The formation time of the surrounding sheath of Langmuir probes in an ionospheric plasma has been studied to better understand the constraints this puts on the sampling frequency of a probe. A fully kinetic three-dimensional particle-in-cell model is used to simulate the temporal effects in the electron saturation region as the sheath forms. The stability of the probe current and the stability of the ion and electron density in the vicinity of the probe have been used to evaluate when the sheath was formed. Simulated results were compared with theoretical models and are in good agreement with the theoretical results. This shows that theoretical models can be used as guidance to estimate the formation time and to determine the sampling rate for a swept bias Langmuir system. Our results also show that the formation time is less affected by the plasma temperature and bias voltage as we move into the thick sheath regime, and will instead be determined by the plasma density. The presented results also show that applying a step function to the probe could be used to characterise ions species composition, or to estimate the ion density.

We upgrade the three-dimensional linear stability CASTOR3D code by taking into account gyro-viscosity in the momentum equation, as well as pressure and Hall terms in Ohm's law. Making use of the drift approximation, the resulting simplified version of Ohm's law is implemented. The ion and electron diamagnetic drift effects described by these newly implemented terms are investigated for ideal and resistive, low- and medium-$n$ internal modes depending on the ratio of ion and electron pressures, and plasma resistivity. Stability studies are performed for two- and three-dimensional test equilibria. The results confirm previous findings, and provide new insights especially in the case of the three-dimensional equilibrium (e.g. reduction of the coupling of toroidal harmonics).

Terahertz (THz) field excitation by a rotating relativistic electron beam in a magnetized plasma column is described using numerical analysis and particle-in-cell simulation. A rotating electron beam propagating through a cylindrical plasma column excites plasma wakefields. The plasma wakefields couple with the electron beam to excite transverse currents at THz frequency. As a result, the energy of the wakefield directly converts into the form of electromagnetic radiation in the THz range. The magnetic field supports the transverse modes via electron cyclotron resonance. The strength of the THz field is enhanced due to scattering of the spiralling electron beam on the plasma density perturbation. The THz field amplitude is controllable by the electron beam velocity and beam density. On increasing the beam current, the THz field is enhanced significantly. The analytical results are compared with particle-in-cell simulations and are found to be in reasonable agreement.

We review the modulation stability of parallel-propagating/field-aligned whistler-mode chorus (WMC) waves propagating in a warm plasma from a formal perspective with a focus on wave–particle interactions via ponderomotive forces. The modulation instability criteria are characterised by the group velocity dispersion, $d c_g/dk$, for whistler-mode waves and a condition on the ratio between the group velocity $c_g$ and the electron sound speed $c_{s,e}$. We also demonstrate that in order to investigate the spatiotemporal evolution of the envelope and the formation of packets (according to this mechanism), one necessarily needs to account for the motion of ions within the system, leading to an ionic influence on the modulation instability threshold determined by the ion fraction of the plasma. Finally, we demonstrate that chirping may be captured when higher-order effects are included within the spatiotemporal evolution of the amplitude. This yields not only an explicit expression for the sweep rate but also identifies a possible origin for the power band gap that occurs at half the electron gyrofrequency. Numerical validation demonstrates that the interaction between wave packets is a source for the emergence of tones observed within mission data, and such interactions may be a major source of the electron energisation which WMC are responsible for.

A systematic simulation study of the $n/m=1/1$ instability driven by energetic counter-passing particles in tokamak plasmas has been carried out using the kinetic-MHD (Magnetohydrodynamics) hybrid code M3D-K. The safety factor's radial profile is monotonically increasing with central value $q_0$ less than unity. The linear simulation results show that the instability is either a $m/n=1/1$ energetic particle mode or a $m/n=1/1$ global Alfvén eigenmode depending on the value of the central safety factor. The mode frequencies are close to the tip of Alfvén continuum spectrum at the magnetic axis. The excited modes are radially localized near the magnetic axis well within the safety factor $q=1$ surface. The main wave particle resonance is found to be $\omega _\phi +2\omega _\theta =\omega$, where ω is the mode frequency. The nonlinear simulation results show that there is a long period of quasi-steady-state saturation phase with frequency chirping up after initial saturation. Correspondingly, the energetic particle distribution with low energies is flattened in the core of the plasma. After this quasi-steady phase, the mode amplitude grows again and frequency jumps down to a low value corresponding to a new mode similar to the energetic co-passing particle-driven low-frequency fishbone while the energetic particle distribution is flattened for higher energies in the core of plasma.

