The process of classifying possible symmetry-breaking bifurcations requires a computation involving the subgroups and irreducible representations of the original symmetry group. It is shown how this calculation can be automated using a group theory package such as GAP. This enables a number of new results to be obtained for larger symmetry groups, where manual computation is impractical. Examples of symmetric and alternating groups are given, and the method is also applied to the spatial symmetry-breaking of periodic patterns observed in experiments.

We compute the conjugacy classes of elements and the character tables of the maximal parabolic subgroups of the simple Ree groups 2F4(q2). For one of the maximal parabolic subgroups, we find an irreducible character of the unipotent radical that does not extend to its inertia subgroup.

Bipartivity is an important network concept that can be applied to nodes, edges and communities. Here we focus on directed networks and look for subnetworks made up of two distinct groups of nodes, connected by ‘one-way’ links. We show that a spectral approach can be used to find hidden substructures of this form. Theoretical support is given for the idealized case where there is limited overlap between subnetworks. Numerical experiments show that the approach is robust to spurious and missing edges. A key application of this work is in the analysis of high-throughput gene expression data, and we give an example where a biologically meaningful directed bipartite subnetwork is found from a cancer microarray dataset.

Let G be a group generated by k elements, G=〈g1,…,gk〉, with group operations (multiplication, inversion and comparison with identity) performed by a black box. We prove that one can test whether the group G is abelian at a cost of O(k) group operations. On the other hand, we show that a deterministic approach requires Ω(k2) group operations.

Let C be an arbitrary smooth algebraic curve of genus g over a large finite field F. The authors of this paper revisit fast addition algorithms in the Jacobian of C due to Khuri-Makdisi [math.NT/0409209, to appear in Mathematics of Computation]. The algorithms, which reduce to linear algebra in vector spaces of dimension O(g) once |K| ≫ g and which asymptotically require O(g2.376) field operations using fast linear algebra, are shown to perform efficiently even for certain low genus curves. Specifically, the authors provide explicit formulae for performing the group law on Jacobians of C3,4 curves of genus 3. They show show that, typically, the addition of two distinct elements in the Jacobian of a C3,4 curve requires 117 multiplications and 2 inversions in K, and an element can be doubled using 129 multiplications and 2 inversions in K. This represents an improvement of approximately 20% over previous methods.

In this paper we construct the maximal subgroups of geometric type of the orthogonal groups in dimension d over GF(q) in O(d3+d2log q+log qlog log q) finite field operations.

In the study of the rational cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on a smooth surface, it is particularly interesting to understand the characteristic classes of the tautological bundles and the tangent bundle. In this note we pursue this study. We first collect all results appearing separately in the literature and prove some new formulas using Ohmoto's results on orbifold Chern classes on Hilbert schemes. We also explain the algorithmic counterpart of the topic: the cohomology space is governed by a vertex algebra that can be used to compute characteristic classes. We present an implementation of the vertex operators in the rewriting logic system MAUDE, and address observations and conjectures obtained after symbolic computations.

One way to study certain classes of polynomials is by considering examples that are attached to combinatorial objects. Any graph $G$ has an associated reciprocal polynomial $R_{G}$, and with two particular classes of reciprocal polynomials in mind one can ask the questions: (a) when is $R_{G}$ a product of cyclotomic polynomials (giving the cyclotomic graphs)? (b) when does $R_{G}$ have the minimal polynomial of a Salem number as its only non-cyclotomic factor (the non-trivial Salem graphs)? Cyclotomic graphs were classified by Smith (Combinatorial structures and their applications, Proceedings of Calgary International Conference, Calgary, AB, 1969 (eds R. Guy, H. Hanani, H. Saver and J. Schönheim; Gordon and Breach, New York, 1970) 403–406); the maximal connected ones are known as Smith graphs. Salem graphs are ‘spectrally close’ to being cyclotomic, in that nearly all their eigenvalues are in the critical interval $[-2,2]$. On the other hand, Salem graphs do not need to be ‘combinatorially close’ to being cyclotomic: the largest cyclotomic induced subgraph might be comparatively tiny.

We define an $m$-Salem graph to be a connected Salem graph $G$ for which $m$ is minimal such that there exists an induced cyclotomic subgraph of $G$ that has $m$ fewer vertices than $G$. The $1$-Salem subgraphs are both spectrally close and combinatorially close to being cyclotomic. Moreover, every Salem graph contains a $1$-Salem graph as an induced subgraph, so these $1$-Salem graphs provide some necessary substructure of all Salem graphs. The main result of this paper is a complete combinatorial description of all $1$-Salem graphs: in the non-bipartite case there are $25$ infinite families and $383$ sporadic examples.

