Let $E/F$ be a quadratic unramified extension of non-archimedean local fields and $\mathbb H$ a simply connected semisimple algebraic group defined and split over F. We establish general results (multiplicities, test vectors) on ${\mathbb H} (F)$-distinguished Iwahori-spherical representations of ${\mathbb H} (E)$. For discrete series Iwahori-spherical representations of ${\mathbb H} (E)$, we prove a numerical criterion of ${\mathbb H} (F)$-distinction. As an application, we classify the ${\mathbb H} (F)$-distinguished discrete series representations of ${\mathbb H} (E)$ corresponding to degree $1$ characters of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra.

Given a general polarized $K3$ surface $S\subset \mathbb P^g$ of genus $g\le 14$, we study projections of minimal degree and their variational structure. In particular, we prove that the degree of irrationality of all such surfaces is at most $4$, and that for $g=7,8,9,11$ there are no rational maps of degree $3$ induced by the primitive linear system. Our methods combine vector bundle techniques à la Lazarsfeld with derived category tools and also make use of the rich theory of singular curves on $K3$ surfaces.

We give a generators-and-relations description of the reduced versions of quiver quantum toroidal algebras, which act on the spaces of BPS states associated to (noncompact) toric Calabi–Yau threefolds X. As an application, we obtain a description of the K-theoretic Hall algebra of (the quiver with potential associated to) X, modulo torsion.

We study the behaviour of Kauffman bracket skein modules of 3-manifolds under gluing along surfaces. For this we extend this notion to $3$-manifolds with marking consisting of open intervals and circles in the boundary. The new module is called the stated skein module.

The first results concern non-injectivity of certain natural maps defined when forming connected sums along spheres or disks. These maps are injective for surfaces or for generic quantum parameter, but we show that in general they are not when the quantum parameter is a root of 1. We show that when the quantum parameter is a root of 1, the empty skein is zero in a connected sum where each constituent manifold has non-empty marking. We also prove various non-injectivity results for the Chebyshev-Frobenius map and the map induced by deleting marked balls.

We then interpret stated skein modules as a monoidal symmetric functor from a category of “decorated cobordisms” to a category of algebras and their bimodules. We apply this to deduce properties of stated skein modules as a Van-Kampen like theorem, a computation through Heegaard decompositions and a relation to Hochshild homology for trivial circle bundles over surfaces.

We show that for $\mathrm {C}^*$-algebras with the global Glimm property, the rank of every operator can be realized as the rank of a soft operator, that is, an element whose hereditary sub-$\mathrm {C}^*$-algebra has no nonzero, unital quotients. This implies that the radius of comparison of such a $\mathrm {C}^*$-algebra is determined by the soft part of its Cuntz semigroup.

Under a mild additional assumption, we show that every Cuntz class dominates a (unique) largest soft Cuntz class. This defines a retract from the Cuntz semigroup onto its soft part, and it follows that the covering dimensions of these semigroups differ by at most $1$.

In this paper, we investigate the twisted GGP conjecture for certain tempered representations using the theta correspondence and establish some special cases, namely when the L-parameter of the unitary group is the sum of conjugate-dual characters of the appropriate sign.

We introduce a new invariant, the conductor exponent, of a generic irreducible Casselman–Wallach representation of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n(F)$, where F is an archimedean local field, that quantifies the extent to which this representation may be ramified. We also determine a distinguished vector, the newform, occurring with multiplicity one in this representation, with the complexity of this vector measured in a natural way by the conductor exponent. Finally, we show that the newform is a test vector for $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n \times \operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n$ and $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n \times \operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_{n - 1}$ Rankin–Selberg integrals when the second representation is unramified. This theory parallels an analogous nonarchimedean theory due to Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro, and Shalika; combined, this completes a global theory of newforms for automorphic representations of $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n$ over number fields. By-products of the proofs include new proofs of Stade’s formulæ and a new resolution of the test vector problem for archimedean Godement–Jacquet zeta integrals.

Given a polarised abelian variety over a number field, we provide totally explicit upper bounds for the cardinality of the rational points whose Néron-Tate height is less than a small threshold. These imply new estimates for the number of torsion points as well as the minimal height of a non-torsion point. Our bounds involve the Faltings height and dimension of the abelian variety together with the degrees of the polarisation and the number field but we also get a stronger statement where we use certain successive minima associated to the period lattice at a fixed archimedean place, in the spirit of a result of David for elliptic curves.

