The crystal structure of eltrombopag olamine Form I has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional techniques. Eltrombopag olamine crystallizes in the space group P21/n (#14) with a = 17.65884(13), b = 7.55980(2), c = 22.02908(16) Å, β = 105.8749(4)°, V = 2828.665(11) Å3, and Z = 4. The crystal structure is dominated by columns of hydrogen-bonded cations and anions along the short b-axis. van der Waals interactions bind the columns together. Two H atoms of each ammonium group in the ethanolammonium cations participate in strong hydrogen bonds, and the third H forms weaker bifurcated H-bonds. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD® for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

Tungsten (W) films have many applications in the semiconducting industry for sensor technology. Deposition conditions can significantly impact the resulting W films in terms of the phases present (α-BCC or β-A12), microstructural grain orientation (texture), and residual strain. Tilt-A-Whirl methodology has been employed for the evaluation of a W film showing both texture and residual strain. Sin2(ψ) analysis of the film was performed to quantify the strongly tensile in-plane strain (+0.476%) with an estimated in-plane tensile stress of ~1.9 GPa. The 3D dataset was also evaluated qualitatively via 3D visualization. Visualization of 3D texture/strain data poses challenges due to peak broadening resulting from defocusing of the beam at high ψ tilt angles. To address this issue, principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to diagnose, model, and remove the broadening component from the diffraction data. Evaluation of the raw data and subsequent corrected data (after removal of defocusing effects) has been performed through projection of the data into a virtual 3D environment (via CAD2VR software) to qualitatively detect the impact of residual strain on the observed pole figure.

Ag3O was synthesized by jet-milling magnetron-sputtered Ag–Ag2O thin films. Heating the jet-milled powders in air and N2 from 40 to 148 °C at ambient pressure produced Ag3O-rich powders. The phase composition and unit-cell parameters of the jet-milled powders were measured as a function of temperature with in situ X-ray powder diffraction experiments from −186 to 293 °C. Ag3O was also produced by ball milling and sonicating jet-milled films at ambient conditions. The phase composition, unit-cell parameters, and thermal-reaction rates indicate nonstoichiometric Ag3O was produced from the reaction of metastable, nonstoichiometric Ag2O (cuprite structure) and ccp Ag. The thermal expansion of Ag3O is anisotropic; below 25 °C, the a-axis expansion is about twice the c-axis expansion resulting in a negative slope of c/a(T). The reversal of the sign of c/a(T) near 25 °C is dramatic. The thermal reaction is arrested when the temperature is rapidly increased from ambient to 130 °C. Ag3O is metastable and decreases its unit-cell volume during kinetic decomposition to Ag when heated above ambient temperature in air and nitrogen. The relative volume expansion of Ag3O is about 80% less than Ag at room temperature and below. The suite of nonstoichiometric Ag3O produced by heating displays a linear relation between c/a and unit-cell volume at room temperature. The c/a and unit-cell volume of a hydrothermally grown Ag3O single crystal reported in a published structure determination was the Ag-rich, low-volume end member of the linear series. The c/a and unit-cell volume are sensitive indicators of the oxygen content and state of disorder.

The application of continuous-scan integration to collect X-ray diffraction data with a Si strip X-ray detector (CSI-SSXD) introduces additional effects on the peak shift and deformation of peak shape caused by the equatorial aberration. A deconvolutional method to correct the effects of equatorial aberration in CSI-SSXD data is proposed in this study. There are four critical angles related to the effects of spillover of the incident X-ray beam from the specimen face in the CSI-SSXD data. Exact values of cumulants of the equatorial aberration function are efficiently evaluated by 4 × 4 point two-dimensional Gauss–Legendre integral. A naïve two-step deconvolutional method has been applied to remove the effects of the first and third-order cumulants of the equatorial aberration function from the observed CSI-SSXD data. The performance of the algorithm has been tested by analyses of CSI-SSXD data of three LaB6 powder specimens with the widths of 20, 10, and 5 mm, collected with a diffractometer with the goniometer radius of 150 mm.

The Schiff base N1,N2-di(2-hydroxy)benzylidenebenzene-1,2-di-imine was prepared from salicylaldehyde and 1,2-diaminobenzene by reflux in ethanol for 6 h obtaining an orange crystalline solid. The Schiff base solid was separated by filtration and washed with ethanol and ethylic ether, and finally, it was dried in a vacuum system for 2 h. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern for this new compound showed that the crystalline compound belongs to the monoclinic system and space group P21/c (No. 14) with refined unit-cell parameters a = 5.9672 (7) Å, b = 16.561 (1) Å, c = 16.337 (2) Å, β = 91.41° (1). The volume of the unit cell is V = 1614.1 (2) Å3.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters and space group for 2-(ethylamino)-2-(3-methoxyphenyl)cyclohexan-1-one hydrochloride, C15H22ClNO2, are reported [a = 8.574(2) Å, b = 9.943(2) Å, c = 8.774(1) Å, β = 100.294(3)°, unit-cell volume V = 736(1) Å3, Z = 2, and space-group P21]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21 space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

1-N-(4-pyridylmethyl)amino naphtalene was synthesized by means of a reaction of alpha-naphthylamine, 4-pyridylcarboxyaldehyde, in anhydrous ethanol to obtainN-(4-pyridylen)-alpha-naphthylamine and that was reduced with NaBH4 to produce the wanted compound. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern for the new compound 1-N-(4-pyrydylmethyl)amino naphtalene was obtained. This compound crystallizes in a monoclinic system with refined unit cell parameters a=10.375(5) Å, b=17.665(6) Å, c=5.566(2) Å, β=100.11(3), and V=1004.3(5) Å3, with space group P2/m (No. 10).

