The bremsstrahlung process is studied in complex plasmas including the influence of ions and variable dust charge. The electron-dust particle bremsstrahlung radiation cross-section (e-D-BRCS) is obtained with the analytic expression for the effective dust charge in terms of the Debye length and the temperature ratio. The e-D-BRCS is found to be reduced with either the decrease of ion temperature or increase of electron temperature. The ion density effect is found to be more important in the small electron temperature domain. Interestingly, the influence of ion temperature and density is found to be independent of the bremsstrahlung emission energy. The effective dust charge is also found to decrease with an increase of the ratio of the electron temperature to the ion temperature. In addition, it is found that the effective dust charge increases with an increase of the ratio of the electron density to the ion density. Moreover, the e-D-BRCS is found to be increased with the decrease of ion density.

On the basis of the energy invariants for the Weibel instability in a collisionless non-relativistic plasma, an analytical relation is obtained between the instantaneous values of the space-averaged energy density of the magnetic field, its dominant wavenumber and the average plasma anisotropy parameter. The relation is valid for arbitrary particle velocity distribution functions, including ones that vary with time at the nonlinear stage of instability. It is obtained under the assumption that the plasma is homogeneous along a certain axis, determined, for example, by an external magnetic field, and taking into account only the modes with wavevectors orthogonal to this axis. We give an estimate of the maximum magnetic field energy achievable during the Weibel instability and show that its ratio to the initial longitudinal energy of particles, even for a large initial plasma anisotropy parameter, cannot exceed the value approximately equal to 0.2. The obtained analytical relation is verified using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.

An equation describing eigenmodes in the ion cyclotron frequency range in ‘warm’ bounded plasmas, i.e. eigenmodes which are absent in the two-fluid model but exist in kinetic theory due to finite Larmor radius of the ions, is derived for the first time. It is valid for electrostatic modes but the developed approach is generic. Calculations are carried out for two cases: first, for a homogeneous magnetic field; second, taking into account the effects of toroidicity in tokamaks. It is found that, in general, equations for eigenmodes in warm plasmas do not reduce to second-order differential equations (in contrast to those which are usually used to describe the radial structure of eigenmodes in fusion devices). The study of modes in warm plasmas is of interest, in particular, in connection with the recent observations of superthermal ion cyclotron emission in the NSTX-U spherical torus and DIII-D tokamak, which can be hardly explained by conventional theories employing fast magnetoacoustic modes.

The growing amount of data produced by simulations and observations of space physics processes encourages the use of methods rooted in machine learning for data analysis and physical discovery. We apply a clustering method based on self-organizing maps to fully kinetic simulations of plasmoid instability, with the aim of assessing their suitability as a reliable analysis tool for both simulated and observed data. We obtain clusters that map well, a posteriori, to our knowledge of the process; the clusters clearly identify the inflow region, the inner plasmoid region, the separatrices and regions associated with plasmoid merging. Self-organizing map-specific analysis tools, such as feature maps and the unified distance matrix, provide us with valuable insights into both the physics at work and specific spatial regions of interest. The method appears as a promising option for the analysis of data, both from simulations and from observations, and could also potentially be used to trigger the switch to different simulation models or resolution in coupled codes for space simulations.

The Hosking integral, which characterizes magnetic helicity fluctuations in subvolumes, is known to govern the decay of magnetically dominated turbulence. Here, we show that, when the evolution of the magnetic field is controlled by the motion of electrons only, as in neutron star crusts, the decay of the magnetic field is still controlled by the Hosking integral, but now it has effectively different dimensions than in ordinary magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. This causes the correlation length to increase with time $t$ like $t^{4/13}$ instead of $t^{4/9}$ in MHD. The magnetic energy density decreases like $t^{-10/13}$, which is slower than in MHD, where it decays like $t^{-10/9}$. These new analytic results agree with earlier numerical simulations for the non-helical Hall cascade.

