Impact wear can be defined as the wear of a solid surface due to percussion, which is arepetitive exposure to dynamic contact by another solid body. It has not been studied asextensive as other wear mechanisms and the information on causes and actual data is quitescarce. In the present work an experimental wear tester is designed and used to study theimpact wear phenomenon experimentally. It creates the consecutive impacts between ballsand flat plate. The different ball sizes (up to 30 mm), impact velocities (up to 6m.s-1) and impactangle (10°− 80°) can be tried by tester. The mass lossof plate is measured as the wear parameter. These measurements for different specimensrevealed some aspects of their wearing behaviors. The obtained results could be helpful inoptimal practical designs and explanation of some phenomena associated with impact wear.

Shrink fits are low-price connections which are widely used in industry and industrialconnections. In designing shrink fits it is important to consider radial interface foroptimized performance and also to choose an accurate method of fabrication and assembling.Parts which have to be assembled are usually exposed to thermo-mechanical loads. Mode andtime duration of heat transfer have a significant effect on required hydraulic force,stress time rate of creation in parts and joint ability to withstand against externalloads. Therefore, planning a set of appropriate thermal and structural procedures hassignificant role in reducing energy consumption, optimized performance and promoting thespeed of parts assembly. Despite of the fact, few researches have been done on shrink fitoperation and design, rather than dimensional design. In this study, shrink fits arestudied in two main processes: first heating and mounting process and then backing to theambient condition. A 3D coupled thermal and structural simulation based on FEM is done oneach process through well-known Solidworks Premium. To evaluate the accuracy, exactanalytical solution of two steel rings shrink fit is compared with the approach outcomes.Results of validated method are used for choosing the most optimum sub processes of shrinkfit fabrication.

La caractérisation non destructive des structures en béton par propagation d'ondes ultrasonores permet d'accéder aux vitesses voire atténuations et spectres fréquentiels pour diagnostiquer une pathologie ou un état du matériau. La forte hétérogénéité du béton au regard des longueurs d'ondes conduit à des phénomènes de diffusion et de non linéarité acoustique. Les conséquences sur les paramètres ultrasonores sont analysées tant sur l'aspect propagation que rétrodiffusion.

The pulleys of an automotive front engine accessory drive are driven in rotation by a poly-V belt itself driven by the crankshaft pulley. This driving pulley is often used as a torsional vibration damper (TVD) for the crankshaft. Three elements compose the pulley: the hub, a rubber ring and an inertia steel ring with v-ribs on its outer diameter. Although the crankshaft torsional vibrations are dampen, they are transmitted to the belt transmission and therefore to the driven accessories. Hence, recent developments have conducted to add a decoupling function to these pulleys. The decoupling is realized by an other rubber ring. The TVD pulley components are designed in order to dampen crankshaft vibrations over a given frequency range, i.e. stiffness and damping characteristics are determined for the rubber ring. These expected characteristics have to be checked after manufacturing for product certification but also to give some real measured data input for simulation models. An experimental characterization method is presented and discussed for the determination of the stiffness and damping coefficients of the rubber rings used in such pulley. The test rig developed is temperature controlled in order to show the influence of the temperature.

Measurement of heat fluxes and electrodes temperature in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell were performed using platinum wires and heat flux sensors. A temperature difference of 6 °C to 9 °C between the electrodes and the bipolar plates was observed for a cell operating at a current density of 1.5 A.cm-2. These measurements show a strong non-uniformity of the temperature profile through the membrane electrode assembly that future models should take into account. Simultaneous heat fluxes measurements have allowed to evaluate in situ the effective thermal conductivity of the porous layers. Values of the order of 0.3 W.m-1.K-1 were found.

The effects of punch geometry and sample size on forming limit diagrams in expansion areinvestigated in the case of a 2024 aluminium alloy. Four configurations were selected:flat punch (Marciniak test) or hemispheric punch and decimetric vs. centimetric toolingdimensions. Both decimetric and centimetric deep-drawing devices are associated with animage correlation tool that allows identifying without any contact the deformation on thesurface of planar or non-planar specimens. Strains on the surface of the samples areobserved by means of a double numerisation in three dimensions of the sample before andafter deformation by using stereoscopic vision and triangulation. Finally, deep-drawinglimit of the four configurations are compared in expansion state and with literature.Results mainly show that hemispherical punch allows measuring higher strains and is lesssensitive to size effect than Marciniak test.

