Assuming determinacy, the model L[T2] does not depend on the choice of T2.

In the Kripke semantics for propositional modal logic, a frame W = (W, ≺) represents a set of “possible worlds” and a relation of “accessibility” between possible worlds. With respect to a fixed frame W, a proposition is represented by a subset of W (regarded as the set of worlds in which the proposition is true), and an n-ary connective (i.e. a way of forming a new proposition from an ordered n-tuple of given propositions) is represented by a function fw: (P(W))n → P(W). Finally a state of affairs (i.e. a consistent specification whether or not each proposition obtains) is represented by an ultrafilter over W. {To avoid possible confusion, the reader should forget that some people prefer the term “states of affairs” for our “possible worlds”.}

In a broader sense, an n-ary connective is represented by an n-ary operatorf = {fw∣ W ∈ Fr}, where Fr is the class of all frames and each fw: (P(W))n → P(W). A connective is modal if it corresponds to a formula of propositional modal logic. A connective C is coherent if whether C(P1,…, Pn) is true in a possible world depends only upon which modal combinations of P1,…,Pn are true in that world. (A modal combination of P1,…,Pn is the result of applying a modal connective to P1,…, Pn.) A connective C is strongly coherent if whether C(P1, …, Pn) obtains in a state of affairs depends only upon which modal combinations of P1,…, Pn obtain in that state of affairs.

The purpose of this paper is to establish a connection between the complexity of κ-ultrafilters over a measurable cardinal κ, and the existence of ascending Rudin-Keisler chains of κ-ultrafilters and of inner models with several measurable cardinals.

If V is a model of ZFC + “There exists a measurable cardinal κ”, then V satisfies “There exists a normal κ-ultrafilter”, that is to say a “simple” κ-ultrafilter. The only known examples of “complex” κ-ultrafilters have been constructed by Kanamori [2], Ketonen [4] and Kunen (cf. [2]) with stronger hypotheses than measurability: compactness or supercompactness. Using the notions of skies and constellations defined by Kanamori [2] for the measurable case, and which witness the complexity of a κ-ultrafilter, we shall show the necessity of such assumptions, namely:

Theorem 1. If λ < κ is a strongly inaccessible cardinal, the existence of a κ-ultrafilter with more than λ constellations implies that there is an inner model with two measurable cardinals if λ = ω and λ + 1 measurable cardinals otherwise.

Theorem 2. Let θ < κ be an arbitrary ordinal. If there is a κ-ultrafilter such that the order-type of its skies is greater than ωθ, then there exists an inner model with θ + 1 measurable cardinals.

And as a corollary, we obtain:

Theorem 3. Let μ < κ be a regular cardinal. If there exists a κ-ultrafilter containing the closed-unbounded subsets of κ and {α < κ: cf(α) = μ}, then there is an inner model with two measurable cardinals if μ = ω, and μ + 1 measurable cardinals otherwise.

It has been known for more than thirty years that the degree of a non-standard model of true arithmetic is a subuniform upper bound for the arithmetic sets (suub). Here a notion of generic enumeration is presented with the property that the degree of such an enumeration is an suub but not the degree of a non-standard model of true arithmetic. This answers a question posed in the literature.

Let M be a saturated model of a superstable theory and let G = Aut(M). We study subgroups H of G which contain G(A), A the algebraic closure of a finite set, generalizing results of Lascar [L] as well as giving an alternative characterization of the simple superstable theories of [P]. We also make some observations about good, locally modular regular types p in the context of p-simple types.