In moderately coupled plasmas, a significant fraction of the internal energy resides in electric fields. As these plasmas are heated or compressed, the shifting partition of energy between particles and fields leads to surprising effects, particularly when ions and electrons have different temperatures. In this work, quasi-equations of state (quasi-EOS) are derived for two-temperature moderately coupled plasma in a thermodynamic framework and expressed in a simple form. These quasi-EOS readily yield expressions for correlation heating, in which heating of the electrons causes a rapid increase in ion temperature even in the absence of collisional energy exchange between species. It is also shown that, remarkably, compression of moderately coupled plasma drives a temperature difference between electrons and ions, even when the species start at equal temperatures. These additional channels for ion heating may be relevant in designing ignition schemes for inertial confinement fusion.

The impurity transport at Wendelstein 7-X during its most recent campaign is characterized and documented for a variety of different plasma scenarios. An overview of its dependence on several quantities is given, which allows identification of transport regimes and the major driver for impurity transport. Beyond this, a comparison with the impurity behavior in other fusion devices is now possible. In contrast to other stellarators, no density dependence of the impurity transport has been found. Additionally, the influence of the turbulence contribution to the overall transport is reflected in the dependence on various parameters, e.g. turbulent diffusion and density fluctuation amplitudes. With this database approach, one can now also apply scaling laws to make extrapolations about the impurity confinement in future plasma scenarios.

A high-intensity laser pulse propagating through a gas target disturbs the uniform plasma distribution. Plasma density structures, created by high-order Bessel–Gauss beams for guiding the accelerating Gaussian beam and laser wakefield acceleration of electrons, are analysed using Wake-T and Fourier–Bessel particle-in-cell (FBPIC) simulation tools. The use of Bessel–Gauss doughnut beams increases the acceleration distance and energy of accelerated electrons up to 2.3 times at a 2 mm distance relative to the Gaussian beam of the same intensity.

Efforts are underway to magnetically confine electron–positron pair plasmas to study their unique behaviour, which is characterized by significant changes in plasma time and length scales, supported waves and unstable modes. However, use of conventional plasma diagnostics presents challenges with these low-density and annihilating matter–antimatter plasmas. To address this problem, we propose to develop techniques based on the distinct emission provided by annihilation. This emission exhibits two spatial correlations: the distance attenuation of isotropic sources and the back-to-back propagation of momentum-preserving 2$\gamma$ annihilation. We present the results of our analysis of the $\gamma$ emission rate and the spatial profile of the annihilation in a magnetized pair plasma from direct pair collisions, from the formation and decay of positronium as well as from transport processes. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of annihilation-based techniques, we tested them on annular $\gamma$ emission profiles produced by a $\beta ^+$ radioisotope on a rotating turntable. Direct and positronium-mediated annihilation result in overlapping volumetric $\gamma$ sources, and the 2$\gamma$ emission from these volumetric sources can be tomographically reconstructed from coincident counts in multiple detectors. Transport processes result in localized annihilation where field lines intersect walls, limiters or internal magnets. These localized sources can be identified by the fractional $\gamma$ counts on spatially distributed detectors.

