I review the current status of dynamical modelling of dwarf spheroidal galaxies focusing on estimates of their dark matter content. Starting with the simplest methods using the velocity dispersion profiles I discuss the inherent issues of mass-anisotropy degeneracy and contamination by unbound stars. I then move on to methods of increasing complexity, aiming to break the degeneracy, up to recent applications of the Schwarzschild orbit superposition method. The dynamical modelling is placed in the context of possible scenarios for the formation of dwarf spheroidal galaxies, including the tidal stirring model and mergers of dwarf galaxies. The two scenarios are illustrated with examples from simulations: a comparison between the tidal evolution of dwarfs with cuspy and cored dark matter profiles and the formation of a dwarf spheroidal with prolate rotation.

While the Sun is a quiet and well-balanced star now, during its first few million years it possessed a strong magnetic field and actively accreted material from its circumstellar environment. Theoretical models predict that under certain circumstances the interaction of a strongly magnetic star and its circumstellar disk may lead to short bursts of increased accretion onto the star (D’Angelo & Spruit 2012). Examples for this phenomenon may be the members of a group of young eruptive stars called EXors. Their prototype, EX Lup, had its historically largest outburst in 2008. Spectroscopic evidence suggests that the mass accretion proceeds through the same magnetospheric accretion channels both in quiescence and in outburst but with different mass flux (Sicilia-Aguilar et al. 2012). To characterize for the first time EX Lup’s magnetic field, we obtained spectropolarimetric monitoring for it with the CFHT/ESPaDOnS. We detected strong, poloidal magnetic field with a prominent cool polar cap and an accretion spot above it. We compared our results with numerical simulations, in order to check the applicability of the d’Angelo & Spruit model as an explanation of EX Lup’s accretion outbursts. If EX Lup is a good proxy for the proto-Sun, similar magnetic field-disk interactions and outbursts might have happened during the early evolution of the Solar System as well.

Results of mass imaging nearby dwarf galaxies in emission Hα line and red continuum with the 6-meter BTA telescope are available via the address: http://www.sao.ru/lv/lvgdb. The sample of dwarfs limited by a distance of 11 Mpc contains about 500 objects. Their Hα - fluxes are used to derive integrated and specific star formation rates of the galaxies. We evaluate the consistency between star formation rates obtained from our Hα-survey and GALEX far-ultraviolet survey. We fix a systematic rise of the ratio SFR(FUV)/SFR(Hα) with the decreasing stellar mass of dwarf galaxies. In the sample there were included only galaxies of late types: T = 10 (Ir), 9 (Im, BCD), 8 (Sdm), 7 (Sd), 6 (Scd), since elliptical and lenticular galaxies, and also spiral with massive bulges, have a significantly different history of star formation.

Supernovae and astrophysical jets are two of the most energetic and intriguing objects in the universe. We examine an interesting scenario that involves the interaction of these two extreme phenomena, motivated by observations of the W50-SS433 system: a jet launched from the microquasar SS433 (an X-ray binary) located inside a supernova remnant, W50. These observations revealed a unique morphology of the remnant, attributed to the presence of the jet. We performed full 3D relativistic hydrodynamic simulations to better capture the interaction between the remnant and the jet and post-processed the data with a radiative transfer code to create emission maps.

In this work, we present spectroscopic results of the variable star R Scuti, obtained during the campaign of measures led in 2016 at the Oukaimeden observatory in Morrocco. High resolution spectra (R ≍ 12 000) were obtained between 4289 Å and 7125 Å. This intensive observing campaign spanned over 26 nights from June to November 2016.

