The Liber pontificalis, the serial biography of the popes running from Saint Peter to the end of the ninth century, first compiled in Rome during the ‘Gothic Wars’ in the sixth century and continued at various stages in the next three centuries, offers a distinctive narrative of the history of Rome and of the papacy in the early Middle Ages. This paper argues that the seventh- and early eighth-century sections, too often simply mined for nuggets of information about church buildings, represent the pope in a particular way both in relation to Byzantium in theological and political terms, and as the successor to Saint Peter in Rome. The papal narrative undermines the usual assumptions about the so-called ‘Byzantine Reconquest’ and the Roman perception, if not the reality, of the degree to which ‘Byzantine rule’ was exercised in Italy between the middle of the sixth and first half of the eighth century. Lastly, these ‘continuations’ have important implications for any interpretation of the purpose and construction of the Liber pontificalis, and of its dissemination beyond Rome in the seventh and eighth centuries.

Le mura Leoniane furono costruite da Leone IV intorno alla zona Vaticano, dopo il saccheggio della basilica di S Pietro nel 846 d.C. da parte degli arabi. Nella Ia parte di questo articolo sono esaminate le fonti documentarie ed epigrafiche della costruzione delle mura, ed è descritta la conservazione e situazione topografica degli attuali resti archeologici. Nella IIa parte è pubblicata, con descrizione e disegni dettagliati, un tratto particolarmente ben conservato delle mura (ora nei Giardini Vaticani). Ed è anche discusso il problema di come fosse allo stato originale questo tratto di mura. Nella IIIa parte sono pubblicati in modo preliminare altri tratti ben conservati di opera leoniana: tutti fanno parte del cosiddetto ‘Passetto’ tra Castel S Angelo ed i Palazzi Vaticani. Gli archi (ora in gran parte murati) all'interno del Passetto sono sicuramente posteriori al nono secolo, mentre all'esterno delle mura, ad un livello più basso, sono conservati lunghi tratti di muratura leoniana (ed anche quattro torri). Nella IVa parte si hanno alcune considerazioni generali in base ai risultati fino ad ora ottenuti. In particolare, le Mura Leoniane vengono confrontate alle fortificazioni di Roma antica e si tenta di inquadrarle nella storia più ampia delle fortificazioni e della tecnica edilizia.

In questo secondo rapporto sugli scavi della Schola Praeconum in Palatino, gli AA. presentano materiali da due contesti tardo-antichi: SP I, un riempimento datato al periodo 430–440 c. e SP II, un' altero riempimento probabilmente databile ai primi decenni del VII secoto. Dal contesto SP I si presenta i vetri, i bolli laterizi, i semi e gli insetti; dal SP II, le monete, le ceramiche e le lucerne. Il materiale ceramico dal contesto SP II stimola alcune ipotesi sui rapporti commerciali di Roma nel VII secolo. Infine, due appendici presentano una discussione delle iscrizioni dipinte sulle anfore di argilla 14 e un' analisi del contenuto delle anfore importate da Bi e Gaza in Palestina.

La ricognizione e lo scavo dell'insediamento di San Marco rappresenta uno dei pochi esempi di studio interdisciplinare compiuti nell'Italia centrale e riguardante un sito neolitico. Sono stati studiati in maniera approfondita i vari aspetti geologici ed ambientali del sito, collocato su un conoide alluvionale. Sono state inoltre ottenute date al 14C, eseguite con l'AMS direttamente su materiali organici associati con la sussistenza umana, che hanno permesso di attribuire il sito ad una prima fase dell'età neolitica (fine del sesto-inizio del quinto millennio a.C, date calibrate). L'industria litica mostra una chiara continuità con la precedente tecnologia epipaleolitica, mentre le ceramiche rinvenute possono essere attribuite alle correnti stilistiche della Ceramica Impressa e a quella di Sasso-Fiorano. Le analisi dei prodotti di sussistenza (fauna e resti botanici) rivelano un'economia basata principalmente sull'agricoltura, integrata a sua volta con prodotti ottenuti tramite attività di caccia e raccolta.

