The crystal structure of a new polymorph of germacrone has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional theory techniques. This polymorph (Form II) crystallizes in space group C2/c (#15) with a = 26.0073(4), b = 9.84383(10), c = 10.53713(13) Å, β = 95.7547(11)°, V = 2684.04(3) Å3, and Z = 8. The crystal structure is dominated by van der Waals interactions, but four C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds are present. The structure exhibits many similarities to the previously reported Form I polymorph FIQLOG, but is clearly different. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF).

The crystal structure of pomalidomide Form I has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Pomalidomide Form I crystallizes in the space group P-1 (#2) with a = 7.04742(9), b = 7.89103(27), c = 11.3106(6) Å, α = 73.2499(13), β = 80.9198(9), γ = 88.5969(6)°, V = 594.618(8) Å3, and Z = 2. The crystal structure is characterized by the parallel stacking of planes parallel to the bc-plane. Hydrogen bonds link the molecules into double layers also parallel to the bc-plane. Each of the amine hydrogen atoms acts as a donor to a carbonyl group in an N–H⋯O hydrogen bond, but only two of the four carbonyl groups act as acceptors in such hydrogen bonds. Other carbonyl groups participate in C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD® for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

An incident beam X-ray collimator for Mao-Bell type diamond anvil cell (DAC) has been developed. Alignment of the collimator is carried out in situ while viewing the image of the collimated X-ray spot formed on a thin layer of fluorescent material spread on the diamond anvil culets with the help of a microscope. Special precaution has been taken to meet the radiation safety requirements during alignment and routine use. This collimator is of immense help for laboratory based high pressure X-ray diffraction experiments.

A new cobalt molybdate with the formula NaCo2OH(H2O)(MoO4)2 was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction at 200 °C and was found to possess the Φx type structure. The crystalline system of this material is monoclinic and its cell parameters are a=9.3792 (2), b=6.3331 (1), c=7.6281 (2) Å and β=115.832°, obeying the C2/m space group symmetry.

Wolfeite (Fe0.59Mn0.40Mg0.01)2PO4(OH) from the Hagendorf-Sud pegmatite, Bavaria, Federal Republic of Germany, yields unit-cell parameters of: a = 12.319(1), b = 13.280(2), c = 9.840(1) Å and β = 108° 24(1). Dmeas. = 3.82(2); Dcalc. = 3.88. An indexed powder diffraction pattern is given.

The X-ray powder diffraction patterns for two N-substituted tetrahydroquinolines are reported. N-(α-Chloroacetyl)-6-methoxy-3,4-dihydro-4-methylspiro[cyclohexane-1′,2(1H)quinoline], C18H24ClNO2, and N-(α-chloroacetyl)-6-chloro-3,4-dihydro-4-methylspiro[cyclohexane-1′,2(1H)-quinoline], C17H21Cl2NO are monoclinic, with refined unit cell parameters a=1.4471(3), b=0.9600(4), c=1.1948(3) nm, β=93.21(2)°, V=1.6573(6) nm3, Z=4, Dx=1.29 gcm−3, and a=1.4487(3), b=0.9878(2), c=1.1390(2) nm, β=91.66(2)°, V=1.6294(4) nm3, Z=4, and Dx=1.32 gcm−3, respectively, with space group P21/n (No. 14).

New phosphates Ca9–xPbxEu(PO4)7 were obtained by solid state reaction techniques at 1213–1253 K in air atmosphere and were found to be isotypic with whitlockite-type β-Ca3(PO4)2. The unit cell parameters were determinate using Le Bail decomposition. Rietveld method structural refining showed that Eu3+ ions are located statistically with calcium in M1, M2, and M3 sites, whereas Pb2+-ions are preferentially located in the M3. Examination of optical second harmonic generation evidences nonlinear optical activity and confirms polar space group R3c.