In tokamaks and neoclassically optimised stellarators, like Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) and the Helically Symmetric Experiment, turbulent transport is expected to be the dominant transport mechanism. Among the electrostatic instabilities that drive turbulence, the trapped-electron mode (TEM) has been shown both analytically and in simulations to be absent over large ranges of parameter space in quasi-isodynamic stellarator configurations with the maximum-$J$ property. It has been proposed that the reduction of the linear TEM growth rate in such configurations may lead to the passing-electron-driven universal instability, which is often subdominant to the TEM, becoming the fastest-growing instability over some range of parameter space. Here, we show through gyrokinetic simulations using the Gene code, that the universal instability is dominant in a variety of stellarator geometries over a range of parameter space typically occupied by the TEM, but most consequentially in devices which possess beneficial TEM stability properties like W7-X, which locally satisfies the maximum-$J$ property for deeply trapped particles in the regions of worst curvature. We find that the universal instability exists at long perpendicular wavelengths and, as a result, dominates the potential fluctuation amplitude in nonlinear simulations. In W7-X, universal modes are found to differ in parallel mode structure from trapped-particle modes, which may impact turbulence localisation in experiments.

Laser-plasma instabilities (LPI) play a detrimental role in energy coupling to the target in inertial confinement fusion (ICF). The recent development of applied strong magnetic fields for use in ICF and laboratory astrophysics experiments has opened opportunities to investigate the role of external magnetic fields on LPIs. Recent numerical studies have shown that stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) can be mitigated by external magnetic fields in the kinetic regime of the instability and warrant systematic experimental studies to validate modelling. To this end, we design experiments at the OMEGA-EP laser facility to investigate the effect of an external perpendicular $B$-field of 5–30 T on the backscattered light spectrum from a gas-jet target. We present measurements from a proof-of-principle experiment, where the backward-SRS (BSRS) is in the kinetic regime, for which the magnetization is expected to produce the greatest effects on instability growth. New simulations motivated by this experiment are used to inform the proposal of an upgraded experimental design. Our simulation predictions show that the new design is suited to experimentally demonstrating BSRS mitigation by an external magnetic field, despite the magnetization effects on the hydrodynamics, as well as the inherent temporal and spatial variations in plasma conditions.

When a particle crosses a region of space where the curvature radius of the magnetic field line shrinks below its gyroradius $r_{g}$, it experiences a non-adiabatic (magnetic moment violating) change in pitch angle. The present paper carries that observation into magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence to examine the influence of intermittent, sharp bends of the magnetic field lines on particle transport. On the basis of dedicated measurements in a simulation of incompressible turbulence, it is argued that regions of sufficiently large curvature exist in sufficient numbers on all scales to promote scattering. The parallel mean free path predicted by the power-law statistics of the curvature strength scales in proportion to $r_{g}^{0.3}\,\ell _{c}^{0.7}$ ($\ell _{c}$ is the coherence scale of the turbulence), which is of direct interest for cosmic-ray phenomenology. Particle tracking in that numerical simulation confirms that the magnetic moment diffuses through localized, violent interactions, in agreement with the above picture. Correspondingly, the overall transport process is non-Brownian up to length scales $\gtrsim \ell _{c}$.

A collisionless shock is a self-organized structure where fields and particle distributions are mutually adjusted to ensure a stable mass, momentum and energy transfer from the upstream to the downstream region. This adjustment may involve rippling, reformation or whatever else is needed to maintain the shock. The fields inside the shock front are produced due to the motion of charged particles, which is in turn governed by the fields. The overshoot arises due to the deceleration of the ion flow by the increasing magnetic field, so that the drop of the dynamic pressure should be compensated by the increase of the magnetic pressure. The role of the overshoot is to regulate ion reflection, thus properly adjusting the downstream ion temperature and kinetic pressure and also speeding up the collisionless relaxation and reducing the anisotropy of the eventually gyrotropized distributions.

