Many recent integral field spectroscopy (IFS) survey teams have used stellar kinematic maps combined with imaging to statistically infer the underlying distributions of galaxy intrinsic shapes. With now several IFS samples at our disposal, the method, which was originally proposed by M. Franx and collaborators in 1991, is gaining in popularity, having been so far applied to ATLAS3D, SAMI, MANGA and MASSIVE. We present results showing that a commonly assumed relationship between dynamical and intrinsic shape alignment does not hold in Illustris, affecting our ability to recover accurate intrinsic shape distributions. A further implication is that so-called “prolate rotation”, where the bulk of stars in prolate galaxies are thought to rotate around the projected major axis, is a misnomer.

I present the latest results from our group about the multiple stellar populations in the old Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) and in the young systems both in the Magellanic Clouds and in the Milky Way. For the ancient GCs in our Galaxy I summarize the chemical properties of the stellar populations as observed on the chromosome map. Both Type I and Type II GCs are discussed. For the youngest clusters I will briefly report our latest spectroscopic analysis on the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 1818 and the Galactic open cluster M 11, which supports the co-existence of stellar populations with different rotation rates.

We present a new method to derive 2D star formation histories in dwarf irregular galaxies. Based on multicolor stellar photometry data we have found that in the Leo A galaxy during the last ∽400 Myr star formation was propagating according to the inside-out scenario. Star-forming regions have spread strongly asymmetrically from the center and their present day distribution correlates well with the Hi surface density maps.

We propose that two emission regions are present in the decelerating jet of radio galaxy at this same moment. Isotropic electrons, in the farther blob as counted along the jet, up-scatter mono-directional soft radiation, from the closer blob, at a relatively large angles to the jet axis. Such model can naturally explain the large angle gamma-ray emission observed from radio galaxies.

We report on the detection of a rich water reservoir in the protostellar envelope of the Class 0 source HH211. In striking contrast to all other molecules detected with Herschel/PACS, water emission peaks around the central source where both ortho and para forms are detected. The measured ortho-to-para ratio of just 0.65 indicates formation of water-ice at very low temperatures and a non-destructive photo-desorption process around the protostar. While part of the H2O emission is likely related to collisional excitation, the centralized morphology around the protostar suggests that radiative excitation is also significant, despite the fact that radiation appears to have a very different impact on the H2O molecules when compared to the terminal outflow shocks. The very low ortho-to-para ratio suggests that H2O around the protostar originates from primordial envelope material that has never been thermally processed before.

Radio emission from astrophysical transients allows us to derive calorimetry of kinetic feedback and detailed imaging in ways that are not possible at other wavelengths, and as such it forms an important part of the multi-messenger follow-ups of these events. The field is burgeoning, with a renaissance of interest in accretion, stellar explosions and jetted supernovæ, alongside newer classes of phenomena such as fast radio bursts and tidal disruption events. The purpose of this workshop was to discuss the infrastructure and techniques for detecting, identifying and probing radio transients, with a particular focus on how best to exploit transient alerts from multi-messenger facilities. We examined the type of transient alerts those facilities will broadcast, and methods for following them up, such as rapid-response triggering and shadowing. In break-out groups, participants chose a science question related to a particular radio transient type or class and discussed whether the planned transient strategies and observing techniques on the Square Kilometre Array will be adequate to address the particular question. The classes they chose included fast radio bursts, supernovæ, cataclysmic variable and unknown transients. Any proposed adaptation or suggestion was relayed to a panel of experts for further discussion. The second part of the workshop concentrated on the application of long baseline interferometry for detecting and measuring radio transients.

Recently, the sample size of stars with detailed, homogeneous abundances in the massive bulge Globular cluster NGC 6388 expanded to 185 giants. We use this wealth of data to present first results on its multiple stellar populations. In particular, i) we introduce a new diagnostic plot to survey the occurrence of very high temperature for H-burning in the first-generation polluters, and ii) we pinpoint a restricted temperature range reached by polluters at work in NGC 6388.

Nearby star-forming galaxies offer a unique environment to study the populations of young (<100 Myr) accreting binaries. These systems are tracers of past populations of massive stars that heavily affect their immediate environment and parent galaxies. Using a Chandra X-ray Visionary program, we investigate the young neutron-star binary population in the low metallicity of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) by reaching quiescent X-ray luminosity levels (~few times 1032 erg/s). We present the first measurement of the formation efficiency of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) as a function of the age of their parent stellar populations by using 3 indicators: the number ratio of HMXBs to OB stars, to the SFR, and to the stellar mass produced during the specific star-formation burst they are associated with. In all cases, we find that the HMXB formation efficiency increases as a function of time up to ~40–60 Myr, and then gradually decreases.