Single crystals of Sm0.55Sr0.45Mn0.4Fe0.6O3 were grown by an optical floating zone technique in an oxygen atmosphere. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern for the grown crystal revealed single-crystalline nature. The lattice parameters and atomic structure were refined and indexed using a General Structure Analysis System (GSAS) to an orthorhombic structure with lattice parameters a = 5.4415 (32) Å, b = 7.6994 (27) Å, c = 5.43868 (28) Å, and space group Pnma.

A commercial Empyrean X-ray diffractometer was adapted for combined grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence analysis (GIXRF) measurements with X-ray reflectivity (XRR) measurements. An energy-dispersive silicon drift detector was mounted and integrated in the angle-dependent data acquisition of the Empyrean. Different monochromator/X-ray optics units have been compared with the values obtained by the Atominstitut GIXRF + XRR spectrometer. Data evaluation was performed by JGIXA, a special software for combined GIXRF + XRR data fitting, developed at Atominstitut. A sample consisting of a ~50 nm nickel layer on a silicon substrate was used to compare the performance criteria (i.e. divergence and intensity) of the incident beam optics. An Empyrean X-ray diffractometer was successfully refitted to measure both GIXRF and XRR data.

History of the development of the reciprocal lattice is reviewed. The reciprocal lattice as an essential tool for the study of diffraction experiments by ordered structures and characterization of their structural properties is widely taught in any text of solid state or chemistry, but usually without discussion of its history. This article aims to give a coherent historical perspective on the reciprocal lattice. First, a basic introduction to the reciprocal lattice concept, its mathematical foundation and physical origin, and its relationship with the direct lattice is provided. Then a detailed chronicle of ideas leading to the concept of the reciprocal lattice is presented, including a review of the contributions of Gibbs, Ewald, and others. The polar lattice concept, the great ancestor of the reciprocal lattice, is presented.

Pinaverium bromide (C26H41Br2NO4) is an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) usually prescribed for the relief of spasm and functional gastrointestinal disorders. This work reports its powder diffraction data, Raman and FT-IR spectroscopy and thermal characterization. Indexing of the powder diffraction pattern showed this material crystallizes in a monoclinic unit cell with a = 16.00(4) Å, b = 8.901(2) Å, c = 19.225(4) Å, β = 98.68(3)°, and V = 2808.2(6) Å3.

Single crystals of Cs3A[B2(SCN)7] with A = Sr, Ba and B = Ag, Cu have been synthesized from aqueous solutions by the evaporation method. The complex thiocyanates are isostructural and crystallize in the tetragonal system with space group .

Complete crystal data and optical data for the four compounds are reported. An X-ray powder diffraction pattern for Cs3Sr[Cu2(SCN)7] is given.

Methods using X-ray fluorescence have been developed to identify cometary material captured in aerogel during the NASA Stardust mission to Comet 81P/Wild 2. These analytical methods are necessitated by the levels of trace contaminants present in the aerogel. The cometary material disaggregates during deceleration in the aerogel, so fluorescence mapping of the entire track (which can be several millimeters long) is necessary. Distinguishing those pixels which have cometary material and aerogel from those which have only cometary material can be very challenging. We have chosen a “dual threshold” method, with some pixels clearly having only aerogel (plus contaminants) and other pixels clearly having cometary and aerogel material. Between these two threshold levels is a set of pixels which cannot be easily ascribed to one or the other. By leaving these pixels out of the analysis, the estimate of cometary material is improved.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters and space group for a rare natural organic mineral refikite, C20H32O2, abiet-13(15)-en-18-oic acid, are reported [a = 22.55(2) Å, b = 10.469(6) Å, c = 7.930(9) Å, unit-cell volume V = 1871.82 Å3, Z = 4 and space group P21212]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21212 space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

X-ray powder diffraction data for the high temperature phase of NaBi3V2O10 obtained from in situ high temperature XRD studies are presented. NaBi3V2O10 undergoes a phase transition from triclinic to monoclinic at about 600 °C. The unit cell parameters of the high temperature monoclinic phase at 600 °C are: a=12.3899(21), b=5.5642(10), c=7.1543(18) Å and β=98.393(16)°, V=487.94(13) Å3 and Z=2, ρcal=6.20 g∕cc. On further increasing the temperature, it partially decomposes to a γ-Bi4V2O11 type phase. The details of this phase as well as the stability of NaBi3V2O10 are discussed.

The N-benzyl-6-chloro-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivative (chemical formula: C24H24ClNO) was obtained from cationic imino Diels–Alder reaction catalyzed by BF3.OEt2. Molecular characterization was performed by 1H and 13C NMR, Fourier transform-infrared and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) pattern for the new compound was analyzed and found to be crystallized in an orthorhombic system with space group Fdd2 (No. 43) and refined unit-cell parameters a = 33.053(7) Å, b = 41.558(9) Å, c = 5.841(1) Å and V = 8023(2) Å3.
