Planets form in protoplanetary accretion discs around young protostars. These discs are driven by internal turbulence and the gas flow is not laminar but has stochastic components. For weakly ionised discs the turbulence can be generated purely hydrodynamically through the vertical shear instability (VSI). Embedded particles (dust/pebbles) experience a hydrodynamic drag and drift inward radially and are stirred up vertically by the turbulent motion of the disc. We study the accretion of particles onto a forming planet embedded in a VSI turbulent protoplanetary disc through a series of 3D hydrodynamical simulations for locally isothermal discs with embedded planets in the mass range from 5 to 100 Earth masses (M2295).

Magnetic fields are believed to redistribute part of the angular momentum during the collapse and could explain the order-of-magnitude difference between the angular momentum observed in protostellar envelopes and that of a typical main sequence star. The Class 0 phase is the main accretion phase during which most of the final stellar material is collected on the central embryo. To study the structure of the magnetic fields on 50-2000 au scales during that key stage, we acquired SMA polarization observations (870μm) of 12 low-mass Class 0 protostars. In spite of their low luminosity, we detect dust polarized emission in all of them. We observe depolarization effects toward high-density regions potentially due to variations in alignment efficiency or in the dust itself or geometrical effects. By comparing the misalignment between the magnetic field and the outflow orientation, we show that the B is either aligned or perpendicular to the outflow direction. We observe a coincidence between the misalignment and the presence of large perpendicular velocity gradients and fragmentation in the protostar (Galametz et al. 2018). Our team is using MHD simulations combined with the radiative transfer code POLARIS to produce synthetic maps of the polarized emission. This work is helping us understand how the magnetic field varies from the large-scale to the small-scales, quantify beam-averaging biases and study the variations of the polarization angles as a function of wavelength or the assumption made on the grain alignment (see poster by Valdivia).

The hosts of long Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are places of intense star-formation, which, at low redshift, are primarily low-mass dwarf starburst galaxies. Spatially resolved studies of these galaxies are still sparse, even more so at high spectral resolution where we can probe gas kinematics, in- and outflows and differences in abundance between different components. Here we present the first high resolution IFU sample of six low redshift GRB hosts, all dwarf starbursts. All galaxies in our sample show evidence for excess emission or broad emission components, with velocities of 100-200 km s−1. For GRB 030329, outflowing gas had also been observed in absorption in spectra of the GRB afterglow. The high velocity emission is usually blue shifted, connected to the brightest star-forming regions and more metal rich than the narrow component associated with the emission of the general host ISM. This gives strong indications that the excess emission/broad component is indeed associated to a starburst wind as observed in many field star-burst galaxies and a sign for the intense ongoing star-formation in those galaxies.

The low-mass end of the initial mass function remains poorly understood. In this mass range, very low-mass stars, brown dwarfs, and massive planets are able to form through a variety of physical processes. Here, we study the long-term evolution of disk-fragmented systems around low-mass stars, for the epoch up to 10 Myr (the typical lifetime of an embedded cluster) and up to 10 Gyr (the age of the Milky Way). We carry out N-body simulations to study the decay of disk-fragmented systems and the resulting end products. Our simulations indicate rapid decay and frequent physical collisions during the first 10 Myr. We find that disk fragmentation provides a viable mechanism for explaining hierarchical triple systems, the brown dwarf desert, single and binary brown dwarfs, and very low-mass binary systems in the solar neighbourhood.

We studied a sample of 1672 galaxies in regions where a GRB event had occurred, in order to determine if the galactic environment plays a significant role on these energetic events. The Luminosity Function distribution for these galaxies shows some interesting features. For instance, there is a decline on the Luminosity Function at Mr~ −20.5; a lack of flatness at Mr~ −14 and higher-than-expected values of Φ(Mr) for Mr < −22.5. A comparison between our data and the Void, Wall and Early galaxies Luminosity Function was performed.

One of the major and widely known small scale problem with the Lambda CDM model of cosmology is the “core-cusp” problem. In this study we investigate whether this problem can be resolved using bar instabilities. We see that all the initial bars are thin (b/a < 0.3) in our simulations and the bar becomes thick ( b /a > 0.3) faster in the high resolution simulations. By increasing the resolution, we mean a larger number of disk particles. The thicker bars in the high resolution simulations transfer less angular momentum to the halo. Hence, we find that in the high resolution simulations it takes around 7 Gyr for the bar to remove inner dark matter cusp which is too long to be meaningful in galaxy evolution timescales. Physically, the reason is that as the resolution increases, the bar buckles faster and becomes thicker much earlier on.

