The opening of Trajan's reign saw the propagation in Italy of a system of government alimenta or subsistence payments, which had perhaps been begun by his predecessor, Nerva. Their immediate purpose was clearly the support of children in the small inland towns of Italy at which units of the scheme were mainly concentrated. Male recipients of the alimentary dole were given a cash payment of HS16 per month; girls received HS12 per month, the amounts given to illegitimate children being somewhat lower for both sexes. Hadrian laid down that boys who benefited were to be given support until the age of 18, and girls until 14; under Trajan, the ages at which support ceased had presumably been lower. The scheme was financed by grants from the fiscus which were placed with landowners in the districts in which children were to be supported. In general, each landowner who took part in the loans received a sum amounting to about 8% of the stated value of his land, and had to pay to the city interest of 5% per year, which formed the income from which the children were supported.

Coinage remains one of the best resources from which to gain an insight into the public image of empresses in the Roman Empire. This article employs a quantitative approach to the coinage of the Severan women, utilizing coin hoards to gain an idea of the frequency of particular coin types. The result offers a nuanced and contextual assessment of the differing public images of the Severan empresses and their role within wider Severan ideology. Evidence is presented to suggest that in this period there was one workshop at the mint dedicated to striking coins for the empresses. The Severan women played a key connective role in the dynasty, a position communicated publicly through their respective numismatic images. By examining the dynasty as a whole, subtle changes in image from empress to empress and from reign to reign can be identified. During the reign of Elagabalus, the divergence in imagery between Julia Soaemias and Julia Maesa is so great that we can perhaps see the influence of these women on their own numismatic image.

The frontier between Gubbio (ancient Umbria) and Perugia (ancient Etruria), in the northeast part of the modern region of Umbria, was founded in the late sixth century bc. The frontier endured in different forms, most notably in the late antique and medieval periods, as well as fleetingly in 1944, and is fossilized today in the local government boundaries. Archaeological, documentary and philological evidence are brought together to investigate different scales of time that vary from millennia to single days in the representation of a frontier that captured a watershed of geological origins. The foundation of the frontier appears to have been a product of the active agency of the Etruscans, who projected new settlements across the Tiber in the course of the sixth century bc, protected at the outer limit of their territory by the naturally defended farmstead of Col di Marzo. The immediate environs of the ancient abbey of Montelabate have been studied intensively by targeted, systematic and geophysical survey in conjunction with excavation, work that is still in progress. An overview of the development of the frontier is presented here, employing the data currently available.

Bucchero is a type of Etruscan pottery which is black, both on the surface and in the core. There are many different shades of grey to black which are still considered to be bucchero, but in all cases the core of the pottery must be ‘reduced.’ The process was discovered by the Etruscans, and gave rise to one of the most characteristic products of their culture.

Bucchero varies enormously from period to period, from place to place. In this paper the period to be covered is approximately 650–600 B.C., during which the forms of bucchero sottile were established and developed in southern Etruria. The origins of these forms will also be sought in earlier periods, chiefly from the late eighth century onwards. The bucchero pesante of the sixth century, and later types continuing in the fifth, will not be considered here.

Il secolo dopo la chiusura del Concilio di Trento (1545–63) è stato a lungo associato con iniziative papali ad ampio raggio finalizzate allo standardizzare della liturgia e il rito. A partire dalla revisione del Breviario Romano (1568), questo processo di profonde riforme, che toccò ogni aspetto del rituale e del credo Cattolico Romano, venne affidato nel 1588 alla Sacra Congregazione dei Riti e delle Cerimonie appena fondata. Queste furono, tuttavia, canonizzazioni di ‘nuovo tipo’ nelle quali la prova di santità fu esaminata con un rigore moralistico di un livello sconosciuto precedentemente, in tal modo la canonizzazione divenne un istituto più frequente anche se più difficile da ottenere. L'articolo si propone quindi di esaminare il modo in cui la procedura riformata di canonizzazione si fece strumento della politica papale in vista della standardizzazione del rito avviata a partire dalla riforma del Breviario Romano. Si tenta ciò ricostruendo il tentativo non riuscito di una canonizzazione durante questo periodo cruciale per la storia della procedura; un esercizio che rivela forse in maniera più evidente rispetto ad altri casi maggiormente riusciti, le politiche e i desiderata di santità della chiesa Tridentina.

