In the Galaxy there are 67 Be X-ray binaries known to-date. Out of those, 45 host a neutron star, and for the reminder the nature of a companion is not known. None, so far, is known to host a black hole. This disparity is referred to as a missing Be – black hole X-ray binary problem. The stellar population synthesis calculations following the formation of Be X-ray binaries (Belczyński & Ziółkowski 2009) predict that the ratio of the binaries with neutron stars to the ones with black holes is rather high FNS/BH ~ 30–50. A comparison of this ratio with the number of confirmed Be – neutron star X-ray binaries (45) indicates that the expected number of Be – black hole X-ray binaries is of the order of only ~0–2. This is entirely consistent with the observed Galactic sample. Therefore, there is no problem of the missing Be+BH X-Ray Binaries for the Galaxy

In the Magellanic Clouds there are 94 Be X-ray binaries known to-date. Out of those, 60 host a neutron star. Again, none hosts a black hole. The stellar population synthesis calculations carried out specifically for the Magellanic Clouds (Ziółkowski & Belczyński 2010) predict that the ratio of the Be X-ray binaries with neutron stars to the ones with black holes is only FNS/BH ~ 10. This value is rather too low, as it implies the expected number of Be+BH X-ray binaries of the order of ~6, while none is observed. We found, that to remove the discrepancy, one has to take into account a different history of the star formation rate in the Magellanic Clouds, with the respect to the Galaxy. New stellar population synthesis calculations are currently being carried out.

We present here and overview of the results of a systematic search of Type-I X-ray bursts in the light curves of the transient, atoll system 4U 1608–522 as seen by JEMX onboard INTEGRAL.

The recent years witnessed a dramatic improvement in our knowledge of the phenomenology and physics of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). However, our “pillars of knowledge” remain a few, while many aspects remain obscure and not understood. There is no general agreement on the radiation mechanism of the prompt emission, nor on the process able to convert the bulk motion of the fireball into random energy of the emitting leptons. The afterglow phase can now be studied at very early phases, showing an unforeseen phenomenology, still to be understood. In this context, the detection of ~GeV emission from ~10% of GRBs, made possible by the Fermi satellite, can hopefully shed light on some controversial issues.

The correlations between the rest frame peak of the νFν spectrum of GRBs (Epeak) and their isotropic energy (Eiso) or luminosity (Liso) could have several implications for the understanding of the GRB prompt emission. These correlations are presently founded on the time–averaged spectral properties of a sample of 95 bursts, with measured redshifts, collected by different instruments in the last 13 years (pre–Fermi). One still open issue is wether these correlations have a physical origin or are due to instrumental selection effects. By studying 10 long and 14 short GRBs detected by Fermi we find that a strong time–resolved correlation between Epeak and the luminosity Liso is present within individual GRBs and that it is consistent with the time–integrated correlation. This result is a direct proof of the existence in both short and long GRBs of a similar physical link between the hardness and the luminosity which is not due to instrumental selection effects. The origin of the Epeak – Liso correlation should be searched in the radiation mechanism of the prompt emission.

Both types of long and short gamma ray bursts involve a stage of a hyper-Eddington accretion of hot and dense plasma torus onto a newly born black hole. The prompt gamma ray emission originates in jets at some distance from this ‘central engine’ and in most events is rapidly variable, having a form of sipkes and subpulses. This indicates at the variable nature of the engine itself, for which a plausible mechanism is an internal instability in the accreting flow. We solve numerically the structure and evolution of the neutrino-cooled torus. We take into account the detailed treatment of the microphysics in the nuclear equation of state that includes the neutrino trapping effect. The models are calculated for both Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes. We find that for sufficiently large accretion rates (>~10M⊙ s−1 for non-rotating black hole, and >~1M⊙ s−1 for rotating black hole, depending on its spin), the inner regions of the disk become opaque, while the helium nuclei are being photodissociated. The sudden change of pressure in this region leads to the development of a viscous and thermal instability, and the neutrino pressure acts similarly to the radiation pressure in sub-Eddington disks. In the case of rapidly rotating black holes, the instability is enhanced and appears for much lower accretion rates. We also find the important and possibly further destabilizing role of the energy transfer from the rotating black hole to the torus via the magnetic coupling.

