1. Introduction. The purpose of this paper is to correct a number of points in an earlier paper (1) of the same title, and to prove a number of new results which supplement those given in that paper. The notation and definitions of this paper are those of (1).

1. Introduction. Let (X, C) be a Riesz space (or vector lattice) with positive cone C. A subset B of X is said to be solid if it follows from |x| ≤ |b| with b in B that x is in B (where |x| denotes the supremum of x and − x). The solid hull of B (absolute envelope of B in the terminology of Roberts (2)) is denoted to be the smallest solid set containing B, and is denoted by SB. A locally convex Hausdorff topology on (X, C) is called a locally solid topology if admits a neighbourhood-base of 0 consisting of solid and convex sets in X; and (X, C, ), where is a locally solid topology, is called a locally convex Riesz space.

In 1949, Meyer-König (5) introduced the so-called Sα-method of summability which is one of a family of transformations including the Euler, Borel and Taylor methods. We have called a linear partial differential operator P almost hypoelliptic in some of the variables if the distribution u is strongly regular in those variables in every open subset where this is true of Pu. In an earlier paper (l) we have characterised almost hypoelliptic operators with constant coefficients. Following techniques of Hörmander (2) and Yoshikawa(5) we obtain in this paper some a priori inequalities for almost hypoelliptic operators and derive results about the solvability of the adjoint operator P*. Our notation for various standard distribution spaces and multi-indices follows Hörmander (2).

If one changes at random the signs of the Fourier coefficients of an L2 function the result is still the sequence of Fourier coefficients of an L2 function. L2 is the only LP space with this property; in fact if a sequence remains a Fourier transform for every insertion of ± signs then it is really the transform of an L2 function ((6), p. 215, Theorem 8·14). Our main theorem is a version of this principle, for sequences defined on suitable subsets of a group; it is phrased in terms of large sets of choices of ± signs rather than all sequences of ± signs.

Introduction. Continued fractions of the form are called Hurwitzian if b1, …, bh, are positive integers, ƒ1(x), …, ƒk(x) are polynomials with rational coefficients which take positive integral values for x = 0, 1, 2, …, and at least one of the polynomials is not constant. f1(x), …, fk(x) are said to form a quasi-period.

1. Introduction. A well-known theorem of Siegel(5) states that there exist only a finite number of integer points on any curve of genus ≥ 1. Siegel's proof, published in 1929, depended, inter alia, on his earlier work concerning rational approximations to algebraic numbers and on Weil's recently established generalization of Mordell's finite basis theorem. Both of these possess a certain non-effective character and thus it is clear that Siegel's argument cannot provide an algorithm for determining all the integer points on the curve. The purpose of the present paper is to establish such an algorithm in the case of curves of genus 1.

The object of this note is the following theorem together with a table of the (1 + i)n division points for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 on the elliptic curve y2 = x3 − Dx which has complex multiplication by i = √(−1).

In a recent paper in this journal(1) Baker obtained a result giving effectively computable bounds on the simultaneous approximation of certain numbers of the form (ab-1)nj/n by rational numbers of the formpιq-1 where a, b, n, the nι and q are positive integers while the pι are non-negative integers. In this paper we shall obtain explicit bounds on the simultaneous approximation of certain numbers of the form rβ1, …, rβn where β and each rι, 1 ≤ j ≤ n, are positive rational numbers.

In this paper we have evaluated some integrals involving Fox's Η-function and employed them to establish some expansion formulae for the Η-function involving exponential functions. Some results recently given by MacRobert (7) and Kesarwani (5) have been shown as particular cases.

1. Introduction. The object of this paper is to obtain some generating functions for Appell functions with the help of fractional derivatives. The results are general in character and include as particular cases some of the results given earlier by Mexiner (3) and the author (4, 5, 6).

It is well known (Watson, A treatise on Bessel functions) that if Jν(z) is a Bessel function of the first kind, and A is a real constant, then all roots of the equation are either real or purely imaginary.

0. Our aim in this note is to obtain theorems about measures, perfect sets, and transforms in the group G of p-adic integers (for a prime p), related to recent developments in compact Abelian groups (6, 7) and again to Fourier analysis in Euclidean space (2–5).

Lanczos(1, 2) has considered the shifted eigenvalue problem where C is a (p × q) matrix of rank r, CH is its hermitean conjugate and u, v are column vectors of orders p, q respectively.
