Ammonium manganese phosphate monohydrate (NH4MnPO4.H2O) has been investigated by means of X-ray powder diffraction. The title compound is orthorhombic with unit-cell parameters a=5.7289(11), b=8.8167 (12), and c=4.9098 (8) Å.

A simple device was developed for a moisture-proof X-ray diffraction analysis. The device consists of a simple plastic ring where one side was glued on with a thin film to let in the X-ray beam and the other side was covered with grease to seal onto a base plate. This device was later optimized by selecting a good adhesive to glue on the film, a very effective film to minimize the moisture intake, and an optimum ring height to maximize the X-ray intensity. Finally, this simple device was successfully verified that it can protect the anhydrous CaCl2 (hydrophilite) up to 4 days in ambient air.

A Bi2O3 compound which is unknown to date has been synthesized at 800 °C on a BeO substrate. α-Bi2O3 at 800 °C undergoes a phase transition to a metastable new compound named ω-Bi2O3 which in turn transforms to stable δ-Bi2O3 at 900 °C. X-ray powder diffraction data were collected, indexed, and refined in order to obtain a unit cell (probable space group P1¯: a=7.2688(4), b=8.6390(6), c=11.9698(8) Å, α=87.713(6), β=93.227(6), γ =86.653(4)°. This compound is of interest for the thick films circuits and sensors technology.

Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data was performed on SmBa4Cu3O8.5+δ, which was synthesized from precursors Sm2O3, BaO2, and CuO at 1000 °C in an oxygen atmosphere. SmBa4Cu3O8.5+δ has a cubic perovskite-related structure that is isostructural with YBa4Cu3O8.5+δ, and a doubled perovskite unit cell parameter of 8.177 90±0.000 04 Å.

X-ray powder data are given for glucopyranosylsorbitol, C12H24O11, and glucopyranosylmannitol dihydrate, C12H24O11 * 2H2O. Refined unit cell parameters for glucopyranosylsorbitol are: a=0.9124(4) nm, b=1.1336(5) nm, c=0.7232(3) nm, and β=91.23(4)° in space group P21 and those for glucopyranosylmannitol dihydrate are a=2.2579(15) nm, b=1.0016(5) nm, and c=0.7584(5) nm in space group P212121.

New ternary compounds of Ca14Al10Zn6O35 and Ca3Al4ZnO10 compositions have been synthesized in the CaO–Al2O3–ZnO system. Single crystals of the new compounds have been grown, and crystal structures and crystallochemical properties were established. The phenomenon of heterovalence isomorphous statistical substitution of aluminium for zinc in alumino-oxygen tetrahedra has been established. It is now possible to synthesize a large group of new ternary compounds, the compositions of which are similar to that of spinels. A comparison of X-ray powder diffraction and electron probe microanalyses on samples of Na- and K-doped Bi4V2O11 (BIMEVOX) solid electrolytes indicates some of the problems associated with using XRD to assess phase purity, especially in materials of variable composition such as BIMEVOXes. In this study both the Na- and K-doped materials appeared phase pure by XRD. EPMA indicated the Na-doped materials to be single phase with their expected compositions while the K-containing materials were not phase pure with very little K present in the main BIMEVOX phase.

Samples of airborne particulate were collected at the “El Ingenio” site in Castellón (Spain) using a cascade impactor sampler. Quantitative analysis of present phases in the aerosol was performed using the full-pattern fitting Rietveld method. Quantitative information was obtained from refined individual scale factors and unit-cell volumes, obtained with a Rietveld refinement program. Quartz, calcite, and gypsum were encountered as major phases, and their size distribution and concentration in the atmosphere were calculated.

A significant feature of the atomic structure of the intermetallic compounds RhAl2.63 (Pearson-Parthé symbol cP(34-5) [notation according to Parthé et al. (1993)], space group P23), IrAl2.75 (cP(34-4), P23) and AuZn3 (cP32, Pm3¯n) is the occurrence of icosahedral clusters. Least squares refined lattice parameters and powder diffraction data are reported for these homeotypic phases.

Indexed X-ray powder diffraction data are reported for the low temperature tetragonal ZrO2 obtained by crystallization of zirconia gel. The structure was refined by the Rietveld technique on the basis of space group P42/nmc. Refined unit cell dimensions are a = 3.5984(5) Å, c = 5.152(1) Å, V = 66.71 Å3, Dx=6.135 g/cm3, F18=62 (0.012, 24), RP=8.99, Rwp=11.48, RB=3.13.

The crystal structure of cobalt(II) acetate tetrahydrate, Co(C2H3O2)·4H2O, has been refined using single-crystal, laboratory powder, and synchrotron powder diffraction data, both individually and in various combinations. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c, with a=4.80688(3), b=11.92012(7), c=8.45992(5) Å, β=94.3416(4)° at 27 °C, and Z=2. The crystal structure consists of discrete centrosymmetric trans-Co(C2H3O2)(H2O)4 complexes, linked by a three-dimensional network of hydrogen bonds. Each complex participates in 14 hydrogen bonds, 12 intermolecular, and 2 intramolecular. Compared to the single-crystal refinement, refinement of laboratory powder data yielded an average difference in bond distances of 0.02 Å, in bond angles of 3°, and in root mean square atomic displacements of 0.07 Å. The standard uncertainties of the bond distances were 0.01 Å, compared to the 0.001–0.002 Å in the single-crystal refinement. Refinement of the synchrotron powder data yielded improved accuracy and precision. It proved impossible to locate or refine hydrogen positions using a single-powder dataset, but the hydrogens could be refined using rigid groups in a joint refinement of the two powder datasets. Even from powder refinements, it is possible to obtain suitable accuracy and precision to distinguish C–O and C=O bonds, and to examine details of chemical bonding.

