This paper is the first of a two part series devoted to describing relations between congruence and crystallographic braid groups. We recall and introduce some elements belonging to congruence braid groups and we establish some (iso)-morphisms between crystallographic braid groups and corresponding quotients of congruence braid groups.

In this article, we study rational matrix representations of VZ p-groups (p is any prime). Using our findings on VZ p-groups, we explicitly obtain all inequivalent irreducible rational matrix representations of all p-groups of order $\leq p^4$. Furthermore, we establish combinatorial formulae to determine the Wedderburn decompositions of rational group algebras for VZ p-groups and all p-groups of order $\leq p^4$, ensuring simplicity in the process.

Let $B(\Omega )$ be a Banach space of holomorphic functions on a bounded connected domain $\Omega $ in ${{\mathbb C}^n}$. In this paper, we establish a criterion for $B(\Omega )$ to be reflexive via evaluation functions on $B(\Omega )$, that is, $B(\Omega )$ is reflexive if and only if the evaluation functions span the dual space $(B(\Omega ))^{*} $.

Let $X=GC$ be a group, where C is a cyclic group and G is either a generalized quaternion group or a dihedral group such that $C\cap G=1$. In this paper, X is characterized and, moreover, a complete classification for $X$ is given, provided that G is a generalized quaternion group and C is core-free.

We study analogues of Kronecker coefficients for symmetric inverse semigroups, for dual symmetric inverse semigroups and for the inverse semigroups of bijections between subquotients of finite sets. In all cases, we reduce the problem of determination of such coefficients to some group-theoretic and combinatorial problems. For symmetric inverse semigroups, we provide an explicit formula in terms of the classical Kronecker and Littlewood–Richardson coefficients for symmetric groups.

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the least energy solutions to the following class of nonlocal Neumann problems:

where $\Omega \subset \mathbb {R}^{n}$ is a bounded domain of class $C^{1,1}$, $1<p<({n+s})/({n-s}),\,n>\max \{1, 2s \}, 0<s<1, d>0$ and $\mathcal {N}_{s}u$ is the nonlocal Neumann derivative. We show that for small $d,$ the least energy solutions $u_d$ of the above problem achieve an $L^{\infty }$-bound independent of $d.$ Using this together with suitable $L^{r}$-estimates on $u_d,$ we show that the least energy solution $u_d$ achieves a maximum on the boundary of $\Omega $ for d sufficiently small.

Let $L=-\Delta +V$ be a Schrödinger operator in ${\mathbb R}^n$ with $n\geq 3$, where $\Delta $ is the Laplace operator denoted by $\Delta =\sum ^{n}_{i=1}({\partial ^{2}}/{\partial x_{i}^{2}})$ and the nonnegative potential V belongs to the reverse Hölder class $(RH)_{q}$ with $q>n/2$. For $\alpha \in (0,1)$, we define the operator

where $\{e^{-tL^\alpha } \}_{t>0}$ is the fractional heat semigroup of the operator L, $\{v_j\}_{j\in \mathbb Z}$ is a bounded real sequence and $\{a_j\}_{j\in \mathbb Z}$ is an increasing real sequence.

We investigate the boundedness of the operator $T_N^{L^{\alpha }}$ and the related maximal operator $T^*_{L^{\alpha }}f(x):=\sup _N \vert T_N^{L^{\alpha }} f(x)\vert $ on the spaces $L^{p}(\mathbb {R}^{n})$ and $BMO_{L}(\mathbb {R}^{n})$, respectively. As extensions of $L^{p}(\mathbb {R}^{n})$, the boundedness of the operators $T_N^{L^{\alpha }}$ and $T^*_{L^{\alpha }}$ on the Morrey space $L^{\rho ,\theta }_{p,\kappa }(\mathbb {R}^{n})$ and the weak Morrey space $WL^{\rho ,\theta }_{1,\kappa }(\mathbb {R}^{n})$ has also been proved.

We study the problem of extending an order-preserving real-valued Lipschitz map defined on a subset of a partially ordered metric space without increasing its Lipschitz constant and preserving its monotonicity. We show that a certain type of relation between the metric and order of the space, which we call radiality, is necessary and sufficient for such an extension to exist. Radiality is automatically satisfied by the equality relation, so the classical McShane–Whitney extension theorem is a special case of our main characterization result. As applications, we obtain a similar generalization of McShane’s uniformly continuous extension theorem, along with some functional representation results for radial partial orders.

Using the special value at $u=1$ of Artin–Ihara L-functions, we associate to every $\mathbb {Z}$-cover of a finite connected graph a polynomial, which we call the Ihara polynomial. We show that the number of spanning trees for the finite intermediate graphs of such a cover can be expressed in terms of the Pierce–Lehmer sequence associated to a factor of the Ihara polynomial. This allows us to express the asymptotic growth of the number of spanning trees in terms of the Mahler measure of this polynomial. Specialising to the situation where the base graph is a bouquet or the dumbbell graph gives us back previous results in the literature for circulant and I-graphs (including the generalised Petersen graphs). We also express the p-adic valuation of the number of spanning trees of the finite intermediate graphs in terms of the p-adic Mahler measure of the Ihara polynomial. When applied to a particular $\mathbb {Z}$-cover, our result gives us back Lengyel’s calculation of the p-adic valuations of Fibonacci numbers.

For a prime p and a rational elliptic curve $E_{/\mathbb {Q}}$, set $K=\mathbb {Q}(E[p])$ to denote the torsion field generated by $E[p]:=\operatorname {ker}\{E\xrightarrow {p} E\}$. The class group $\operatorname {Cl}_K$ is a module over $\operatorname {Gal}(K/\mathbb {Q})$. Given a fixed odd prime number p, we study the average nonvanishing of certain Galois stable quotients of the mod-p class group $\operatorname {Cl}_K/p\operatorname {Cl}_K$. Here, E varies over all rational elliptic curves, ordered according to height. Our results are conditional, since we assume that the p-primary part of the Tate–Shafarevich group is finite. Furthermore, we assume predictions made by Delaunay for the statistical variation of the p-primary parts of Tate–Shafarevich groups. We also prove results in the case when the elliptic curve $E_{/\mathbb {Q}}$ is fixed and the prime p is allowed to vary.
