclear star formation ring. It has previous detections of X-rays warm absorbers and an infrared biconical outflow. We analysed archival MUSE/VLT observations of this galaxy in order to look for an optical counterpart of these outflows. We report spatially resolved winds in the [O III] λ5007 emission line in two regimes: a high velocity regime possibly associated with the AGN and a slower one associated with the massive star formation of the ring. This slower regime is also detected with Hβ.

Spatially resolved studies of galaxies in the high-redshift Universe have traditionally been reliant on data at rest-frame optical and UV wavelengths, which can be biased towards the least dust-obscured galaxies. For several years now, we have been able to resolve and probe the morphology of longer-wavelength emission from distant galaxies with ALMA, and a number of recent ALMA studies were presented at the IAU Symposium No. 352. These included our study of the resolved multi-wavelength emission of galaxies at z ∼ 2. As part of the SHiZELS collaboration, we are mapping the Hα emission line (from SINFONI/VLT), UV continuum (from HST), and the far-infrared (from ALMA) emission from a small sample of Hα-selected galaxies. In this proceedings paper, we showcase the high quality of our data, and the spectacular structures displayed by one of our most dusty sources. We also provide an overview of some highly complementary simulation-based work, using galaxies drawn from the FIRE-2 zoom-in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. Using sophisticated radiative transfer techniques, we have derived predictions for the spatially-resolved emission of a sample of star-forming galaxies, from rest-frame far-ultraviolet to the far-infrared. For both observed and simulated galaxies, emission maps show striking differences with wavelength, with the same galaxy appearing clumpy and extended in the far-ultraviolet yet compact at far-infrared wavelengths.

Students took an assembly-type telescope kit from a public elementary school and brought it to their homes in 2019. Three classes attempted to observe the Moon at home using the Kaifu-NAOJ Telescope Kit. As a result, all children observed the Moon at home using the kit. From their observations, around 90% identified the existence of craters and understood the reflection of sunlight on the Moon’s surface. As Covid-19 prevention measures in education, we propose the introduction of at-home telescopic observations for STEAM activities.

Planetary transits are used to measure the solar radius since the beginning of the 18th century and are the most accurate direct method to measure potentially long-term variation in the solar size. Historical measures present a range of values dominated by systematic errors from different instruments and observers. Atmospheric seeing and black drop effect contribute as error sources for the precise timing of the planetary transit ground observations. Both Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) made observations of planetary transits from space to derive the solar radius. The International Astronomical Union approved the resolution B3 in 2015, defining a nominal solar radius of precisely 695,700 km. In this work, we show that this value is off by more than 300 km, which is one order of magnitude higher than the error of the most recent solar radius observations.

We have made a spectroscopic survey of luminous AGNs and quasars selected in the mid-infrared from Spitzer IRAC surveys. Mid-infrared selection is less affected by dust obscuration, and we find more high redshift quasars than are found in optical or hard X-ray surveys. We have derived luminosity functions for obscured and unobscured quasar populations, and we use these and spectral energy distribution fits to place constraints on host galaxy properties and quasar lifetimes.

Despite many theoretical studies and observations, we still do not fully understand the feeding mechanism in AGNs even in nearby galaxies, and how feedback from AGNs affects the gas dynamics itself in the galactic central regions. In this article, we summarize our recent theoretical studies and preliminary results in terms of the mass inflow and outflows on sub-parsec to 100 parsecs scales around AGNs. We introduce different studies: 1) How do galaxy-galaxy mergers trigger AGN activity and obscuration?, 2) How do the radiative feedback affect formation of outflows and obscuration of the nucleus? and 3) How does the AGN plus starburst feedback contribute to the obscuration?

In order to construct accurate Galaxy Evolution models, a more thorough understanding of the high SFRs seen at z > 2 is needed. To better understand AGNs at higher redshifts, we have conducted a multi-wavelength of 38 of the most luminous AGNs found in the SDSS catalogue at redshift z ∼ 4.8, powered by fast-growing supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Using Herschel/SPIRE observations, we found star formation rates (SFRs) of up to 4000 Solar masses per year. We believe that both the AGN and star formation of these objects are fed by a common reservoir of cold gas, and that this cold gas is due to in-falling matter from major mergers. In this talk, we present ALMA band-7 data of the [CII] λ157.74 m emission line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum of twelve luminous quasars at z∼4.8 in our search for dynamically interacting companions.