The anhydrous and hydrated lithium monoborates have been studied. The most hydrated phase is LiBO2·8H2O; its structural formula in the P3 space group is Li(H2O)4B(OH)4·2H2O. Refinement of the cell parameters yielded the following results: a=6.5483(5) Å, c=6.1692(7) Å with F(30)=64(0.015, 32), Z=1, and Dx=1.402 g/cm3. This phase gives LiB(OH)4 by spontaneous dehydration. An X-ray powder diffraction study of LiB(OH)4 as a function of temperature indicated three poorly crystallized hydrates. Two of these hydrates have the formula LiBO2·0.3H2O; the other, LiBO2·xH2O, has an undetermined water content. Crystal data for α-LiBO2 have been obtained: a=5.8473(10) Å, b=4.3513(6) Å, c=6.4557(10) Å, β=115.08(1)°, F(27)=58.5(0.001, 41); space group P21/c, Z=4, and Dx=2.18 g/cm3. β-LiBO2 does not exist but corresponds to the α-LiBO2 form observed at 600 °C. Numerous other LiBO2 forms reported recently have not been found.

Standardized experimental and calculated X-ray powder diffraction data for a new synthetic zeolite, cesium titanium silicate, CsTiSi2O6.5, are reported. In addition, a structure model in space group Ia3d (230), which is isomorphous with the mineral pollucite (CsAlSi2O6·xH2O), is proposed for CsTiSi2O6.5. This structure model is the basis of the reported calculated X-ray powder diffraction data for CsTiSi2O6.5. The experimental pattern for CsTiSi2O6.5 shows this compound crystallizes in a body-centered cubic (BCC) unit cell with a=13.8423 (1) Å. The measured value of the reference intensity ratio (I/Ic) of CsTiSi2O6.5 is 2.37, while the contrasting calculated value of I/Ic is 4.45. The experimental density (Dm) of CsTiSi2O6.5 is 3.48±0.09 g/cm3, in agreement with the calculated density (Dx) of 3.42 g/cm3. Chemical analysis of CsTiSi2O6.5 by atomic absorption spectroscopy gives its composition as 54±2 wt% Cs; 23±2 wt% Ti; 23±2 wt% Si, which compares favorably with the theoretical composition of 56 wt% Cs; 20 wt% Ti; 24 wt% Si.

In this paper we propose a fitting procedure to describe the bandpass effect on all x radiation that passes through a focusing graphite monochromator used on the diffracted beam. The proposed bandpass function is: M(2θ)=1/(1+Kmon1sKmon2), with s=(2 sin θ)/λ, where Kmon1 and Kmon2 are constants which have been refined by means of a Rietveld analysis, using a physically modeled background (Riello et al., J. Appl. Crystallogr. 28, 115–120). We have investigated two polycrystalline powders: α-Al2O3 and a mixture of α and β-Si3N4. The so-obtained bandpass functions for these materials are close enough to conclude that they depend only on the used experimental setup (in the present case the X-Pert-Philips diffractometer with a graphite focusing monochromator). Knowledge of the bandpass function is important to suitably model the Compton scattering, which is a component of the background scattering. The present procedure allows one to avoid the direct experimental determination of the bandpass function, which requires the use of another monochromator (analyzer) and another tube with an intense white spectrum.

New powder X-ray diffraction data of davyne, a member of the cancrinite group of minerals, were collected using a rotating anode diffractometer: the hexagonal cell parameters are a=12.6711(3) Å, c=5.3278(2) Å, volume 740.82(4) Å3 (space group P63). The strongest lines are: 3.658(100), 4.790(73), 3.272(70), 2.112(48), 2.438(22), 2.663(19), 1.781(19), and 4.147(17). The new data provide quantitative intensities improved precision in d-spacings and cover an increased 2θ angular range with respect to PDF 20-379. Measured intensities and a simulated pattern are reported together with crystal-chemical considerations.

X-ray powder diffraction data of CoSi are reported. The sample was prepared by an arc melting process and has a cubic structure (space group P213, space group No. 198) with lattice parameter a=4.4427 Å, Dx=6.591 gcm−3, Z=4, and I/Ic=1.03.

A new phase in the system BaO-MnO-SiO2 obtained by a pyrosynthetic method has been investigated using selected area electron diffraction (SAED), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and X-ray powder diffraction. The lattice parameters and a possible space group of the phase with a general composition BaMnSiO4 were determined as follows: a=5.370(2), b=18.447(7), c=8.498(5) Å, Z=8, Space Group Pmc21.

X-ray powder diffraction data of BaFCl are reported for 2θ from 5° to 150° at 25 °C. Strain-free and dendrite-free single crystals of BaFCl, grown by flux method with KCl as flux, were powdered for recording this data. BaFCl is tetragonal, space group P4/nmm, with a=4.3964(1) Å and c=7.2315(3) Å.

A Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction data for orthorhombic BaNd2Mn2O7 is reported. The refined lattice parameters were a=0.5517(5), b=0.5482(3), and c=2.0585(7) nm with space group Fmmm (No. 69).

A nonlinear optical material, o–chlorobenzol–benzoyl thiourea (C14H11ClN2OS), has been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. Experimental values of 2θ corrected for systematic errors, relative peak intensities, values of d, and the Miller indices of 78 observed reflection with 2θ up to 72° are reported. The powder diffraction data have been evaluated, and the figures-of-merit are reported. The unit cell parameters least-squares refined from 28 nonoverlapping peaks of the monoclinic compound with a P2 space group are a=13.2797(4) Å, b=12.4058(8) Å, c=8.1561(2) Å, β=95.398(1)°, V=1337.7(4) Å3, Z=4, Dx=1.444 g/cm3. © 1997 International Centre for Diffraction Data.
