Begun in 2009, the Roman Peasant Project was designed to excavate the smallest sites found in field survey and to analyse the diet, economies, land use and landscapes of the Roman peasant. The Project's excavations at the site of Pievina are presented here, and suggest a more complex image of Roman peasant life in the late Republic and late antiquity than current assumptions would anticipate, including surplus production, a high degree of monetization and ties to urban markets.

Negli ultimi quindici anni si è sviluppato un vivace dibattito sulla natura delle città nell'Italia settentrionale post-Romana. Tale discussione ha avuto luogo poichè resti di questo periodo rinvenuti in recenti scavi urbani si sono rivelati sistematicamente poco appariscenti. In questo articolo l'autore discute i principali articoli e libri — elencati e brevemente descritti in bibliografia — che hanno contribuito al dibattito. In particolare viene evidenziato che, sebbene gli studiosi tendono a giungere a conclusioni molto diverse su quanto ‘urbanizzate’ le città post-romane fossero, di fatto hanno molto in comune per quanto riguarda i dati specifici in discussione. L'autore ipotizza che la differenza nelle conclusioni raggiunte dagli studiosi è dovuta in gran parte alle diverse aspettative su cosa una ‘città’ dovrebbe essere. Tale divergenza è stata incoraggiata dalla natura molto diversa dell'evidenza materiale e dei testi scritti e dalle differenze in aspettativa tra romanisti e medievisti, tra autori italiani e britannici e tra storici ed archeologi. Le città dell'Italia post-romana si sono rivelate un vivace campo di battaglia nel più ampio dibattito sulla natura della ‘Dark Age’.

During the years 1895–6 the late H. Swainson Cowper visited the Tarhuna pleateau of Tripolitania and examined in considerable detail a large number of ancient sites. The results of this exploration, first published in the Antiquary, were later embodied in a monograph published in 1897. Cowper was not the first European to visit the ancient monuments of the Tarhuna region: he had been preceded by Smyth (1817), Barth (1850), Von Bary (1875), and Rohlfs (1879). His own work was more detailed, and geographically more concentrated, than that of his predecessors, and his publication, amply illustrated by photographs and drawings, remains to-day an indispensable companion for any investigator of ancient sites in the eastern Gebel.

Cowper's main thesis, which occupies a predominant place in his book, was that the trilithon-shaped ‘senams’ (arabic for ‘idols’) of the Tarhuna plateau were prehistoric monuments of a religious character. This conclusion was immediately challenged by Sir John Myres and the late Sir Arthur Evans, who demonstrated conclusively that these megalithic structures were in fact the frames of Roman olive-presses. In consequence general interest in the Tarhuna plateau declined, and even the researches of De Mathuisieulx (1901–4), which resulted in the discovery of the important neo Punic inscription of Ras el-Haddagia, failed to counterbalance the lost repute of the ‘senams’.

Questo studio si propone, attraverso calcoli idraulici, di stabilire il volume d'acqua distribuita dai quattro grandi acquedotti della Roma antica. L'essenza dell'argomento è la profondità dell'acqua in un canale aperto che cambia la sua larghezza e la cui pendenza varia in maniera complessa ma prevedibile. Dal momenta che l'ampiezza e la pendenza di alcuni punti degli acquedotti romani sembrano essere sufficientemente ben definite per permettre calcoli di questo tipo, ed inoltre in alcuni di questi casi anche l'altezza del canale è accessibile, un limite superiore può essere posto sullo scarico. Il risultato numerico più importante è che la distribuzione di questi quattro acquedotti era probabilmente di 7 m3 al secondo (600 000 m cubi al giorno).

I documenti iscritti (‘Acta’) della Confraternità degli Arvali a Roma sono tradizionalmente trattati come documenti rigidamente standardizzati. Questo studio offre una nuova analisi di questo materiale religioso e dimostra sia la differenza dei documenti scritti sia la loro (a volte strana) tendenza all'espansione nel periodo compreso tra il I secolo a.C. e il III secolo d.C. Queste due caratteristiche sono poi messe in relazione con la funzione dei documenti degli Arvali—che non sono, come in genere si pensa, una pratica fonte di riferimento per i preti, ma una convalida simbolica della loro attività rituale.

