This work presents data for the mineral assemblages, composition and Raman spectroscopy of proximal secondary Be and associated minerals in pseudomorphs after beryl from granitic pegmatites located along the contacts of major regional geological units. The pegmatites differ in their position relative to the ductile to brittle shear zones within the Rožná-Olší ore field (U-deposit), Czech Republic. Extensive dissolution of beryl crystals in the beryl–columbite pegmatites Drahonín IV and Věžná I situated within or close to the shear zones is evident in contrast to minor alteration of beryl in the Dolní Rožínka and Kovářová pegmatites located outside of the shear zones. Near-total replacement of beryl crystals, up to 40 cm in length, from the Drahonín IV pegmatite, located in the Olší shear zone formed the following secondary Be minerals in order of their abundance: bavenite–bohseite > bertrandite ≫ milarite > hydroxylgugiaite. This assemblage is also characterised by the presence of sulfides (pyrite, galena, sphalerite) and zeolites. Such an extensive replacement process required a substantial fluid flow and is very possibly related to the pre-uranium quartz–sulfide and carbonate–sulfide mineralisation events within the Rožná-Olší ore field. Alteration products resulting from breakdown of beryl in the Věžná I pegmatite follow the sequential substages (bertrandite + K-feldspar ± harmotome → epididymite + K-feldspar → hydroxylgugiaite + K-feldspar) and locally show cross-cutting textures. These assemblages were generated by post-magmatic residual fluids (early assemblage bertrandite + K-feldspar) as well as fluids related to a retrograde stage of metamorphism, compositionally contrasting with the host serpentinite, and perhaps also hydrothermal processes associated with the Olší shear zone. The pegmatites Dolní Rožínka and Kovářová, located outside of the shear zones, exhibit only a low degree of alteration and have differing textural and paragenetic development. Highly variable assemblages of secondary minerals after beryl are excellent mineral indicators of hydrothermal overprinting in granitic pegmatites during a variety of subsolidus processes.

This work presents the results of an investigation of an assemblage of secondary Sc-minerals from the intraplutonic metaluminous pegmatite Kožichovice II, Třebíč Pluton, Czech Republic. The assemblage was formed by hydrothermally-induced dissolution of primary Sc-enriched (≈1.6 wt.% Sc2O3) columbite-(Mn) followed by in situ reprecipitation of volumetrically dominant fersmite (≈0.16 wt.% Sc2O3) and minor nioboheftetjernite (ScNbO4). Subsequent hydrothermal processes resulted in the formation of fluorcalciomicrolite + Sc-minerals (thortveitite + kristiansenite) + titanite. The mass balance calculations (based on EPMA-derived mineral compositions, mineral proportions obtained from TIMA automated mineralogy and textural observations) revealed that the amount of Sc released from the replaced mass of columbite-(Mn) is significantly higher than the amount of Sc incorporated in the mass of the secondary minerals. This indicates that part of the Sc was mobilised and released to the host rocks (pegmatite and granite). The secondary mineral assemblages indicate elevated Ca activity in the alteration fluids. Other occurrences of Sc-minerals in pegmatites (Baveno Pluton and Heftetjern pegmatite) show remarkable similarities in the paragenetic position of Sc-minerals (late hydrothermal/replacement minerals), including the high activity of Ca in fluids during their formation. The high activity of Ca in fluids during the metasomatic replacement of Sc-enriched precursors causes the formation of the volumetrically dominant Sc incompatible phases, followed by a local supersaturation of Sc resulting in the crystallisation of secondary Sc-minerals.

ATO4 compounds are a class of oxides which includes the rare earth element (REE) bearing phosphates and arsenates, REEPO4 and REEAsO4. In this study, we have investigated the isothermal high-pressure and the isobaric high-temperature behaviour of natural samples of xenotime-(Y) (ideally YPO4), chernovite-(Y) (YAsO4) and monazite-(Ce) (CePO4) from the hydrothermal veins cropping out at Mt. Cervandone in the Western Italian Alps. Experimental data based on in situ X-ray diffraction (both single-crystal and powder techniques with conventional or synchrotron radiation) have allowed us to fit the unit-cell volumes and axial thermal and compressional evolution and provide a suite of refined thermo-elastic parameters. A comprehensive analysis of the role played by the crystal chemistry on the thermo-elastic response of these minerals is discussed, along with the description of the main crystal-structural deformation mechanisms for both the zircon (xenotime and chernovite) and monazite (monazite) structural types. Pressure-induced phase transitions of xenotime-(Y) and chernovite-(Y) are discussed and compared with previous literature data, whereas a change in the compressional behaviour of monazite-(Ce) at ∼18 GPa, involving an increase in the coordination number of the REE-hosting A site, is presented and discussed.

