The structure of two biomimetic copper complexes bis[4-benzylaldimino-3-methyl-1-phenyl-5-thio (seleno)pyrazolato]copper(II)—36 32N6X2Cu (where X=S, Se) have been studied and X-ray patterns of these compounds have been prepared using the Rietveld refinement technique. Both complexes crystallized in a monoclinic lattice, space group-C2/c(15). The unit-cell parameters are a=28.917(3) Å; b=7.000(2) Å; c=17.550(4) Å; β=106.869(1) (1) for C36H32CuN6S2 and a=29.126(6) Å; b=7.042(4) Å; c=17.228(2) Å; β=105.587(2) for C36H32CuN6Se2. Analysis of the copper and selenium K-edge X-ray absorption spectra (EXAFS) of these complexes show that a copper atom is in pseudo-tetrahedric ligand environment N2X2 with typical Cu–N bonds (R=2.00–2.01 Å) and significantly different Cu–S and Cu–Se bonds (R=2.27 Å and R=2.41 Å, respectively) because of different sulfur and selenium ion radii. © 2004 International Centre for Diffraction Data.

Structure and optical properties have been successfully determined for a series of niobium- and tantalum-containing layered alkaline-earth silicate compounds, Ba3(Nb6−xTax)Si4O26 (x = 0.6, 1.8, 3.0, 4.2, 5.4). The structure of this solid solution was found to be hexagonal P-62m (No. 189), with Z = 1. With x increases from 0.6 to 5.4, the lattice parameter a increases from 8.98804(8) to 9.00565(9) Å and c decreases from 7.83721(10) to 7.75212(12) Å. As a result, the volume decreases from 548.304(11) to 544.479(14) Å3. The (Nb/Ta)O6 distorted octahedra form continuous chains along the c-axis. These (Nb/Ta)O6 chains are in turn linked with the Si2O7 groups to form distorted pentagonal channels in which Ba ions were found. These Ba2+ ions have full occupancy and a 13-fold coordination environment with neighboring oxygen sites. Another salient feature of the structure is the linear Si–O–Si chains. When x in Ba3(Nb6−xTax)Si4O26 increases, the bond valence sum (BVS) values of the Ba sites increase slightly (2.09–2.20), indicating the size of the cage becoming progressively smaller (over-bonding). While SiO cages are also slightly smaller than ideal (BVS range from 4.16 to 4.19), the (Nb/Ta)O6 octahedral cages are slightly larger than ideal (BVS range from 4.87 to 4.90), giving rise to an under-bonding situation. The bandgaps of the solid solution members were measured between 3.39 and 3.59 eV, and the x = 3.0 member was modeled by density functional theory techniques to be 3.07 eV. The bandgaps of these materials indicate that they are potential candidates for ultraviolet photocatalyst.

A new organic–inorganic hybrid lithium m-phenylenediamine sulfate (LPS), Li2(C6H10N2)(SO4)2, was synthesized under aqueous solution conditions. The X-ray powder diffraction study determined that the title compound crystallized in a monoclinic system at 300 K, with unit-cell parameters a = 7.8689(6) Å, b = 6.6353(5) Å, c = 11.8322(10) Å, β = 109.385(3) °, V = 582.77(8) Å3. Indexing of the diffraction patterns collected from 100 to 600 K reveals that LPS has no structural phase transition within the measured temperature range, and the volume expansion coefficient is approximately 2.79 × 10−5 K−1. The crystal structure was solved based on the single-crystal diffraction data with space group P21/m. Lithium and SO42− are found to form quasi-two-dimensional anti-fluorite [LiSO4] layers stacking along the c-axis, with m-phenylenediamine molecules inserted in the anti-fluorite layers and forming hydrogen bonds to the SO42−. This explains a moderate anisotropic expansion in LPS.

The U.S. National Committee for Crystallography (USNC/Cr) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine provided an online workshop series for researchers on the use, development, and maintenance of crystallographic and structural databases in the Spring of 2022. Encompassing macromolecular, small molecule, and powder diffraction information, the series included 11 modules each meeting for 1 or 2 days. Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty members and researchers in any of the crystallographic, diffraction, and imaging sciences affiliated with the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) were encouraged to register and participate in the training sessions that interest them.