The crystal structure of vardenafil hydrochloride trihydrate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Vardenafil hydrochloride trihydrate crystallizes in space group C2/c (#15) with a = 34.78347(16), b = 11.56752(4), c = 14.69308(5) Å, β = 93.3410(4), V = 5901.839(30) Å3, and Z = 8. The fused ring system and the phenyl ring are nearly co-planar; the interplanar angle between them is 6.0°. Two intramolecular hydrogen bonds help determine this conformation. These planes stack along the c-axis. The side chains of these ring systems have a large Uiso and are neighbors in the stacks. Along the a-axis, these stacks are separated by hydrophilic layers of chloride, water molecules, and the positively charged nitrogen atoms of the vardenafil cation. Hydrogen bonds are prominent in the crystal structure. The protonated nitrogen atom forms a strong hydrogen bond to the chloride anion. The water molecules form a hexagon, making hydrogen bonds with themselves, as well as the C1 and a ring nitrogen atom. These discrete hydrogen bonds form a cluster, and there is no extended hydrogen bond network. There are many C–H⋯Cl, C–H⋯O, and C–H⋯N hydrogen bonds, which (although individually weak) contribute significantly to the crystal energy. The crystal structure of ziprasidone hydrochloride monohydrate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Ziprasidone hydrochloride monohydrate crystallizes in space group P-1 (#2) with a = 7.250 10(3), b = 10.986 66(8), c = 14.071 87(14) Å, α = 83.4310(4), β = 80.5931(6), γ = 87.1437(6)°, V = 1098.00(1) Å3, and Z = 2. The ziprasidone conformation in the solid state is very close to the minimum energy conformation. The positively-charged nitrogen in the ziprasidone makes a strong hydrogen bond with the chloride anion. The water molecule makes two weaker bonds to the chloride, and acts as an acceptor in an N–H⋯O hydrogen bond. The powder pattern is included in the Powder Diffraction File™ as entry 00-064-1492.

The 6,8-dimethyl-cis-2-vinyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-benzo[b]azepin-4-ol (2a) (Chemical formula C14H19NO) and 8-chloro-9-methyl-cis-2-(prop-1-en-2-yl)-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1H-benzo[b]azepin-4-ol (2b) (Chemical formula C14H18ClNO) were prepared via the reductive cleavage of the bridged N-O bond of the corresponding 1,4-epoxytetrahydro-1-benzazepines. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns for the new compounds were obtained. The compound 2a was found to crystallize in an orthorhombic system with space group Pmn21 (No. 31), refined unit-cell parameters a = 19.422(6) Å, b = 6.512(3) Å, c = 9.757(4) Å and V = 1234.0(5) Å3. The compound 2b was found to crystallize in a monoclinic system with space group P21/m (No. 11), refined unit-cell parameters a = 17.570(4) Å, b = 8.952(3) Å, c = 14.985(4) Å, β = 101.66(2)°, and V = 2308.3(9) Å3.

Seven isotopic molybdates MIIUMo4O16 have been synthesized by solid state reaction with MII = Mg, Mn, Cd, Ca, Hg, Sr, Pb. Single crystals of CaUMo4O16 were obtained. Previously reported as triclinic, this compound is monoclinic, space group P2/n. Unit-cell parameters for the seven compounds are:

MgUMo4O16: a = 11.393(2), b = 6.505(1), c = 7.918(2) Å, β = 89.81(3)°, V = 586.8(5) Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 5.12 Mg m−3;

MnUMo4O16: a = 11.413(2), b = 6.555(1), c = 8.023(1) Å, β = 89.86(2)°, V = 600.2(4)Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 5.18 Mg m−3;

CdUMo4O16: a = 11.427(2), b = 6.607(1), c = 8.144(2) Å3, β = 90.40(2)°, V = 614.8(5)Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 5.37 Mg m−3;

CaUMo4O16: a = 11.443(3), b = 6.653(2), c = 8.239(2)Å, β = 90.51(3)°, V = 627.2(6)Å3, Z = 2, Dm = 4.83(5), Dx = 4.88 Mg m−3;

HgUMo4O16: a = 11.439(3), b = 6.643(1), c = 8.257(2)Å, β = 90.53(3)°, V = 627.4(6)Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 5.73 Mg m−3;

SrUMo4O16: 11.465(3), b = 6.768(2), c = 8.492(2) Å, β = 90.86(3)°, V = 658.8(6)Å3, Z = 2, Dx = 4.88 Mg m−3;

PbUMo4O16: a = 11.470(4), b = 6.813(2), c = 8.557(2)Å, β = 90.88(4)°, V = 668.7(8)Å3, Dx = 5.41 Mg m−3;

Powder diffraction data for each phase are reported.

X-ray powder diffraction data for 1-(4-Nitrophenyl)-2-piperidinone, C11H12N2O3, are reported [a = 9.514(3) Å, b = 12.308(6) Å, c = 9.175(1) Å, α = 90°, β = 91.811(2)°, γ = 90°, V = 1073.94 Å3, Z = 4, ρcal = 1.362 g cm−3 and space group P21/n]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21/n space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

The “hook effect” observed in the Warren-Averbach analysis of X-ray diffraction peaks from multiple layer thin films of copper has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. The strengths of the “hook effect” for films of different layer thicknesses were analyzed. The results showed definite correlation between the strengths of the “hook effect” and the grain size distributions in 1, 4, and 19-layer copper films.
