The development of tunable dye lasers and a simple atomic and ionic beam source for all elements were critical in establishing a reliable absolute scale for atomic transition probabilities in the optical to near UV regions. The laboratory astrophysics program at the University of Wisconsin - Madison (UW) concentrates on neutral and singly-ionized species transitions that are observable in astronomical spectra of cool stars, emphasizing the rare earth n(eutron)-capture elements and the Fe-group elements that are important inputs to early Galactic nucleosynthesis studies. The UW program is one of several productive efforts on atomic transition probabilities. These programs generally use time-resolved laser-induced-fluorescence (TR-LIF) to accurately measure total decay rates and data from high resolution Fourier transform spectrometers (FTSs) to determine emission branching fractions (BFs). The UW laboratory results almost always are directly linked to astronomical chemical composition efforts. There are good opportunities to extend similar research to other wavelength regions.

In this talk I will show that multi-wavelength observations can provide novel constraints on the properties of ionized gas outflows in AGN. I will present evidence that the infrared emission in active galaxies includes a contribution from dust which is mixed with the outflow and is heated by the AGN. We detect this infrared component in thousands of AGN for the first time, and use it to constrain the outflow location. By combining this with optical emission lines, we constrain the mass outflow rates and energetics in a sample of 234 type II AGN, the largest such sample to date. The key ingredient of our new outflow measurements is a novel method to estimate the electron density using the ionization parameter and location of the flow. The inferred electron densities, ∼104.5 cm−3, are two orders of magnitude larger than found in most other cases of ionized outflows. We argue that the discrepancy is due to the fact that the commonly-used [SII]-based method underestimates the true density by a large factor. As a result, the inferred mass outflow rates and kinetic coupling efficiencies are 1–2 orders of magnitude lower than previous estimates, and 3–4 orders of magnitude lower than the typical requirement in hydrodynamic cosmological simulations. These results have significant implications for the relative importance of ionized outflows feedback in this population.

Understanding active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback is essential for building a coherent picture of the evolution of the super massive black hole and its host galaxy. To that end we have analysed the inner kiloparsec of a sample of 30 local AGN with spatially resolved optical spectroscopy. In this talk I will review the analysis of the ionised gas for the galaxies in our sample, including kinematical maps, emission line ratios and fluxes. The W80 kinematical index is used to trace outflows, and also to provide an estimate for the outflowing velocity. Electron densities, derived from the [S II] ΛΛ6716, 6731Å lines, along with Hα luminosities and the sizes of the outflowing regions are employed in estimates of the outflowing gas mass. We find a median mass outflow rate of Ṁ = 0.3 M⊙ yr-1 and median outflow power of log [P/(erg s-1)] = 40.4.

Numerical simulations of disk galaxies with steady (long-lived) and dynamic (short-lived) spiral arms suggest that offsets between stellar and gas spiral arms depend on their nature or lifetime (Baba et al.2015). Based on this theoretical study, we investigated gas-star offsets in the nearby grand-design spiral galaxy M51, and found that its two spiral arms exhibit different offset dependences against radius. One arm is consistent with a steady arm, while the other is consistent with a dynamic arm. We deduce that this difference is likely due to a tidal interaction with the companion galaxy (Egusa et al.2017). For this study, a stellar mass distribution with a high accuracy at a high spatial resolution is essential, which has come to be available by applying recent SED fitting techniques to multi-wavelength images. We are now working to extend this study to other nearby spiral galaxies.

Jellyfish are the most extreme cases of galaxies undergoing ram-pressure stripping. In order to analyse the stellar populations distribution along these galaxies, we have performed stellar population synthesis in data cubes of jellyfish from the GASP programme, using both Starlight and FADO codes.

The presence of a super massive BH in almost all galaxies in the Universe is an accepted paradigm in astronomy. How these BHs form and how they co-evolve with the host galaxy is one of the most intriguing unanswered problems in modern Cosmology and of extreme relevance to understand the issue of galaxy formation. Clustering measurements can powerfully test theoretical model predictions of BH triggering scenarios and put constraints on the typical environment where AGN live in, through the connection with their host dark matter halos. In this talk, I will present some recent results on the AGN clustering dependence on host galaxy properties, such as galaxy stellar mass, star formation rate and specific BH accretion rate, based on X-ray selected Chandra COSMOS Legacy Type 2 AGN. We found no significant AGN clustering dependence on galaxy stellar mass and specif BHAR for Type 2 COSMOS AGN at mean z ∼ 1.1, with a stellar - halo mass relation flatter than predicted for non active galaxies in the Mstar range probed by our sample. We also observed a negative clustering dependence on SFR, with AGN hosting halo mass increasing with decreasing SFR. Mock catalogs of active galaxies in hosting dark matter halos with logMh[Msun] > 12.5, matched to have the same X-ray luminosity, stellar mass and BHAR of COSMOS AGN predict the observed Mstar - Mh, BHAR - Mh and SFR-Mh relations, at z ∼ 1.