Thanks to the isomorphism between the drift-Poisson and Euler equations, inviscid two-dimensional fluid experiments can be performed in magnetized, single-component plasmas in Penning–Malmberg traps. Within this analogy, a trapped electron plasma column is equivalent to a two-dimensional vortex. Here, we focus our attention on the generation of V-states, i.e. $l$-fold symmetric rotating vorticity patches where the deformation with respect to the circular cross-section has reached the nonlinear regime. We detail a linear theoretical analysis and devise an experimental routine to generate V-states through the precise excitation of single Kelvin–Helmholtz perturbations in a magnetized electron plasma. This technique makes use of suitable multipolar rotating electric fields, which are shown to be able to select the desired wavemode. In particular, with rotating fields, a hardware limitation in the highest accessible mode is removed and nonlinear Kelvin–Helmholtz waves of generic order $l$ can be attained, which pave the way for further investigations on the evolution and stability properties of V-states. Systematic experimental results for the selective mode growth in the linear and nonlinear regimes up to saturation and collapse are discussed.

This paper presents a magnetohydrodynamic model that describes the small-amplitude fluctuations with wavelengths comparable to ion inertial length in the presence of a relativistically strong mean magnetic field. The set of derived equations is virtually identical to the non-relativistic Hall reduced magnetohydrodynamics (Schekochihin et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 85, 2019, 905850303), differing only by a few constants that take into account the relativistic corrections. This means that all the properties of kinetic Alfvén turbulence and ion cyclotron turbulence inherent in the non-relativistic Hall regime persist unchanged even in a magnetically dominated regime.

Guiding-centre orbit-following simulations of the charge exchange (CX) loss of neutral beam injection (NBI) ions are presented. The finite Larmor radius (FLR) effect in the fast ion–neutral collision can be included in guiding-centre orbit-following simulations by using the gyroaverage method. It is proved that the neutralization probability of fast ions computed by using the gyroaverage method in the guiding-centre orbit simulation is roughly the same as that computed in the full-orbit simulation when the time step in the guiding-centre simulation is the order of the gyroperiod. The CX losses of NBI fast ions for two NBIs in the EAST tokamak have been simulated by the guiding-centre orbit-following code GYCAVA, and the FLR effect in the fast ion–neutral collision on CX losses has been numerically studied. The CX effect of the fast ion–neutral collision can significantly enhance NBI ion losses on EAST. The FLR effect in the fast ion–neutral collision can enhance the CX loss. Vertical asymmetry of localized heat loads induced by CX losses is found, which is related to the FLR effect of fast ions and the strong radial gradient of the neutral density near the plasma edge. Heat loads induced by CX losses are localized in the regions near the poloidal angle $\theta =-60^\circ$, because the likelihood of exchanging charge is the largest at gyrophase $\xi ={\rm \pi}$, and this leads to fast downwards moving neutrals. Fast ion loss fractions induced by CX increase with the neutral density increasing.

The transport phenomena of dust particles have been widely observed in fusion plasmas. In this article, we report the observations of dust fragmentations in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). A dust particle splits into two daughter particles and their motions are recorded before and after the breakup with a fast video camera. The trajectories of the daughter particles in the experiment are consistent with equation-of-motion simulations. The stability of a rotating charged particle in the plasma is briefly discussed.