In the era of ALMA, we can now resolve polarization within circumstellar disks at (sub)millimeter wavelengths. While many initially hoped that these observations would map magnetic fields in disks, the observed polarization patterns indicate other possible polarization mechanisms. These alternative polarization mechanisms include Rayleigh self-scattering, grains aligning with the radiation anisotropy (k-RAT alignment), and mechanical alignment. Stephens et al. (2017) specifically showed that the polarization morphology in HL Tau changes rapidly with wavelength; the morphology is uniform at 870 μm, azimuthal at 3.1 mm, and ∼50%/50% mix of the two at 1.3 mm. Although it has been suggested that the polarized emission at 870 μm is due to scattering and at 3.1 mm is due to k-RAT alignment, both mechanisms appear to have shortcomings. Specifically, Kataoka et al. (2017) showed that scattering requires much smaller grains (10s of μm) than that suggested by other studies, while k-RAT alignment suggest a significant decrease in polarization along the minor axis, which is not seen. Studies of other disks have suggested that polarization may come from grains aligned with the magnetic fields, but these studies are inconclusive. Understanding and extracting information about the polarized emission from disks requires multi-wavelength and high resolution observations.

We report on new molecular-line observations of the bipolar pre-planetary nebula M 1–92. The new IRAM 30 m MRT and NOEMA data shows the presence of shock induced chemistry in the nebula. From the derived [17O]/[18O] ratio, we suggest that the sudden mass loss event responsible for the formation of the nebula 1200 yr ago may also have resulted in the premature end of the AGB phase of the central star.

Large-scale, broad outflows are common in active galaxies. In systems where star formation coexists with an AGN, it is unclear yet the role that both play on driving the outflows. In this work we present three-dimensional radiative-cooling MHD simulations of the formation of these outflows, considering the feedback from both the AGN and supernovae-driven winds. We find that a large-opening-angle AGN wind develops fountain structures that make the expanding gas to fallback. Furthermore, it exhausts the gas near the nuclear region, extinguishing star formation and accretion within a few 100.000 yr, which establishes the duty cycle of these outflows. The AGN wind accounts for the highest speed features in the outflow with velocities around 10.000 km s−1 (as observed in UFOs), but these are not as cold and dense as required by observations of molecular outflows. The SNe-driven wind is the main responsible for the observed mass-loading of the outflows.

This talk provided an overview and update of the LSST Project and a review of the Data Management system, with a focus on the products most relevant to the researchers of transients and variables. The open opportunities for user-defined Special Programmes such as Deep Drilling Fields were also presented.

. The black hole X-ray binary V404Cyg was studied during of the 2015 outburst. Optical photometry and spectroscopy were performed by using 1.5-meter Russian-Turkish telescope (RTT-150) facilities at the TUBITAK National Observatory (Antalya, Turkey). From June 22 to June 28, 2015, shell expansion velocity decreased from 650 to 400 km s–1 as measured by Hα and Hβ lines and from 450 to 330 km s–1 as measured by HeI and HeII lines. Thus, the shell expansion occurred with deceleration, where the hydrogen and helium line formation regions are at different radial distances from the center of the star. The correlation of flow variability in the optical and X-ray ranges is caused by fluctuations in the rate of accretion near a compact source where X-ray photons are generated.

We study runaway stellar collisions in primordial star clusters and formation of intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs). Using cosmological simulations, we identify eight atomic-cooling halos in which the star clusters form. We follow stellar and dark matter (DM) dynamics for 3Myr using hybrid N-body simulations. We find that the runaway stellar collisions occur in all star clusters and IMBHs with masses ∼400–1900M⊙ form. Performing additional N-body simulations, we explore evolutions of the IMBHs in the star clusters for 15 Myr. The IMBH masses grow via stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) to ∼700–2500 M⊙. The TDE rates are ∼0.3–1.3 Myr−1. DM motions affect the star cluster evolutions and reduce the TDE rates. The IMBHs may subsequently grow to SMBHs by gas supply through galaxy mergers or large-scale gas inflows, or they may remain within or around the clusters.

The Medicina and Noto radiotelescopes have been employed for over 14 years to monitor the flux density variations of a vast sample of blazars at different radio frequencies. Radio data are essential components of blazar spectral energy distribution (SED, spanning from radio waves to gamma rays), whose trend with luminosity and shape changes provide decisive information on the physics of extra-galactic jets and, eventually, on the mechanism extracting energy from the central black hole in radio-loud AGN. Observations presently carried out at 5, 8 and 24 GHz have taken advantage of the continually evolving control system installed at the antennas. A new, batch-wise analysis tool was also produced, in order to easily handle and reduce the datasets acquired in monthly sessions. We here describe the latest developments and achievements.