Let $\eta $ be [-11pc] [-7pc]a closed real 1-form on a closed Riemannian n-manifold $(M,g)$. Let $d_z$, $\delta _z$ and $\Delta _z$ be the induced Witten’s type perturbations of the de Rham derivative and coderivative and the Laplacian, parametrized by $z=\mu +i\nu \in \mathbb C$ ($\mu ,\nu \in \mathbb {R}$, $i=\sqrt {-1}$). Let $\zeta (s,z)$ be the zeta function of $s\in \mathbb {C}$, defined as the meromorphic extension of the function $\zeta (s,z)=\operatorname {Str}({\eta \wedge }\,\delta _z\Delta _z^{-s})$ for $\Re s\gg 0$. We prove that $\zeta (s,z)$ is smooth at $s=1$ and establish a formula for $\zeta (1,z)$ in terms of the associated heat semigroup. For a class of Morse forms, $\zeta (1,z)$ converges to some $\mathbf {z}\in \mathbb {R}$ as $\mu \to +\infty $, uniformly on $\nu $. We describe $\mathbf {z}$ in terms of the instantons of an auxiliary Smale gradient-like vector field X and the Mathai–Quillen current on $TM$ defined by g. Any real 1-cohomology class has a representative $\eta $ satisfying the hypothesis. If n is even, we can prescribe any real value for $\mathbf {z}$ by perturbing g, $\eta $ and X and achieve the same limit as $\mu \to -\infty $. This is used to define and describe certain tempered distributions induced by g and $\eta $. These distributions appear in another publication as contributions from the preserved leaves in a trace formula for simple foliated flows, giving a solution to a problem stated by C. Deninger.

We show that, for any prime p, there exist absolutely simple abelian varieties over $\mathbb {Q}$ with arbitrarily large p-torsion in their Tate-Shafarevich groups. To prove this, we construct explicit $\mu _p$-covers of Jacobians of curves of the form $y^p = x(x-1)(x-a)$ which violate the Hasse principle. In the appendix, Tom Fisher explains how to interpret our proof in terms of a Cassels-Tate pairing.

In [CDD22], we investigated the structure of $\ast $-isomorphisms between von Neumann algebras $L(\Gamma )$ associated with graph product groups $\Gamma $ of flower-shaped graphs and property (T) wreath-like product vertex groups, as in [CIOS21]. In this follow-up, we continue the structural study of these algebras by establishing that these graph product groups $\Gamma $ are entirely recognizable from the category of all von Neumann algebras arising from an arbitrary nontrivial graph product group with infinite vertex groups. A sharper $C^*$-algebraic version of this statement is also obtained. In the process of proving these results, we also extend the main $W^*$-superrigidity result from [CIOS21] to direct products of property (T) wreath-like product groups.

We describe the structure of regular codimension $1$ foliations with numerically projectively flat tangent bundle on complex projective manifolds of dimension at least $4$. Along the way, we prove that either the normal bundle of a regular codimension $1$ foliation is pseudo-effective, or its conormal bundle is nef.

In this paper, we study the twisted Ruelle zeta function associated with the geodesic flow of a compact, hyperbolic, odd-dimensional manifold X. The twisted Ruelle zeta function is associated with an acyclic representation $\chi \colon \pi _{1}(X) \rightarrow \operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_{n}(\mathbb {C})$, which is close enough to an acyclic, unitary representation. In this case, the twisted Ruelle zeta function is regular at zero and equals the square of the refined analytic torsion, as it is introduced by Braverman and Kappeler in [6], multiplied by an exponential, which involves the eta invariant of the even part of the odd-signature operator, associated with $\chi $.

Oda’s problem, which deals with the fixed field of the universal monodromy representation of moduli spaces of curves and its independence with respect to the topological data, is a central question of anabelian arithmetic geometry. This paper emphasizes the stack nature of this problem by establishing the independence of monodromy fields with respect to finer special loci data of curves with symmetries, which we show provides a new proof of Oda’s prediction.

