The main purpose for holding a Workshop about the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) was to move all participants further towards answering the question, “How will I do my science with LSST data?” Presentations included (i) the planned pipelines and products of the data management team, and (ii) the existing channels for communication within the science community and between the community and the LSST Data Management team. In between the formal presentations, small groups discussed matters such as how to select the data products or communications resources that were best suited to individual science goals. The latter discussions were designed both to facilitate engagement with the material and to foster collaboration. Participants should thus have become better equipped to continue on their respective individual paths towards science with LSST.

Almost all confirmed optical counterparts of HMXBs in the SMC are OB stars with equatorial decretion disks (OBe). These sources emit strongly in Balmer lines and standout when imaged through narrow-band Hα imaging. The lack of secure counterparts for a significant fraction of the HMXBs motivated us to search for more. Using the catalogs for OB/OBe stars (Maravelias et al.2017) and for HMXBs (Haberl & Sturm 2016) we detect 70 optical counterparts (out of 104 covered by our survey). We provide the first identification of the optical counterpart to the source XTEJ0050-731. We verify that 17 previously uncertain optical counterparts are indeed the proper matches. Regarding 52 confirmed HMXBs (known optical counterparts with Hα emission), we detect 39 as OBe and another 13 as OB stars. This allows a direct estimation of the fraction of active OBe stars in HMXBs that show Hα emission at a given epoch to be at least ∼75% of their total HMXB population.

We report preliminary results of long-term multi-frequency monitoring observations of S5 0716+714. We conducted observations at 22 and 43 GHz using Korean VLBI Network (KVN) radio telescopes and combined 8 (UMRAO), 15 (OVRO), 95 (CARMA), and 230 GHz (SMA) data to investigate characteristics of radio flares. We identified six flares (P1-P6) from 2010 November to 2014 June. The magnetic field strengths by assuming a synchrotron self-absorption model are in the range of 9 mG - 11 G in P2, 26 mG - 3G in P3, 3 mG - 38 G in P4, and 1 mG - 8 G in P6.

We estimated several parameters of dwarf galaxies, including their star formation rate and dust mass, and compared them with galaxies with larger stellar masses.

We have chosen dwarf galaxies in the ELAIS N1 field, and fitted their Spectral Energy Distributions (SED). We used data from the new Herschel SPIRE and PACS Point Source catalogues to constrain the infrared radiation. Data available in VIZIER from multiple surveys have also been used.

We determined that the star formation rate (SFR), M* and Mdust is one order of magnitude lower in dwarf galaxies compared to galaxies with larger stellar masses. However, the starburtiness was higher in the dwarf galaxies. They also had lower redshifts than normal galaxies, so we compared them to a subsample of normal galaxies with lower redshifts. The dust masses and SFRs of the dwarf galaxies were slightly lower, but their starburtiness was higher.

In this work, we proposed a possible mechanism for the formation S-type planet in close binaries (0.5 au < aB < 3 au). Numerical simulations showed that the maximum capture probability is ∼ 10%, which can be comparable to the tidal capture probability of hot Jupiters in single star systems. The capture probability is related to binary configurations. Furthermore, we find that S-type planets with retrograde orbits can be naturally produced via capture process. These planets on retrograde orbits can help us distinguish in situ formation and post-capture origin for S-type planet in close binaries. The forthcoming missions (PLATO or TESS) will provide the opportunity and feasibility to detect such planets.

We use 3D radiative-hydrodynamics simulations of convection with CO5BOLD and the post-processing radiative transfer code Optim3D to compute intensity maps in the Gaia G band [325–1030 nm]. We calculate the intensity-weighted mean of all emitting points tiling the visible stellar surface (i.e., the photo-center) and evaluate its motion as a function of time. We show that the convection-related variability accounts for a substantial part to the Gaia DR2 parallax error of our sample of semiregular variables. Finally, we denote that Gaia parallax variations could be exploited quantitatively to extract stellar parameters using appropriate RHD simulations corresponding to the observed star.