Considering as many as 70% of massive stars interact with a binary companion (Sana et al.2012, 2014), we created a new model of the optical nebular emission of HII regions by combining the results of the Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis (BPASS, Eldridge, Stanway et al.2017) code with the photoionization code (CLOUDY). This is discussed more in detail in Xiao et al.2018a. Then we use this model to explore a variety of emission-line diagnostics of CCSN host HII regions from the PMAS/PPAK Integral-field Supernova hosts COmpilation (PISCO, Galbany et al.2018). We determine the age, metallicity and gas parameters for H II regions associated with CCSNe, contrasting the above variables to distribution type II and type Ibc SNe. We find their nebular emission and CCSN progenitor types are largely determined by past and ongoing binary interactions, for example mass loss, mass gain and stellar mergers. However we note these two types SNe have little preference in their host environment metallicity measured by oxygen abundance or in progenitor initial mass, except that at lower metallicities supernovae are more likely to be of type II. As photometric standards, A-Type stars have proved to be extremely useful; this is particularly true of Vega, the fundamental photometric standard. However, the identification of at least some main-sequence A-type stars as small-amplitude variables, while of interest as an issue of fundamental astrophysics, needs to be understood if they are to continue to be used as photometric standards. Flaring and Rossby waves are proposed in the literature as possible explanations, as was discussed during a well-attended Workshop debate. This report summarises the discussion, and suggests future investigations.

Stars and planets form from the same material, thus some of their properties are expected to be inter-connected. In order to characterise exoplanets, we need to investigate the planet-hosting stars. Carbon and oxygen are quite abundant and play an important role in stellar interiors by generating energy in thermonuclear reactions. Abundances of C and O may influence water availability on exoplanets. The C/O ratio also controls an amount of carbides and silicates that can be formed. Thus, we are performing a uniform study of C/O ratios in bright stars ( V < mag) located towards the northern ecliptic pole which will be targeted by the TESS and JWST space missions. The first results for a sample of 140 stars analysed are presented.

The internal dynamics of multiple stellar populations in Globular Clusters (GCs) provides unique constraints on the physical processes responsible for their formation. Specifically, the present-day kinematics of cluster stars, such as rotation and velocity dispersion, seems to be related to the initial configuration of the system. In recent work (Milone et al. 2018), we analyzed for the first time the kinematics of the different stellar populations in NGC 0104 (47 Tucanae) over a large field of view, exploiting the Gaia Data Release 2 proper motions combined with multi-band ground-based photometry. In this paper, based on the work by Cordoni et al. (2019), we extend this analysis to six GCs, namely NGC 0288, NGC 5904 (M 5), NGC 6121 (M 4), NGC 6752, NGC 6838 (M 71) and further explore NGC 0104. Among the analyzed clusters only NGC 0104 and NGC 5904 show significant rotation on the plane of the sky. Interestingly, multiple stellar populations in NGC 5904 exhibit different rotation curves.

Recent advanced simulations of protoplanetary disks allow us to search for observational constraints to identify the magnetic field activity in protoplanetary disks. With our 3D radiation non-ideal magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) models including irradiation from an Herbig type star we are able to model the thermal and dynamical evolution in a so far never reached detail (Flock et al. 2017). The activity of the magneto-rotational instability in the inner hot ionized regions comes along with a magnetic dynamo. The oscillations in the mean toroidal magnetic field with a timescale of 10 local orbits can slightly bend the inner dust rim and so the irradiation surface. This causes a clear variability pattern in the near infrared (NIR) emission at the dust inner rim surface. Another way to identify the presence of magnetic fields are to search for polarization signatures. Using 3D non-ideal MHD simulations of the outer disk regions (Flock et al. 2015) we calculate synthetic images of the intrinsically polarized continuum emitted by aspherical grain aligned with the dominantly toroidal magnetic field (Bertrang et al. 2017). Our results show a clear radial polarization pattern for face-on observed disk, similar to recent observations by Ohashi et al. (2018). Additionally, we are even able to see the change of the polarization pattern inside the vortex as the poloidal magnetic field dominates therein.

