There is an ergodic, measure preserving, countable Borel equivalence relation E on a standard Borel probability space (X, μ) such that E∣c is not essentially free on any conull C ⊂ X.

Several attempts have been done to distinguish “positive” information in an arbitrary first order theory, i.e., to find a well behaved class of closed sets among the definable sets. In many cases, a definable set is said to be closed if its conjugates are sufficiently distinct from each other. Each such definition yields a class of theories, namely those where all definable sets are constructible, i.e., boolean combinations of closed sets. Here are some examples, ordered by strength:

Weak normality describes a rather small class of theories which are well understood by now (see, for example, [P]). On the other hand, normalization is so weak that all theories, in a suitable context, are normalizable (see [HH]). Thus equational theories form an interesting intermediate class of theories. Little work has been done so far. The original work of Srour [S1, S2, S3] adopts a point of view that is closer to universal algebra than to stability theory. The fundamental definitions and model theoretic properties can be found in [PS], though some easy observations are missing there. Hrushovski's example of a stable non-equational theory, the first and only one so far, is described in the unfortunately unpublished manuscript [HS]. In fact, it is an expansion of the free pseudospace constructed independently by Baudisch and Pillay in [BP] as an example of a strictly 2-ample theory. Strong equationality, defined in [Hr], is also investigated in [HS].

As was first mentioned in [3, §5], if A is any – set, A is the union of two disjoint – sets B(0), B(1). In metarecursion theory this is proven as follows. Let ƒ be a one-to-one metarecursive function whose range is A, let R be an unbounded metarecursive set whose complement is also unbounded, and set B(0) = f(R), B(1) = f(). The corresponding fact of ordinary recursion theory, namely that any r.e. but not recursive set can be split into two other such sets, was proved by Friedberg [2, Theorem 1], using a clever priority argument. Sacks [7, Corollary 2] then showed that any r.e. but not recursive set is the union of two disjoint r.e. sets neither of which was recursive in the other, a much stronger result. In this paper we attempt to prove the analogous result for – sets A, but succeed only in the case A is simple; i.e., the complement of A contains no infinite subset. As a corollary we show the metadegrees are dense, a fact already announced by Sacks [8, Corollary 1], but only proven by him for nonzero metadegrees.

Suppose that α = γ + δ where γ ≥ δ > 0. Then there is a graph which has no independent set of order type and has no pentagram (a pentagram is a set of five points with all pairs joined by edges). In the notation of Erdős and Rado. who generalized Ramsey's Theorem to this setting.

We strengthen a theorem of Gitik and Shelah [6] by showing that if κ is either weakly inaccessible or the successor of a singular cardinal and S is a stationary subset of κ such that NSκ↾S is saturated then κ ∖ S is fat. Using this theorem we derive some results about the existence of fat stationary sets. We then strengthen some results due to Baumgartner and Taylor [2], showing in particular that if I is a λ+++-saturated normal ideal on Pκλ then the conditions of being λ+-preserving, weakly presaturated, and presaturated are equivalent for I.

In [12] we proved the following isotropy-reflection principle:

Theorem. Let F be a formally real field and let Fp denote its Pythagorean closure. The natural embedding of reduced special groups from Gred(F) into Gred(Fp) = G(FP) induced by the inclusion of fields, reflects isotropy.

Here Gred(F) denotes the reduced special group (with underlying group Ḟ/ΣḞ2) associated to the field F, henceforth assumed formally real; cf. [11], Chapter 1, §3, for details.

The result proved in [12] is, in fact, more general. For example, the Pythagorean closure Fp can be replaced in the statement above by the intersection of all real closures of F (inside a fixed algebraic closure). Similar statements hold, more generally, for all relative Pythagorean closures of F in the sense of Becker [3], Chapter II, §3.

Since the notion of isotropy of a quadratic form can be expressed by a first-order formula in the natural language LSG for special groups (with the coefficients as parameters), this result raises the question whether the embedding ιFFp: Gred(F) ↪ G (Fp) is elementary. Further, since the LSG-formula expressing isotropy is positive-existential, one may also ask whether ιFFp reflects all (closed) formulas ofthat kind with parameters in Gred(F).

