Today's massive elliptical galaxies are primarily red-and-dead, dispersion supported ellipticals. The physical process(es) driving the shutdown or ‘quenching’ of star formation in these galaxies remains one of the least understood aspects of galaxy formation and evolution. Although today's spiral and elliptical galaxies exhibit a clear bimodality in their structures, kinematics, and stellar populations, it may be that the quenching and structural transformation do no occur simultaneously. In this talk I will present evidence that early quiescent galaxies, observed much closer to their quenching epoch at z ∼ 1, retain significant rotational support (∼ twice as much as local ellipticals). This suggests that the mechanisms responsible for shutting down star formation do not also have to destroy ordered motion in massive galaxies; the increased dispersion support could occur subsequently via hierarchical growth and minor merging. I will discuss this evidence in conjunction with recent ALMA studies of the dramatic range in molecular gas reservoirs of recently quenched high redshift galaxies to constrain quenching models. Finally, I will discuss prospects for extending spatially resolved spectroscopic studies of galaxies immediately following quenching with JWST and eventually 30-m class telescopes.

The identification of complex organic molecules, COMs, in inter- and circumstellar gas phase environments is steadily increasing. The formation of such COMs takes largely place on the icy dust grains, as has been shown in recent laboratory studies. Until now solid state features of smaller molecular species have been directly identified in these environments. The presented work on acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), ethanol (CH3CH2OH), and dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3) in different astronomically relevant ice environments and for temperatures in the range 15 to 160 Kelvin, provides the necessary tools to guide or interpret astronomical observations, specifically for upcoming James Webb Space Telescope observations.

The RadioAstron Space VLBI mission utilized the 10-m radio telescope on board the dedicated Spektr-R spacecraft to observe cosmic radio sources with an unprecedented angular resolution at centimeter wave lengths in total and polarized light. The longest baseline of the space-ground interferometer is about 350000 km. It operated in 2011–2019 together with 58 largest ground radio telescopes. Resolution as high as 10 microarcsec has been achieved. An overview of its AGN science results will be presented in the talk. It includes a probe of jet emission mechanism through brightness temperature measurements, reconstruction of magnetic field structure close to the jet origin using polarization data, jet formation and collimation study for well resolved nearby AGN, as well as observations and analysis of jet precession and plasma instabilities. We will also discuss a new scattering effect which was discovered by RadioAstron to affect high resolution radio measurements of AGN and SgrA*.

Namibia is world-renowned for its incredibly dark skies by the astronomy community, and yet, the country is not well recognised as a dark sky destination by tourists and travellers. Forged by a collaboration between the Universities of Oxford and Namibia, together we are using astronomy as a means for capacity-building and sustainable socio-economic growth via educating tour guides and promoting dark sky tourism to relevant stakeholders.

We have developed a new SED fitting tool specialized for frontier redshift galaxies. It is a common case for high-z galaxies that the available data are restricted to rich optical to near-infrared photometry and few far-infrared (FIR) data deep enough to detect the faint object (e.g., HST/WFC3 + Spitzer/IRAC + ALMA). In such situation, one cannot perform a complicated modeling of dust emission in FIR regime. We then adopt simple treatment for the dust emission using empirical LIRG templates. Instead, we adopt a sophisticated and physically motivated modeling for stellar and nebular emission parts in rest-frame UV-to-optical regime. Our new code fits not only broad band photometry but also spectral emission line flux. There is an option to fit observed SED with two templates with different physical properties. Our new code, PANHIT, is now in public, and was already applied to some high-z frontier galaxies.

We use Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) Integral Field Unit (IFU) observations of a sample of 5 bright nearby Seyfert galaxies to map their emission-line flux distributions and kinematics at a spatial resolution ranging from 110 to 280 pc. For all galaxies, the gas kinematics show two components: a rotation and an outflow component.

Sunspots are the most prominent feature of the solar magnetism in the photosphere. Although they have been widely investigated in the past, their structure remains poorly understood. Indeed, due to limitations in observations and the complexity of the magnetic field estimation at chromospheric heights, the magnetic field structure of sunspot above the photosphere is still uncertain. Improving the present knowledge of sunspot is important in solar and stellar physics, since spot generation is seen not only on the Sun, but also on other solar-type stars. In this regard, we studied a large, isolated sunspot with spectro-polarimeteric measurements that were acquired at the Fe I 6173 nm and Ca II 8542 nm lines by the spectropolarimeter IBIS/DST under excellent seeing conditions lasting more than three hours. Using the Non-LTE inversion code NICOLE, we inverted both line measurements simultaneously, to retrieve the three-dimensional magnetic and thermal structure of the penumbral region from the bottom of the photosphere to the middle chromosphere. Our analysis of data acquired at spectral ranges unexplored in previous studies shows clear spine and intra-spine structure of the penumbral magnetic field at chromopheric heights. Our investigation of the magnetic field gradient in the penumbra along the vertical and azimuthal directions confirms results reported in the literature from analysis of data taken at the spectral region of the He I 1083 nm triplet.