Determining the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and whether it is constant or varies in space and time is the Holy Grail of modern astrophysics, with profound implications for all theories of star and galaxy formation. On a theoretical ground, the extreme conditions for star formation (SF) encountered in the most powerful starbursts in the Universe are expected to favour the formation of massive stars. Direct methods of IMF determination, however, cannot probe such systems, because of the severe dust obscuration affecting their starlight. The next best option is to observe CNO bearing molecules in the interstellar medium at millimetre/ submillimetre wavelengths, which, in principle, provides the best indirect evidence for IMF variations. In this contribution, we present our recent findings on this issue. First, we reassess the roles of different types of stars in the production of CNO isotopes. Then, we calibrate a proprietary chemical evolution code using Milky Way data from the literature, and extend it to discuss extragalactic data. We show that, though significant uncertainties still hamper our knowledge of the evolution of CNO isotopes in galaxies, compelling evidence for an IMF skewed towards high-mass stars can be found for galaxy-wide starbursts. In particular, we analyse a sample of submillimetre galaxies observed by us with the Atacama Large Millimetre Array at the peak of the SF activity of the Universe, for which we measure 13C/18O⋍1. This isotope ratio is especially sensitive to IMF variations, and is little affected by observational uncertainties. At the end, ongoing developments of our work are briefly outlined.

The massive galaxies and their central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) co-evolution scenario proposes that a gas-rich major merger can trigger the central starburst and feeding the SMBH accretion, and then star formation is eventually quenched by quasar feedback. In this evolutionary sequence, dust-obscured quasars may represent the critical transition phase between starburst and unobscured quasars. Modeling the panchromatic emission of these hidden monsters provides a unique way to explore their physical properties and therefore the co-evolution between SMBHs and their hosts. However, most of modelling methods are not suitable for the extremely luminous systems with obscured Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) emission. Here we present two case studies of panchromatic modeling of the extremely luminous dust-obscured quasars at the cosmic noon.

Supernovae provide environments with strong links to laboratory astrophysics. Diverse physical processes spanning from hot gas and semi-relativistic particles down to cold dusty clumps require extensive atomic data and understanding of processes across different physical regimes. The current status of modelling and analyzing supernova spectra is reviewed, with focus on recent results for diagnosing the production of oxygen and nickel.

The stellar magnetic field completely dominates the environment around late-type stars. It is responsible for driving the coronal high-energy radiation (e.g. EUV/X-rays), the development of stellar winds, and the generation transient events such as flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). While progress has been made for the first two processes, our understanding of the eruptive behavior in late-type stars is still very limited. One example of this is the fact that despite the frequent and highly energetic flaring observed in active stars, direct evidence for stellar CMEs is almost non-existent. Here we discuss realistic 3D simulations of stellar CMEs, analyzing their resulting properties in contrast with solar eruptions, and use them to provide a common framework to interpret the available stellar observations. Additionally, we present results from the first 3D CME simulations in M-dwarf stars, with emphasis on possible observable signatures imprinted in the stellar corona.

Our ancestors contemplated an inspiring night sky of science, philosophy, art … today, it is estimated that one third of the world’s population have never seen the Milky Way. The progressive degradation of the quality of the night sky due to an inappropriate use of the artificial light at night, as well to other sources of sky pollution, must be considered as the fundamental loss of a scientific, cultural and environmental heritage of humanity.

In this public talk we summarized the most relevant aspects of light pollution, the reasons for promoting good lighting to protect dark skies, and some of the initiatives at a global level that are being developed to preserve the darkness of the night sky.

Our view of the properties of extragalactic radio jets and the impact they have on the host galaxy has expanded in the recent years. This has been possible thanks to the data from new or upgraded radio telescopes. This review briefly summarises the current status of the field and describes some of the exciting recent results and the surprises they have brought. In particular, the physical properties of radio jets as function of their radio power will be discussed together with the advance made in understanding the life-cycle of radio sources. The evolutionary stage (e.g. newly born, dying, restarted) of the radio AGN can be derived from their morphology and properties of the radio spectra. The possibilities offered by the new generation of low-frequency radio telescopes make it possible to derive (at least to first order) the time-scale spent in each phase. The presence of a cycle of activity ensures a recurrent impact of the radio jets on their surrounding inter-stellar and inter-galactic medium and, therefore, their relevance for AGN feedback. The last part is dedicated to the recent results showing the effect of jets on the surrounding galactic medium. The predictions made by numerical simulations on the impact of a radio jet (and in particular a newly born jet) on a clumpy medium describe well what is seen by the observations. The high resolution studies of jet-driven outflows of cold gas (and molecular) has provided new important addition both in term of quantifying the impact of the outflows and their relevance for feedback as well as for providing an unexpected view of the physical conditions of the gas under these extreme conditions.