Questo articolo è una dettagliata analisi e commento della documentazione storica risalente al primo medioevo di una piccola zona dell'Etruria meridionale (Tuscia Romana), in completamento alle perlustrazioni archeologiche della stessa zona effettuate dalla British School. Si concentra su una completa lista di chiese del XI secolo, aggiunte alla diocesi di Silva Candida; detta lista determina un territorio che comprende i villaggi moderni dell'Isola Farnese, Formello, Cesano, Sacrofano, Riano e Prima Porta (tutte nella provincia di Roma) e le zone limitrofe. Tale territorio è discusso accuratamente, zona per zona, ponendo l'attenzione su tutti gli insediamenti documentati in ciascuna zona nel primo medioevo, e collocandone la documentazione, dove possibile, nel materiale archeologico. Una di queste era il monastero di S Cornelio del XI secolo, che un tempo era lo chiesa demaniale della Pontificia domusculta Capracorum del VIII secolo, tuttavia non sembra essere stata tanto importante nell'organizzazione territoriale della Campagna Romana come comunemente si pensava. I villaggi medievali della Campagna si riteneva si fossero formati nel X secolo attraverso un processo di accentramento noto come incastellamento. Ciò risulta essere vero per il nostro territorio, ma non è stato possibile presumerlo, in base al fatto che nell'immediato nord di questo territorio molti castelli erano probabilmente già apparsi nel VII secolo. Nel ‘Latium’, Lazio ad oriente del Tevere, tale incastellamento era il lavoro di grandi proprietari terrieri; nella nostra regione non esistevano grandi possedimenti in mano di un unico proprietario e la formazione di villaggi ‘dall'alto’ sarebbe stata impossibile. Di conseguenza, l'incastellamento fu molto più lento e inconsistente; vicino all'Isola Farnese e Formello era completo dall'inizio del XI secolo; vicino a Sacrofano nel tardo XII secolo c'erano ancora insediamenti dispersi, intorno piccoli villaggi su promontori (ora inesistenti), vicino si trovava l'insediamento di S Cornelio che rimase disperso probabilmente fino ad oggi.

L'articolo si conclude con un tentativo di discussione sulle cause dell'incastellamento in questo territorio; una localizzazione politica può essere uno slancio molto più importante di una semplice difesa contro invasori armati.

The legal problem is easily posed. Gaius, in iii, 92–4, records that the making of an agreement by the use of the word spondeo, was confined to Roman citizens. The agreement which resulted from the use of the word, namely verborum obligatio or stipulatio, was apparently sanctioned by the Twelve Tables and may thus be regarded as forming part of the earliest Roman legal system. But Gaius goes on to record that his sources allowed one case when a foreigner might use the word spondeo, in the course of negotiations between a Roman general (for Gaius he was the Emperor) and a foreign princeps. Were Gaius' sources right? If they were, it is permissible to speculate on what lay behind the two usages. The conclusion of A. Magdelain is that the oral contract undertaken by the use of the word spondeo was religious in origin, that before the Twelve Tables it was backed up by an oath and that violation of this oath made a man sacer, effectively an outlaw who could be killed with impunity. Magdelain's thesis depends on accepting the premise that Livy's account of the disaster of the Caudine Forks, which involves a sponsio between a Roman and a non-Roman, is substantially true. V. Bellini, starting from the same premise, argues that a sponsio between a Roman commander and a foreign commander originally bound the Roman people and only gradually became subject to ratification at Rome.

The ancient coast road of Libya which runs close to the shore from Berenice (Benghasi) to Teuchira (Tocra) and Ptolemais (Tolmeita) later swings inland to reach Cyrene, and climbs to the second plateau of the Gebel Akhdar (some 500 metres above sea-level), which it reaches in the vicinity of Messa. From Messa eastwards the road can be traced without difficulty, in the form of a shallow cutting in the rock (probably of Greek origin), to Zavia Beda where the remains of the Roman town of Balagrae are still visible. On the Peutinger Map Balagrae is marked as 12 Roman miles from Cyrene, and this figure is accurate if one follows the course of the old road from Beda to the south gate of Cyrene. For its last three kilometres before reaching Cyrene, the ancient road is very clearly visible as a sunk track cut in the rock, with numerous wheel-ruts, and with ancient tombs flanking it. It is far from straight and makes several sharp bends, but there is no indication that Roman engineers attempted to eliminate these eccentricities when the road became one of the highways of the Empire.