Protoplanetary disks are expected to form through the gravitational collapse of magnetized rotating dense cores. We discuss the structure and emission of models of accretion disks threaded by a poloidal magnetic field and irradiated by the central star, expected to form in this process (Shu et al. 2007; Lizano et al. 2016). The poloidal magnetic field produces sub-keplerian rotation of the gas which can accelerate planet migration (Adams et al. 2009). It can make the disk more stable against gravitational perturbations (Lizano et al. 2010). Also, the magnetic compression can reduce the disk scale height with respect to nonmagnetic disks. We find that the mass-to-flux ratio λ is a critical parameter: disks with a weaker magnetization (high values of λ) are denser and hotter and emit more at millimeter wavelengths than disks with a stronger magnetization (low values of λ). Applying these models to the millimeter observations of the disk around the young star HL Tau indicate the large grains are present at the external radii in order to reproduce the observed 7 mm emission that extends up to 100 AU (Tapia & Lizano 2017). In the near future, observations with ALMA and VLA will be able to determine the level of magnetization of protoplanetary disks, which will be important to understand their formation and evolution.

Understanding the effect of environment on galaxy formation and evolution is one of the hot topics in extragalactic astronomy. Here we constructed a chemical evolution model of disk galaxies. By comparing the model predictions with the observed profiles, we investigated the star formation history of M33, NGC 300 and NGC 2403. We found that M33 has much longer infall timescale than NGC 300 and NGC 2403, and the star formation process of M33 is still active at later phase. Our results suggested that the cold gas supply of M33 is sufficient in the present-day, which may originate from the HI bridge between M33 and M31. In other words, we argue that the local environment plays an important role on the star formation history of a galaxy, at least for M33.

The formation of EHB stars is linked to the lives of AGB stars by indications that such EHB/sdB stars might form in globular clusters with multiple populations linked to AGB evolution. Observations of massive globular clusters, such as ω-Centauri (Bedin et al.2004, Piotto et al.2005) suggest that single EHB stars might form from He-enhanced progenitors (D’Antona et al.2005, D’Antona & Caloi 2008, Lee et al.2005) in environments enriched by AGB ejecta. The studies conducted by Han et al. (2002), Han et al. (2003), and Han et al. (2007) have been able to provide a strong case for the binary formation of EHB/sdB stars in the Galactic field, though binary formation channels in globular clusters is uncertain. Simulations presented here are an extension of the simulations of Han et al. (2002) and Han et al. (2003), for low metallicities to examine the binary EHB population in globular clusters.

We present the initial results of a census of 684 barred galaxies in the MaNGA galaxy survey. This large sample contains galaxies with a wide range of physical properties, and we attempt to link bar properties to key observables for the whole galaxy. We find the length of the bar, when normalised for galaxy size, is correlated with the distance of the galaxy from the star formation main sequence, with more passive galaxies hosting larger-scale bars. Ionised gas is observed along the bars of low-mass galaxies only, and these galaxies are generally star-forming and host short bars. Higher-mass galaxies do not contain Hα emission along their bars, however, but are more likely to host rings or Hα at the centre and ends of the bar. Our results suggest that different physical processes are at play in the formation and evolution of bars in low- and high-mass galaxies.

It has been controversial for years that the accretion mode is different for bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs). In this work, we compile from literature a sample of 32 LLAGNs, consisting 18 LINERs and 14 low Eddington ratio (λ) Seyfert galaxies. A strong negative correlation between the radio loudness RUV and the optical to X-ray spectral index αox is reported for the first time. We further demonstrate that this negative correlation can be understood consistently and comprehensively under the truncated accretion — jet model, a model that has been applied successfully to LLAGNs. We argue that the scatter in the observations is mainly due to the spread in the viscosity parameter α of a hot accretion flow, a parameter that can potentially serve as a diagnosis of the strength and/or configuration of magnetic fields in accretion flows.

Accretion disks are observed around young stellar objects such as T Tauri stars. In order to complete the star formation, particles in the disk need to loose angular momentum in order to be accreted into the central object. The magneto-rotational instability (MRI) is probably the mechanism responsible for a magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence that leads to disk accretion, which implies the disk particles to be coupled with the magnetic filed lines. As the temperature in the disk is low, we considered, besides the viscous heating mechanism often included in the models by means of the α - prescription, the damping of Alfvén waves as an additional heating source. In particular, we show that the mechanism derived that couples the turbulent and non-linear damping mechanisms of Alfvén waves proved to be very efficient, generating temperatures almost one order of magnitude higher than those mechanisms considered independently.