Crystal structures along the join beryl–pezzottaite have been refined and their compositions determined by electron-microprobe analysis. All crystals show sharp uniform diffraction spots but are microscale mixtures of more than one structure. Three distinct phases were identified with different diffraction characteristics: (1) hexagonal (P6/mcc) Cs-rich beryl; (2) hexagonal–rhombohedral ($R\overline 3 c$) twinned pezzottaite; (3) incommensurate phases with cell dimensions resembling those of beryl with a doubled c-dimension and l indices deviating from integer values by ±0.05–0.10. Beryl (P6/mcc) structures refined to R1 indices from 2.36 to 2.91% and pezzottaite structures refined to R1 indices from 3.31 to 5.83%. In pezzottaite, the Cs1 and Cs2 sites are each occupied by Cs+, Rb+ and (H2O) with Cs+ showing a preference for Cs1; and the Na1 and Na2 sites are occupied by Na+ and Ca2+. Na+ bonds to one (H2O) group and (H2O) bonds to one Na+. The ordering of (Cs+ + Rb+) and (Na+ + Ca2+) in pezzottaite is driven by the incident bond-valence requirements of the anions coordinating the (LiO4) tetrahedron. The valence-sum rule is maintained through the (Cs+ + Rb+) + Li+ → □ + Be2+ variation in beryl by cooperative relaxation of bonds at the Si and Be tetrahedra, and in pezzottaite by cooperative relaxation of bonds at the Si, Al and Li tetrahedra. The valence-sum rule mandates that Na+ must bond to one channel (type-II) (H2O) group which, when combined with the constraint of electroneutrality, requires that compositions along the beryl–pezzottaite join must lie below the line (Cs+ + Rb+) + 2(Na+ + Ca2+) = 1 – 2Ca2+ apfu. The occurrence of an incommensurate phase at intermediate compositions is due to the interaction of the species in adjacent columns of the P6/mcc beryl structure.

Hydroxylbastnäsite-(La), the OH- and La-dominant member of the bastnäsite group, in fact known for many years, was studied in detail and has been approved by the IMA–CNMNC as a new mineral species with the ideal, end-member formula La(CO3)(OH). The holotype originates from the Vuoriyarvi (another spelling: Vuorijärvi) alkaline-ultrabasic complex, Northern Karelia, and the cotype from the Mochalin Log REE deposit, Potaniny Mts, South Urals, both in Russia. At Vuoriyarvi, hydroxylbastnäsite-(La) occurs as clusters (up to 1 mm) of light brown, honey-yellow or colourless hexagonal tabular to short-prismatic crystals up to 0.15 mm associated with fluorite and ancylite-(Ce) in cavities of calcite–dolomite carbonatites. At Mochalin Log, hydroxylbastnäsite-(La) forms light brown grains up to 0.2 mm included in massive aggregates of other LREE minerals: bastnäsite-(Ce), bastnäsite-(La), percleveite-(Ce), percleveite-(La), biraite-(Ce), biraite-(La), törnebohmite-(La), ferriperbøeite-(Ce), allanite-(Ce), etc. Dmeas is 4.75(2) and Dcalc is 4.778 g cm–3 (holotype). Hydroxylbastnäsite-(La) is optically uniaxial (+), ω = 1.76(1) and ε = 1.86(1) (holotype). The chemical composition (wt.%, electron microprobe, CO2 and H2O calculated: holotype/cotype) is: CaO 0.23/0.00, SrO 0.07/0.00, La2O3 39.47/39.58, Ce2O3 33.51/31.99, Pr2O3 1.03/1.51, Nd2O3 1.95/2.38, F 0.76/3.33, CO2 20.49/20.34, H2O 3.77/2.58, –O=F 0.32/1.40, total 100.96/100.31. The empirical formulae, calculated based on the sum of metal cations of 1 apfu and one CO3 group pfu, are (La0.52Ce0.44Nd0.02Pr0.01Ca0.01)Σ1.00(CO3)[(OH)0.90F0.09]Σ0.99 (holotype) and (La0.53Ce0.42Nd0.03Pr0.02)Σ1.00(CO3)[(OH)0.62F0.38]Σ1.00 (cotype). Hydroxylbastnäsite-(La) is hexagonal, P6̅, unit-cell parameters (from powder XRD data, holotype/cotype) are: a = 12.537(3)/12.533(1), c = 9.968(2)/9.908(1) Å, V = 1356.8(5)/1347.9(3) Å3 and Z = 18. Strong reflections of the powder XRD pattern [d,Å(I)(hkl)] are (holotype): 4.98(39)(002), 3.616(88)(300), 2.926(100)(302), 2.089(41)(330), 2.052(46)(304) and 1.927(40)(332). The crystal structure of holotype hydroxylbastnäsite-(La) was refined by the Rietveld method, Rwp = 0.0071, Rp = 0.0050, Robs = 0.0466. It is isostructural to hydroxylbastnäsite-(Ce) and synthetic bastnäsite-type hydroxyl-carbonates REE3+(CO3)(OH) (REE = La–Er), but differs from fluorine-dominant bastnäsites which adopt the space group P6̅2c.

