In Baire space we define a sequence of equivalence relations ‹Ev ∣ v < , each Ev being with classes in + v + 1 and such that (i) Ev does not have perfectly many classes, and (ii) is countable iff < ω1. This construction can be extended cofinally in . A new proof is given of a theorem of Hausdorff on partitions of R into ω1 many sets.

Modular machines were introduced in [1] and [2], where they were used to give simple proofs of various unsolvability results in group theory. Here we discuss the degrees of the halting, word, and confluence problems for modular machines, both for their own sake and in the hope that the results may be useful in group theory (see [4] for an application of a related result to group theory).

In the course of the analysis, I found it convenient to compare degrees of these problems for a Turing machine T and for a Turing machine T1 obtained from T by enlarging the alphabet but retaining the same quintuples (or quadruples). The results were surprising. The degree for a problem of T1 depends not just on the corresponding degree for T, but also on the degrees of the corresponding problems when T is restricted to a semi-infinite tape (both semi-infinite to the right and semi-infinite to the left). For the halting and confluence problems, the Turing degrees of the problems for these three machines can be any r.e. degrees. In particular the halting problem of T can be solvable, while that of T1 has any r.e. degree.

A machine M (in the general sense) consists of a countable set of configurations (together with a numbering, which we usually take for granted), a recursive subset of configurations called the terminal configurations, and a recursive function, written C ⇒ C′, on the set of configurations. If, for some n ≥ 0, we have C = C0 ⇒ C1 ⇒ … ⇒ Cn = C′, we write C → C′. We say M halts from C if C → C′ for some terminal C′.

Given a cardinal κ and a sequence ${\left( {{\alpha _i}} \right)_{i \in \kappa }}$ of ordinals, we determine the least ordinal β (when one exists) such that the topological partition relation

We give a completeness theorem for a logic with probability quantifiers which is equivalent to the logics described in a recent survey paper of Keisler [K]. This result improves on the completeness theorems in [K] in that it works for languages with function symbols and produces a model whose universe is an analytic subset of the real line, and whose relations and functions are Borel relative to this universe.

In this note we give a simple recursive axiomatization for the class of structures of type (ℶω ℵ0). This solves a problem of Vaught which is Problem 13 in the book [1] of Chang and Keisler. The same technique is used to get a recursive axiomatization for the class of κ-like structures where κ is strongly ω-inaccessible.

Notre but est d'étendre les résultats de Raphael Robinson [6] sur l'indécidabilité des corps de fractions rationnelles sur un corps ordonnable (dans le langage des corps). Comme lui, nous donnerons une méthode qui ne s'applique que lorsque le corps de base k est réel-clos, et une seconde méthode générate.

In this paper we study with proof-theoretic methods the function(al)s provably recursive relative to Ramsey's theorem for pairs and the cohesive principle (COH).

Our main result on COH is that the type 2 functional provably recursive from are primitive recursive. This also provides a uniform method to extract bounds from proofs that use these principles. As a consequence we obtain a new proof of the fact that is -conservative over PRA.

Recent work of the first author showed that is equivalent to a weak variant of the Bolzano-Weierstraß principle. This makes it possible to use our results to analyze not only combinatorial but also analytical proofs.

For Ramsey's theorem for pairs and two colors we obtain the upper bounded that the type 2 functional provable recursive relative to are in T1. This is the fragment of Gödel's system T containing only type 1 recursion—roughly speaking it consists of functions of Ackermann type. With this we also obtain a uniform method for the extraction of T1-bounds from proofs that use . Moreover, this yields a new proof of the fact that is -conservative over .

The results are obtained in two steps: in the first step a term including Skolem functions for the above principles is extracted from a given proof. This is done using Gödel's functional interpretation. After this the term is normalized, such that only specific instances of the Skolem functions are used. In the second step this term is interpreted using -comprehension. The comprehension is then eliminated in favor of induction using either elimination of monotone Skolem functions (for COH) or Howard's ordinal analysis of bar recursion (for ).

We characterize the (κ, λ, < μ)-distributive law in Boolean algebras in terms of cut and choose games , when μ ≤ κ ≤ λ and κ<κ = κ. This builds on previous work to yield game-theoretic characterizations of distributive laws for almost all triples of cardinals κ, λ, μ with μ ≤ λ, under GCH. In the case when μ ≤ κ ≤ λ and κ<κ = κ, we show that it is necessary to consider whether the κ-stationarity of in the ground model is preserved by . In this vein, we develop the theory of κ-club and κ-stationary subsets of . We also construct Boolean algebras in which Player I wins but the (κ, ∞, κ)-d.1. holds, and, assuming GCH, construct Boolean algebras in which many games are undetermined.

