The key for conceptualizing both the Galatians' former pagan religion and an existence ‘under the Jewish law’ as ‘serving the στοιχεια’ (Gal 4.3, 9) lies in their characterization as ‘weak and impotent’ in Gal 4.9. As suggested by passages in the writings of Philo, the στοιχεια do not possess inherent creative power and thus are unable to solve the anthropological problem of sin. To overcome the passion of σαρξ, Philo suggests a process of forming and strengthening the immortal soul by way of the Mosaic law. Paul, by contrast, denies the renewing, life-giving power of the νομος and thus categorizes the law as στοιχεια του κοσμου.

In 1 Cor 10.14–22 Paul warns his readers to refrain from idolatry. In order to convince his readers he calls attention to the unity and solidarity which exist between worshippers of the same religion. In this context he uses the terms κοινωνία and κοινωνός (vv. 16, 18, and 20). In v. 17 Paul tells his readers that at their joint meals they are ‘partners’, this time expressed by the term μετέχειν. In the light of ancient parallels, it is concluded that the references to κοινωνία in v. 16 (cf. vv. 18 and 20) should be understood ecclesiologically, denoting ‘partnership’ rather than ‘participation’.

En 1514, le premier N.T. grec imprimé sortait des presses à Alcala. En 1516, Froben et Erasme publiaient, à Bâle, le second N.T. grec imprimé. La critique textuelle moderne et contemporaine du N.T. est donc une personne vénérable qui célèbre son quatre-cent-cinquantième anniversaire. A cette occasion, je voudrais vous proposer, à la lumière d'un bref bilan du passé, quelques réflexions sur la situation actuelle de la critique du texte et sur certains des problèmes qui sont posés par cette situation.

Der Begriff Ethik des Neuen Testaments bezeichnet nicht im philosophischen Sinn ein ethisches System als abstrahierende Reflexion ber Sittlichkeit, sondern den sachbezogenen, also nicht nur begrifflichen Zusam-menhang von ethischen uerungen und Vorstellungen, wie dieser aus den Schriften des Neuen Testaments zu erheben ist. Ethik des Neuen Testaments ist demnach eine systematisierende Darstellung, welche die situations-gebundenen ethischen Aussagen des Neuen Testaments zur Grundlage hat und an diese (als an die Ethik des N.T. im engeren Sinn) gewiesen bleibt.

The interpretation of 1 Cor 12.31–13.13 is thwarted by three problems. The most important obstacle is the obscurity of the genre to which this passage belongs, added to which are two minor riddles. The question of the function and meaning of the exhortation: ‘Zealously strive for the greatest gifts’ (12.31) as well as of the clause: ‘that I might boast’ (13.3) has not, as yet, been answered convincingly.

The importance of the OT theophanies in relation to NT conceptions of the End has never been sufficiently realized. Again and again the prophets and psalmists spoke not merely of the Day of the Lord but they spelled this out in terms of a divine coming. Thus in Mic 1. 3 we read that ‘the Lord cometh forth out of his place, and will come down …’ Psa 96. 13 declares, ‘He cometh to judge the earth.’

In recent studies of the parables, including some of those dealing with the judge and the widow, there has been an overemphasis on philosophical-theological and existential meaning. At the same time, there has been a lack of concern for the writers' vocabulary, methods when dealing with sources, and style and literary methods as these things relate to the study of parables. Such things, rather than the meaning of the parable, are my primary concern in dealing with the parable of the judge and the widow.