Numerous numerical studies suggest that magnetic fields influence the transport of dust and gas, the disk chemistry, the migration of planetesimals within the disk, and above all the accretion of matter onto the star. In short: Magnetic fields are crucial for the evolution of planet-forming disks. First indirect comparisons of theory and observations support this picture (Flock et al. 2017); however, profound observational constraints are still pending. Recent studies show that the intrinsically polarized continuum emission, the classical tracer of magnetic fields, might trace other physics as well (radiation field or dust grain size). The nearly face-on protoplanetary disk HD 142527 shows predominantly radial polarization vectors consistent with aspherical grains aligned by a toroidal magnetic field (Fig. 1; Bertrang et al. 2017a,b; Ohashi et al. 2018). However, the number of cutting-edge polarization observations presenting inconclusive data, for which these three different origins of polarization are not clearly distinguishable, increases continuously. We present a solution to this polarized ambiguity: observations and simulations of the most direct tracer of magnetic fields, polarized gas emission, in combination with multi-wavelength continuum polarization observations will disentangle the sources of continuum polarimetry with ALMA (Bertrang et al. 2017a,b; Bertrang & Cortés in prep.).

The Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) scenario for the formation of multiple populations has been quantitatively studied in the course of the last twenty years, examining the aspects both of nucleosynthesis and of the dynamics of formation of new stars in a cooling flow at the center of the first generation cluster, and of the following N–body evolution. The large complexity of these studies finds many validations in the properties of multiple populations. Here I shortly summarize recent accomplishments in the study of the evolution of massive AGBs and super–AGBs including the explanation of anomalous high lithium abundances in ‘extreme’ second generation stars in ω Cen and NGC 2808.

We present a new method to combine cold gas kinematics with the stellar kinematics modelled with the Schwarzschild orbit-superposition technique, and its application to the lenticular galaxy NGC 2974. The combination of stellar and cold gas kinematics significantly improves the constraints on the measured dark matter profile: assuming a generalised NFW halo profile, we find a cuspy inner halo slope for NGC 2974.

We study the mixing in low-intermediate massive stars using eclipsing binaries. We compute stellar evolutionary models with a varying convective core overshooting parameter and different rotation rates. Using a Bayesian estimation method, we found that the coexistence of the two phenomena may be a reasonable explanation of the observed extra-mixing.

We present results from a non-cosmological, three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation of an outflow from an intermediate-mass black hole in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies. Assuming an initial baryonic-to-dark-matter ratio derived from the CMB radiation and a cored, static dark matter potential, we evolved the galactic gas distribution over 3 Gyr, taking into account the outflow of a black hole. Our results indicate that in a homogeneous medium the outflow propagates freely in both directions with the same velocity and its capable of removing a fraction of the gas from the galaxy (it depends on the initial conditions of the outflow). When the SNe are taken into account, the effect of the outflow is substantially reduced. It is necessary an initial velocity around 1000 km/s and a density larger than 0.003 particles.cm−3 for the outflow to propagate. In these conditions, the removal of gas from the galaxy is almost negligible at the end of the 3 Gyr of the simulation.

One idea for the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars suggests that the magnetic field is the fossil remnant of the Galactic ISM magnetic field, amplified during the collapse of the magnetised gas cloud. A search for the presence of magnetic fields in massive stars located in active sites of star formation led to the detection of rather strong magnetic fields in a few young stars. Future spectropolarimetric observations are urgently needed to obtain insights into the mechanisms that drive the generation of kG magnetic fields during high-mass star formation.

We recently discovered that NGC 3201 has characteristics that set it outside the current twofold classification scheme for Galactic globular clusters (GCs). Most GCs are mono-metallic and show light-element abundance variations (e.g., Na-O and C-N anti-correlations); but a minority of clusters also present variations in Fe correlating with s-process element and C+N+O abundances, and they possess multiple C-N sequences. These anomalous GCs also have a broad sub-giant branch (SGB) and follow the same mass-size relation as dwarf galaxies possibly evolving into GCs. We now revealed that NGC 3201 belongs to neither group. It has multiple C-N sequences, but no broad SGB, no strong evidence of a Fe-spread, and it does not follow the mass-size relation.