The ALMA twenty-six arcmin2 survey of GOODS-S at one millimeter (ASAGAO) is a deep (1σ ∼ 61μJy/beam) and wide area (26 arcmin2) survey on a contiguous field at 1.2 mm. By combining with archival data, we obtained a deeper map in the same region (1σ ∼ 30μJy/beam−1, synthesized beam size 0.59″ × 0.53″), providing the largest sample of sources (25 sources at 5σ, 45 sources at 4.5σ) among ALMA blank-field surveys. The median redshift of the 4.5σ sources is 2.4. The number counts shows that 52% of the extragalactic background light at 1.2 mm is resolved into discrete sources. We create IR luminosity functions (LFs) at z = 1–3, and constrain the faintest luminosity of the LF at 2 < z < 3. The LFs are consistent with previous results based on other ALMA and SCUBA-2 observations, which suggests a positive luminosity evolution and negative density evolution.

Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are extremely low luminosity galaxies and some of them seem to have a lack of dark matter. Therefore, they can offer important clues to better understand galaxy formation and evolution. Little is known about UDGs in less dense environments, as most of the known UDGs have been found in very dense regions, in the outskirts of massive galaxies in galaxy clusters. In this work, we present the properties of UDGs candidates identified through visual inspection around the low-density environment of NGC 3115, the closest S0 galaxy from the Milky Way. We have measured the structural parameters of 41 UDGs candidates using images obtained with the Dark Energy Camera at the Blanco Telescope. Such structural parameters will be used to characterise and select the best UDG candidates, that will have their properties traced for future follow-up campaigns.

Underground Nuclear Astrophysics in China (JUNA) will take the advantage of the ultra-low background in Jinping underground lab. High current accelerator with an ECR source and detectors were commissioned. JUNA plans to study directly a number of nuclear reactions important to hydrostatic stellar evolution at their relevant stellar energies. At the first period, JUNA aims at the direct measurements of 25Mg(p,γ)26 Al, 19F(p,α) 16 O, 13C(α, n) 16O and 12C(α,γ) 16O near the Gamow window. The current progress of JUNA will be given.

Spectral line intensities observed by the Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) during 2012 March 9 M6.3 flare were used to diagnose a presence of a non-thermal electron distribution represented by a κ-distribution. The diagnosed electron densities ($\approx 2 \times {10^{11}}{\rm{c}}{{\rm{m}}^{ - 3}}$) are affected only a little by the presence of the non-thermal distribution, and are within the uncertainties of observation. On the other hand, the temperature diagnostics based on the line ratios involving different ionization degrees is strongly affected by the type of the electron distribution. The distribution functions diagnosed from relative Fe line intensities demonstrate the presence of strongly non-thermal distributions during the impulsive phase of the flare and later their gradual thermalization.

Of all the questions that Man asks himself about the Universe, the one concerning the possibility of the existence of an extra-terrestrial life form, and even more of an extra-terrestrial civilization, is probably the most fascinating. We cannot answer it today, but we can imagine the implications for the human species and its future in the Universe.

In this study, we show that the characteristic radius rs, mass Ms, and the X-ray temperature, TX, of galaxy clusters form a thin plane in the space of (log rs, log Ms, log TX). This tight correlation indicates that the cluster structure including the temperature is affected by the formation time of individual clusters. Numerical simulations show that clusters move along the fundamental plane as they evolve. The plane and the cluster evolution within the plane can be explained by a similarity solution of structure formation. The angle of the plane shows that clusters have not achieved “virial equilibrium”. The details of this study are written in Fujita et al. (2018a,b).

General Relativity has been successfully tested on small scales. However, precise tests on galactic and larger scales have only recently begun. Moreover, the majority of these tests on large scales are based on the measurements of Hubble constant (H0), which is currently under discussion. Collett et al. (2018) implemented a novel test combining lensing and dynamical mass measurements of a galaxy, which are connected by a γ parameter, and found γ=0.97±0.09, which is consistent with unity, as predicted by GR. We are carrying out this same technique with a second galaxy, SDP.81 at z=0.299, and present here our preliminary results.

The development of astronomy has been developed by the cooperation of amateur astronomers and researchers. Sunspot observation is a good example of Extreme citizen science in early days. Issei YAMAMOTO (1889–1959), organized “Oriental Astronomical Association (OAA),” Yamamoto’s materials (now in Kwasan observatory) include solar observation data sent from many observers in Japan. From the viewpoint of today’s Citizen Science, collaborative observation of sunspot between researchers of solar physics and amateur astronomers in Japan has clearly a context of social mission rather than mere academic interest. From the viewpoint of science communication, we can see that Yamamoto’s call includes a social mission to promote astronomy in Japan, and that amateurs responded to Yamamoto’s call by participating in the observation network. It can be said that this collaboration have not only “cultural” aspect but also “civic”or “practical” aspect.
