Some aspects of the field equations of the conformal theory of gravitation put forward by Hoyle and Narlikar are studied. The field equations are conformally invariant and one can use a particular conformal frame to simplify the equations, since all conformal frames are regarded as physically equivalent. However, some conformal frames may be unsuitable in some regions of space-time, and with the use of such a frame one may get an unphysical solution. The use of conformal frames and the difficulties involved are illustrated by considering a given physical situation in two different conformal frames. The physical situation is that of two isolated particles. A static solution for this situation is obtained in both frames, and it is shown that a property that is quite unphysical in one frame transforms into a physically reasonable property in the other.

The problem of the diffusion and convection of heat from an arbitrarily placed heat source in the potential convection field due to uniform streaming past an infinite circular cylinder is considered. Solutions are obtained for the regions inside and outside the cylinder and are given in terms of Mathieu Functions. An appendix giving the required properties of these functions is included.

The problem of the diffusion and convection of heat from an arbitrarily placed source in the convection field due to a fluid producing dipole is considered. The solution for the temperature at any point in the fluid is found analytically. The isotherms and lines of constant flux are plotted.

It is shown that around each point of a C3 static vacuum space-time there is a neighbourhood in which the metric is, in a certain suitable coordinate system, analytic. If two of these neighbourhoods overlap, then the transformation betweea these suitable coordinate systems is analytic (in the overlapping domain).

The problem of the diffusion and convection of heat in two-dimensional, incompressible flow past a circular cylinder is considered. Solutions are found for the temperature at any point exterior to the cylinder in terms of the boundary conditions on the surface and two particular boundary conditions are considered.

This paper is a first investigation into the short-wave asymptotic motion due to a cylinder heaving on water of finite constant depth, and we present a non-rigorous method for an arbitrary smooth cylinder which intersects the free surface normally. The reduction of the potential problem by the use of two auxifiary potentials, introduced by the subtraction of formal solutions constructed from the limit potential, enables us to find (i) an integral expression, by using a subsidiary approximate Green's function, for the potential in the far field which is evaluated after making plausible assumptions about the asymptotic value of the first auxiliary potential on the cylinder and below the free surface; and (ii) a form for the virtual mass, using the second auxiliary potential whose value on the cylinder is deduced from that of the first to which it is related. Thus we obtain the asymptotic evaluation of the coefficients describing the wave-making and virtual mass of the heaving cylinder, which depend on the limit potential and have no formal dependence on the depth of the bottom.

Hazebroek's problem of a finite line-source in an infinite elastic medium is reconsidered. Here the object is to present a simpler method of solution by treating bhe line-source as equivalent to an appropriate distribution of point sources over the surface of a prolate spheroid which degenerates into this line in the limit when its minor axis tends to zero. This is achieved by using the property of Green's functions. The solution thus obtained is verified to be identical with that derived by Hazebroek.

This paper continues the investigation into the short-wave asymptotic motion due to a cylinder heaving on water of finite constant depth, and we now present a rigorous method for the special case of a half-immersed circular cylinder. The aim is to justify, in one particular case, those assumptions made in a previous paper giving a non-rigorous method for an arbitrary smooth cylinder which intersects the free surface normally, concerning the asymptotic values on the cylinder of the two related auxiliary potentials which were introduced to enable an evaluation of the coefficients describing wave-making and virtual mass. This is done by constructing an integral equation of the second kind whose kernel is small and deducing the leading term in the iteration solution. The method is an extension of the method for infinite depth and it is found that there is a simple relationship between the kernels. In conclusion, computations for these asymptotic results are presented and compared with the trend of known non-asymptotic results.

Consideration is given to the steady flow of a micropolar liquid near a rigid boundary. It is shown that while micro-inertia itself is not important, nevertheless, some properties of the microstructure do play a vital rôle in determining the structure of the boundary layer. The Kármán—Polhausen method is used to provide an estimate of the shear stress at the boundary, and detailed calculations are given for flow near stagnation. The important significance of the standard length of the micropolar liquid is demonstrated for this flow, as for other flows in this medium.