Questo progetto è diretto allo studio del paesaggio rurale intorno alla città di Rieti, nell'Italia centrale e in particolare si propone di esaminare, in un ampio fronte diacronico, il mutamento del modello insediamentale e i diversi modi di sfruttamento dell'alto bacino appenninico e delle colline e dei monti circostanti. Sono qui descritti gli scopi ed i metodi interdisciplinari del progetto e vengono riportati i principali risultati ottenuti. Lo studio degli aspetti geomorfologici ha giocato un ruolo importante nel progetto e i risultati sono presentati in due principali sezioni riguardanti una la natura dei suoli del bacino e l'altra i diversi modi della loro formazione. Il lavoro sul campo si è principalmente basato sulla ricognizione intensiva di una serie di transetti perpendicolari sul lato orientale del bacino montano di Rieti, estesa anche alle montagne circostanti. Nel corso di tre stagioni di lavoro, oltre 500 campi sono stati esaminati nell'ambito di un'area di circa 22 kmq., insieme con più ampie ricognizioni all'interno dell'intero bacino; tali ricognizioni sono state specificatamente finalizzate alla ricerca di dati che aiutassero a fornire risposte circa la problematica riguardante il mutare del quadro insediativo durante l'epoca medievale. Sono stati rinvenuti un totale di circa 200 siti di vario tipo ed epoca, sebbene si sia cercato di analizzare tali siti, durante le ricognizioni, nell'ambito dell'archeologia off-site. Le ricognizioni di particolari aree comprendenti un certo numero di siti con evidenti resti architettonici, sono state integrate con le evidenze portate alla superficie tramite l'aratura. Le ricognizioni miranti al rinvenimento di strutture sono risultate essere particolarmente positive, con l'individuazione di una serie di castelli e villaggi medievali, posizionati ad alte quote intorno al bacino. Durante tale progetto sono stati inoltre usati metodi geofisici di prospezione, compiendo ricognizione di resistività su larga scala per circa 20 siti: vengono qui riportati alcuni commenti preliminari sui risultati ottenuti grazie a questa tecnica. Il lavoro di tipo archeologico è stato accompagnato da una ricerca a carattere storico ed archivistico; l'articolo si conclude con una sintesi della storia insediamentale del bacino di Rieti per un periodo che va dall'età del bronzo all'età post-medievale.

This report details the survey, excavations and materials analysis carried out at Case Nuove (GR) in Tuscany, a site identified by surface survey as a possible rural house, but which excavation and materials analysis suggest was a small-scale agro-processing point of late Republican date. Through accompanying analysis of pollen and land-use data, the article considers the problems this type of site — the stand-alone agro-processing point — presents for interpretations of the Roman landscape.

The early history and development of the Roman road-system in Italy under the Republic has been the subject of much recent study, notably in a book by Dr. T. Pekáry of Berne and in a series of papers by Professor G. Radke of Berlin, who now promises an article on viae in a forthcoming supplement-volume to Paully-Wissowa. The aim of the present paper is to ask how far the theories put forward by these scholars can be accepted, and how much the existing evidence can and cannot tell us. Professor Radke's views are considered first—the basic criteria for his arguments in section I and the results he obtains for the individual roads in section II. Dr. Pekáry's arguments about the chronology of the early road programmes are examined in section III, and his theory about the financial responsibility for the building and repair of roads in section IV. The final section contains some positive, if tentative, suggestions about the development in scale and expense of the roads in the second century B.C., about the political importance of road-building under the Republic, and about the introduction and purpose of milestone inscriptions.

La tesi sostenuta in questo lavoro e' che il progetto del luglio del 54 a.C. per il quale Cicerone (Att. IV 16) usa l' Atrium Libertatis come punto di riferimento non ha nulla a che fare con il Forum Iulium, e che il nome ‘Tabularium’ è un termine improprio per il grande complesso repubblicano al di sotto del Palazzo Senatorio. Conseguenza di tale problema è che un edificio estremamente importante resta senza conosciuta localizzazione, e uno dei principali monumenti della Roma repubblicana senza un nome. Alcuni indizi portano ad ipotizzare che il Palazzo Senatorio possa in realtà essere identificato con l' Atrium Libertatis. Le conseguenze di questa ipotesi sulla topografia storica dei centri del governo romano vengono esaminate.