We present a method for demonstrating the consistency of von Neuman-Gödel set theory Σ (or Zermelo set theory Σ′) relative to various other formal set theories. When a model for a logic L1 is constructed, there are two other logics involved: L2, the system which contains the model, and L3, the metalogic in which the argument that L2 contains a model for L1 is carried out. These three systems need not of course all be distinct. In [2] L1 is Σ strengthened by the axiom ∨ = L, L2 is Σ, and L3 is unformalized. In the present paper L1 will be either Σ or Σ′. The basic idea for proving the relative consistency of L1 with respect to some other system L2 is to construct in L2 a model for L1 similar to the model constructed in [2]. Since L2 may be some kind of type theory, the function corresponding to Gödel's function F must be modified in a suitable manner. In verifying the relativized versions of axioms of L1 in L2, we shall have to overcome certain special problems depending on the system L2 and not met with in [2]. Except for the remarks at the end of Section 2, we shall not consider the question of formalizing L3, i.e. we use intuitive logic as our metalogic.

In Section 1 we illustrate the method by demonstrating the consistency of Σ relative to the system ML″ obtained by adding E of [4] as an axiom to ML′ of [4]. We use the notation and results of [4] and [7].

Section 2 discusses the use of certain other systems for L2. It will be noted that the systems used for L2 are always slightly strengthened versions of well known systems ([5], [6], and the simple theory of types); it is of course to be hoped that modifications may be discovered which would make the method work in the original, unstrengthened systems, or that the relative consistency of the strengthened systems with respect to the original systems can be established.

Strengthening a theorem of Hjorth this paper gives a new characterization of which Polish groups admit compatible complete left invariant metrics. As a corollary it is proved that any Polish group without a complete left invariant metric has a continuous action on a Polish space whose associated orbit equivalence relation is not essentially countable.

We follow [8] in asking when a set of ordinals X ⊆ α is a countable union of sets in K, the core model. We show that, analogously to L, an X closed under the canonical Σ1 Skolem function for Kα can be so decomposed provided K is such that no ω-closed filters are put on its measure sequence, but not otherwise. This proviso holds if there is no inner model of a weak Erdős-type property.

We shall prove the following theorem: If κ is an infinite cardinal and Γ: P(κ) → cf κ a partition of the power-set of κ then we can find a homogeneous ⊿-system of size κ such that the kernel of the ⊿-system is in the same partition class as all the members of the ⊿-system.

No theory of a partially ordered set of finite width has the independence property, generalizing Poizat's corresponding result for linearly ordered sets. In fact, a question of Poizat concerning linearly ordered sets is answered by showing, moreover, that no theory of a partially ordered set of finite width has the multi-order property. It then follows that a distributive lattice is not finite-dimensional iff its theory has the independence property iff its theory has the multi-order property.

Quasiminimal pregeometry classes were introduced by [6] to isolate the model theoretical core of several interesting examples. He proves that a quasiminimal pregeometry class satisfying an additional axiom, called excellence, is categorical in all uncountable cardinalities. Recently, [2] showed that the excellence axiom follows from the rest of the axioms. In this paper we present a direct proof of the categoricity result without using excellence.

Jockusch showed that 2-generic degrees are downward dense below a 2-generic degree. That is, if a is 2-generic, and $0 < {\bf{b}} < {\bf{a}}$, then there is a 2-generic g with $0 < {\bf{g}} < {\bf{b}}.$ In the case of 1-generic degrees Kumabe, and independently Chong and Downey, constructed a minimal degree computable from a 1-generic degree. We explore the tightness of these results.

We solve a question of Barmpalias and Lewis-Pye by constructing a minimal degree computable from a weakly 2-generic one. While there have been full approximation constructions of ${\rm{\Delta }}_3^0$ minimal degrees before, our proof is rather novel since it is a computable full approximation construction where both the generic and the minimal degrees are ${\rm{\Delta }}_3^0 - {\rm{\Delta }}_2^0$.

We describe a first-order theory of generalized sets intended to allow a similar treatment of sets and proper classes. The theory is motivated by the iterative conception of set. It has a ternary membership symbol interpreted as membership relative to a set-building step. Set and proper class are defined notions. We prove that sets and proper classes with a defined membership form an inner model of Bernays-Morse class theory. We extend ordinal and cardinal notions to generalized sets and prove ordinal and cardinal results in the theory. We prove that the theory is consistent relative to ZFC + (∃x) [x is a strongly inaccessible cardinal].