Nous introduisons dans cet article une application de la méthode des éléments finis étendus (X-FEM) au cas de la simulation numérique de la coupe, qui se trouve encore confrontée à des limitations d'ordre numérique. La gestion du problème du contact à l'interface outil/copeau est présentée, et l'intérêt du couplage entre X-FEM et la méthode des level-sets pour ce problème est mis en valeur. Les résultats de la validation, effectuée sur des exemples typiques, sont détaillés. Les premières validations sur un test d'usinage sont ensuite présentées, pour une loi de comportement de type fluide newtonien. Nous dégageons enfin les améliorations futures que la méthode est à même d'apporter à la simulation numérique de la coupe.

VIRTOOL is an application that is part of the European Union supported project “Virtual Manipulation to Simulate Machine-Tool Processes” (VIRTOOL, CRAFT-1999-70292). The application is being developed by a consortium of two industrial enterprises (Alecop, IMH) and three partners in research and higher education (CEIT, TUD, ACM) from four European countries.The objective of this project is to design and develop a computer-supported learning environment for machine-tool processes by using interactive 3D graphics and virtual reality techniques. An integral part of this software will be an easy to use construction tool for the development of new 3D simulation models of machine-tools with the supporting learning material, which is based on a general instructional design model.

De plus en plus, les concepteurs utilisent des méthodes avancées de calcul, pour optimiser les performances des systèmes mécaniques. Ce constat est d'autant plus vrai dans le milieu aéronautique où le rapport poids puissance doit être le plus faible possible. Certains logiciels de CAO (CATIA, SOLIDWORKS, PRO ENGINEER, etc.) offrent la possibilité d'effectuer des calculs de dimensionnement. Néanmoins, ce type d'outil ne permet pas, à ce jour, d'estimer facilement les pressions de contact entre deux pièces. Cet article présente les différentes méthodologies utilisables dans un environnement CAO pour le calcul des pressions de contact dans les roulements à pistes intégrées de boîte de transmission aéronautique. Ces méthodologies sont analytiques (théorie de Hertz), numériques (éléments-finis) ou hybrides. Ces différentes approches sont analysées et comparées suivant les critères de précision, de temps de calcul et de leurs aptitudes à s'intégrer dans un processus de conception industriel. À partir de cette analyse, il sera proposé une méthodologie de calcul des pressions de contact.

Dans le cas d'un assemblage soudé, le niveau de contrainte admissible, vis-à-vis de la fatigue, dépend de la présence d'imperfections apportées par l'opération de soudage.L'augmentation de ce niveau de contrainte passe par une amélioration de la qualité de la soudure, en particulier, en limitant les défauts présents et en jouant sur la géométrie du cordon de soudure.Dans ces conditions, des gains supérieurs à 50 % sur la résistance à la fatigue peuvent être obtenus.Dans ce contexte, cet article a pour objectif, tout d'abord, de préciser les types d'imperfections à améliorer, ensuite, d'indiquer les méthodes d'évaluation de ces imperfections et de proposer des voies d'amélioration, enfin, de proposer des méthodes analytiques ou numériques, afin de prendre en compte la qualité de la soudure au stade de la conception des composants soudés.L'application de cette démarche de qualité conduit à la fois à des gains de fabrication, résultant d'une augmentation des niveaux de contraintes admissibles et à une meilleure maîtrise du procédé de soudage et donc à un accroissement de la fiabilité des produits.

Un modèle numérique utilisant la méthode de la capacité effective moyenne est présenté pour étudier le transfert thermique dans le processus de solidification lors de la coulée continue avec refroidissement direct. La résolution du problème est faite par la méthode des volumes finis à maillage fixe. Une chaleur spécifique moyenne est donc utilisée pour simuler le volume incluant la zone de changement de phase. Cette méthode surmonte les inconvénients de la méthode de la capacité effective qui est très sensible au choix de l'intervalle de température de changement de phase. Pour déterminer le coefficient de convection à la surface externe des billettes dans la région basse du moule, une méthodologie a été établie en utilisant d'une part, les théories de l'ébullition nucléée avec convection forcée et d'autre part, celles relatives au film de refroidissement. Les résultats de la simulation numérique sont validés par des résultats expérimentaux publiés. L'étude montre que la vitesse de retrait est un facteur très important pour le contrôle de la microstructure et de la condition d'évasion lors de la coulée des métaux.