A two-fluid model is developed to study the stability of weakly magnetized rotating plasma columns. Previous works have shown that rotating plasma columns are prone to centrifugal flute modes. Most of these models are based on the low-frequency assumption which is valid when the instability frequency and the plasma azimuthal frequency are small compared with the ion cyclotron frequency. This assumption is challenged in many laboratory plasma devices, including weakly magnetized plasma columns. A radially global dispersion relation relaxing the low-frequency approximation and applicable in these devices is derived. The validity domain of the low-frequency approximation is discussed. In addition, the impact of the radial boundary on the linear stability is investigated and comparison with results obtained in the radially local approximation are performed.

Three-dimensional equilibrium codes are vital for stellarator design and operation, and high-accuracy equilibria are also necessary for stability studies. This paper details comparisons of two three-dimensional equilibrium codes: VMEC, which uses a steepest-descent algorithm to reach a minimum-energy plasma state, and DESC, which minimizes the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) force error in real space directly. Accuracy as measured by satisfaction of MHD force balance is presented for each code, along with the computation time. It is shown that DESC is able to achieve more accurate solutions, especially near axis. The importance of higher-accuracy equilibria is shown in DESC's better agreement of stability metrics with asymptotic formulae. DESC's global Fourier–Zernike basis also yields solutions with analytic derivatives explicitly everywhere in the plasma volume, provides improved accuracy in the radial direction versus conventional finite differences and allows for exponential convergence. Further, DESC can compute a solution with the same accuracy as VMEC in order-of-magnitude less time.

The ASACUSA (atomic spectroscopy and collisions using slow antiprotons) Cusp experiment requires the production of dense positron plasmas with a high repetition rate to produce a beam of antihydrogen. In this work, details of the positron production apparatus used for the first observation of the antihydrogen beam, and subsequent measurements, are described in detail. This apparatus replaced the previous compact trap design resulting in an improvement in the positron accumulation rate by a factor of $52\pm 3$.

Many applications in magnetic confinement fusion require the efficient calculation of surface integrals with singular integrands. The singularity subtraction approaches typically used to handle such singularities are complicated to implement and low-order accurate. In contrast, we demonstrate that the Kapur–Rokhlin quadrature scheme is well-suited for the logarithmically singular integrals encountered for a toroidally axisymmetric confinement system, is easy to implement and is high-order accurate. As an illustration, we show how to apply this quadrature scheme for the efficient and accurate calculation of the normal component of the magnetic field due to the plasma current on the plasma boundary, via the virtual-casing principle.

Charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) measures the radial electric field in the pedestal by measuring the impurity density, temperature and flow. Combined outboard and inboard CXRS measurements allow poloidal variations that arise due to the poloidal variation of the magnetic field to be determined. At present, impurity neoclassical pedestal models avoid the complications of treating finite poloidal gyroradius effects by assuming the impurity charge number is large compared with the main ion charge number. These models are extended slightly by retaining the impurity radial pressure gradient to demonstrate that no substantial effect occurs due to impurity diamagnetic effects. More importantly, the neoclassical model is significantly extended to obtain a more comprehensive treatment of the main ions in the plateau and banana regimes. A parallel impurity momentum equation is derived that is consistent with previous results in the banana regime and reduces to the proper large aspect ratio form required in the plateau regime. The implications for interpreting the CXRS measurements are discussed by writing all results in terms of the gradient drive and poloidal flow.

Local gyrokinetic simulations, performed with the GENE code, are used to investigate the interaction between (negative) triangularity $\delta$ and magnetic shear $s$, in both ion temperature gradient and trapped electron mode dominated plasmas. Magnetic shear turns out to influence in a non-trivial way the effect of negative triangularity. Also, $\delta <0$ is found to lead to a reduction of fluxes when $s>1$ but not anymore when shear is reduced. In certain parameter regimes, this effect can be inverted, up to obtaining higher fluxes when $\delta <0$ with respect to its $\delta >0$ counterpart.