Lane formation dynamics of driven three-dimensional pair-ion plasmas (PIP) is investigated. Extensive Langevin dynamics simulation is performed to study the influence of an external electric field on the behaviour of the PIP system. In our model, one half of the particles are pushed into the field direction by an external force $\boldsymbol {F}_{A}$ while the other half are pulled into the opposite direction by an external force $\boldsymbol {F}_{B}$. We show that if $\boldsymbol {F}_{A}$ and $\boldsymbol {F}_{B}$ are parallel, the system undergoes a non-equilibrium phase transition from a disordered state to a lane formation state parallel to the field direction with increasing field strength. The lanes are formed by the same kind of particles moving collectively with the field. The lane order parameter has been implemented to detect phase transition. Further, we show the lane formation in the presence of a time-varying external electric field. In particular, the effect of parallel forces are investigated. Unlike the previously reported two-dimensional case (Sarma, et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 27, 2020, p. 012106; Baruah, et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 87, issue 2, 2021, p. 905870202), for the time-varying electric field case, spontaneous formation and the breaking of lanes are not observed for all values of applied frequencies; however, the orderness varies and spontaneous formation and breaking of lanes is observed for values close to a critical frequency $\omega _c$. Further, some aspects of the lane formation dynamics of a PIP system are also studied in the presence of an external magnetic field, which reveals that the presence of an external magnetic field accelerates the lane formation process and introduces a drift of the lanes in a direction perpendicular to both electric and magnetic fields.

Some internal transport barriers in tokamaks have been related to the vicinity of extrema of the plasma equilibrium profiles. This effect is numerically investigated by considering the guiding-centre trajectories of plasma particles undergoing $\boldsymbol {E}\times \boldsymbol {B}$ drift motion, considering that the electric field has a stationary non-monotonic radial profile and an electrostatic fluctuation. In addition, the equilibrium configuration has a non-monotonic safety factor profile. The numerical integration of the equations of motion yields a symplectic map with shearless barriers. By changing the safety factor profile parameters, the appearance and breakup of these shearless curves are observed. The shearless curve's successive breakup and recovery are explained using concepts from bifurcation theory. We also present bifurcation sequences associated with the creation of multiple shearless curves. Physical consequences of scenarios with multiple shearless curves are discussed.

In the classical treatment the screening phenomenon of electric fields in a plasma is solely caused by charged particles, i.e. electrons and ions. In contrast, the present consideration focuses on the role of neutrals in a situation when the correlations between the charged and neutral components of the plasma medium turn rather significant. The consideration is entirely based on the renormalization procedure for interparticle interactions, which takes into account collective events in the generalized Poisson–Boltzmann equation relating the true microscopic potentials with their effective macroscopic counterparts. A meaningful approach is proposed to analytically derive the screening length from an appropriate assumption on the asymptotic behaviour of the macroscopic potential at large interparticle separations. It is clearly demonstrated that the neutral component really affects the screening length when the plasma reaches states corresponding to warm dense matter conditions. It is also shown that, at certain critical values of the plasma parameters, the character of the screening changes from exponential to oscillatory decay.

In Part 1 of the companion paper, we have investigated lane formation dynamics of driven three-dimensional (3-D) pair-ion plasmas (PIP) in the presence of parallel external forcing using extensive Langevin dynamics (LD) simulation. In continuation of the work, in this Part 2, we investigate lane formation dynamics in the presence of non-parallel external forcing, and the effect of both constant and time varying forces are studied. In our model, positively charged PIP particles are pushed into the field direction by an external force $\boldsymbol{F}_{A} = E_A\cos \omega _At$ while the negatively charged PIP particles are pulled by an external force $\boldsymbol{F}_{B} = E_B\cos \omega _Bt$ in a direction perpendicular to the external force $\boldsymbol{F}_{A}$. We show that in the case of non-parallel forces, the lanes are observed with an orientation (characterised by angle of inclination $\theta$) tilted in the direction of the force difference vector ($\boldsymbol{F}_{A} - \boldsymbol{F}_{B}$). The instantaneous lane order parameter, order parameter with gradient of angle of inclination ($\phi (\theta )$) and distribution function of $\Delta \theta$ have been implemented to characterise the phase transition. A spontaneous formation and breaking of lanes are observed when under the influence of time-varying forces. The effect is further investigated for three different situations: first, when $\omega _A \neq 0$ and $\omega _B = 0$; second, when $\omega _A = \omega _B \neq 0$; and third, for $\omega _A \neq \omega _B \neq 0$. Our study reveals that for the first case, a periodic oscillation of angle of inclination is observed. If oscillating forces of the same frequency are applied, the oscillation in angle of inclination disappears, and spontaneous formation and breaking of lanes is observed. However, in the presence of forces with different frequencies, flipping of lane inclination between the positive and negative domain of $\theta$ is observed. Further, some aspects of the lane formation dynamics of a PIP system is also studied in the presence of an external magnetic field where the lane formation dynamics is found to be accelerated.