We consider plane Cremona maps with proper base points and the base ideal generated by the linear system of forms defining the map. The object of this work is to study the link between the algebraic properties of the base ideal and those of the ideal of these points fattened by the virtual multiplicities arising from the linear system. We reveal conditions which naturally regulate this association, with particular emphasis on the homological side. While most classical numerical inequalities concern the three highest virtual multiplicities, here we emphasize also the role of one single highest multiplicity. In this vein we describe classes of Cremona maps for large and small values of the highest virtual multiplicity. We also deal with the delicate question as to when is the base ideal non-saturated and consider the structure of its saturation.

Brauer classes of a global field can be represented by cyclic algebras. Effective constructions of such algebras and a maximal order therein are given for $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$, excluding cases of wild ramification. As part of the construction, we also obtain a new description of subfields of cyclotomic function fields.

This paper contains some applications of the description of knot diagrams by genus, and Gabai’s methods of disk decomposition. We show that there exists no genus one knot of canonical genus 2, and that canonical genus 2 fiber surfaces realize almost every Alexander polynomial only finitely many times (partially confirming a conjecture of Neuwirth).

The problem of finding a nontrivial factor of a polynomial $f(x)$ over a finite field ${\mathbb{F}}_q$ has many known efficient, but randomized, algorithms. The deterministic complexity of this problem is a famous open question even assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis (GRH). In this work we improve the state of the art by focusing on prime degree polynomials; let $n$ be the degree. If $(n-1)$ has a ‘large’ $r$-smooth divisor $s$, then we find a nontrivial factor of $f(x)$ in deterministic $\mbox{poly}(n^r,\log q)$ time, assuming GRH and that $s=\Omega (\sqrt{n/2^r})$. Thus, for $r=O(1)$ our algorithm is polynomial time. Further, for $r=\Omega (\log \log n)$ there are infinitely many prime degrees $n$ for which our algorithm is applicable and better than the best known, assuming GRH. Our methods build on the algebraic-combinatorial framework of $m$-schemes initiated by Ivanyos, Karpinski and Saxena (ISSAC 2009). We show that the $m$-scheme on $n$ points, implicitly appearing in our factoring algorithm, has an exceptional structure, leading us to the improved time complexity. Our structure theorem proves the existence of small intersection numbers in any association scheme that has many relations, and roughly equal valencies and indistinguishing numbers.

The number of non-isomorphic n-fold branched coverings of a given closed surface can be determined by the number of nonisomorphic n-fold unbranched coverings of the surface and the number of nonisomorphic connected n-fold graph coverings of a suitable bouquet of circles. A similar enumeration can also be done for regular branched coverings. Some explicit enumerations are also possible.

We develop algorithms to turn quotients of rings of integers into effective Euclidean rings by giving polynomial algorithms for all fundamental ring operations. In addition, we study normal forms for modules over such rings and their behavior under certain quotients. We illustrate the power of our ideas in a new modular normal form algorithm for modules over rings of integers, vastly outperforming classical algorithms.

We determine the conditions under which singular values of multiple $\eta $-quotients of square-free level, not necessarily prime to six, yield class invariants; that is, algebraic numbers in ring class fields of imaginary-quadratic number fields. We show that the singular values lie in subfields of the ring class fields of index ${2}^{{k}^{\prime } - 1} $ when ${k}^{\prime } \geq 2$ primes dividing the level are ramified in the imaginary-quadratic field, which leads to faster computations of elliptic curves with prescribed complex multiplication. The result is generalised to singular values of modular functions on ${ X}_{0}^{+ } (p)$ for $p$ prime and ramified.

We compute the complete set of candidates for the zeta function of a K$3$ surface over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$ consistent with the Weil and Tate conjectures, as well as the complete set of zeta functions of smooth quartic surfaces over $\mathbb{F}_{2}$. These sets differ substantially, but we do identify natural subsets which coincide. This gives some numerical evidence towards a Honda–Tate theorem for transcendental zeta functions of K$3$ surfaces; such a result would refine a recent theorem of Taelman, in which one must allow an uncontrolled base field extension.

We propose an algorithm to verify the $p$-part of the class number for a number field $K$, provided $K$ is totally real and an abelian extension of the rational field $\mathbb{Q}$, and $p$ is any prime. On fields of degree 4 or higher, this algorithm has been shown heuristically to be faster than classical algorithms that compute the entire class number, with improvement increasing with larger field degrees.

We address the problem of evaluating an $L$-function when only a small number of its Dirichlet coefficients are known. We use the approximate functional equation in a new way and find that it is possible to evaluate the $L$-function more precisely than one would expect from the standard approach. The method, however, requires considerably more computational effort to achieve a given accuracy than would be needed if more Dirichlet coefficients were available.
