Le développement du jet libre est relativement bien connu, ce n'est pas le cas du jet plan turbulent en présence d'un impact. En effet, selon la distance H de la paroi d'impact, et de l'épaisseur initiale e du jet, le développement se fera de manière relativement différente à cause du confinement qui conditionne l'expansion du jet. À la différence du jet libre, il n'existe pas à l'heure actuelle de base de données complète ni de modèle global permettant de décrire analytiquement la décroissance de la vitesse moyenne dans le plan de symétrie des jets plans en impact. La littérature fait bien état de lois semi-empiriques, mais les relations correspondantes ne concernent que quelques zones de la région de jet : le cône potentiel et la zone d'affinité principalement.Le travail présenté concerne d'une part, l'établissement d'une corrélation générale capable de décrire l'évolution de la vitesse axiale quelles que soient l'épaisseur du jet et la distance à l'impact, et d'autre part, la description du champ de turbulence du jet et les lois d'épanouissement latéral. Les résultats du modèle de décroissance de la vitesse axiale sont aussi comparés et validés à l'aide de mesures expérimentales obtenues par vélocimétrie laser à effet Doppler.

In this paper we present the design of a compact active cardiac stabilizer based onplanar compliant mechanisms and piezoelectric actuators. Considering an assembly of planarmanufactured structures helps to simplify the manufacturing process and may increase thecompactness. Parallel architectures constitute interesting solutions for their intrinsicstiffness properties, but in a planar configuration parallel manipulators often exhibitkinematic singularities. Two design approaches for planar parallel compliant mechanismsare presented in this paper. One design approach consists in designing a passive compliantmechanism in a configuration close to the singularity by introducing some asymmetriesduring the manufacturing process. The second design approach consists in taking advantageof the singularities of parallel manipulators to obtain non-trivial solutions. The newproposed active stabilizer, composed of planar compliant mechanisms, is introduced and itsperformances are discussed.

In this paper, strain gradient theory is used in developing a mathematical model based on classical flexural Kirchhoff plate theory that can predict static response of rectangular micro-plates. The result of this new model is a sixth order differential equation. Order of differential terms in Galerkin weak form of the equation is reduced so that C2 hierarchical p-version finite elements with second order global smoothness can be used to solve the problem. With different boundary conditions, the computed deflection distribution of micro-plates is compared with those of the classical theory, in which length scale parameters are not present. A series of studies have revealed that when length scale parameters are considered, deflection of a rectangular plate decreases with increasing the length scale effect; in other words micro plates exhibit more rigidity than what is predicted by the classic model. Here, deflections are normalized with respect to results obtained from classical plate theory. Comparison of maximum deflection values obtained from the extended model for micro plates with those available from the classic plate model indicates that classical theory overestimates displacement values and the largest error is observed for square micro plates. The overestimation levels off for plates with aspect ratios greater than three.

Among the primary phenomena observed when studying fire suppression are fuel surfacecooling, fire plume cooling and inerting effects. The last two result from waterevaporation generating a significant vapor concentration, thus leading to an importantheat sink as well as displacement and dilution of both oxygen and fuel vapor. FireDynamics Simulator (FDS.v6) is expected to be able to reproduce these effects.Extinguishment criterion focusing on plume cooling and inerting effects is based on adedicated heat balance, whereas suppression model related to fuel surface coolingevaluates the burning rate decrease according to an exponential law taking into accountlocal water mass reaching the fuel surface per unit area and an empirical constant whichpenalizes the prediction ability. Therefore, a new model derived from an Arrheniusequation has been implemented, which links the burning rate to the fuel surfacetemperature. Numerical simulations are conducted and compared with experimental data forall extinguishing mechanisms.

Dans cet article nous présentons quelques plans d'essais accélérés pour estimer la fiabilité des produits. Les plans étudiés sont basés sur le modèle standard de vie accélérée (SVA) en considérant des estimations paramétrique et non-paramétrique. Des applications sur des trombones, soumis à de la fatigue oligocyclique, sont présentées pour illustrer ces différents plans.