We present a general method for optimizing the configuration of an experimental diagnostic to minimize uncertainty and bias in inferred quantities from experimental data. The method relies on Bayesian inference to sample the posterior using a physical model of the experiment and instrument. The mean squared error (MSE) of posterior samples relative to true values obtained from a high fidelity model (HFM) across multiple configurations is used as the optimization metric. The method is demonstrated on a common problem in dense plasma research, the use of radiation detectors to estimate physical properties of the plasma. We optimize a set of filtered photoconducting diamond detectors to minimize the MSE in the inferred X-ray spectrum, from which we can derive quantities like the electron temperature. In the optimization we self-consistently account for uncertainties in the instrument response with appropriate prior probabilities. We also develop a penalty term, acting as a soft constraint on the optimization, to produce results that avoid negative instrumental effects. We show results of the optimization and compare with two other reference instrument configurations to demonstrate the improvement. The MSE with respect to the total inferred X-ray spectrum is reduced by more than an order of magnitude using our optimized configuration compared with the two reference cases. We also extract multiple other quantities from the inference and compare with the HFM, showing an overall improvement in multiple inferred quantities like the electron temperature, the peak in the X-ray spectrum and the total radiated energy.

We study the underlying physics of cosmic ray (CR)-driven instabilities that play a crucial role for CR transport across a wide range of scales, from interstellar to galaxy cluster environments. By examining the linear dispersion relation of CR-driven instabilities in a magnetised electron–ion background plasma, we establish that both the intermediate and gyroscale instabilities have a resonant origin, and show that these resonances can be understood via a simple graphical interpretation. These instabilities destabilise wave modes parallel to the large-scale background magnetic field at significantly distinct scales and with very different phase speeds. Furthermore, we show that approximating the electron–ion background plasma with either magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) or Hall-MHD fails to capture the fastest-growing instability in the linear regime, namely the intermediate-scale instability. This finding highlights the importance of accurately characterising the background plasma for resolving the most unstable wave modes. Finally, we discuss the implications of the different phase speeds of unstable modes on particle–wave scattering. Further work is needed to investigate the relative importance of these two instabilities in the nonlinear, saturated regime and to develop a physical understanding of the effective CR transport coefficients in large-scale CR hydrodynamics theories.

An experimental study to investigate the effect of an external magnetic field on the propagation of ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) has been carried out in hydrogen plasma containing two-temperature electrons and dust grains. It is a first step in understanding the propagation properties of IAWs in such an environment. A low-pressure hot cathode discharge method is chosen for plasma production. The desired two-electron groups with distinct temperatures are achieved by inserting two magnetic cages with a cusp-shaped magnetic field of different surface field strengths in the same chamber. The dust grains are dropped into the plasma with the help of a dust dropper, which gain negative charges by interacting with the plasma. The IAWs are excited with the help of a mesh grid inserted into the plasma. A planar Langmuir probe is used as a detector to detect the IAWs. The time-of-flight technique has been applied to measure the phase velocity of the IAWs. The results suggest that in the presence of a magnetic field, the phase velocity of IAWs increases, whereas introducing the dust particles leads to the lower phase velocity. The magnetic field is believed to have a significant effect on the wave damping. This study will aid in utilising IAWs as a diagnostic tool to estimate plasma parameters in the presence of an external magnetic field.
