We searched for associations (not for families) amongst the near Earth asteroids (NEAs) and, similarly as in our previous studies (Jopek 2011; Jopek 2015),AQ: Please provide reference detail for Jopek 2012. a dozen groups of 10 or more members was found with high statistical reliability. We present some details of our most numerous finding: association (2061) Anza which, at the moment, incorporates 191 members.

The Fornax Deep Survey (FDS) is a multi-band imaging survey of the Fornax cluster of galaxies, executed with the ESO VLT Survey Telescope (VST). The survey is designed to reach unprecedented surface brightness and point-source magnitude depth over one virial radius of the cluster. The scientific objectives of the survey are numerous: the study of the galaxy luminosity function, derivation of galaxy scaling relations, determination of the properties of compact stellar systems, an accurate determination of distances and 3-D geometry of the Fornax cluster, analysis of diffuse stellar light and galaxy interactions, etc.

In this contribute we give an overview on the interest of the survey on globular clusters (GC) populations, and present a report the status of the study of GCs also providing some preliminary results of our analysis, with particular regard to the two-dimensional distribution of GC candidates over ∼20 sq. degree area of Fornax centered on NGC 1399.

Using abundances from the available largest, homogeneous sample of high resolution Barium (Ba) star spectra we calculated the ratios of different hs-like to ls-like elemental ratios and compared to different AGB nucleosynthesis models. The Ba star data show an incontestable increase of the hs-type/ls-type element ratio (for example, [Ce/Y]) with decreasing metallicity. This trend in the Ba star observations is predicted by low mass, non-rotating AGB models where 13C is the main neutron source and is in agreement with Kepler asteroseismology observations.

In order to study the most reddened areas of the Milky Way we used near-IR data from the VVV Survey. For the first time, the VISTA telescope allows us to observe the mid-plane through the Galactic bulge and study the disk in the other side of the Milky Way. Motivated by the detection of hundreds of microlensing events in the inner regions of the Galaxy, we propose three new configurations of microlensing events, placing the sources in the far-disk and the lenses in the far-disk/bulge/near-disk. These new configurations will change the usual way to interpret the timescale distributions due to the different populations along the line of sight, that exhibit varied transverse velocities and relative distances.

The relative abundances of the radionuclides in the solar system at the time of its birth are crucial arbiters for competing hypotheses regarding the birth environment of the Sun. The presence of short-lived radionuclides, as evidenced by their decay products in meteorites, has been used to suggest that particular, sometimes exotic, stellar sources were proximal to the Sun’s birth environment. The recent confirmation of neutron star - neutron star (NS-NS) mergers and associated kilonovae as potentially dominant sources of r-process nuclides can be tested in the case of the solar birth environment using the relative abundances of the longer-lived nuclides. Critical analysis of the 15 radionuclides and their stable partners for which abundances and production ratios are well known suggests that the Sun formed in a typical massive star-forming region (SFR). The apparent overabundances of short-lived radionuclides (e.g. 26Al, 41Ca, 36Cl) in the early solar system appears to be an artifact of a heretofore under-appreciation for the important influences of enrichment by Wolf-Rayet winds in SFRs. The long-lived nuclides (e.g. 238U, 244Pu, 247Cr, 129I) are consistent with an average time interval between production events of 108 years, seemingly too short to be the products of NS-NS mergers alone. The relative abundances of all of these nuclides can be explained by their mean decay lifetimes and an average residence time in the ISM of ∼200 Myr. This residence time evidenced by the radionuclides is consistent with the average lifetime of dust in the ISM and the timescale for converting molecular cloud mass to stars.

We propose that a significant fraction of the wide massive binaries in the field are formed as a result of the disintegration of multiple systems of trapezium type. As examples we discuss here the binaries formed from the evolution of the mini-cluster associated with the B component of the Orion Trapezium, from that of the Orion Trapezium itself, and from 10 additional massive trapezia for which we found reliable data in the literature.

We use a matched filter to detect compact groups of old, metal-poor stars that we term FOSSILs (Fragments of Old Stellar Systems in Limbo). With size scales on the order of 10 arcminutes, distances ranging from 2 to 200 kpc, and memberships ranging from a handful to several dozen stars, these FOSSILs stand out from the surrounding field and are presumably signatures of, or debris from, ancient star clusters and dwarf galaxies. They may be localized concentrations of stars within more extensive tidal streams, and in some cases may be the signatures of extant but heretofore undetected ultrafaint galaxies. Using magnitudes and colors from the Pan-STARRs survey, we detect ∼ 70 such FOSSILs at 5 σ or greater in a 2200 square degree region in the vicinity of the north Galactic pole. A subsample of more populous FOSSILs that could be candidate ultrafaint dwarf galaxies suggests a total population of 200 such objects within 200 kpc of the Galactic center. Spectroscopic and astrometric follow-up of these FOSSILs will be required to determine the nature of these structures, deepen our understanding of the make-up and accretion history of the Galactic halo, and perhaps alleviate the missing satellites problem.