Depuis la présentation publique de la première machine-outil à structure parallèle à Chicago en 1994, peu d'études ont été rendues publiques quant à leurs potentiels en usinage, de même que peu de machines réalisent actuellement des opérations d'usinage dans l'industrie. L'objectif de cette étude est d'analyser les potentialités de ces machines en usinage, et en particulier en usinage à grande vitesse de formes complexes. Pour cela, une méthode de mesure, précédemment testée et validée sur des machines sérielles et basée sur l'exploitation des sorties des codeurs de la machine, a été utilisée. Des essais ont été réalisés sur cinq machines sérielles et quatre machines parallèles, ce qui a permis de dresser un premier bilan. À l'heure actuelle, il a été montré que les machines parallèles peuvent produire des résultats intéressants en terme de temps d'usinage et de précision, et que les paramètres CN et FAO ont une influence non négligeable sur la "qualité" de la pièce finale. Il devient donc impératif de développer des procédures génériques afin de tester la réelle aptitude de chaque machine. Le simulateur qui a été développé précédemment au sein de notre équipe pour les machines sérielles est complété pour l'analyse des machines à structure parallèle.

La part des matériaux composites dans les structures aéronautiques devient de plus en plus importante et devrait se situer aux alentours de 50 % d'ici 2012. Dans la phase d'assemblage des tronçons d'avions, les centres de production aéronautiques actuels utilisent des Unités de Perçage Automatique (UPA) pneumatiques positionnés manuellement sur un outillage dédié pour le perçage axial des panneaux de structure. Les panneaux à percer sont des assemblages de matériaux composites, aluminium et titane. En particulier, le perçage de matériaux composites (hétérogène et anisotrope) peut engendrer l'apparition de défauts, tels que le délaminage ou l'écaillage, influençant directement les propriétés mécaniques. Les paramètres de coupe caractéristiques et l'usure des outils nécessitent d'être suivis et maîtrisés pour diminuer l'apparition de ces défauts macro et microgéométriques. Cet article présente donc la problématique du perçage de panneaux multi-matériaux, en rappelant les spécificités des matériaux usinés, les moyens de générations actuels ainsi que les modes de dégradations rencontrés. Un point sera fait sur l'influence des paramètres d'usinage sur la qualité géométrique et les défauts de surface. Les conclusions montreront les résultats obtenus et les développements à mener dans un futur proche.

Nous présentons une analyse modale d'une structure industrielle couplée avec un fluide, en utilisant les techniques numériques de calculs couplés fluide/structure. Compte tenu de la nature axisymétrique de la géométrie et de la nature non axisymétrique des équations de couplage, la modélisation du problème est réalisée au moyen d'éléments finis axisymétriques développés en série de Fourier. Un code de calcul est implanté dans Matlab pour permettre l'analyse modale de la structure. Différentes formulations du problème sont comparées ; les résultats de calcul Matlab sont comparés avec les résultats de calculs obtenus avec le code généraliste Ansys. Les développements mis en œuvre pour cet exemple seront à terme intégrés dans le code Ansys pour l'étude de problèmes couplés en pression/déplacement avec développement en série de Fourier.

The exploitation of cyclostationarity properties of vibratory signals is now more widelyused for monitoring rotating machinery and especially for diagnosing bearing defects. Theacoustic emission (AE) technology has also emerged as a reliable tool for preventivemaintenance of rotating machines. In this study, we propose an experimental study thatcharacterizes the cyclostationary aspect of acoustic emission (AE) signals recorded from adefective bearing (40 μm on the outer race) to see its efficiency to detecta defect at its very early stage of degradation. An industrial sensor (UE10 000) is used.An electrical circuit converts the high frequency signal into an audible signal byheterodyning. The cyclic spectral density, which is a tool dedicated that put intoevidence the presence of cyclostationarity, is used for characterizing thecyclostationary. Two new indicators based on this cyclostationary technique are proposedand compared for early detection of defective bearings.