Although condition monitoring of centrifugal pump bearings to infer faults is common practice, the relationship between a pump’s vibration level and the unsteady flow within has not been extensively researched. The latter, however potentially provides the foundations for further developments in, pump design to increase performance, advanced predictive maintenance programs and, vibration monitoring techniques that can permit inference of pump efficiency states. This paper investigates the correlation between pump vibration and unsteady flow at different motor speeds. A test rig and a numerical CFD model were employed. It was found that flow-induced vibration in general increases with pump speed and was clearly linked to pump efficiency. It therefore seems possible to construct a model to deduce a pump’s efficiency from its pressure and vibration levels, if the efficiency curve is known a priori. However, as the vibration levels are also dependent on the system’s structural natural frequencies and modes, it seems that knowledge of these may also be needed in some instances. The work confirms that utilising a variable speed pump at lower pump speeds allows greater deviations from the design BEP without jeopardising the safety of the pump and should be considered for industrial use.

The dynamic response of a railway track under a moving train in the presence of adefective wheel is studied. The goal of this study is to establish an efficient dynamicmodel for wheel tread defect analysis. The wheel irregularities which influence the trackvibration characteristics are classified in 2 major types: periodic out-of-roundness andlocal defect. While the periodic irregularities are distributed all around the wheel, thelocal defects such as wheelflats have more impact on the dynamic response. The influenceof each defect depends on its geometrical characteristics and the model parameters. Theseparate effects of different irregularities have been the subject of many previousresearches. However the contribution of each defect to a coupling of irregularities wasnot as much considered. For a comprehensive analysis of all types of defects, an efficientglobal model is presented. It includes 3 sub-models for vehicle, contact force and track.The time-domain responses of the model are evaluated in comparison to those of a finiteelement model. It is shown that the semi-analytical model of the track keeps a goodprecision while being less time consuming. The results of the global model for differenttypes of wheel irregularities are presented.

The vibrations undergone by men are a well-known and widely studied risk factor in the industrial world. They are transmitted to the whole body or the upper limbs and they are measured, and limited, according to international standards. Disorders resulting from exposure to vibration are varied in nature: osteoarticular, muscular, vascular, and neurological. In this context, an European Directive 2002/44/EC to the protection of workers exposed to vibration, precises thresholds for vibration exposures and defines the procedure for risk prevention. Nevertheless, the effect of vibration is little studied in sports despite the ubiquity of these. Vibration can induce discomfort, degrading performance or causing musculoskeletal disorders. This paper makes an overview of the studies involving the vibrations during cycling. At first, this paper will summarize the different standards and guidelines relating vibration in humans, which present a guide for the measurement and evaluation of the vibration and exposure limits. Secondly, this paper presents a state of the art vibration effects: (i) the physiological and pathological disorders in athletes, (ii) and the performance. A third part will be devoted to the synthesis of numerical studies that represent the biodynamic response and help to predict the effects of human body vibration. Finally, new research and innovations will be discussed based on studies in other sports.

La résistance mécanique des interfaces entre deux matériaux différents constitue un problème critique, tant d'un point de vue fondamental que d'un point de vue appliqué. De fait, la décohésion interfaciale est un mécanisme fréquent de défaillance des composants multimatériaux ou des pièces revêtues, d'usage de plus en plus courant dans les technologies avancées actuelles.Un certain nombre de considérations générales sont exposées sur les phénomènes de décohésion et la mécanique de la rupture interfaciale, dans l'objectif d'en déduire les critères qui assurent une validité optimale aux résultats des essais mécaniques de mesure d'adhérence. Parmi les techniques expérimentales existantes, l'accent est mis sur celles qui permettent une détermination fiable de l'énergie de rupture interfaciale. Le cas de l'essai de gonflement-décollement est développé. Les résultats obtenus par cette technique sur plusieurs systèmes couches/substrats sont présentés et commentés.

This paper presents the analysis of the instabilities inception in a transoniccentrifugal compressor for different rotation speeds. The analysis was conducted fromexperimental results obtained with unsteady pressure sensors implanted in the inducer,vaneless diffuser and vaned diffuser. Beyond the stability limit the compressor entersinto a deep surge without any precursor, whatever the speed. The surge process isinitiated in the vaned diffuser by a massive boundary layer separation. For low speeds,together with the surge which remains triggered in the diffuser, aerodynamic instabilitiesare detected in the inducer. These instabilities can be understood as “tip clearancerotating disturbances” because they are generated at the leading edge of the impeller mainblades and move along the tip clearance trajectory.

Cette étude concerne les écoulements de type rotor–stator à couches limitesséparées soumis à un flux axial. Suivant l'analyse faite par Schlichting [H. Schlichting, Boundary-layer theory, 7th edition, McGraw-Hill Book Company, New-York, 1979] dans lecas d'un disque tournant de rayon infini, on détermine des lois analytiques simples permettant deprévoir le coefficient d'entraînement K du fluide à partir des paramètres de contrôle(taux de rotation, flux, espace interdisque, taux de prérotation) pour divers régimes d'écoulement (laminaire ou turbulent) et différentes configurations (géométrie, rotor lisse, rugueux ou aileté). Cette approche analytique est validée par d'extensives mesures de vitesse et de pression.