The Diely occurrence of metamorphosed As-rich manganese mineralisation is located in the Spišsko-gemerské rudohorie Mountains near the Poráč village and comprises Early Palaeozoic metamorphic rocks of the Gemeric Unit in the Western Carpathian region. Mineralisation is situated in the narrow tectonically delineated belt of Rakovec Group rocks consisting of mafic metavolcanic material generated during the back-arc submarine volcanic activity of the Early Ordovician–Silurian period. The Mn mineralisation is hosted in siliceous laminated lenses (metacherts) embedded in metabasalts and its tuffs. Manganese ore consists of quartz, braunite, rhodonite, nambulite, rhodochrosite, kutnohorite, OH-bearing garnets with dominant andradite composition, hematite, aegirine, aegirine–augite, ferri-ghoseite, ferri-winchite, baryte and pyrophanite. The mineralisation is cross-cut by a system of narrow younger veins composed dominantly of As-enriched minerals of the pyrosmalite group (schallerite, mcgillite and friedelite), tiragalloite, manganberzeliite, brandtite, sarkinite and svabite, associated with hematite, rhodochrosite, kutnohorite, baryte and quartz. Formation of manganese mineralisation at the Diely occurrence was caused by migration of seawater into the basaltic oceanic crust where increasing temperatures and acidity generated hydrothermal fluids enriched in manganese. The Mn-bearing hydrothermal fluids were enriched in Li, providing an additional substituent in the mineralisation. Following initial stages, the subsequent Variscan and Alpine tectonometamorphic events resulted in formation of three main mineralisation stages distinguishable by paragenetic relations and the mineral composition. Based on metamorphic association and amphibole geobarometric calculations, the peak metamorphic conditions reached was upper greenschist facies. The Diely occurrence near Poráč represents a unique metamorphosed manganese mineralisation with abundant arsenates and arsenosilicates previously unknown in the Western Carpathian region.

Annivite-(Zn), Cu6(Cu4Zn2)Σ6Bi4S13, is a new IMA-approved mineral species from the Geister vein, Jáchymov ore district, Czech Republic. It occurs as anhedral grains, up to 50 μm in size, and growth zones, up to 100 μm in thickness, hosted by oscillatory zoned annivite-(Zn)/tennantite-(Zn) grains, and associated with Bi-rich tennantite-(Zn), tennantite-(Fe), tetrahedrite-(Zn), the not-yet approved ‘annivite-(Fe)’, bismuth, emplectite, wittichenite and supergene bismite, walpurgite and metazeunerite. In reflected light, annivite-(Zn) is isotropic, pale grey with a brownish shade and very rare pale brown internal reflections. Reflectance data for the four COM wavelengths in air are [λ (nm): R (%)]: 470: 32.3; 546: 32.0; 589: 32.0; 650: 31.6. Electron microprobe analysis gave (in wt.% – average of 5 spot analyses): Cu 36.29, Ag 0.14, Fe 0.08, Zn 7.11, Pb 0.19, As 6.07, Sb 4.50, Bi 21.08, S 23.68, total 99.14. On the basis of ΣMe =16 atoms per formula unit, the empirical formula of annivite-(Zn) is Cu10.13Ag0.02Zn1.93Fe0.03Pb0.02Bi1.79As1.43Sb0.66S13.10. Annivite-(Zn) is cubic, I$\bar 4$3m, with unit-cell parameters a = 10.3545(6) Å, V = 1110.16(19) Å3 and Z = 2. Its crystal structure was refined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction data to a final R1 = 0.0493 on the basis of 278 unique reflections with Fo > 4σ(Fo) and 23 refined parameters. Annivite-(Zn) is isotypic with other tetrahedrite-group minerals. Its crystal chemistry is discussed, and previous findings of Bi-rich tetrahedrite-group minerals are briefly reviewed, along with the description of a second finding of annivite-(Zn) from the abandoned Mauritius tin mine, Hřebečná, Krušné hory Mountains, Czech Republic.