This work aims to explore the different processes of formation and evolution of dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group analyzing internal and external feedbacks, taking Leo II as a model of parametrization due to its adequate large distance to the Milky Way, in order to minimize potential external effects. We present a discussion of the first results regarding the processes of formation and galactic evolution from the gas hydrodynamics. Combined with previous studies for other similar systems, such results have the potential to establish strong links for the elaboration of a consistent and coherent scenario of formation and evolution of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group.

As we enter the era of JWST our need to characterise the rest-frame UV spectra of star-forming galaxies becomes essential. By combining the NIR capabilities of JWST with our understanding of UV wavelength science, we have the opportunity to explore fundamental properties of the gas, such as its metallicity and density, as well as the extent, velocity, and magnitude of their outflowing gas, in galaxies out to z ∼ 6. Galaxy outflows in particular play a fundamental role in the evolution of young galaxies at high redshifts, but their properties remain largely unknown as it is difficult to spatially resolve the outflowing gas. To-date, only two attempts to resolve outflows at redshift ∼ 2 have been made using lensing magnification, producing contradictory results on the origin of the outflows. In this talk I will present results from one such groundbreaking study where we combine gravitational lensing with VLT-MUSE to perform one of the first spatially resolved absorption line studies of a galaxy at z = 2 – 3. I will discuss how the the distinct kinematical structure and uniform column densities obtained from the outflowing gas maps reveal ‘global’ rather than ‘locally’ sourced outflows. I will also present preliminary results from our latest attempt to accurately constrain the structure and source of outflows in star-forming galaxies by observing the brightest galaxy-scale lens known with KCWI. I will conclude with the benefits and limitations of spatially resolved observations in this wavelength range, and possible implications on NIRSpec observations of the high-z Universe.

A filament eruption may lead to a coronal mass ejection (CME), which is one of the main driving mechanisms of space weather. This work analyses a slow and flareless CME event associated with an erupting quiescent filament. By using the extreme ultraviolet images of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we trace the evolution of the filament in detail, and present the manifestations of the role of magnetic fields in the low corona. The results suggest the existence of a magnetic flux rope in the pre-eruption structures. Our study of this complex magnetic system may lead to a better understanding of CMEs and their impact on the space weather.

The report shows the current opportunities for obtaining astronomical knowledge in school and outside it, through the use of non-formal education. These are school and extracurricular activities, schools, astronomical competitions and Olympiads, observation expeditions. For 25 years Bulgaria has been participating in the International Olympiads in Astronomy and Astronomy and Astrophysics with National Teams. The role and place of the system of Public Astronomical Observatories and Planetaria in the system of non-formal education in astronomy are discussed (In Bulgaria there are 7 Public astronomical observatories with a planetarium). Specialized activities in their school forms allow the formation of sustainable astronomical knowledge and observational habits.

We calculate the spectral energy distribution of the first galaxies which contain pre-main-sequence stars by using the stellar evolution code Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics, the spectra model BT-Settl, and the stellar population synthesis code PEGASE. We calculate the galaxy spectral energy distribution for Salpeter Initial Mass Function. We find that very young first galaxies are bright also in mid-infrared, and the contribution of pre-main-sequence stars can be significant over 0.1 Myr after a star-formation episode.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and their derivatives, including protonated and cationic species, are suspected to be carriers of the unidentified infrared (UIR) emission bands observed from the galactic and extragalactic sources. We investigated the infrared (IR) spectra of protonated nonplanar PAHs: corannulene (C20H10) and sumanene (C21H12), that are regarded as a fragments of a fullerene,C60. The protonated corannulene H+ C20H10 and sumanene H+ C21H12 were produced in seperate experiments by bombarding a mixture of corannulene/sumanene and para-hydrogen (p-H2) with electrons during deposition at 3.2 K. During maintenance of the electron-bombarded matrix in darkness the intensities of IR lines of protonated corannulene decreased because of neutralization by electrons that were slowly released from the trapped sites whereas the hydrogenated species were produced. The observed lines were classified into several groups according to their responses to darkness and secondary irradiation at 365 nm/385 nm LEDs. Spectral assignments were derived based on a comparison of the observed spectra with those predicted with the B3PW91/6-311+ +G(2d,2p) method. The observed IR spectrum of hub-H+ C20H10, the most stable protonated isomer, resembles several bands of the Class-A UIR bands.

In April 2017 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has delivered first resolved images of a shadow of a supermassive black hole. Apart from black hole sources in M87 and in the Galactic Center, observed with resolution comparable to the Schwarzschild radius scale, EHT observed multiple AGN sources during the 2017 campaign. These include 3C279, Centaurus A, OJ287 and more. For most of the considered sources EHT 2017 data set should allow to reconstruct images with highest angular resolution in the history of their observations, approaching 20 uas. While the analysis of these data is still ongoing, I will talk about the scientific opportunities related to observing AGN sources with the extreme resolution of the EHT as well as about the astrophysical questions that these observations may help answering.