The notes that follow are the first results of a programme of field-survey undertaken by the writer and by various members of the British School during the autumn of 1954 in the area that lies immediately to the north of Rome, between the Tiber and the sea. This area is one that has been strangely neglected by modern students of Italian topography. Ashby's published work is concerned mainly with those parts of the Campagna that lie to the south and east of Rome; and Tomassetti's work, invaluable as a repertory of manuscript and published sources, lays no claim to be a comprehensive survey of the material remains surviving on the ground.

Such a survey is badly needed today. The romantic desolation of Southern Etruria is being transformed from one day to the next under the impact of a scheme of landreform comparable in scale to the great reforms of classical antiquity, and vast estates which for centuries have been used for stock-breeding and seasonal pasture are being broken up and brought into cultivation with all the devastating thoroughness that modern mechanical equipment entails. Whole regions are accessible today as they have never been before, and within them the bulldozer and the mechanical plough are busy destroying whatever lies in their path.

The subject of the arms and organisation of the Roman army in and before the mid-second century B.C. is one of almost inextricable confusion. The amount of weight to be put on the various contradictory pieces of literary evidence is still to a great extent uncertain: which of them are antiquarian reconstructions rather than genuine tradition, and if they are reconstructions, how intelligent are they and on what sort of evidence are they based? Archaeology does not give us all the help we might expect; too often its dates are imprecise, too often also we remain unclear whether a representation relates to the natives of the place where it was found, or whether it is meant to be realistic or idealising, which tends to mean archaising or hellinising. Literature and archaeology agree to make us believe that at some time in the archaic period the phalanx style of hoplite warfare was introduced to Rome, possibly from Etruria; some time between the early fourth and the mid-third century the manipular army developed out of it, tactically more flexible, armed with pila as throwing weapons and with swords, and bearing long shields, scuta or θνρϵοί (as opposed to the hoplites who had of course carried thrusting spears and circular clipei or ἀσπίδϵς). Probably general agreement has not been reached on much more than that. Any exact history of developments is probably quite unattainable; there may have been far more changes than scholars have been accustomed to reckon with, and several different weapons may sometimes have been in use simultaneously. Names may have changed in meaning over the years. The present paper is only designed to take up again several of the literary sources, and to attempt to reach some sort of conclusion as to their nature and reliability—chiefly on internal grounds, though with archaeological aid where this is possible.

In 1957 an archaeological field-survey revealed the presence of a Roman pottery near Sutri. It lay 1·8 km. to the north of the town on an isolated ridge of clay, about 800 m. east of the modern Sutri-Ronciglione road at point 713823 of the 1: 25,000 map of the Istituto Geografico Militare (Sheet ‘Ronciglione’) (fig. 1).

In August 1959, with the kind permission of the Soprintendenza alle Antichitá for Southern Etruria and with the help of half-a-dozen friends, to whom go my warm thanks, the site was partly excavated. The main object of the excavation was to recover, if possible, a closely dated pottery series which might be of use to other archaeologists excavating in central Italy. In this, despite the shallow depth of soil and effects of recent ploughing, the excavation was successful. A kiln was unearthed, a comprehensive range of the pottery's wares was recovered, and the main period of production was securely dated to the third quarter of the first century A.D.

‘In the name of God, amen. The notebook of Guido Filippi dell'Antella, in which he will set down certain memorials (ricordanze), beginning on the Kalends of March, in the year Mcclxxxxviii.’ These words form the perfunctory but typical heading of one of the first in a long and miscellaneous series of private memoirs which survive in such numbers from so many different families as to make it probable they were kept by every man of business or distinction in later medieval Florence. Every variety of information is contained in them, from business accounts and details of estate management to records of taxation, births, marriages and deaths, family feuds, and the dry record in certain instances of successful vendetta. Not all were simply domestic chronicles : the history of Florence, even at its most democratic, remains in large measure the history of its principal families, whose diaries therefore may be purely political. Even so, business and financial memoranda are normally present if not predominant in ricordanze, and for this reason they may represent the earliest and most simple type of book-keeping.