In this paper, an analytical solution is developed for free vibration analysis of conicalfiber metal shells. In order to find constitutive relations, the assumptions of thinshells are used and the governing equations are based on Love’s theory. The Galerkin methodis employed to solve the governing equations in which beam functions are used toapproximate the mode shapes. Using beam functions enables us to assess the effects ofdifferent boundary conditions on the frequency response of the shells. Numericalcomparisons of the present and previously published results confirm the accuracy of thecurrent approach. Additionally, the influences of geometrical parameters and embeddingaluminum plies in different layers of the structure on natural frequency of the conicalshells with various boundary conditions are investigated. It can be observed that the morethe aluminum plies are used, the greater natural frequency of the structure will bereached. Except the clamped-free boundary conditions, the results also indicate that ifthe aluminum plies are embedded in the top and bottom layers of the laminate, naturalfrequency reaches its maximum value.

Par une étude de stabilité linéaire nous nous proposons d’analyser un écoulement dans unecavité cylindrique remplie de fluide, dont le fond tourne. Le rayon de la cavité est granddevant la hauteur de fluide. Une étude expérimentale récente [S. Poncet, M.P. Chauve, J.Flow Vis. Image Process 14 (2007) 85–105] a mis en évidence une instabilité aux motifsparticulièrement intéressants. Dans ce travail, nous considérons une modélisation de lasurface libre plane (conditions de symétrie) afin de comparer les résultats expérimentauxet notre étude de stabilité linéaire. Nous discuterons de la pertinence de cettemodélisation, c’est-à-dire de la nécessité de prendre en compte la déformation de lasurface.

Evaluation of the dynamic properties of quasi-brittle materials is of the utmostimportance for assessing the vulnerability of structural components under dynamic loadingssuch as collision or explosion. To investigate the dynamic strength of (quasi)-brittlematerial, three-point bending tests are performed on a modified Split Hopkinson PressureBar. Such an apparatus is often used with pre-cracked specimen to determine the dynamicstress intensity factor of metallic materials. With quasi-brittle materials special carehas to be paid to the processing of the test since fracture can occur at very low strains.The specimen remains in an out-of equilibrium state and fracture occurs before the supportreactions appear as if it was a support-free impact test. A special non-equilibriumanalytical approach has been developed to process the tests. Finite-element simulationsare used to assess relevance of the proposed analysis for normalized short beams.Experimental results on brick and concrete samples showing a significant dynamic strengthincrease are presented.

In mass production, the customer defines the constraints of assembled products byfunctional and quality requirements. The functional requirements are expressed by thedesigner through the chosen dimensions, which are linked by linear equations in the caseof a simple stack-up or non-linear equations in a more complex case. The customer qualityrequirements are defined by the maximum allowable number of out-of-tolerance assemblies.The aim of this paper is to prove that quality requirements can be accurately predicted inthe design stage thanks to a better knowledge of the statistical characteristics of theprocess. The authors propose an approach named Advanced Probability based ToleranceAnalysis (APTA), assessing the defect probability (called PD)that the assembled product has of not conforming to the functional requirements. Thisprobability depends on the requirements (nominal value, tolerance, capability levels) setby the designer for each part of the product and on the knowledge of production devicesthat will produce batches with variable statistical characteristics (mean value, standarddeviation). The interest of the proposed methodology is shown for linear and non-linearequations related to industrial products manufactured by the RADIALL SA Company.

Cet article prsente une application de la recherche de forme aux gilets de sauvetagegonflables. La recherche de forme est le nom gnrique dsignant le processus de conceptionde la forme globale des structures lgres instables telles que les structures gonflables.L’tat d’quilibre statique des gilets gonflables est recherch pour analyser leur forme, levolume contenu et la localisation des zones de plis. La mthode de relaxation dynamiqueavec amortissement cintique permet d’viter le problme de singularit de la matrice deraideur et le problme d’instabilit locale dans les zones de plis. Sa rapidit deconvergence est trs dpendante de la formulation de la matrice des masses. Dans cetarticle, plusieurs expressions des masses sont testes et leurs performances compares entreelles sur un cas de gilet de sauvetage gonflable.