Relativistic jets are one of the most powerful manifestations of the release of energy produced around supermassive black holes at the centre of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Their emission is observed across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, from the radio band to gamma rays. Despite decades of efforts, many aspects of the physics of relativistic jets remain elusive. In particular, the location and the mechanisms responsible for the high-energy emission and the connection of the variability at different wavelengths are among the greatest challenges in the study of AGN. Recent high resolution radio observations of flaring objects locate the high energy emitting region downstream the jet at parsec scale distance from the central engine. Furthermore, monitoring campaigns of the most active blazars indicate that not all the high energy flares have the same characteristics in the various energy bands, even from the same source, making the interpretation of the mechanism responsible for the high-energy emission not trivial. Here I will discuss gamma-ray properties of blazars obtained by Fermi Large Area Telescope observations and the connection between radio and high-energy emission in relativistic jets, and I will focus on the importance of high angular resolution observations.

We present new results on the Galactic bar/bulge transverse velocity structure using Gaia and the VISTA Variables in Via Lactea (VVV) survey. Gaia is complemented in high extinction regions by the multi-epoch infrared VVV observations for which derived relative proper motions can be tied to Gaia’s absolute frame. We extract kinematic maps (both 2D and 3D) of the Galactic bar/bulge, from which we measure the pattern speed of the bar using a novel technique. We focus on the evidence of an X-shaped bulge from the kinematic maps.

Based on hydrostatic models we discuss the effects of molecular opacities and abundance changes concerning C, N or O on the atmospheric structures, spectra and photometric properties of C/M AGB giants.

A constraint on Solar System formation is the high 26Al/27Al abundance ratio, 17 times higher than the average Galactic ratio, while the 60Fe/56Fe value was lower than the Galactic value. This challenges the assumption that a nearby supernova was responsible for the injection of these short-lived radionuclides into the early Solar System. We suggest that the Solar System was formed by triggered star formation at the edge of a Wolf-Rayet (W-R) bubble. We discuss the details of various processes within the model using numerical simulations, and analytic and semi-analytic calculations, and conclude that it is a viable model that can explain the initial abundances of 26Al and 60Fe. We estimate that 1%-16% of all Sun-like stars could have formed in such a setting.

Determining the star formation history (SFH) is key to understand the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies. Recovering the SFH in resolved galaxies is mostly based on deep colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs), which trace the signatures of multiple evolutionary stages of their stellar populations. In distant and unresolved galaxies, the integrated light of the galaxy can be decomposed, albeit made difficult by an age–metallicity degeneracy. Another solution to determine the SFH of resolved galaxies is based on evolved stars; these luminous stars are the most accessible tracers of the underlying stellar populations and can trace the entire SFH. Here we present a novel method based on long period variable (LPV) evolved asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs). We applied this method to reconstruct the SFH for IC1613, an irregular dwarf galaxy at a distance of 750 kpc. Our results provide an independent confirmation that no major episode of star formation occurred in IC1613 over the past 5 Gyr.

Orbits of potential Trojans of different planets in the solar system were selected from the MPC catalog on February, 2017. The evolution of those orbits was calculated. The bodies on librating orbits around the points L4 and L5 were determined. The quantities of real Trojans in the MPC catalog are as follows: Mars - 5, Jupiter - over 4500, Saturn - none, Uranus - 2, Neptune - 15. A reasoned explanation of such distribution of Trojans in the solar system is proposed.

A popular approach to model galaxies is Schwarzschild’s method. For this method, a grid of sample orbits of stars in an external potential is calculated, and a model for the stellar system is obtained through attributing specific weights to the orbits in a superposition of them. The models created with Schwarzschild’s method can fit many observed properties of the modeled stellar system with high precision. However, systems that are stationary as Schwarzschild models may therefore exhibit a strong time evolution if they are translated into more realistic self-gravitating models. The issue is highlighted with the Galactic center as an example.

NGC 1275 is one of the best targets to study the high energy emission mechanism in radio galaxies and the accretion flow properties using a young re-started jet 3C 84 as a prober of subpc-to-pc scale environment. In this proceeding, we review the observation results from a series of our VLBI observations and discuss on the origin of gamma-ray emission and accretion flow properties. We also briefly present the preliminary results from our recent ALMA observations.

Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are stripped stellar cores that form through strong stellar wind or binary mass transfer. It is proposed that binary evolution plays a vital role in the formation of WR stars in low metallicity environments due to the metallicity dependance of stellar winds. However observations indicate a similar binary fraction of WR stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) compared to the Milky Way. There are twelve WR stars in the SMC and five of them are members of binary systems. One of them (SMC AB8) harbors a WO type star. In this work we explore possible formation channels of this binary. We use the MESA code to compute large grids of binary evolution models, and then use least square fitting to compare our models with the observations. In order to reproduce the key properties of SMC AB8, we require efficient semiconvection to produce a sufficiently large convective core, as well as a longer He-burning lifetime. We also need a high mass loss rate during the WN stage to assist the removal of the outer envelope. In this way, we can reproduce the observed properties of AB8, except for the surface carbon to oxygen ratio, which requires further investigation.

This paper presented very early, high-cadence photometric observations of the nearby Type Ia SN 2017cbv. The light-curve is unique in that during the first five days of observations it has a blue bump in the U, B, and g bands which is clearly resolved by virtue of our photometric cadence of 5.7 hr during that time span. We modelled the light-curve as the combination of an early shock of the supernova ejecta against a non-degenerate companion star plus a standard Type Ia supernova component. Our best-fit model suggested the presence of a subgiant star 56 R⊙ from the exploding white dwarf, although that number is highly model-dependent. While the model matches the optical light-curve well, it over-predicts the flux expected in the ultraviolet bands. That may indicate that the shock is not a blackbody, perhaps because of line blanketing in the UV. Alternatively, it could point to another physical explanation for the optical blue bump, such as interaction with circumstellar material or an unusual distribution of the element Ni. Early optical spectra of SN 2017cbv show strong carbon absorption as far as day –13 with respect to maximum light, suggesting that the progenitor system contained a significant amount of unburnt material. These results for SN 2017cbv illustrate the power of early discovery and intense follow-up of nearby supernovæ for resolving standing questions about the progenitor systems and explosion mechanisms of Type Ia supernovæ.

The BAaDE (Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution) project is an SiO maser survey of the Galactic Plane. About 19,000 sources have been observed at 43 GHz with the VLA, and the production of spectra for each of these sources is well underway. The primary goal of the project is to collect line-of-sight velocities for all the detected masers in the sample to probe Galactic dynamics. With an expected detection rate of over 60% we should collect over 11,000 velocities to probe the Galactic potential. The survey is also a large sample of infrared sources to explore the different evolved stellar populations within the Milky Way. So far we discern three distinct groups in the BAaDE sample: the main group containing oxygen-rich, evolved stars with a high SiO maser detection rate, a much smaller population of carbon-rich evolved stars, and finally a group of likely young stellar objects with no maser emission. These populations are separated using 2MASS and MSX color-color diagrams, and we find a particularly useful cut between the young and evolved objects using the MSX [D] –[E] color. Identification of these populations will isolate BAaDE’s evolved star sample, and will more tightly define the region in IR color-color diagrams where SiO masers occur yielding a better understanding of these kinematical probes. Using our color-divisions we can also study the distribution of each of the populations within the Galactic Plane.

The Solo (Solitary local) Dwarf Galaxy Survey is a volume limited sample of all nearby (< 3 Mpc) and isolated (> 300 kpc from the Milky Way or M31) dwarfs, with wide-field g and i imaging. This survey uses resolved stellar populations to parameterize these low mass systems. Comparison to the well studied satellite dwarfs characterizes the evolutionary impact of a large galaxy in close proximity. The deep, wide field nature of this survey also lends itself to searching for nearby substructures, both globular clusters and possible faint satellites.

Current work is focused on the 16 closest Solo dwarfs, all within the virial radius (approximately 1 Mpc) of the Local Group. This subset has been characterized using consistent methods, despite their diversity in stellar mass and apparent size. The analysis highlights the extended stellar structure and morphology. We will examine trends with star formation history, and separation from a large host. This first subset emphasizes the survey’s unique challenges and advantages.

The Solo Survey provides detailed look at the extended structure of dwarfs and characterizes the evolution of galaxies in the faint limit.

The international collaboration of VLBI in East Asia (EA) is rapidly growing. Besides the recent successful operation of the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA), the effort of joint VLBI operation in EA is being expanded into China. This forms the East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN), which offers detailed imaging and monitoring of the innermost regions of relativistic jets at cm wavelengths and thus complementary to the Event Horizon Telescope operated at mm wavelengths. In this contribution we present some of the ongoing KaVA/EAVN studies for the inner jets of the two important nearby radio galaxies 3C84 and M87. The observations have revealed detailed kinematics for the parsec-to-subparsec-scale structures of these jets. Future regular observations with the East-Asia-To-Italy-Nearly-Global (EATING) VLBI, a joint effort between EAVN and the Italian VLBI Network, will enable us to resolve and regularly monitor the innermost regions of nearby AGN jets at tens of micro-arcsecond scales.