In this paper we give a negative answer to the first of these questions, for a vast class of formally real (non-Pythagorean) fields F (Prop. 5.1). This follows from rather general preservation results concerning the “Boolean hull” and the “reduced quotient” operations on special groups.

Recently, the Dimension Problem for effective Hausdorff dimension was solved by J. Miller in [14], where the author constructs a Turing degree of non-integral Hausdorff dimension. In this article we settle the Dimension Problem for effective packing dimension by constructing a real of strictly positive effective packing dimension that does not compute a real of effective packing dimension one (on the other hand, it is known via [10. 3. 7] that every real of strictly positive effective Hausdorff dimension computes reals whose effective packing dimensions are arbitrarily close to, but not necessarily equal to, one).

In this work we study the decidability of a class of global modal logics arising from Kripke frames evaluated over certain residuated lattices, known in the literature as modal many-valued logics. We exhibit a large family of these modal logics which are undecidable, in contrast with classical modal logic and propositional logics defined over the same classes of algebras. This family includes the global modal logics arising from Kripke frames evaluated over the standard Łukasiewicz and Product algebras. We later refine the previous result, and prove that global modal Łukasiewicz and Product logics are not even recursively axiomatizable. We conclude by closing negatively the open question of whether each global modal logic coincides with its local modal logic closed under the unrestricted necessitation rule.

Given a family ${\cal C}$ of infinite subsets of ${\Bbb N}$, we study when there is a Borel function $S:2^{\Bbb N} \to 2^{\Bbb N} $ such that for every infinite $x \in 2^{\Bbb N} $, $S\left( x \right) \in {\Cal C}$ and $S\left( x \right) \subseteq x$. We show that the family of homogeneous sets (with respect to a partition of a front) as given by the Nash-Williams’ theorem admits such a Borel selector. However, we also show that the analogous result for Galvin’s lemma is not true by proving that there is an $F_\sigma $ tall ideal on ${\Bbb N}$ without a Borel selector. The proof is not constructive since it is based on complexity considerations. We construct a ${\bf{\Pi }}_2^1 $ tall ideal on ${\Bbb N}$ without a tall closed subset.

In this paper it will be shown that the fundamental modal functions (“… is necessary,” “… is possible,” etc.) may be represented in the ordinary two-valued logic of propositions, relatively to a subset S of the set K of all propositions of the logic. The only restriction on S is that no member of S can occur in any other member of S. The representation concerns the set SK consisting of all members of K in which occur members of S. Every member of SK may be regarded as a truth-function of the members of S. If S consists of only one member, P, and if f(P) and g(P) are any members of SK, then we define ∣f(P)∣ as (f(P)·f(~P)). The proposition “f(P) is S-necessary” may then be expressed by ∣f(P)· Furthermore we may express “f(P) is S-impossible” by ∣~f(P)∣, abbreviated to f(P)*; we may express “f(P) is S-possible” by abbreviated to f(P); and we may express “f(P) S-strictly implies g(P)” by (f(P)·~g(P))*, abbreviated to f(P)⊰g(P). Thus is obtained a novel analysis of modality, contrasting, on the one hand, with Carnap's syntactic theory of modality, and, on the other hand, with Lewis's view of modal concepts as underivable from other logical concepts. We would maintain that modal concepts are not absolute, but always relative to some S, generally unspecified.

In the formal exposition which follows, we shall assume tacitly but not explicitly the important distinction between the symbols we are discussing and symbols denoting or designating the former.

We show that every analytic filter is generated by a prefilter, every filter is generated by a prefilter, and if is a prefilter then the filter generated by it is also . The last result is unique for the Borel classes, as there is a -complete prefilter P such that the filter generated by it is -complete. Also, no complete coanalytic filter is generated by an analytic prefilter. The proofs use König's infinity lemma, a normal form theorem for monotone analytic sets, and Wadge reductions.