Le travail présenté ici porte sur l'application au laminage des modèles de comportement récemment développés en plasticité grandes déformations en vue de la simulation numérique des procédés de mise en forme et notamment de l'emboutissage : modèle rigide plastique avec écrouissage isotrope, critère de Hill quadratique ou non-quadratique, plasticité associée ou non, viscoplasticité. Après avoir brièvement présenté ces modèles nous les intégrons dans le modèle classique de laminage (méthode des tranches, équation de Karman). La solution est obtenue en déterminant le point neutre par une méthode de tir.Ces modélisations sont ensuite illustrées par une analyse paramétrique de l'influence des divers paramètres constitutifs sur la réponse et une comparaison sur un matériau donné de différents modèlesen exploitant les modèles identifiéspar A. Khalfallah, A. Znaidi et A. Darsouni finalise ce travail.

This paper deals with a balance of energy and cutting fluid consumption used to manufacture an aluminum clutch case (AlSi9Cu3(Fe)) in industrial context. To establish this balance sheet constitutes the first stage of a reflection aiming at reducing the economic and ecological impact of the production of mechanical parts. Indeed, before intending to set up new technologies susceptible to reduce the cost of manufacturing of a part it is necessary to draw up an inventory of fixtures of the current situation. This paper brings to light the energy and environmental cost connected to the use of cutting fluids in machining. It establishes a prerequisite in the studies necessary for the implementation of a new technology (the minimum quantity lubrication or MQL) and in the characterization of this technology in comparison with the existing (wet machining). This study joins within the framework of a project supported by the “agence de l’environnement et de la matrise de l’énergie” (ADEME, France).

This paper presents a numerical study about lubricant inertia effect onthermohydrodynamic (THD) characteristics of Rayleigh step bearings running under steady,incompressible and laminar condition. To reach this goal, the set of governing equationsis solved numerically with and without considering the inertia terms. The discretizedforms of the momentum and energy equations are obtained by the finite volume method andsolved using the Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) technique. These equations are solvedsimultaneously because the dependency of lubricant viscosity with temperature. Thehydrodynamic and thermal behaviors of the slider step bearings are demonstrated bypresenting several figures including the lubricant pressure and temperature distributionswith and without considering the fluid inertia effect. Numerical results show that inertiaterm has considerable effect on THD characteristics of step bearings, especially when theyrun with high velocity of runner surface.

Several research works have been focused on integrating FEA (finite-elements analysis)with CAD (Computer Aided Design) over the last decade. In spite of the improvementsbrought by this integration, research work remains to be done in order to better integrateall the operations led during the design process. Until now, the communication between CADmodules remains static. The design process involves several modifications of an initialdesign solution. Consequently, there is a need for more flexible communications betweenCAD modules through the design cycle. Some approaches have been developed in order toreduce the design process length when using FEA, and to automate the transfer of part’sdata from one step of the process to the next one. Automatic re-meshing is one of theseapproaches and it is based on automatically updating the part’s mesh around modificationszones, in the case of a minor change in the part’s design, without the need to re-mesh theentire part. The purpose of this paper is presenting a new tool, aiming at the improvementof automatic re-meshing procedures. It basically consists in automatically identifying andlocating modifications between two CAD parts (typically an initial design and a modifieddesign). A major benefit of the approach presented here is that it is completelyindependent of the description frame, which is made possible with the use of vector-basedgeometric representations.

A benchmark is organised to quantify the variability relative to structure dynamicscomputations. The chosen demonstrator is a pump in service in thermal central units, whichis an engineered system with not well-known parameters, considered in its workenvironment. The blind modal characterisation of the separate pump components shows a5%–12% variability on eigenfrequency values and a less than 15% frequency error incomparison with experimental values. The numerical-experimental MAC numbers reach 0.7 atthe maximum, even after updating. An example of modal results on the pump assembly fixedis presented, which shows a larger discrepancy with measurement values, essentially due tothe modelling of the interfaces and boundary condition, and to the possible simplificationof the main components F.E. models to reduce their size. Though a significant frequencyerror, the first overall modes are correctly identified. If this tendency can be confirmedfrom all the participants’ results, the conclusion to be drawn is that, if the predictivecapability of F.E. models to represent the dynamical behaviour of sub-structures issatisfactory, the one relative to structures that are built-up of several components doesnot allow their confident use. Additional information issued from measurements is neededto improve their accuracy.