The Prof pegmatite is located NW of Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada on Boulder Mountain. Due to the abundance of petalite, the pegmatite is classified as a petalite subtype Li-Cs-Ta pegmatite or a Group one pegmatite. The Prof pegmatite contains a suite of minerals indicative of a highly evolved pegmatite melt including petalite, elbaite, lepidolite and Nb–Ta oxides. Four textural zones are present: (1) border; (2) intermediate, including (2.1) graphic texture dominant and (2.2) overgrowth dominant, where diverse minerals form rims around one another; (3) central; and (4) quartz. The border zone has a similar mineralogy to the intermediate zone and is interpreted to represent a chilled margin. The intermediate zone has a feldspar, mica, garnet and dravite–schorl dominant composition. The central zone hosts an evolved pegmatite core, which contains the majority of the lithium mineralisation composed of petalite, elbaite and lepidolite. The tourmaline, Nb–Ta oxides and mica within the pegmatite record the geochemical evolution of the melt from more primitive Fe- and Mg-rich minerals to a Li-, Mn- and Nb-rich assemblage indicative of a highly evolved geochemical system. The various pegmatitic textures and extremely fractionated geochemical composition of the pegmatite indicate that the melt was undercooled and crystallised rapidly. Three phases of metasomatism are recognised in the Prof pegmatite: an albitisation event observed cutting primary orthoclase; followed by a transition to a Na–Li–F-rich event mostly containing secondary albite, trilithionite and elbaites; and a sericitisation event.

The Prof pegmatite has a similar mineralogy to known pegmatites at Mount Begbie, 15 km to the south, in particular the notable presence of the rare mineral qitianlingite, petalite, lepidolite and elbaite. Together, these pegmatite bodies form part of an extensive, poorly mapped pegmatite field. Additional work is required to assess the extent and nature of mineralisation within this field.

A rounded fragment of a multicoloured tourmaline crystal (2.5 cm diameter), collected from the secondary gem deposit of Mavuco, Alto Ligoña pegmatite district, Mozambique, has been investigated using a multi-analytical approach, with the objective of reconstructing its growth history. The sample represents a core-to-rim section, perpendicular to the c axis, of a crystal characterised by a variety of colours. These change from a black core to an intermediate zone with a series of colours, yellow, blue–green and purple, to a final dark-green prismatic overgrowth. These changes are the result of a wide variation in Fe, Mn, Ti and Cu concentrations and their redox state. The black core is characterised by enrichment in Fe and Mn, with iron present in its divalent state. The yellow zone shows a progressive depletion in Fe and its colouration is caused by Mn2+ and Mn2+-Ti4+ IVCT interactions. The progressive decrease in Mn coupled with the absence of Ti, and the lack of Fe, implies that Cu2+ acts as the only chromophore in the pale blue–green zone. The dominant colour-causing agent of the purplish zone is Mn3+, denoting a change in redox environment; however, even though the amount of Cu remains significant, its chromophore effect is obscured by Mn3+. The dark-green prismatic overgrowth, characterised by a sharp increase in Fe, Mn and also Ca, is interpreted as a late-stage partial re-opening of the geochemical system. This occurrence could potentially be related to mechanical instability of the cavity in which the crystal grew.