Recent observations of globular clusters encourage to revise some aspects of the traditional paradigm, in which they were considered to be isotropic in velocity space and non-rotating. However, the theory of collisionless spheroids with some kinematic richness has seldom been studied. We present here a further step in this direction, owing to new results regarding the linear stability of rotating Plummer spheres, with varying anisotropy in velocity space and total amount of angular momentum. We extend the well-known radial orbit instability to rotating systems, and discover a new regime of instability in fast rotating, tangentially anisotropic systems.

The occurence rate of tidal disruption events (TDEs) by survey missions depend on the black hole mass function of the galaxies, properties of the stellar cusp and mass of the central black hole. Using a power law density profile with Kroupa mass function, we solve the steady state Fokker-Planck to calculate the theoretical capture rate of stars by the black hole. Using a steady accretion model, the Schechter black hole mass function (BHMF) and the cosmological parameters, we calculate the detection rate of TDEs for various surveys which is then fit with the observed TDE rates to extract the Schechter parameters. The rate tension between observation (∼10−5yr−1) and theory (∼10−4yr−1 for individual galaxies is explained by the statistical average over the BHMF.

Using a hybrid binary population synthesis approach, we modelled the formation and evolution of populations of accreting white dwarfs (WDs) for differing star formation histories. We found that the delay time distribution of SNe Ia in the single degenerate scenario is inconsistent with observations. Additionally, we found that our predicted X-ray and UV emission of populations of accreting WDs are consistent with the X-ray luminosities of early-type galaxies observed by Chandra and the HeII 4686 Å/Hβ line ratio measured in stacked SDSS spectra of passively evolving galaxies. Moreover, we found that the majority of current novae in elliptical-like galaxies have low-mass WDs, long decay times, long recurrence periods and are relatively faint. In contrast, the majority of current novae in spiral-like galaxies have massive WDs, short decay times, short recurrence periods and are relatively bright. Our predicted distribution of mass-loss timescales in an M31-like galaxy is consistent with observations for Andromeda.

Present-day structural and kinematical properties of multiple populations (MPs) can provide useful information about the physical mechanisms driving the formation and early evolution of globular clusters (GCs). As part of a large project aimed at characterizing the kinematics of MPs, here we present a detailed multi-epoch analysis of the low-mass GC NGC6362. We find that MPs in this system show significant differences in their line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles. This result is totally unexpected given the dynamical age and fraction of mass lost by NGC6362. We also find that the binary fraction is remarkably larger in the first (FP) than in the second population (SP). We show that such a difference can efficiently inflate the velocity dispersion of FP at intermediate/large cluster-centric distances with respect to SP. Indeed, our results nicely match the predictions of state-of-the art N-body simulations of the co-evolution of MPs in GCs including the effect of binaries.

In order to understand the interaction between dark matter and baryonic matter in the galaxy evolution history, it is fundamental to constrain dark matter (DM) distribution in galaxies. However, it is difficult to constrain DM profile in the central region of early type galaxy because of the lack of extended neutral hydrogen gas and the degeneracy between dynamical stellar M/L and DM profile. To resolve this difficulty, we conducted combined analysis of ALMA cold molecular gas kinematics and MUSE stellar kinematics of early type fast rotator galaxy NGC1380. In addition, we used HST image to trace the stellar luminosity distribution. With the help of high resolution of ALMA image and large field of view of MUSE, we derived the central BH mass, stellar bulge, disk and DM profile.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is providing important advances in studies of star formation. In particular, polarimetry can reveal the disk magnetic configuration, a crucial ingredient in many processes, as, for example, the transport of angular momentum. We analized ALMA Band 7 (870 μm) polarimetric data at 0.”2 resolution for the young rotating disk/jet systems DG Tau and CW Tau, to find magnetic signatures. From the Stokes I, U, Q maps, we derive the linear polarization intensity, $P = \sqrt {{Q^2} + {U^2}} $ , the linear polarization fraction, and the polarization angle. The alignment of the latter with the disk minor axis (Fig. 1) shows that self-scattering of dust thermal emission rather than magnetic alignment dominates the polarization in both targets (Bacciotti et al. 2018). However, several dust properties can be diagnosed comparing the polarization data with the models of self-scattering (e.g. Kataoke et al. 2017, Yang et al. 2017). The maximum grain size turns out to be in the range 50 - 70 μm for DG Tau and 100 - 150 μm for CW Tau. The asymmetry of the polarized intensity in DG Tau, observed for the first time around a T Tauri star, indicates that the disk is flared. Moreover, the observed belt-like feature may betray the presence of a disk substructure. In contrast, the polarization maps of CW Tau indicate that here the grains have settled to the disk midplane. Polarimetry is thus very important in studies of the dust evolution.