Submillimeter galaxies at z > 3 building up their central cores through compact starbursts with an effective radius of 1–2 kpc. Our ALMA high-resolution observations reveal off-center gas clumps in a submillimeter galaxy at z = 4.3, COSMOS-AzTEC-1, as well as a rotation-dominated disk. Exploiting the kinematic properties and the spatial distribution of gas mass surface density, we find that the starburst disk is gravitationally unstable. This result is consistent with a scenario where in-situ clumps are formed through disk instability. On the other hand, we find evidence for an ex-situ clump that does not corotate with the starburst disk. The accretion of such a non-corotating clump could stimulate violent disk instability, driving gas inflows into the central regions of the galaxy. Our results suggest that compact cores are formed through an extreme starburst due to a gravitational instability, triggered by non-corotating clumps.

This contribution explores the reframing of promoting Astronomy as popular science, inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through STEAM Innovation, integrating science and arts, such as Astro-Music and Space Art, would be a case in point of forced association. It redefines our methodology of Astronomy education and encourages the engagement of teachers from other disciplines. Supporting with user-centered design thinking, this pedagogy contributes effectively to the interactive teaching for solving real-life problems related to Astronomy.

The surfaces of most of the atmosphereless solar system bodies are referred to as regolith or layers of usually loosely connected fragmentary debris, produced by meteorite impacts. Measurement of light scattered from such surfaces provide information about the composition and structure of the surface. In the present work, the effect of porosity and particle size, on reflectance is studied for regolith like samples. For modelling the experimental data Hapke 2008 is used and found to be in good agreement with laboratory data. From the present study, it can be concluded that the physical properties of a regolith, such as porosity, particle size etc are effectively represented by albedo.

Interstellar dust is traced by not only thermal emission but also scattered light. The scattered light spectrum observed from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (IR) is useful to constrain some dust properties, such as size distribution, albedo, and composition. Milky Way Galaxy is a unique environment to observe the diffuse scattered light because we can extract it by removing the contribution of starlight. We have observed the UV to near-IR scattered light with space instruments, including Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE), Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and Multi-purpose Infra-Red Imaging System (MIRIS). The scattered light spectrum is marginally consistent with prediction from a recent dust model including carbonaceous and silicate grains with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). Based on the MIRIS observation of a diffuse cloud, we compare the scattered light color with the dust model with or without grains larger than 1 micrometer. The result shows that the color is consistent with the model without the large grains, which is consistent with recent simulations of dust growth in low-density regions. However, some observations have shown the spectral excess at ∼ 0.6 micrometer wavelength, suggesting the presence of extended red emission (ERE) which cannot be explained by the conventional dust model.

The laboratories at the Centre for Astrochemical Studies at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics are devoted to spectroscopic studies of molecules of astrophysical relevance. In particular, in this paper we report on the two experiments that can produce and probe unstable molecules, like radicals and ions.

Our aim is to explore the close environment of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and its connection to the host galaxy through the morphology and dynamics of the cold gas inside the central kpc in nearby AGN. We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of AGN feeding and feedback caught in action in NGC613 and NGC1808 at high resolution (few pc), part of the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) project. We detected trailing spirals inside the central 100 pc, efficiently driving the molecular gas into the SMBH, and molecular outflows driven by the AGN. We present preliminary results of the impact of massive winds induced by radio jets on galaxy evolution, based on observations of radio galaxies from the ALMA Radio-source Catalogue.

The Coma supercluster is one of the largest, nearby (∼100h−1Mpc) gravitationally bound structures known in the universe. It comprises two large clusters of galaxies and several galaxy groups intersected by a complex network of filaments, providing the perfect laboratory for studying the evolution of galaxies in a range of ‘continuous’ environments. We characterised the different components of the environment to study the properties of galaxies in the optical and ultraviolet (UV) wavebands. Our analysis shows that galaxies experience accelerated evolution as they approach the spine of the filament, suggesting that the intermediate-density environment prevalent in the filaments can accelerate the evolution of galaxies.