I review the current understanding of some key properties of the earliest growing supermassive black holes (SMBHs), as determined from the most up-to-date observations of z ≲ 5 quasars. This includes their accretion rates and growth history, their host galaxies, and the large-scale environments that enabled their emergence less than a billion years after the Big Bang. The available multi-wavelength data show that these SMBHs are consistent with Eddington-limited, radiatively efficient accretion that had to proceed almost continuously since very early epochs. ALMA observations of the hosts’ ISM reveal gas-rich, well developed galaxies, with a wide range of SFRs that may exceed ∼1000 Mȯyr−1. Moreover, ALMA uncovers a high fraction of companion, interacting galaxies, separated by < 100 kpc (projected). This supports the idea that the first generation of high-mass, luminous SMBHs grew in over-dense environments, and that major mergers may be important drivers for rapid SMBH and host galaxy growth. Current X-ray surveys cannot access the lower-mass, supposedly more abundant counterparts of these rare z ≳ 5 massive quasars, which should be able to elucidate the earliest stages of BH formation and growth. Such lower-mass nuclear BHs will be the prime targets of the deepest surveys planned for the next generation of facilities, such as the upcoming Athena mission and the future Lynx mission concept.

The gas evolution of a typical Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy is investigated by means of 3D hydrodynamic simulations, taking into account the feedback of type II and Ia supernovae, the outflow of an Intermediate Massive Black Hole (IMBH) and a static cored dark matter potential. When the IMBH’s outflow is simulated in an homogeneous medium a jet structure is created and a small fraction of the gas is pushed away from the galaxy. No jet structure can be seen, however, when the medium is disturbed by supernovae, but gas is still pushed away. In this case, the main driver of the gas removal are the supernovae. The interplay between the stellar feedback and the IMBH’s outflow should be taken into account.

While gas-phase reactions and surface reactions on bare carbonaceous or siliceous dust grains contribute to cosmic chemistry, the energetic processing of cosmic ices via photochemistry and radiation chemistry is thought to be the dominant mechanism for the cosmic synthesis of prebiotic molecules. Because most previous laboratory astrochemical studies have used light sources that produce >10 eV photons and are, therefore, capable of ionizing cosmic ice analogs, discerning the role of photochemistry vs. radiation chemistry in astrochemistry is challenging. By using a source whose photon energy does not exceed 8 eV, we have studied ammonia and methanol cosmic ice reactions attributable solely to photochemistry. We compare these results to those obtained in the same ultrahigh vacuum chamber with 1 keV electrons which instead initiate radiation chemistry in cosmic ice analogs.

An active region filament in the upper chromosphere is studied using spectropolarimetric data in He i 10830 Å from the GREGOR telescope. A Milne-Eddingon based inversion of the Unno-Rachkovsky equations is used to retrieve the velocity and the magnetic field vector of the region. The plasma velocity reaches supersonic values closer to the feet of the filament barbs and coexist with a slow velocity component. Such supersonic velocities result from the acceleration of the plasma as it drains from the filament spine through the barbs. The line-of-sight magnetic fields have strengths below 200 G in the filament spine and in the filament barbs where fast downflows are located, their strengths range between 100 - 700 G.

Thanks to the remarkable ALMA capabilities and the unique configuration of the Cosmic Snake galaxy behind a massive galaxy cluster, we could resolve molecular clouds down to 30 pc linear physical scales in a typical Milky Way progenitor at z = 1.036, through CO(4–3) observations performed at the ∼ 0.2″ angular resolution. We identified 17 individual giant molecular clouds. These high-redshift molecular clouds are clearly different from their local analogues, with 10–100 times higher masses, densities, and internal turbulence. They are offset from the Larson scaling relations. We argue that the molecular cloud physical properties are dependent on the ambient interstellar conditions particular to the host galaxy. We find these high-redshift clouds in virial equilibrium, and derive, for the first time, the CO-to-H2 conversion factor from the kinematics of independent molecular clouds at z = 1. The measured large clouds gas masses demonstrate the existence of parent gas clouds with masses high enough to allow the in-situ formation of similarly massive stellar clumps seen in the Cosmic Snake galaxy in comparable numbers. Our results support the formation of molecular clouds by fragmentation of turbulent galactic gas disks, which then become the stellar clumps observed in distant galaxies.

We present results of our zoom-in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of direct collapse (DC) to supermassive black hole (SMBH) seeds with radiative transfer (RT). The DC has been modeled in dark matter halos of ∼108M⊙, using adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) code Enzo. For the first time, the baryonic collapse has been followed down to 10−7 pc (∼0.01 AU) with on-the-fly RT and the flux-limited diffusion (FLD) approximation. We find a complex behavior involving accretion flow and associated outflows driven by the radiation force. The resulting gas dynamics around the central density peak differs profoundly from that in previous works which adopted adiabatic approximation in the core. The core forms with a photosphere at ∼1 AU, and its growth starts to saturate at ∼100M⊙. The unrelaxed core radiates intermittently near the Eddington luminosity, correlated with strong anisotropic outflows.