Cet article propose une évaluation de l'analyse cepstrale dans le suivi vibratoire des machines tournantes afin de mettre en œuvre une maintenance prévisionnelle. Après avoir rappelé les propriétés du cepstre pour un diagnostic vibratoire, nous précisons les valeurs de paramétrage des mesures, afin d'effectuer une analyse efficace. Nos travaux sont validés par deux applications complémentaires réalisées en milieu industriel: l'une sur un multiplicateur tournant à grande vitesse, l'autre sur un réducteur tournant à très faible vitesse. Le défaut recherché est un écaillage de denture, mais la comparaison suivant deux directions de mesurage des signaux des accéléromètres a également permis dans la deuxième application de détecter un autre type d'avarie.

Une modélisation de l'indentation des structures sandwichs à peaux métallique et âme en nid d'abeille est présentée dans cette étude. Cette recherche s'effectue dans le cadre plus général de l'étude de l'impact basse vitesse/basse énergie sur les structures sandwichs en considérant que l'équivalence statique/dynamique est valable pour les structures et gammes d'impact étudiés. Le point-clef de la modélisation est de pouvoir représenter de manière simple et robuste numériquement le comportement non-linéaire du nid d'abeille à l'écrasement. Afin de décrire de manière plus explicite que dans la littérature les plissements du nid d'abeille constatés expérimentalement, une étude phénoménologique est d'abord réalisée. Il s'avère que le comportement à l'écrasement est piloté par les arêtes verticales de la structure cellulaire. Un modèle analytique simple d'indentation du nid d'abeille seul peut alors être proposé. Il est in fine basé uniquement sur une loi de comportement obtenue par un essai de compression uniforme. Ce modèle permet une très bonne simulation de l'indentation des structures nid d'abeille seules pour diverses géométries d'indenteur. Dans un deuxième temps, l'indentation des structures sandwichs à peaux métalliques et âme nid d'abeille est étudiée. Un modèle éléments finis est proposé dans lequel le nid d'abeille est modélisé par une grille de ressorts non-linéaires verticaux. Les ressorts représentent les arêtes verticales du nid d'abeille. En utilisant la loi expérimentale obtenue lors de l'essai de compression uniforme, il est alors aussi possible de corréler correctement les lois de contact d'essais d'indentation statique de structure sandwich à nid d'abeille NomexTM et à peaux métalliques. Les résultats obtenus par cette approche pourront a priori être étendus au cas des structures sandwichs à peaux composites et à la détermination de la résistance après impact de ces structures.

This paper introduces a dynamic classification method inspired by DBSCAN clustering method for machine condition monitoring in general and for bearings in particular. This method has been developed for two purposes; first to monitor the health condition of a bearing in real time and second to study the behavior of defected rolling element bearing. To fulfill those purposes, the temporal indicator RMS (Root Mean Square) has been chosen as an indicator of the bearing health condition; this indicator has been computed from signals extracted from an experimental bench by two piezoelectric sensors placed radially and axially. The decision upon the right classification method was taken after a comparative study between two classical of the clustering methods (K-means and Density Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise DBSCAN), which led to the conclusion that DBSCAN is more adapted to vibratory signals. DBSCAN was re-adapted to follow any changing in bearings behavior.

Cet article représente une synthèse des études menées au CEA/SRMA, en collaboration avec l'ENSMP, sur la fissuration en relaxation (F.E.R.) des aciers inoxydables austénitiques. Initialement, l'étude a porté sur l'endommagement des Zones Affectées (Z.A.) des soudures en aciers stabilisés au titane de type AISI 321. Une démarche de simulation expérimentale de Z.A. par des traitements thermo-mécaniques a été mise en place. Un essai de relaxation sur éprouvette CT a également été mis au point afin de reproduire en laboratoire ce type de fissuration. Outre la validation de cette démarche, il a été montré que l'écrouissage joue un rôle prépondérant sur la fragilisation intergranulaire et que le vieillissement atténue cette fragilisation contrairement à ce qui est couramment admis dans la littérature.Cette remise en cause du rôle premier de la précipitation des carbonitrures de titane permet d'élargir le champ d'investigation aux aciers non stabilisés pour lesquels il existe un certain nombre de cas de fissuration similaires à ceux attribués à la F.E.R. En appliquant la démarche précédente à des aciers de type AISI 316 et AISI 304, on montre aussi que l'écrouissage est un facteur de fragilisation intergranulaire.Parallèlement, on établit, par approche locale de la rupture, un modèle d'endommagement intergranulaire utilisable pour l'évaluation du risque de fissuration sur des composants réels.