In Cartan’s PhD thesis, there is a formula defining a certain rank 8 vector distribution in dimension 15, whose algebra of authomorphism is the split real form of the simple exceptional complex Lie algebra $\mathfrak {f}_4$. Cartan’s formula is written in the standard Cartesian coordinates in $\mathbb {R}^{15}$. In the present paper, we explain how to find analogous formulae for the flat models of any bracket generating distribution $\mathcal D$ whose symbol algebra $\mathfrak {n}({\mathcal D})$ is constant and 2-step graded, $\mathfrak {n}({\mathcal D})=\mathfrak {n}_{-2}\oplus \mathfrak {n}_{-1}$.

The formula is given in terms of a solution to a certain system of linear algebraic equations determined by two representations $(\rho ,\mathfrak {n}_{-1})$ and $(\tau ,\mathfrak {n}_{-2})$ of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak {n}_{00}$ contained in the $0$th order Tanaka prolongation $\mathfrak {n}_0$ of $\mathfrak {n}({\mathcal D})$.

Numerous examples are provided, with particular emphasis put on the distributions with symmetries being real forms of simple exceptional Lie algebras $\mathfrak {f}_4$ and $\mathfrak {e}_6$.

What proportion of integers $n \leq N$ may be expressed as $x^2 + dy^2$ for some $d \leq \Delta $, with $x,y$ integers? Writing $\Delta = (\log N)^{\log 2} 2^{\alpha \sqrt {\log \log N}}$ for some $\alpha \in (-\infty , \infty )$, we show that the answer is $\Phi (\alpha ) + o(1)$, where $\Phi $ is the Gaussian distribution function $\Phi (\alpha ) = \frac {1}{\sqrt {2\pi }} \int ^{\alpha }_{-\infty } e^{-x^2/2} dx$.

A consequence of this is a phase transition: Almost none of the integers $n \leq N$ can be represented by $x^2 + dy^2$ with $d \leq (\log N)^{\log 2 - \varepsilon }$, but almost all of them can be represented by $x^2 + dy^2$ with $d \leq (\log N)^{\log 2 + \varepsilon}\kern-1.5pt$.

We show that an infinite group G definable in a $1$-h-minimal field admits a strictly K-differentiable structure with respect to which G is a (weak) Lie group, and we show that definable local subgroups sharing the same Lie algebra have the same germ at the identity. We conclude that infinite fields definable in K are definably isomorphic to finite extensions of K and that $1$-dimensional groups definable in K are finite-by-abelian-by-finite. Along the way, we develop the basic theory of definable weak K-manifolds and definable morphisms between them.

We study the quasi-ergodicity of compact strong Feller semigroups $U_t$, $t> 0$, on $L^2(M,\mu )$; we assume that M is a locally compact Polish space equipped with a locally finite Borel measue $\mu $. The operators $U_t$ are ultracontractive and positivity preserving, but not necessarily self-adjoint or normal. We are mainly interested in those cases where the measure $\mu $ is infinite and the semigroup is not intrinsically ultracontractive. We relate quasi-ergodicity on $L^p(M,\mu )$ and uniqueness of the quasi-stationary measure with the finiteness of the heat content of the semigroup (for large values of t) and with the progressive uniform ground state domination property. The latter property is equivalent to a variant of quasi-ergodicity which progressively propagates in space as $t \uparrow \infty $; the propagation rate is determined by the decay of . We discuss several applications and illustrate our results with examples. This includes a complete description of quasi-ergodicity for a large class of semigroups corresponding to non-local Schrödinger operators with confining potentials.

We prove a general formula that relates the parity of the Langlands parameter of a conjugate self-dual discrete series representation of $\operatorname { {GL}}_n$ to the parity of its Jacquet-Langlands image. It gives a generalization of a partial result by Mieda concerning the case of invariant $1/n$ and supercuspidal representations. It also gives a variation of the result on the self-dual case by Prasad and Ramakrishnan.

Let X be a smooth, projective and geometrically connected curve defined over a finite field ${\mathbb {F}}_q$ of characteristic p different from $2$ and $S\subseteq X$ a subset of closed points. Let $\overline {X}$ and $\overline {S}$ be their base changes to an algebraic closure of ${\mathbb {F}}_q$. We study the number of $\ell $-adic local systems $(\ell \neq p)$ in rank $2$ over $\overline {X}-\overline {S}$ with all possible prescribed tame local monodromies fixed by k-fold iterated action of Frobenius endomorphism for every $k\geq 1$. In all cases, we confirm conjectures of Deligne predicting that these numbers behave as if they were obtained from a Lefschetz fixed point formula. In fact, our counting results are expressed in terms of the numbers of some Higgs bundles.