The crystal structure of the potassium salt of raltegravir has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Raltegravir potassium crystallizes in space group P21/c (#14) with a = 15.610 59(9), b = 8.148 19(3), c = 16.125 97(6) Å, β = 94.1848(5)°, V = 2045.72(1) Å3, and Z = 4. The most prominent feature of the crystal structure is the chains of edge-sharing 7-coordinate KO5N2 parallel to the b-axis. The crystal structure can be described as having K-containing layers in the bc-plane, with double layers of CH4F halfway between them. The raltegravir anion is not in the minimum-energy conformation, suggesting that coordination to the K and hydrogen bonds play a significant role in the solid-state structure. The crystal structure of meglumine diatrizoate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Meglumine diatrizoate crystallizes in space group P21 (#4) with a = 10.74697(4), b = 6.49364(2), c = 18.52774(7) Å, β = 90.2263(3), V = 1292.985(5) Å3, and Z = 2. Two different crystal structures, which yielded essentially identical refinement residuals and positions of the non-H atoms, were obtained. The differences were in the H atom positions and the hydrogen bonding. One structure was 123.0 kJ/mol/cell lower in energy than the other and was adopted for the final description. The crystal structure consists of alternating double layers of cations and anions along the c-axis. The hydrogen bonds link the cations and anions into a three-dimensional framework. Each of the hydrogen atoms on the ammonium nitrogen of the cation acts as a donor in a strong N–H⋯O hydrogen bond. One of these is to a hydroxyl group of another cation, and the other is to the carboxylate group of the anion. Each of the amide nitrogen atoms of the anion forms a strong N–H⋯O intermolecular hydrogen bond, one to a carbonyl and the other to a carboxylate group. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a diuretic used for the treatment of blood pressure (hypertension). HCTZ has two anhydrous polymorphs denoted as Forms I and II. Aiming at solid-state characterization, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) is known to be a powerful technique which has been successfully applied in investigating polymorphism in medicines. In this work, three tablets of HCTZ (a reference and two generic) were analyzed. The data were collected using Rigaku RINT2000 diffractometer copper rotate anode. The Rietveld method (RM) was applied for the characterization of HCTZ polymorphic form. For the crystalline excipients where the crystal structure is known, their phases were identified by the RM either. The results showed that all the tablets exhibit Form I of HCTZ, while the excipient lactose monohydrate is found to exhibit the crystalline form. One of the generics is also found to exhibit the excipient sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in the crystalline form. Therefore, the RM and XRPD are an efficient methodology for characterization of the crystalline Form I of the active principle of HCTZ and crystalline excipients lactose monohydrate and SLS in solid formulations. It is also interesting to observe excipients not described in the package insert of the medicament.

Eight phosphates and arsenates of manganese have been synthesized and examined using powder X-ray diffraction in order to update or extend the current powder diffraction data files. The studied compounds are MnPO4·H2O, MnAsO4·H2O, LiMnPO4(OH) LiMnAsO4(OH), LiMnAsO4, Mn2As2O7) MnAsO4, and Mn(PO3)3. The powder patterns have been indexed and the cell data are reported.

Pb0.88 Ln 0.08TiO3 ferroelectric system, where Ln = La, Sm, Eu, and Dy, has been characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction experiments. Softening of the lowest transverse optical phonon mode E (1TO) was evaluated as a function of the rare earths’ ionic radius suggesting partial occupation of lanthanide ions at the A and B sites of the perovskite structure. Using Rietveld refinements, it has been established a higher incorporation of Ln3+ ions into the A sites of the perovskite structure than that of the B sites for the studied ceramics. The occupation at B sites increases slightly with the decreases of the ionic radii of the lanthanides.

CdTe nanorods and various branched nanostructures with different crystal structures were have successfully prepared via the catalyst-assisted vacuum thermal evaporation (CVTE) technique using various experimental parameters. SEM and XRD studies were carried out on the as-prepared CdTe nanostructures. The results show that the morphologies and crystal structures of the products were strongly influenced by the growth conditions and the mole ratios of Bi and CdTe. In the high mole ratio (0.08:1) of Bi and CdTe, CdTe branched nanostructures of CdTe were obtained, while nanorods of CdTe were formed at a lower mole ratio of 0.05:1. The crystal structure of products is either Zinc blende or a two-phase mixture of zinc blende and wurtzite. The content of the wurtzite phase were found to increase with increasing growth temperature. Our results also reveal that high growth temperature tends to form the wurtzite phase, and stacking faults may exist in materials grown in higher temperatures. These nanostructures grow following the vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) mechanism.