This Workshop covered a cornucopia of topics that were featured in short formal presentations, followed by a round-table discussion. G. Hosseinzadeh and H. Kuncarayakti presented the results of their recent researches into interacting supernovæ. They included both the intriguing Type Ibn supernova subclass, and SN 2017dio, which appears to be the first Type Ic supernova to be seen to exhibit signatures of hydrogen-rich circumstellar interaction at all phases. M. Sullivan provided a summary relating to the future of transient science in the era of Big Data, and participants discussed strategies to determine which targets and fields should be selected for spectroscopic follow-up. The Workshop concluded with a rather heated discussion regarding the need for the IAU Supernovæ Working Group to consider modifying the current criterion for a confirmed supernova in order for it to receive an official IAU designation.

In our earlier studyDutta (2016a), it has been shown that a number of primordial protostars (the ‘first stars’ in the Universe, also known as Population III or Pop III stars) are being ejected from the cluster of their origin with the velocity exceeding their escape velocity. Hence there is possibility that some of these protostars can enter main sequence and survive till present epoch, even in Milky Way. We ask the question if the protostars can avoid core collapse, and stop accreting before being ejected from the cluster, with the final mass of stars as 0.8 Mȯ.

We investigate the stellar and dynamical mass profiles of 32 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs, MK = −25.7 to −27.8 mag) in massive clusters (0.05 < z < 0.30), and in particular the rising velocity dispersion profiles of 23 of these BCGs found in Loubser et al. (2018). We make comprehensive measurements of the Gauss-Hermite higher order velocity moments h3 and h4, and find positive central values for h4 for all the BCGs. We model the stellar and dynamical mass profiles of 25 of the BCGs using the Multi-Gaussian Expansion (MGE) and Jeans Anisotropic Method (JAM) for an axisymmetric case, deriving the stellar mass-to-light ratio (ϒ*DYN), and anisotropy (βz). We further explicitly add a dark matter halo mass component (MDM within r200) which we constrain from weak lensing results. In this proceedings, we summarise the study and show an example of the results.

In order to understand the progenitor of rotation powered pulsars, we compare them with High-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) pulsars, (or X-ray pulsars), in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The plot of period period vs. period derivative shows that isolated neutron stars could be evolved from HMXBs. The pulsars with long spin period might spin up to 0.001-1 s. The mechanism is a third-body interaction that detaches the donor, leaving an isolated, small period neutron star behind.

Globular clusters (GCs) display anomalous light-elements abundances (HeCNONaMgAl), resembling the yields of hot-hydrogen burning, but there is no consensus yet on the origin of these ubiquitous multiple populations. We present a model in which a super-massive star (SMS, ≳103 M⊙) forms via stellar collisions during GC formation and pollutes the intra-cluster medium. The growth of the SMS finds a balance with the wind mass loss rate, such that the SMS can produce a significant fraction of the total GC mass in processed material, thereby overcoming the so-called mass-budget problem that plagues other models. Because of continuous rejuvenation, the SMS acts as a ‘conveyer-belt’ of hot-hydrogen burning yields with (relatively) low He abundances, in agreement with empirical constraints. Additionally, the amount of processed material per unit of GC mass correlates with GC mass, addressing the specific mass budget problem. We discuss uncertainties and tests of this new self-enrichment scenario.

Here we present a systematic analysis of the mid-infrared properties of young radio galaxies, based on lower-resolution data provided by WISE and IRAS satellites. We restrict our analysis to sources in the earliest phase of radio galaxy evolution, with corresponding ages of the radio structures ≤ 3,000 yrs. In our sample of 29 objects, we find a variety of WISE colors, which suggests that the mid-infrared continua of studied sources are not exclusively contributed to by the circumnuclear dust. A comparison of the total mid-infrared and absorption-corrected X-ray luminosities for our sample reveals a clear correlation between the two bands. This favors the scenario in which the observed X-ray emission of young radio galaxies — at least the high-luminosity ones — originates predominantly in accretion disk corona.
