Let L be an elementary first order language. Let be an L-structure, and let φ be an L-formula with free variables u1, …, un, and υ. A Skolem function for φ on is an n-ary operation f on such that for all . If is an elementary substructure of , then an n-ary operation f on is said to preserve the elementary embedding of into if f(x)∈ for all x ∈ n, and (, f ∣n) ≺ (, f). Keisler asked the following question:

Problem 1. If and are L-structures such that ≺ , and if φ (u, υ) is an L-formula (with appropriate free variables), must there be a Skolem function for φ on which preserves the elementary embedding?

Payne [6] gave a counterexample in which the language L is uncountable. In [3], [5], the author announced the existence of an example in which L is countable but the structures and are uncountable. The construction of the example will be given in this paper. Keisler's problem is still open in case both the language and the structures are required to be countable. Positive results for some special cases are given in [4].

The following variant of Keisler's question was brought to the author's attention by Peter Winkler:

Problem 2. If L is a countable language, a countable L-structure, and φ(u, υ) an L-formula, must there be a Skolem function f for φ on such that for every countable elementary extension of , there is an extension of f which preserves the elementary embedding of into ?

The following question is open: Does there exist a hyperarithmetic class of computable structures with exactly one non-hyperarithmetic isomorphism-type? Given any oracle α ∈ 2ω, we can ask the same question relativized to α. A negative answer for every α implies Vaught's Conjecture for Lω1ω.

It is a classic result in modal logic, often referred to as Jónsson-Tarski duality, that the category of modal algebras is dually equivalent to the category of descriptive frames. The latter are Kripke frames equipped with a Stone topology such that the binary relation is continuous. This duality generalizes the celebrated Stone duality for boolean algebras. Our goal is to generalize descriptive frames so that the topology is an arbitrary compact Hausdorff topology. For this, instead of working with the boolean algebra of clopen subsets of a Stone space, we work with the ring of continuous real-valued functions on a compact Hausdorff space. The main novelty is to define a modal operator on such a ring utilizing a continuous relation on a compact Hausdorff space.

Our starting point is the well-known Gelfand duality between the category ${\sf KHaus}$ of compact Hausdorff spaces and the category $\boldsymbol {\mathit {uba}\ell }$ of uniformly complete bounded archimedean $\ell $ -algebras. We endow a bounded archimedean $\ell $ -algebra with a modal operator, which results in the category $\boldsymbol {\mathit {mba}\ell }$ of modal bounded archimedean $\ell $ -algebras. Our main result establishes a dual adjunction between $\boldsymbol {\mathit {mba}\ell }$ and the category ${\sf KHF}$ of what we call compact Hausdorff frames; that is, Kripke frames equipped with a compact Hausdorff topology such that the binary relation is continuous. This dual adjunction restricts to a dual equivalence between ${\sf KHF}$ and the reflective subcategory $\boldsymbol {\mathit {muba}\ell }$ of $\boldsymbol {\mathit {mba}\ell }$ consisting of uniformly complete objects of $\boldsymbol {\mathit {mba}\ell }$ . This generalizes both Gelfand duality and Jónsson-Tarski duality.

In this paper an affirmative solution is given for the following problem in many-valued logic posed by Rosser and Turquette in [6] p. 110:

For every triple ‹s, t, m› with 1 ≤ s < t < m, is it possible to define a system of m-valued logic which satisfies the following conditions? I. Every statement which always takes values ≦ s is provable. II. No statement which ever takes a value > t is provable. III. Of those statements which always take values ≤ t and sometimes take a value > s, some are provable and some are not.

We state now, temporarily deferring comment, a more demanding alternative to Condition III: III′. For every truth value k such that s < k ≦ t, there are statements P and Q such that each takes the value k at least once, but never takes a value > k, and P is provable and Q is not.

In § 2 a solution is given on the level of the statement calculus. The remainder of the present section is devoted to some negative results which serve to clarify the problem, and one positive result which shall cause us to replace Condition III by III′. We confine our attention to the statement calculus.

There are two concepts of standard/nonstandard models in simple type theory.

The first concept—we might call it the pragmatical one—interprets type theory as a first order logic with countably many sorts of variables: the variables for the urelements of type 0,…, the n-ary relational variables of type (τ1, …, τn) with arguments of type (τ1,…,τn), respectively. If A ≠ ∅ then 〈Aτ〉 is called a model of type logic, if A0 = A and . 〈Aτ〉 is called full if, for every τ = (τ1,…,τn), . The variables for the urelements range over the elements of A and the variables of type (τ1,…, τn) range over those subsets of which are elements of . The theory Th(〈Aτ〉) is the set of all closed formulas in the language which hold in 〈Aτ〉 under natural interpretation of the constants. If 〈Bτ〉 is a model of Th(〈Aτ〉), then there exists a sequence 〈fτ〉 of functions fτ: Aτ → Bτ such that 〈fτ〉 is an elementary embedding from 〈Aτ〉 into 〈Bτ〉. 〈Bτ〉 is called a nonstandard model of 〈Aτ〉, if f0 is not surjective. Otherwise 〈Bτ〉 is called a standard model of 〈Aτ〉.

This first concept of model theory in type logic seems to be preferable for applications in model theory, for example in nonstandard analysis, since all nice properties of first order model theory (completeness, compactness, and so on) are preserved.

We construct a model of ZFC satisfying the Dual Borel Conjecture in which there is a set of size ℵ1 that does not have measure zero.