Recent PIC simulations of relativistic electron-positron (electron-ion) jets injected into a stationary medium show that particle acceleration occurs in the shocked regions. Simulations show that the Weibel instability is responsible for generating and amplifying highly nonuniform, small-scale magnetic fields and for particle acceleration. These magnetic fields contribute to the electron's transverse deflection behind the shock. The “jitter” radiation from deflected electrons in turbulent magnetic fields has different properties from synchrotron radiation calculated in a uniform magnetic field. This jitter radiation may be important for understanding the complex time evolution and/or spectral structure of gamma-ray bursts, relativistic jets in general, and supernova remnants. In order to calculate radiation from first principles and go beyond the standard synchrotron model, we have used PIC simulations. We will present detailed spectra for conditions relevant to various astrophysical sites of collisionless shock formation. In particular we will discuss application to GRBs and SNRs.

Using the RMHD code MRGENESIS and the radiative transfer code SPEV we compute multiwavelength afterglow light curves of magnetized ejecta of gamma-ray bursts interacting with a uniform circumburst medium. We are interested in the emission from the reverse shock when ejecta magnetization varies from σ0 = 0 to σ0 = 1. For typical parameters of the ejecta, the emission from the reverse shock peaks for magnetization σ0 ~ 0.01 − 0.1, and is suppressed for higher σ0. We fit the early afterglow light curves of GRB 990123 and 090102 and discuss the possible magnetization of the outflows of these bursts. Finally we discuss the amount energy left in the magnetic field which is available for dissipation at later afterglow stages.

Several statistical studies - done also by the authors of this contribution - show that there are three subclasses of gamma-ray bursts. They can be called as short, intermediate and long ones, because they can be separated with respect to their durations. The short and intermediate bursts are distributed anisotropically on the sky. This behavior is highly remarkable, and can have a cardinal impact on the cosmology. The subject of this contribution is a survey of this topic.

The formation of low mass stars takes place with the assistance of an accretion disk that transports gas and dust from the envelope of the system to the star, and a jet that removes angular momentum and allows accretion to proceed. In the radio, these ionized jets can be studied very close to the star via the thermal (free-free) emission they produce and at larger scales by the molecular outflows that result from their interaction with the surrounding medium. Is the same disk-jet process responsible for the formation of massive stars? I will review recent evidence for the presence of collimated jets and accretion disks in association with forming massive stars. The jets in massive protostars have large velocities that could produce a synchrotron component and I discuss the evidence for the presence of this non-thermal process in the jet associated with the HH 80-81 system.

The key characteristics of molecular and atomic ejection from young stars are summarized, with emphasis on similarities across evolutionary stages, and the need for efficient magnetic collimation and ejection extracting a large fraction of the accretion power. The jet kinematics, and its dust and molecular content, are confronted to steady MHD jet models, and the probable contribution of non-steady processes is pointed out.

Jet formation MHD simulations are presented considering a variety of model setups. The first approach investigates the interrelation between the disk magnetisation profile and jet collimation. Our results suggest (and quantify) that outflows launched from a very concentrated region at the inner disk tend to be weakly collimated. In the second approach, jet formation is investigated from a magnetic field configuration consisting of a stellar dipole superposed by a strong disk field. We find that the central dipole considerably de-collimates the disk wind. In addition, reconnection flares are launched in the interaction region of disk and stellar magnetic field, subsequently changing the outflow mass flux by factors of two. The time interval between flare ejection is about 1000 Keplerian periods - surprisingly similar to the observed time lag between jet knots. The third approach considers radiative pressure effects on jet collimation - an environment which is interesting mainly for outflows from massive young stars (but also for relativistic jets). Finally we present relativistic MHD simulations of jet formation from accretion disks extenting the previous non-relativistic approaches.

Two-dimensional emission line images of the HH30 jet were recently used (De Colle et al. 2010) to recover the three-dimensional structure of the jet by applying standard tomographic technique (“Tikhonov regularization techniques”). In this paper I show that it is possible to determine the ejection history of the HH30 jet by directly comparing the outcome of numerical simulations with the results of the tomographic inversion. In particular, it is shown that the HH30 jet electron density map is best reproduced by assuming a velocity variation at the base of the jet with a large scale periodicity (with a period of ~3 yrs) added to small scales velocity variation (with periods ≲months).