The Via Herculia is known as such solely through inscriptions. Their distribution, near Ariano Irpino, Monteleone di Puglia, Zungoli, Vallesaccarda, Melfi, Lavello, Venosa, Castel Lagopesole, Sala Consilina, and Marsico Nuovo, indicates that the road followed a route from somewhere near Ariano Irpino at least as far as Grumentum, by way of Venosa and Potenza. Their contents show that it was made a via publica by the time of Diocletian and Maximian Herculius (hence, probably, the name Via Herculia), was repaired and restored by Maxentius in 311 (which might argue for an original construction fairly early in the reigns of Diocletian and Maximian), and continued to be maintained by Constantine, Flavius Victor, Jovian, and Theodosius and Arcadius. It is clear that it was an important road in the Late Empire as a centrally located north-south highway through the rugged terrain of south Italy.

Some uncertainty exists, however, about its precise location. Several different routes have been posited by various authorities, who have in most cases tried to utilise the evidence of the ancient sources so as to make the highway follow one or another passage through the mountains.

The modern town of Sutri lies 50 km. north of Rome, beside the Via Cassia, on the site of the ancient Sutrium (pl. X, a, b). It was already in existence in Etruscan times, passed to the Romans at the beginning of the fourth century b.c., was twice colonised by them and reached a peak of prosperity under the early Empire. It continued to flourish in the early Middle Ages, but a rapid decline set in after the fourteenth century and the town to-day is comparatively modest and unimportant.

The following report is concerned mainly with the ancient town and with a typical area of the surrounding countryside (7 km. × 12 km. in extent), as it was in Etruscan and Roman times (fig. 1, p. 64). It is chiefly a record of the archaeological remains found in the area during five months' fieldwork in the winter and spring, 1957–1958, undertaken as part of the British School's current programme of survey in southern Etruria, which is designed to record permanently such remains before they disappear for ever, as they are fast doing.

The antiquities of the ancient town itself are already well known and have been described several times in the past. But, apart from occasional references to isolated finds and an attempt towards the end of the last century to map the ancient roads, the countryside outside the town has never been properly explored. The bulk of the original work, therefore, lies in sections III and IV. The Etruscan and the Roman roads have been located, as far as is possible, and all the sites which are still to be found have been recorded. In certain areas present-day woodland concealed a few, notably round the small town of Bassano di Sutri and towards the summit of M. Calvi, south of Sutri, and cultivation in the immediate vicinity of the modern towns may have destroyed a few more, especially near Ronciglione; but at the most it is probable that only about 20 sites were lost or missed in this way, as opposed to a total recorded of some 220. Except for woodland, all the ground within the limits of the area chosen was walked over and examined.

Rome's pre-Imperial circuit walls pose a particular problem of reconstruction: collectively, their 11 km course represents the largest single monument of the early city, but our understanding of this structure is based on an assemblage of several dozen disparate archaeological sites. After tracing the interpretation of these fragments from antiquity to the present, this article examines the literary, topographical and archaeological evidence for the wall's character and date. Ultimately, the non-archaeological data are inconclusive, and the material evidence seems to affirm an early phase (sixth century bc) focused on individual hilltops, rather than encompassing all hills within a full course. Following this logic, I continue to question the presence of a unified circuit wall at Rome prior to the mid-Republic (fourth century bc). A concluding section reviews the historical circumstances in support of this view.

L'argomento di questo articolo é il rapporto tra la cittá commerciale di Ancona e l'imperatore bizantino Manuel Komneno, espresso in una alleanza politico-militare durata dal 1155 al 1173. Si tenta di spiegare ció che una cittá italiana di media grandezza potesse rappresentare per Bisanzio nella sua ampia strategia di confronto con i Normanni di Sicilia e, piú tardi, con l'imperatore germanico Federico Barbarossa. I Bizantini non solo attribuirono grande importanza al loro simbolico « ritorno in Italia », ma usarono Ancona come base strategico-militare e come deposito di grandi quantitativi d'oro, col quale speravano di guadagnare alleati nell'Italia nord-rientale. Col miglioramento dei rapporti coi Normanni, Ancona non perse la sua importanza poiché era anche una leva contro i Veneziani, che Manuel Komneno vedeva con crescente ostilitá. La presenza di Costantino Donkas, dux della Dlmazia, ad Ancona nel 1173, sottolinea l'importanza che Ancona aveva in una piú ampia politica di espansione bizantina nell'Adriatico. Ancona, tuttavia, non fu posta sotto il governo diretto di Bisanzio, ma fu onorata dai Greci come cittá libera che era volontariamente entrata nell'orbita bizantina.

L'articolo esamina il fenomeno dell'imitazione dei tendaggi, o vela, che furono dipinti sui plinti delle mura delle chiese a Roma durante l'alto medioevo.