We introduce the $\Sigma _1$ -definable universal finite sequence and prove that it exhibits the universal extension property amongst the countable models of set theory under end-extension. That is, (i) the sequence is $\Sigma _1$ -definable and provably finite; (ii) the sequence is empty in transitive models; and (iii) if M is a countable model of set theory in which the sequence is s and t is any finite extension of s in this model, then there is an end-extension of M to a model in which the sequence is t. Our proof method grows out of a new infinitary-logic-free proof of the Barwise extension theorem, by which any countable model of set theory is end-extended to a model of $V=L$ or indeed any theory true in a suitable submodel of the original model. The main theorem settles the modal logic of end-extensional potentialism, showing that the potentialist validities of the models of set theory under end-extensions are exactly the assertions of S4. Finally, we introduce the end-extensional maximality principle, which asserts that every possibly necessary sentence is already true, and show that every countable model extends to a model satisfying it.

Why is forcing the only known method for constructing outer models of set theory?

If V is a standard transitive model of ZFC, then a standard transitive model W of ZFC is an outer model of V if V ⊆ W and V ∩ OR = W ∩ OR.

Is every outer model of a given model a generic extension? At one point Solovay conjectured that if 0# exists, then every real that does not construct 0# lies in L[G], for some G that is generic for some forcing ℙ ∈ L. Famously, this was refuted by Jensen's coding theorem. He produced a real that is generic for an L-definable class forcing property, but does not lie in any set forcing extension of L.

Beller, Jensen, and Welch in Coding the universe [BJW] revived Solovay's conjecture by asking the following question: Let a ⊆ ω be such that L[a] ⊨ “0# does not exist”. Is there ab∈ L[a] such that a ∉ L[b] and a is set generic over L[b].

In intuitionistic analysis, Brouwer's Continuity Principle implies, together with an Axiom of Countable Choice, that the positively Borel sets form a genuinely growing hierarchy: every level of the hierarchy contains sets that do not occur at any lower level.

If G is an omega-stable group with a normal definable subgroup H, then the Sylow-2-subgroups G/H are the images of the Sylow-2-subgroups of G.

Given a weakly o-minimal structure ${\cal M}$ and its o-minimal completion $\bar{{\cal M}}$, we first associate to $\bar{{\cal M}}$ a canonical language and then prove that Th$\left( {\cal M} \right)$ determines $Th\left( {\bar{{\cal M}}} \right)$. We then investigate the theory of the pair $\left( {\bar{{\cal M}},{\cal M}} \right)$ in the spirit of the theory of dense pairs of o-minimal structures, and prove, among other results, that it is near model complete, and every definable open subset of ${\bar{M}^n}$ is already definable in $\bar{{\cal M}}$.

We give an example of a weakly o-minimal structure interpreting $\bar{{\cal M}}$ and show that it is not elementarily equivalent to any reduct of an o-minimal trace.

R. K. Meyer once gave precise form to the question of whether relevant implication can be defined in any modal system, and his answer was ‘no’. In the present paper, we extend S4, first with propositional quantifiers, to the system S4π+; and then with definite propositional descriptions, to the system S4π+ip. We show that relevant implication can in some sense be defined in the modal system S4π+ip, although it cannot be defined in S4π+.

A set of gödel numbers is invariant if it is closed under automorphisms of (ω, ·), where ω is the set of all gödel numbers of partial recursive functions and · is application (i.e., n · m ≃ φn(m)). The invariant arithmetic sets are investigated, and the invariant recursively enumerable sets and partial recursive functions are partially characterized.

In this article I investigate the phenomenon of minimum and minimal models of second-order set theories, focusing on Kelley–Morse set theory KM, Gödel–Bernays set theory GB, and GB augmented with the principle of Elementary Transfinite Recursion. The main results are the following. (1) A countable model of ZFC has a minimum GBC-realization if and only if it admits a parametrically definable global well order. (2) Countable models of GBC admit minimal extensions with the same sets. (3) There is no minimum transitive model of KM. (4) There is a minimum β-model of GB+ETR. The main question left unanswered by this article is whether there is a minimum transitive model of GB+ETR.

In this paper we show how some of the finite injury priority arguments can be simplified by making explicit use of the primitive notions of axiomatic computational complexity theory. Phrases such as “perform n steps in the enumeration of Wi” certainly bear witness to the fact that many of these complexity notions have been used implicitly from the early days of recursive function theory. However, other complexity notions such as that of an “honest” function are not so apparent, neither explicitly nor implicitly. Accordingly, one of the main factors in our simplification of these diagonalization arguments is the replacement of the characteristic function χA of a set A by the function νA, which is the next-element function of the set A. Another important factor is the use of busy beaver sets (see [3]) to provide the basis for the required diagonalizations thereby permitting rather simple and explicit descriptions of the sets constructed. Although the differences between the priority method and our method of construction are subtle, they are nonetheless real and noteworthy.

In preparation for the results which follow we devote the remainder of this section to the requisite definitions and notions as well as some preliminary lemmas. A more comprehensive discussion of many of the notions in this section can be found in [3]. Since we will be dealing extensively with relative computations most of our notions here have been correspondingly relativized.