Small variations in the elastic parameters of a solid medium give rise to scattering of elastic waves and hence to a reduction in their amplitudes. The attenuation coefficients associated with this process have been calculated for surface waves.

Expressions have been derived for waves with wavelengths long compared with the mean wavelength of the variation of the elastic parameters in space. The attenuation coefficients were found to be the same as if the attenuating mechanism were a particular type of visco-elasticity.

A problem in fluid mechanics which has received some attention recently concerns the emergence of an incompressible Newtonian fluid jet from a uniform tube into an inviscid atmosphere. Both the axisymmetric case of a circular tube and the two-dimensional case of flow from between parallel planes are of interest. When the jet falls vertically under gravity, the motion far downstream is dominated by gravity and the expansion procedures of Clarke (3), and Kaye and Vale (10) give details of the flow in this region. When the flow near the exit is at a high Reynolds number, it is reasonable to expect the flow appropriate to that in an infinite tube to prevail right up to the exit (except, perhaps, near the point of discontinuity of the boundary conditions). With this assumption, Duda and Vrentas(5) use a numerical technique to solve for the flow in the axisymmetric jet beyond the exit, both with and without gravity acting in the axial direction. In the absence of gravity, the jet can be expected to attain a constant width some distance downstream, and at high Reynolds numbers the above assumption is sufficient to allow a mass and momentum balance to determine the contraction ratio of the jet as for the axisymmetric case, and for the two-dimensional case (see Harmon (8)). By treating the dynamics of the jet as those of a boundary layer growing on the free surface, Goren and Wronski (6) and Tillett (18) are able to examine the flow in greater detail.

We consider some elastostatic and related potential problems in which an unbounded uniform medium contains a plane elliptic disc as an inhomogeneity. Various appropriate conditions on the disc and at infinity are specified. These problems have many physical applications. In the elastostatic case the disc can be a crack or rigid inclusion, for example. The potential problems include the classical one of finding the electrostatic field around an elliptic disc charged to a given potential.

In a previous paper (11) refractive index profiles capable of yielding exact solutions for vertically polarized electromagnetic waves propagating in horizontally stratified isotropic media were derived systematically. The present work extends the method to deal with anisotropic media in which propagation is transverse to a horizontally applied static magnetic field. The relevance to ELF radio wave propagation in the terrestrial ionosphere is noted.

This note is concerned with one-dimensional viscoelastic materials. Experiments show that for linear materials the relaxation functions are monotone decreasing functions of the time. This monotonic property has not, as far as I am aware, been characterized and in this note I provide a characterization formulated in terms of an assertion about the work done on the material over certain closed paths in strain space. More explicitly, consider any path in strain space which starts from equilibrium and arrives at the strain e at time t. We can now take the material around a closed path by either retracing the given path immediately or we can do it by holding the strain fixed at value e for a time r and then retracing the given path. Let us call the total work done on the material on the first closed path w(0) and on the second w(r). In general, because of the memory of the material, w(t) ≠ w(0). If it is true that w(r) ≥ w(0), whatever value r ≥ 0 has and whatever the initial strain path starting from equilibrium, we say that work is always increased by delay on retraced paths. The characterization proved here is that if G(·) is the relaxation function, with equilibrium elastic modulus G(∞), then G(·) −G(∞) is completely monotone if and only if work is always increased by delay on retraced paths.†

A procedure is described to determine phase velocities of a circular helix. Computations are made for three helix configurations using the method of internal constraints. The results so obtained are compared with the results obtained by using the elementary theory proposed by J. H. Michell, and the extended elementary theory proposed by A. B. Basset.

A method of deriving power series expansions for the correlation functions of lattice systems is described. The concept of lattice constants for rooted graphs is introduced and it is shown how the correlation functions can be expanded in terms of the lattice constants for connected graphs only. The weight functions in the expansions depend on correlation functions for finite systems and may, therefore, be determined by computer methods. This work is an extension of a method previously developed for the free energy. Applications to spin systems, percolation problems and the lattice gas are considered and sum rules for the weight functions are given.