High-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) provide an exciting window into the underlying processes of both binary as well as massive star evolution. Because HMXBs are systems containing a compact object accreting from a high-mass star at close orbital separations they are also likely progenitors of gamma-ray bursts and gravitational wave sources. We present classification and age measurements for HMXBs in M33 using a combination of deep Chandra X-ray imaging, and archival Hubble Space Telescope data. We constrain the ages of the HMXB candidates by fitting the color-magnitude diagrams of the surrounding stars, which yield the star formation histories of the surrounding region. Unlike the age distributions measured for HMXB populations in the Magellanic Clouds, the age distribution for the HMXB population in M33 contains a number of extremely young (<5 Myr) sources. We discuss these results the context of the effect of host galaxy properties on the observed HMXB population.

We show our recent progress on the L-Galaxies semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, which focuses on the HI gas in low mass galaxies. We find that the model based on ELUCID haloes can reproduce the HI mass function from ALFALFA 100 at low mass end. On the other hand, our models predict some gas rich low mass galaxies around the Milky Way, which may offer opportunities for future HI 21cm survey in nearby universe by FAST and SKA-1.

The origin of the Brγ-line emission in Herbig Ae/Be stars is still an open question and might be related e.g., to a disc wind or the stellar magnetosphere. The study of the continuum and Brγ-emitting region of Herbig Ae/Be stars with high-spectral and high-spatial resolution gives great insights into the sub-au scale hydrogen gas distribution.

We observed the Herbig Be star MWC 120 with the VLTI/AMBER instrument in different spectral channels across the Brγ line with a spectral resolution of R~1500. Using radiative transfer modeling we found a radius of the line emitting region of ~0.4 au that is only two times smaller than the K-band continuum region. This is consistent with a disc wind scenario rather than an origin of magnetospheric emission.

We present near-infrared AMBER (R~12000) observations of the Herbig B[e] star MWC297 in the Brγ-line. We found that the near-infrared continuum emission is ~3.6 times more compact than the expected dust-sublimation radius, possibly indicating the presence of highly refractory dust grains or optically thick gas emission in the inner disk. Our velocity-resolved channel maps marking the first time that kinematic effects in the sub-AU inner regions of a protoplanetary disk could be directly imaged.

Models of magnetically driven accretion reproduce many observational properties of T Tauri stars. For the more massive Herbig Ae/Be stars, the corresponding picture has been questioned lately, in part driven by the fact that their magnetic fields are typically one order of magnitude weaker. Indeed, the search for magnetic fields in Herbig Ae/Be stars has been quite time consuming, with a detection rate of about 10% (e.g. Alecian et al. 2008), also limited by the current potential to detect weak magnetic fields. Over the last two decades, magnetic fields were found in about twenty objects (Hubrig et al. 2015) and for only two Herbig Ae/Be stars was the magnetic field geometry constrained. Ababakr, Oudmaijer & Vink (2017) studied magnetospheric accretion in 56 Herbig Ae/Be stars and found that the behavior of Herbig Ae stars is similar to T Tauri stars, while Herbig Be stars earlier than B7/B8 are clearly different. The origin of the magnetic fields in Herbig Ae/Be stars is still under debate. Potential scenarios include the concentration of the interstellar magnetic field under magnetic flux conservation, pre-main-sequence dynamos during convective phases, mergers, or common envelope developments. The next step in this line of research will be a dedicated observing campaign to monitor about two dozen HAeBes over their rotation cycle.

I will present results obtained by means of three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the formation of second generation (SG) stars in a young globular cluster (GC). Our setup includes the mass return from Asymptotic Giant branch (AGB) stars, the accretion of pristine gas as well as star formation of SG stars, three ingredients which have never been simultaneously taken into account in previous 3D numerical studies of GC formation. The cluster is set in motion with respect to a distribution of gas and allowed to accrete mass from it. Formation of SG stars occurs out of the gas shed by AGB stars and from the gas accreted during the motion of the cluster. We consider two models characterised by different densities of the external gas. In both cases, we find that a very compact SG subsystem with central density > 105M⊙/pc3 forms in the innermost regions of the cluster.