Recently it has become apparent that proto-stellar-like outflow activity extends to the brown dwarf (BD) mass regime. While the presence of accretion appears to be the common ingredient in all objects known to drive jets fundamental questions remain unanswered. The more prominent being the exact mechanism by which jets are launched, and whether this mechanism remains universal among such a diversity of sources and scales. To address these questions we have been investigating outflow activity in a sample of protostellar objects that differ considerably in mass and mass accretion rate. Central to this is our study of brown dwarf jets. To date Classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) have offered us the best touchstone for decoding the launching mechanism. Here we shall summarise what is understood so far of BD jets and the important constraints observations can place on models. We will focus on the comparison between jets driven by objects with central mass <0.1M⊙ and those driven by CTTSs. In particular we wish to understand how the the ratio of the mass outflow to accretion rate compares to what has been measured for CTTSs.

In this study, we present the results from 3D simulations in which a side-streaming motion pushes the post-bow shock into direct contact with the jet beam. This is a possible mechanism for modeling well collimated molecular jets as an atomic/ionic flow which entrains molecules initially present only in the surrounding environment.

Within the framework of laboratory astrophysics, we form a qualified multidisciplinary group in radiative hydrodynamics. Since 10 years, we have developed laboratory experiments as radiative shocks and plasma jets in connection to astrophysics. Such laboratory experiments provide a unique opportunity to validate models and numerical schemes introduced in radiative hydrodynamics codes. Here we summarize our experimental researches about plasma jets. Laboratory astrophysical experiments have been performed using LULI2000 (France), VULCAN (UK) and GEKKO XII (Japan) intense lasers. The goal of these experiments is to investigate some of the complex features of jets from Young Stellar Objects (YSO), and in particular its interaction with the interstellar medium (ISM).

T Tauri stars are low mass, pre-main sequence stars. These objects are surrounded by an accretion disk and present strong magnetic activity. T Tauri stars are copious emitters of X-ray emission which belong to powerful magnetic reconnection events. Strong magnetospheric shocks are likely outcome of massive reconnection. Such shocks can accelerate particles up to relativistic energies through Fermi mechanism. We present a model for the high-energy radiation produced in the environment of T Tauri stars. We aim at determining whether this emission is detectable. If so, the T Tauri stars should be very nearby.

Massive protostars have associated bipolar outflows which can produce strong shocks when interact with the surrounding medium. Some theoretical models predict that particle acceleration at relativistic velocities can occur leading to gamma ray emission. In order to identify young stellar objects (YSO) that might emit gamma rays, we have crossed the Fermi First Year Catalog with catalogs of known YSOs, obtaining a set of candidates by spatial correlation. We have conducted Montecarlo simulations to find the probability of chance coincidence. Our results indicate that ~70% of the candidates should be gamma-ray sources with a confidence of ~5σ.

We show that low mass accreting T Tauri stars may have a strong stellar jet component which can effectively brake the star to the observed rotation speed. By means of meridional self similarity, we construct semi analytical solutions describing the complete dynamics and topology of the stellar component of the jet emerging from the corona of the star. We show two typical solutions with the same mass loss rate but different magnetic lever arms and jet radius, corresponding to differente phases of T Tauri star activity.

The MHD simulations of stellar jets recently included complex models of radiative emission computation, allowing for better predictions in terms of emission line ratios. Employing also Adaptive Mesh Refinement, the large-scale propagation of jets could be followed. The simulation of multiple shockwaves originating in perturbations close to the jet origin and travelling along the jet beam allows for the construction of synthetic emission maps at various wavelengths, to be directly compared to observations. We apply this procedure for the jets originating from RW Aurigae.

This paper reports the discovery and presents the results of a first analysis of the observed morphology of a candidate external irradiated circumstellar disk/jet system found in the deep core of Trumpler 14, a cluster an order of magnitude more massive than the only cluster where bona-fide proplyds have been found, the Trapezium cluster in the Orion Nebula.