It is shown that spatial ordering of the Solar planetary system can be described by simple wave algorithms. It is detected that the dependence “mean density – global period” reflects the ordering of this system and has signs of an evolutionary diagram.

The X-ray sky is dominated by luminous galactic sources, variable on time-scales from milliseconds to years. Their eruptive behaviour is now under continuous monitoring by MAXI, Swift, INTEGRAL and other high-energy missions, and representing a superb exemplar of time-domain astronomy. Understanding the astrophysics of such variability requires multi-wavelength follow-up studies from a suite of ground- and space-based facilities. As SALT is a 100% Q-scheduled telescope, one of its key scientific capabilities is related to Target-of-Opportunity (ToO) programmes, and there has been a dedicated SALT Large Programme on Transients in place since 2016, a significant fraction of which has been devoted to the follow-up of X-ray binary transients. This Workshop addressed questions of how such programmes should evolve once the era of MeerKAT and MeerLICHT begins in ∼2018-9 (as well as other huge surveys at optical wavelengths), identifying the range of facilities that would be needed, and the key science topics. There is a clear and growing need for responses to transients to be faster (within minutes if possible), and to be multi-wavelength (particularly in radio and X-ray). Furthermore, extended ongoing coverage of such events (days to weeks for the next ‘V404 Cyg’-type outburst) will be needed for maximum astrophysical return. That would require careful management and coordination of a wide range of ground- and space-based facilities, and optimising coverage against logistical constraints that are often conflicting.

We use deep Chandra and HST data to uniquely classify the X-ray binary (XRB) populations in M81 on the basis of their donor stars and local stellar populations (into early-type main sequence, yellow giant, supergiant, low-mass, and globular cluster). First, we find that more massive, redder, and denser globular clusters are more likely to be associated with XRBs. Second, we find that the high-mass XRBs (HMXBs) overall have a steeper X-ray luminosity function (XLF) than the canonical star-forming galaxy XLF, though there is some evidence of variations in the slopes of the sub-populations. On the other hand, the XLF of the prototypical starburst M82 is described by the canonical powerlaw (αcum ∼ 0.6) down to LX ∼ 1036 erg s−1. We attribute variations in XLF slopes to different mass transfer modes (Roche-lobe overflow versus wind-fed systems).

Here I briefly highlight our studies of the gas content, kinematics and star formation in nearby dwarf galaxies (D < 10 Mpc) based on the ‘Local Volume Hi Survey’ (LVHIS, Koribalski et al. 2018), which was conducted with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The LVHIS sample consists of nearly 100 galaxies, including new discoveries, spanning a large diversity in size, shape, mass and degree of peculiarity. The hydrogen properties of dwarf galaxies in two nearby groups, Sculptor and CenA / M83, are analysed and compared with many rather isolated dwarf galaxies. Around 10% of LVHIS galaxies are transitional or mixed-type dwarf galaxies (dIrr/dSph), the formation of which is explored. — I also provide a brief update on WALLABY Early Science, where we focus on studying the Hi properties of galaxies as a function of environment. WALLABY (Dec < +30 degr, z < 0.26) is conducted with the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP), a ∽6-km diameter array of 36 × 12-m dishes, each equipped with wide-field (30 sq degr) Chequerboard Phased Array Feeds.