We present Vlasov–Poisson three-dimensional linear stability analysis of an initially planar electron hole structure, solving for the distribution function by integration along unperturbed orbits. The non-sinusoidal potential perturbation shape (parallel to $B$) is expanded in eigenfunctions of the adiabatic Poisson operator, generalizing the prior assumption of a rigid shift of the equilibrium. We show that the shiftmode is then modified by a second discrete mode plus an integral over a continuum of wave-like modes. A rigorous treatment shows that the continuum can be approximated effectively by a single mode that satisfies the external wave dispersion relation, thus making the perturbation a weighted sum of three modes. We find numerically the solution for the complex instability frequency, and the corresponding three mode amplitudes determining the perturbation eigenmode. This multimode analysis refines the accuracy of the prior single-mode results, giving slightly higher growth rates at most parameters, as expected from the extra mode shape freedom. Oscillating modes near stability boundaries have larger mode distortions which help explain particle-in-cell simulations that observe instability up to ${\sim }20$ % beyond the prior shiftmode thresholds, and narrowing of the perturbation. At high magnetic field, the multimode analysis predicts a reduction of the already small growth rate.

In this study, we explore the influence of the helicity of the magnetic axis – defined as the self-linking number of the curve – on the quality of quasi-isodynamic stellarator-symmetric configurations constructed using the near-axis expansion method (Plunk et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 85, 2019, 905850602; Camacho Mata et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 88, 2022, 905880503). A class of magnetic axes previously unexplored within this formalism is identified when analysing the axis shape of the QIPC configuration (Subbotin et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 46, 2006, p. 921): the case of half-helicity (per field period). We show that these shapes are compatible with the near-axis formalism and how they can be used to construct near-axis stellarators with up to five field periods, $\def\iotaslash{{\require{HTML} \style{display: inline-block; transform: rotate(-13deg)}{\iota}}\kern-7pt{\require{HTML} \style{display: inline-block; transform: rotate(-25deg)}{-}}}{\epsilon _{\mathrm {eff}}} \approx 1.3\,\%$, and similar rotational transform to existing conventionally optimized designs, without the need of a plasma boundary optimization.

Global electromagnetic turbulence is simulated in stellarator geometry using the gyrokinetic particle-in-cell code EUTERPE. The evolution of the turbulent electromagnetic field and the plasma profiles is considered at different values of the plasma beta and for different magnetic configurations. It is found that turbulence is linearly driven at relatively high toroidal mode numbers. In the nonlinear regime, lower toroidal mode numbers, including zonal flows, are excited resulting in a quench of the linear instability drive. The turbulent heat flux is outward and leads to the nonlinear relaxation of the plasma temperature profile. The particle flux is inward for the parameters considered. The effect of the parallel perturbation of the magnetic field on the stellarator turbulence is addressed.

We summarize recent attempts to unravel the role of plasma kinetic effects in radiation mediated shocks. Such shocks form in all strong stellar explosions and are responsible for the early electromagnetic emission released from these events. A key issue that has been overlooked in all previous works is the nature of the coupling between the charged leptons, that mediate the radiation force, and the ions, which are the dominant carriers of the shock energy. Our preliminary investigation indicates that in the case of relativistic shocks, as well as Newtonian shocks in multi-ion plasma, this coupling is driven by either, transverse magnetic fields of a sufficiently magnetized upstream medium, or plasma microturbulence if strong enough magnetic fields are absent. We discuss the implications for the shock breakout signal, as well as abundance evolution and kilonova emission in binary neutron star mergers.

Turbulence is typically not in equilibrium, i.e. mean quantities such as the mean energy and helicity are typically time-dependent. The effect of non-stationarity on the turbulent hydromagnetic dynamo process is studied here with the use of the two-scale direct-interaction approximation, which allows one to explicitly relate the mean turbulent Reynolds and Maxwell stresses and the mean electromotive force to the spectral characteristics of turbulence, such as the mean energy, as well as kinetic and cross-helicity. It is demonstrated that the non-equilibrium effects can enhance the dynamo process when the magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is both helical and cross-helical. This effect is based on the turbulent infinitesimal-impulse cross-response functions, which do not affect turbulent flows in equilibrium. The evolution and sources of the cross-helicity in magnetohydrodynamic turbulence are also discussed.