Das letzte Buch der Bibel hat sowohl der Verkündigung der Kirche wie auch der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft eine Vielzahl von Problemen und schwer zu lösenden Rätseln aufgegeben, die bis heute recht unterschiedlich bewertet werden. Schon in der Zeit der alten Kirche war man kontroverser Auffassung in der Frage, welche Persönlichkeit als Verfasser des Buches in Anspruch genommen werden könnte. Bischof Dionys von Alexandrien hat um die Mitte des dritten Jahrhunderts eine ausführliche Stellungnahme abgegeben, die uns durch Euseb überkommen ist. Darin wird auf die erheblichen Differenzen aufmerksam gemacht, die zwischen dem vierten Evangelium und der Apokalypse bestehen. In keiner der beiden Schriften werde auf die andere in erkenn-barer Weise Bezug genommen. Vielmehr seien sowohl die verwendete Begrifflichkeit wie auch der sprachliche Ausdruck von ganz verschiedener Art. Während dem Evangelisten das gute Zeugnis ausgestellt wird, er habe ein fehlerloses Griechisch geschrieben, in höchster Gewandtheit des Ausdrucks, der Gedankenentwicklung und der Satzverbindung, widerfährt dem Verfasser der Apokalypse eine weit weniger günstige Beurteilung: seine Rede und Sprache seien nicht rein griechisch, er gebrauche gelegentlich barbarische Wendungen und mache sich bisweilen auch grober Sprachfehler schuldig. Dionys spricht diese Einschätzung nicht leichten Herzens aus. Denn er fügt die Versicherung hinzu, niemand möge glauben, er habe seine Meinung in spöttischer Absicht formuliert. Vielmehr habe er nur die Ungleichheiten dieser Schriften dartun wollen. In der neueren Diskussion sind zwar immer wieder Versuche unternommen worden, ein größeres Maß an Beziehungen oder gar Übereinstimmungen zwischen dem vierten Evangelium und der Apokalypse aufzuweisen. Doch ist kritische Forschung gut beraten, wenn sie die Argumente des Dionys auch heute mit der gebotenen Sorgfalt zur Kenntnis nimmt und bedenkt.

By three things did Israel enter into the Covenant, by circumcision, and baptism and sacrifice. Circumcision was in Egypt, as it was written, ‘No uncircumcised person shall eat thereof’ (Exod. xii. 48). Baptism was in the wilderness just before the giving of the Law: as it is written, ‘Sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes’ (Exod. xix. 10). And sacrifice, as it is said, ‘And he sent young men of the children of Israel which offered burnt offerings’ (Exod. xxiv. 5). And so in all ages when a Gentile is willing to enter into the Covenant, and gather himself under the wings of the Shekinah of God, and take upon him the yoke of the Law, he must be circumcised and be baptized and bring a sacrifice. As it is written, ‘As you are, so shall the strangerbe’ (Num. xv. 55). How are you? So likewise the stranger (or proselyte) through all generations: by circumcision and baptism, and bringing of a sacrifice. And what is the stranger' sacrifice? A burnt offering of a beast, or two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons, both of them for a burnt-offering. And at this time when there is no sacrificing, they must be circumcised and be baptized; and when the Temple shall be built, they are to bring the sacrifice. A stranger that is circumcised and not baptized, or baptized and not circumcised, is not a proselyte till he be both circumcised and baptized: and he must be baptized in the presence of three…. Even as they circumcise and baptize strangers, so do they circumcise and baptize servants that are received from the heathen into the name of servitude…. The Gentile that is made proselyte and the slave that is made free, behold he is like a child new born.

In seiner Studie ‘Jesu letzter Wille nach Johannes 17’ hat Ernst Käsemann ein Bild des Johannesevangeliums als das eines Dokuments einer Christo-logie des auf Erden schreitenden göttlichen Logos entworfen. Worte, die auf die Inkarnation hinweisen, wie 1. 14, deutet ernicht als Ausdruck der Selbsterniedrigung des Erlösers, sondern als ein Zeugnis seiner triumphie-renden Herrlichkeit, die die Barriere der Weltlichkeit überwindet und auch den sündigen Menschen erreicht.

On salt que la liturgie latine de la fête de l'ascension, faisant unlégitime usage de la typologie, utilise le ps. lxviii (lxvii). 19a et y insère le nom Christus pour faire exprimer clairement au texte l'événement de l'ascension du Seigneur Jésus; elle fait chanter à làEglise: ‘Ascendens Christus in altum, alleluia, captivam duxit captivitatem, alleluia!’ Le même verset du psaume est cite en Eph. iv. 8, mais avec des transformations intentionnelles qui pourralent bien signifier une application du psaume différente de celle de la liturgie.

Almost all students of Luke-Acts have called attention to the special place of scripture in these documents. The fundamental Lukan strategy seems to be presented in the closing chapter of the gospel. In his post-resurrection appearance to the two disciples on the way to Emmaus, Jesus assumes the role of the authoritative interpreter of scripture and shows that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer. He interprets all the scriptures ‘beginning with Moses and all the prophets’ (Luke 24. 27; cf. 24. 35, 45). This chapter suggests to the reader that, although the scriptures are authoritative, they must be rightly, i.e. Christologically, interpreted. This widely acknowledged principle has certain implications that require investigation.