A very fruitful line of research in recent years has been the application of techniques in large cardinals and forcing to the production of models in which certain consequences of the axiom of determinateness (AD) are true or in which certain “AD-like” consequences are true. Numerous results have been published on this subject, among them the papers of Bull and Kleinberg [4], Bull [3], Woodin [15], Mitchell [11], and [1], [2].

Another such model will be constructed in this paper. Specifically, the following theorem is proven.

Theorem 1. Con(ZFC + There are cardinals κ < δ < λ so that κ is a supercompact limit of supercompact cardinals, λ is a measurable cardinal, and δ is λ supercompact) ⇒ Con(ZF + ℵ1 and ℵ2 are Ramsey cardinals + The ℵn for 3 ≤ n ≤ ω are singular cardinals of cofinality ω each of which carries a Rowbottom filter + ℵω + 1 is a Ramsey cardinal + ℵω + 2 is a measurable cardinal).

It is well known that under AD + DC, ℵ2 and ℵ2 are measurable cardinals, the ℵn for 3 ≤ n < ω are singular Jonsson cardinals of cofinality ℵ2, ℵω is a Rowbottom cardinal, and ℵω + 1 and ℵω + 2 are measurable cardinals.

The proof of the above theorem will use the existence of normal ultrafilters which satisfy a certain property (*) (to be defined later) and an automorphism argument which draws upon the techniques developed in [9], [2], and [4] but which shows in addition that certain supercompact Prikry partial orderings are in a strong sense “homogeneous”. Before beginning the proof of the theorem, however, we briefly mention some preliminaries.

This article is a rewriting of my Ph.D. Thesis, supervised by Professor G. Sabbagh, and incorporates a suggestion from Professor B. Poizat. My main result can be crudely summarized (but see below for detailed statements) by the equality: first-order theory of F[Xi]i∈I = weak second-order theory of F.

§I.1. Conventions. The letter F will always denote a commutative field, and I a nonempty set. A field or a ring (A; +, ·) will often be written A for short. We shall use symbols which are definable in all our models, and in the structure of natural numbers (N; +, ·):

— the constant 0, defined by the formula Z(x): ∀y (x + y = y);

— the constant 1, defined by the formula U(x): ∀y (x · y = y);

— the operation ∹ x − y = z ↔ x = y + z;

— the relation of division: x ∣ y ↔ ∃ z(x · z = y).

A domain is a commutative ring with unity and without any zero divisor.

By “… → …” we mean “… is definable in …, uniformly in any model M of L”.

All our constructions will be uniform, unless otherwise mentioned.

§I.2. Weak second-order models and languages. First of all, we have to define the models Pf(M), Sf(M), Sf′(M) and HF(M) associated to a model M = {A; ℐ) of a first-order language L [CK, pp. 18–20]. Let L1 be the extension of L obtained by adjunction of a second list of variables (denoted by capital letters), and of a membership symbol ∈. Pf(M) is the model (A, Pf(A); ℐ, ∈) of L1, (where Pf(A) is the set of finite subsets of A. Let L2 be the extension of L obtained by adjunction of a second list of variables, a membership symbol ∈, and a concatenation symbol ◠.

We define a generalized version of CM-triviality, and show that in the presence of enough regular types, or solubility, a stable CM-trivial group is nilpotent-by-finite. A torsion-free small CM-trivial stable group is abelian and connected. The first result makes use of a generalized version of the analysis of bad groups.

We clarify and correct some statements and results in the literature concerning unimodularity in the sense of Hrushovski [7], and measurability in the sense of Macpherson and Steinhorn [8], pointing out in particular that the two notions coincide for strongly minimal structures and that another property from [7] is strictly weaker, as well as “completing” Elwes' proof [5] that measurability implies 1-basedness for stable theories.

The transitive closure of a binary relation R can be thought of as the best possible approximation of R “from above” by a transitive relation. We consider the question of approximating a relation from below by transitive relations. Our main result is that every thick relation (a relation whose complement contains no infinite chain) on a countable set has a transitive thick subrelation. This allows for a solution to a problem arising from previous work by the author and Alan Taylor. We also exhibit a thick relation on an uncountable set with no transitive thick subrelation.

We prove that there exists a noncappable enumeration degree strictly below 0e′.