Roman milestones previously found in the area of Cyrene have all come from the Cyrene—Apollonia road, and the Trajanic column which marked the first mile on that route was found in 1915 by Italian military engineers in the course of bringing back into use the long-abandoned Roman road, which descends the upper escarpment of the Gebel. The column is now in the Museum at Cyrene, but its exact original site can be identified from photographs taken at the time of its discovery: it stood a little east of the large circular tomb immediately below the gallery which now houses the greater part of the ancient sculpture from the Italian excavations.

It is a tendency of all great cities to possess two distinct and often independent sets of communications, the one for local, the other for long-distance traffic; and, unless a city has suddenly sprung into being, it will be found that, in order of development, the former precedes and is the germ of the latter. In the case of Rome, we are able to trace with remarkable clearness the successive stages of the development of the road system. The roads which, when this system had attained its perfection, we find radiating in all directions from the city, may be divided into two groups. The first of these, the local roads, take their name from the cities to which they lead; the second, the longdistance roads, from those who were chiefly responsible for their construction. All, however, must have originated as short-distance roads, leading to some town or other, and if we possessed sufficient information as to the spread of the Roman supremacy in Italy, we should be able to trace step by step the development of the long-distance roads from the local ones in every case. For the growth of the road system is intimately connected with the growth of the power of Rome. As soon as we are able to fix approximately the earliest bounds of her territory, we find her enclosed within very narrow limits. Except along the banks of the Tiber, her dominion extended hardly five miles from the city gates.

The article examines the population of the territory of Veii in the republican period. While the Roman conquest does not seem to have radically changed the Etruscan settlement pattern, perhaps leaving some of the former inhabitants on their lands, a much more serious break is detectable in the second century B.C., when there seems to have been a major economic and demographic crisis. This is not an isolated phenomenon, but one common to the territory along the Tiber, the west of Latium and the neighbourhood of Rome; it must be due to the upheavals initiated by the second Punic war and the unbalance caused in the region by the enormous political, demographic and economic growth of Rome. The late-republican territory of Veii looks like a depressed area, and shows no traces of the villa system of agricultural exploitation until the Augustan period.

Si sostiene che le corse dei cocchi a Roma fossero all'origine simili a quelle dell'Etruria, e la loro organizzazione e finanziamento seguissero modelli greci, con uomini importanti che correvano per proprio conto e vincevano ghirlande ed onori per se stessi. Dopo la pubblicazione delle XII Tavole, forse per motivi di povertà o per paura di individui potenti, Roma abbandonò questo sistema, e lo stato cominciò a pagare allevatori perchè fornissero cavalli per le corse; le famose 4 Fazioni o Colori possono essere sorti contemporaneamente all'avvento di questo nuovo sistema, o esserne stati una conseguenza. Probabilmente quando i premi divennero più consistenti furono gli allevatori a pagare lo stato per il diritto a competere. La gloria individuale a quel tempo era ottenuta presiedendo e finanziando i giuochi. Malgrado le testimonianze siano contraddittorie, sembra che i senatori potessero ottenere appalti per la fornitura di cavalli, almeno per alcune feste.

This committee was established in 1965 to serve as a centre for reference and for the exchange of information between all those persons and institutions who are concerned with the identification and study of the fine building stones and other decorative stones used in classical antiquity. It is sponsored by the International Association for Classical Archaeology, which in 1970/71 and again in 1971/72 has made a generous contribution towards its expenses. The committee's reference collection of quarry samples (see PBSR, xxxiv (1966), 79) is installed at the British School and growing satisfactorily, and several other projects are nearing completion. These include a survey of the Christian sarcophagi in the recently installed Museo Pio Cristiano, the former Lateran collections, now published in Repertorium der Christlich-Antiken Sarkophage ed. F. W. Deichmann, vol. i (1967), and another of the classical statuary currently on display in the Museum at Ostia.