In Bertrang et al. (2018), we present new data of the protoplanetary disk surrounding the Herbig Ae/Be star HD 169142 obtained in the very broad-band (VBB) with the Zurich imaging polarimeter (ZIMPOL), a subsystem of the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch instrument (SPHERE) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Our Polarimetric Differential Imaging (PDI) observations probe the disk as close as 0.″3 (3.5au) to the star and are able to trace the disk out to ~1.″08 (~126 au). We find an inner hole, a bright ring bearing substructures around ~0.″18 (21au), and an elliptically shaped gap stretching from 0.″25 to 0.″47 (29–55 au). Outside of 0.″47, the surface brightness drops off, discontinued only by a narrow annular brightness minimum at ~0.″63–0.″74 (74–87 au). These observations confirm features found in less-well resolved data as well as reveal yet undetected indications for planet-disk interactions, such as small-scale structures, star-disk offsets, and potentially moving shadows.

The standard scenario for the production of carbon-enhanced extremely metal-poor (CEMP) stars requires a more massive binary companion, which has evolved through the AGB stage and transferred carbon-rich material to the surface of the surviving, likewise extremely metal-poor (EMP) star. Evidently, the binary companion plays a key role in this process.

In order to characterise the polluting star, if any, the stage of evolution of the observed star (whether RGB or AGB), and whether pulsations exist, must be known. The Gaia DR2 parallaxes and photometry should contain the answer.

Highly magnetized accretion disks are present in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). A potential mechanism to explain the transition between the High/Soft and Low/Hard states observed in HMXBs can be attributed to fast magnetic reconnection induced in the turbulent corona. In this work, we present results of global general relativistic MHD (GRMHD) simulations of accretion disks around black holes that show that fast reconnection events can naturally arise in the coronal region of these systems in presence of turbulence triggered by MHD instabilities, indicating that such events can be a potential mechanism to explain the transient non-thermal emission in HMXBs. To find the zones of fast reconnection, we have employed an algorithm to identify the presence of current sheets in the turbulent regions and computed statistically the magnetic reconnection rates in these locations obtaining average reconnection rates consistent with the predictions of the theory of turbulence-induced fast reconnection.

The oral version of this paper summarized Kormendy & Ho 2013, ARA&A, 51, 511. However, earlier speakers at this Symposium worried that selection effects bias the derivation of black hole scaling relations. I therefore added – and this proceedings paper emphasizes – a discussion of why we can be confident that selection effects do not bias the observed correlations between BH mass M• and the luminosity, stellar mass, and velocity dispersion of host ellipticals and classical bulges. These are the only galaxy components that show tight BH-host correlations. The scatter plots of M• with host properties for pseudobulges and disks are upper envelopes of scatter that does extend to lower BH masses. BH correlations are most consistent with a picture in which BHs coevolve only with classical bulges and ellipticals. Four physical regimes of coevolution (or not) are suggested by Kormendy & Ho 2013 and are summarized here.

In this work we present our new estimates of the fundamental parameters of the open cluster Collinder 463, based on Gaia astrometric and PanSTARRS photometric data. In addition to updating previously available parameter values we highlight the existence of an extended stellar “halo” which is closely related to the presently known star cluster.

It has been recognized that non-ideal MHD effects (Ohmic diffusion, Hall effect, ambipolar diffusion) play crucial roles for the circumstellar disk formation and evolution. Ohmic and ambipolar diffusion decouple the gas and the magnetic field, and significantly reduces the magnetic torque in the disk, which enables the formation of the circumstellar disk (e.g., Tsukamoto et al. 2015b). They set an upper limit to the magnetic field strength of ∼ 0.1 G around the disk (Masson et al. 2016). The Hall effect notably changes the magnetic torques in the envelope around the disk, and strengthens or weakens the magnetic braking depending on the relative orientation of magnetic field and angular momentum. This suggests that the bimodal evolution of the disk size possibly occurs in the early disk evolutionary phase (Tsukamoto et al. 2015a, Tsukamoto et al. 2017). Hall effect and ambipolar diffusion imprint the possibly observable characteristic velocity structures in the envelope of Class 0/I YSOs. Hall effect forms a counter-rotating envelope around the disk. Our simulations show that counter rotating envelope has the size of 100–1000 au and a recent observation actually infers such a structure (Takakuwaet al. 2018). Ambipolar diffusion causes the significant ion-neutral drift in the envelopes. Our simulations show that the drift velocity of ion could become 100-1000 ms–1.

TAOS II is a next-generation occultation survey with the goal of measuring the size distribution of the small end of the Kuiper Belt (objects with diameters 0.5–30 km). Such objects have magnitudes r > 30, and are thus undetectable by direct imaging. The project will operate three telescopes at San Pedro Mártir Observatory in Baja California, México. Each telescope will be equipped with a custom-built camera comprised of a focal-plane array of CMOS imagers. The cameras will be capable of reading out image data from 10,000 stars at a cadence of 20 Hz. The telescopes will monitor the same set of stars simultaneously to search for coincident occultation detections, thus minimising the false-positive rate. This talk described the project, and reported on the progress of the development of the survey infrastructure.