Single crystals of Sm0.55Sr0.45Mn0.4Fe0.6O3 were grown by an optical floating zone technique in an oxygen atmosphere. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern for the grown crystal revealed single-crystalline nature. The lattice parameters and atomic structure were refined and indexed using a General Structure Analysis System (GSAS) to an orthorhombic structure with lattice parameters a = 5.4415 (32) Å, b = 7.6994 (27) Å, c = 5.43868 (28) Å, and space group Pnma.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters and space group for 2-(ethylamino)-2-(3-methoxyphenyl)cyclohexan-1-one hydrochloride, C15H22ClNO2, are reported [a = 8.574(2) Å, b = 9.943(2) Å, c = 8.774(1) Å, β = 100.294(3)°, unit-cell volume V = 736(1) Å3, Z = 2, and space-group P21]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21 space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

The Schiff base N1,N2-di(2-hydroxy)benzylidenebenzene-1,2-di-imine was prepared from salicylaldehyde and 1,2-diaminobenzene by reflux in ethanol for 6 h obtaining an orange crystalline solid. The Schiff base solid was separated by filtration and washed with ethanol and ethylic ether, and finally, it was dried in a vacuum system for 2 h. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern for this new compound showed that the crystalline compound belongs to the monoclinic system and space group P21/c (No. 14) with refined unit-cell parameters a = 5.9672 (7) Å, b = 16.561 (1) Å, c = 16.337 (2) Å, β = 91.41° (1). The volume of the unit cell is V = 1614.1 (2) Å3.

The crystal structure of edoxaban tosylate monohydrate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Edoxaban tosylate monohydrate crystallizes in space group P21 (#4) with a = 7.55097(2), b = 7.09010(2), c = 32.80420(21) Å, β = 96.6720(3)°, V = 1744.348(6) Å3, and Z = 2. The crystal structure consists of alternating layers of edoxaban cations and tosylate anions along the c-axis. The water molecules lie near the sulfonate end of the tosylate anions. The solid-state conformation of the edoxaban cation is determined by intermolecular interactions. The protonated nitrogen atom forms a strong N–H⋯O hydrogen bond to one of the tosylate oxygens. Only one of the water molecule hydrogens acts as a donor in an O–H⋯O hydrogen bond. The tosylate oxygens act as acceptors in a number of C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD® for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™.

Tungsten (W) films have many applications in the semiconducting industry for sensor technology. Deposition conditions can significantly impact the resulting W films in terms of the phases present (α-BCC or β-A12), microstructural grain orientation (texture), and residual strain. Tilt-A-Whirl methodology has been employed for the evaluation of a W film showing both texture and residual strain. Sin2(ψ) analysis of the film was performed to quantify the strongly tensile in-plane strain (+0.476%) with an estimated in-plane tensile stress of ~1.9 GPa. The 3D dataset was also evaluated qualitatively via 3D visualization. Visualization of 3D texture/strain data poses challenges due to peak broadening resulting from defocusing of the beam at high ψ tilt angles. To address this issue, principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to diagnose, model, and remove the broadening component from the diffraction data. Evaluation of the raw data and subsequent corrected data (after removal of defocusing effects) has been performed through projection of the data into a virtual 3D environment (via CAD2VR software) to qualitatively detect the impact of residual strain on the observed pole figure.

The crystal structure of tamsulosin hydrochloride has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data and optimized using density functional techniques. Tamsulosin hydrochloride crystallizes in space group P21 (#4) with a = 7.62988(2), b = 9.27652(2), c = 31.84996(12) Å, β = 93.2221(2)°, V = 2250.734(7) Å3, and Z = 4. In the crystal structure, two arene rings are connected by a carbon chain oriented roughly parallel to the c-axis. The crystal structure is characterized by two slabs of tamsulosin hydrochloride molecules perpendicular to the c-axis. As expected, each of the hydrogens on the protonated nitrogen atoms makes a strong hydrogen bond to one of the chloride anions. The result is to link the cations and anions into columns along the b-axis. One hydrogen atom of each sulfonamide group also makes a hydrogen bond to a chloride anion. The other hydrogen atom of each sulfonamide group forms bifurcated hydrogen bonds to two ether oxygen atoms. The powder pattern is included in the Powder Diffraction File™ as entry 00-065-1415.