Fluor-rossmanite, ideally □(Al2Li)Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3F, is a new mineral of the tourmaline supergroup, found at the Krutaya pegmatite, Malkhan pegmatite field, Zabaykalskiy Krai, Western Siberia, Russia. It forms an intermediate zone up to 3 mm thick in a chemically heterogeneous, concentrically zoned, polychrome tourmaline crystal 3 × 2 cm in size. The new mineral is light pink, transparent with a white streak and a vitreous lustre. It is brittle, with conchoidal fracture. The Mohs hardness is 7. The Dmeas = 3.07(2) g cm–3 and Dcalc = 3.071 g cm–3. Optically, fluor-rossmanite is non-pleochroic, uniaxial (–), ω = 1.647(2) and ɛ = 1.628(2) (589 nm). The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 31 anions (O+OH+F) is: X(□0.46Na0.32Ca0.20Pb0.02)Σ1.00 Y(Al1.84Li1.05Mn0.05Fe2+0.02Ti0.02Cr0.01)Σ2.99 ZAl6.00 T(Si5.79Al0.21)Σ6.00B2.99O27 V(OH)3 W[F0.44(OH)0.20O0.36]Σ1.00. Fluor-rossmanite is trigonal, R3m; the unit-cell parameters are: a = 15.7951(3), c = 7.08646(17) Å, V = 1531.11(7) Å3 and Z = 3. The crystal structure is refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data [R = 0.0211 for 1178 unique reflections with I > 2σ(I)]. The new mineral is a ‘fluor-’ species belonging to the X-vacant group of the tourmaline supergroup. The closest end-member compositions of valid tourmaline species are those of rossmanite and fluor-elbaite, to which fluor-rossmanite is related by the substitutions WF– ↔ WOH– and X2□ + YAl3+ ↔ X2Na+ + YLi+, respectively.

The ancylite supergroup has been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association, with the general crystal chemical formula (M3+xM2+2–x)(CO3)2[(OH)x⋅(2–x)H2O] (1 ≤ x ≤ 2, Z = 2). The ancylite supergroup can be divided into two groups defined by different proportions of the M cation and hydroxyl anion and/or water molecule: the ancylite group is defined for 1 ≤ x ≤ 1.5; the kozoite group is defined for 1.5 < x ≤ 2. The ancylite supergroup minerals are orthorhombic with space group Pmcn, or monoclinic with space group Pm11, and have a crystal structure with species-defining trivalent and divalent M cations (M = La3+, Ce3+, Nd3+, Ca2+, Sr2+ and Pb2+) which centre ten-vertex polyhedra formed by oxygen atoms at three independent O sites. Two vertices of the triangular (CO3)2– anion are oxygen atoms, whereas the third one, O(3), is statistically filled with (OH)– groups and H2O molecules. The triangular faces of three oxygen atoms of MO10 coordination polyhedra join the chains of this ten-vertex polyhedron, which is extended along the c axis. The (CO3) triangles connect chains in three dimensions. To date, eight valid mineral species with M2+ = Sr2+, Ca2+ and Pb2+ belong to the ancylite group [ancylite-(La), ancylite-(Ce), calcioancylite-(La), calcioancylite-(Ce), calcioancylite-(Nd), gysinite-(La), gysinite-(Ce) and gysinite-(Nd)]. Two hydroxyl carbonates with only rare earth elements as species-defining cations, kozoite-(La) and kozoite-(Nd) are members of the kozoite group.

Valsassina (Lombardy, Northern Italy) is located in the Lombard Southern Alps and is characterised by the presence of a metamorphic basement, by a major late Variscan intrusive complex and by Carboniferous–Permian volcano-sedimentary cover units. These rocks host a pervasive system of inadequately studied mineralised veins. These veins are characterised by base metal (Pb, Zn, Cu and Fe) and complex polymetallic assemblages.

In this study, we have investigated the ore textures, mineral compositions of sulfides and sulfosalts (by EMPA–WDS and LA–ICP–MS analyses), and stable isotopes (C and O) in carbonate gangue minerals of various mineralised veins to determine the conditions of deposition of these ore deposits. Two different vein families can be recognised in Valsassina: NNW–SSE veins characterised by a complex polymetallic sulfide–sulfosalt assemblage, also with Ni–Co–Fe arsenides and other Ag–Bi-bearing minerals; and NE–SW veins with a simpler, base metal sulfide assemblage. The Ni–Co-bearing NNW–SSE veins have some distinctive features of the ‘five-element vein’ type deposits, with the Ni–Co–Fe arsenide ore stage pre-dating a sulfide-tetrahedrite-dominated ore stage. LA–ICP–MS data for pyrite and sphalerite, and stable isotopic compositions (C and O) of the carbonate gangue minerals, show no clear differences between the two families of veins, which are probably linked genetically. The isotopic compositions of the Valsassina vein carbonates are closely comparable with the signature of several major five-element ore districts. Preliminary temperature estimates for the Valsassina vein systems were based on the sphalerite composition, applying the GGIMFis geothermometer. The estimated temperatures for the sulfide-dominated ore stage post-dating the Ni–Co minerals precipitation range between 100 and 250°C. The crosscutting relationships, observed for all the veins with the host rocks, suggest a possible late to post Variscan (late Permian) age, making these vein systems comparable with other late–post Variscan polyphase hydrothermal events affecting large sectors of the Southern Alpine domain.