The article that follows is the result of two years spent in Italy under a scholarship of the British School at Rome. The writer's original intention was to attempt a general study of ancient bridge-construction in Italy. It soon became obvious, however, that this was an almost impossible task, owing to the lack of adequately published material. On the great roads leading out of Rome, comparatively little original work has been done in the last thirty years; and if the destruction of ancient roads and of their attendant structures continues for much longer at the present rate, there will soon be little left to publish. The damage done during the late war was very considerable; and although a damaged bridge may in some ways be more rewarding than an intact one, a bridge that has been both damaged and reconstructed is of very little archaeological interest indeed.

For these reasons, it has seemed that the immediate need is not so much for a general work, which would necessarily be incomplete, as for a straight-forward description of the remains of bridges along some part of the ancient road-system of Italy, together with such comment as seems necessary to point out the problems involved.

Grazie alle fotografie scattate dalla Royal Air Force durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale nell'area del Tavoliere, in Puglia, fu registrata la presenza di tracce nelle piante coltivate dalle quali sono state ottenute un gran numero di informazioni di tipo archeologico. Ulteriori voli compiuti nel 1987 e nel 1989 dal Oberstleutnant O. Braasch, accompagnato sia dall'Autore che da altri, hanno dimostrato come ancora sia possibile utilizzare tale tecnica per l'individuazione di antiche tracce nelle piante coltivate, sempre in Puglia, nonostante i danni procurati fino ad oggi dai lavori agricoli eseguiti a partire dal periodo successivo alla guerra. Quest'articolo fornisce una serie di brevi informazioni circa 70 villaggi trincerati di tipo Neolitico osservati nel Tavoliere e nelle sue vicinanze, oltre che di altri 11 villaggi trincerati individuati più a Sud, vicino ad Altamura e a Matera. I siti di epoca romana individuati nel Tavoliere comprendono i resti di centuriazione oltre che dettagliate tracce appartenenti ad una villa e di trincee vicine a questa, scavate quasi sicuramente quando furono piantate delle viti. L'articolo considera la frequenza delle tracce nelle piante coltivate nell'Italia meridionale orientale e le loro relazioni con i terreni locali. Poiché tali tracce compaiono quasi esclusivamente su terreni particolarmente favorevoli, viene enfatizzata la necessità di prendere in considerazione anche le evidenze di carattere geologico e pedologico di una regione nei casi in cui venga studiata la distribuzione di siti individuati unicamente attraverso tracce nelle piante coltivate.

There is nothing surprising about the fact that coin hoards are among the commonest material remains of classical civilisation. In the absence of anything like modern bank accounts it was inconvenient to hold money except in the form of coin. The uncertainty of life in the ancient world is an adequate explanation in general terms of the loss of caches of money and hence of their survival to be discovered in modern times. But there are great fluctuations from one period to another in the numbers of hoards known to us and it should be possible to point to the circumstances which led in certain periods to an increase in the number of caches buried and not recovered by those who had deposited them.

A cache of money was doubtless only buried in exceptional circumstances. The normal place to keep money was in an arca, armarium, loculus or olla somewhere in the house. It was thus available for use as need or opportunity arose. Burial was only undertaken for special reasons, vel lucri causa vel metus vel custodiae. Plautus' Aulularia illustrates burial because of fear, his Trinummus burial for safe-keeping. Burial (as opposed to simple holding of money) for the sake of gain is hard to envisage. The parable of the talents in the New Testament explicitly rejects the idea. That it was abnormal to bury a cache of money appears also from the fact that most of the hoards which have been discovered were not associated with traces of habitation. The evidence of Plautus shows that burial indoors and burial out of doors were both possible. But hoards are only occasionally found during excavations of settlements and those that turn up casually do not often seem to be accompanied by remains of buildings.