Let λ be an ordinal less than or equal to an infinite cardinal κ. For S ⊂ κ, [S]λ denotes the collection of all order type λ subsets of S. A set X ⊂ [κ]λ will be called Ramsey iff there exists p ∈ [κ]κ such that either [p]λ ⊂ X or [p]λ ∩ X = ∅. The set p is called homogeneous for X.

The infinite Ramsey theorem implies that all subsets of [ω]n are Ramsey for n < ω. Using the axiom of choice, one can define a non-Ramsey subset of [ω]ω. In [GP], Galvin and Prikry showed that all Borel subsets of [ω]ω are Ramsey, where one topologizes [ω]ω as a subspace of Baire space. Silver [S] proved that analytic sets are Ramsey, and observed that this is best possible in ZFC.

When κ > ω, the assertion that all subsets of [κ]n are Ramsey is a large cardinal hypothesis equivalent to κ being weakly compact (and strongly inaccessible). Again, is not possible in ZFC to have all subsets of [κ]ω Ramsey. The analogy to the Galvin-Prikry theorem mentioned above was established by Kleinberg, extending work by Kleinberg and Shore in [KS]. The set [κ]ω is given a topology as a subspace of κω, which has the usual product topology, κ taken as discrete. It was shown that all open subsets of [κ]ω are Ramsey iff κ is a Ramsey cardinal (that is, κ → (κ)<ω).

In this note we examine the spaces [κ]λ for κ ≥ λ ≥ ω. We show that κ Ramsey implies all open subsets of [κ]λ are Ramsey for λ < κ, and that if κ is measurable, then all open subsets of [κ]κ are Ramsey. Let us remark here that we can with the same methods prove these results with “κ-Borel” in the place of “open”, where the κ-Borel sets are the smallest collection containing the opens and closed under complementation and intersections of length less than κ. Also, although here we consider just subsets of [κ]λ, it is no more difficult to show that partitions of [κ]λ into less than κ many κ-Borel sets have, under the appropriate hypothesis, size κ homogeneous sets.

Let $\mathcal {I}$ be an ideal on $\omega $ . For $f,\,g\in \omega ^{\omega }$ we write $f \leq _{\mathcal {I}} g$ if $f(n) \leq g(n)$ for all $n\in \omega \setminus A$ with some $A\in \mathcal {I}$ . Moreover, we denote $\mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {I}}=\{f\in \omega ^{\omega }: f^{-1}[\{n\}]\in \mathcal {I} \text { for every } n\in \omega \}$ (in particular, $\mathcal {D}_{\mathrm {Fin}}$ denotes the family of all finite-to-one functions).

We examine cardinal numbers $\mathfrak {b}(\geq _{\mathcal {I}}\cap (\mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {I}} \times \mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {I}}))$ and $\mathfrak {b}(\geq _{\mathcal {I}}\cap (\mathcal {D}_{\mathrm {Fin}}\times \mathcal {D}_{\mathrm {Fin}}))$ describing the smallest sizes of unbounded from below with respect to the order $\leq _{\mathcal {I}}$ sets in $\mathcal {D}_{\mathrm {Fin}}$ and $\mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {I}}$ , respectively. For a maximal ideal $\mathcal {I}$ , these cardinals were investigated by M. Canjar in connection with coinitial and cofinal subsets of the ultrapowers.

We show that $\mathfrak {b}(\geq _{\mathcal {I}}\cap (\mathcal {D}_{\mathrm {Fin}} \times \mathcal {D}_{\mathrm {Fin}})) =\mathfrak {b}$ for all ideals $\mathcal {I}$ with the Baire property and that $\aleph _1 \leq \mathfrak {b}(\geq _{\mathcal {I}}\cap (\mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {I}} \times \mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {I}})) \leq \mathfrak {b}$ for all coanalytic weak P-ideals (this class contains all $\bf {\Pi ^0_4}$ ideals). What is more, we give examples of Borel (even $\bf {\Sigma ^0_2}$ ) ideals $\mathcal {I}$ with $\mathfrak {b}(\geq _{\mathcal {I}}\cap (\mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {I}} \times \mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {I}}))=\mathfrak {b}$ as well as with $\mathfrak {b}(\geq _{\mathcal {I}}\cap (\mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {I}} \times \mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {I}})) =\aleph _1$ .

We also study cardinals $\mathfrak {b}(\geq _{\mathcal {I}}\cap (\mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {J}} \times \mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {K}}))$ describing the smallest sizes of sets in $\mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {K}}$ not bounded from below with respect to the preorder $\leq _{\mathcal {I}}$ by any member of $\mathcal {D}_{\mathcal {J}}\!$ . Our research is partially motivated by the study of ideal-QN-spaces: those cardinals describe the smallest size of a space which is not ideal-QN.

We give some general criteria for the stable embeddedness of a definable set. We use these criteria to establish the stable embeddedness in algebraically closed valued fields of two definable sets: The set of balls of a given radius r < 1 contained in the valuation ring and the set of balls of a given multiplicative radius r < 1. We also show that in an algebraically closed valued field a 0-definable set is stably embedded if and only if its algebraic closure is stably embedded.

This paper concerns the theory of morasses. In the early 1970s Jensen defined (k, α)-morasses for uncountable regular cardinals k and ordinals α < k. In the early 1980s Velleman defined (k, 1)-simplified morasses for all regular cardinals k. He showed that there is a (k, 1)-simplified morass if and only if there is (k, 1)-morass. More recently he defined (k, 2)-simplified morasses and Jensen was able to show that if there is a (k, 2)-morass then there is a (k, 2)-simplified morass.

In this paper we prove the converse of Jensen's result, i.e., that if there is a (k, 2)-simplified morass then there is a (k, 2)-morass.
