This paper proposes a framework to assess the influence of Offshore Wind Farms (OWFs) on maritime traffic flow based on raw Automatic Identification System (AIS) data collected before and after the installation of the offshore wind turbines. The framework includes modules for data acquisition, data filtering and statistical analysis. The statistical analysis characterises the influence of an OWF on maritime traffic in terms of minimum passing distances and lateral distribution of the ship trajectories near the OWF. The framework is applied to a specific route for which AIS data is available before and after an OWF installation. The impacts of the OWF on marine traffic are diverse and depend on the ship type categories. This paper quantitatively characterises an OWF's influence on a specific route that is probabilistically modelled, which is important for further studies on OWF site selection and maritime traffic risk assessment and management.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the significance of the human element in accidents involving Greek-flagged ships, during 1993–2006, worldwide. In this context, the human element as a general factor of accident initiation and most importantly its constituent components, in the form of specific onboard duties (functions) and/or off-board (mainly ashore) entities, were presented and analysed. It was found that 57·1% of all accidents were attributed to the human element, whereas 75·8% of the latter were detected onboard and 80·4% of the onboard human-induced accidents were linked to errors and violations of the ship's master. Furthermore, since the timeframe examined covers the implementation of the ISM Code, the current analysis was aimed at producing valuable information with regard to its effectiveness upon Greek shipping. In this respect, a 12·2% reduction of human-caused accidents has been found during the post-ISM period. Finally, the association between specific accident types and human element components was examined utilising the technique of correspondence analysis and it was found that groundings and collisions were closely related to the ship's Master, whereas mechanical failures and fires were associated with the engine officers, and cargo shifts and flooding with bridge officers.

The widespread use of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) has had a significant impact on maritime technology. AIS enables the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) not only to offer commonly known functions such as identification, tracking and monitoring of vessels, but also to provide rich real-time information that is useful for marine traffic investigation, statistical analysis and theoretical research. However, due to the rapid accumulation of AIS observation data, the VTS platform is often unable quickly and effectively to absorb and analyze it. Traditional observation and analysis methods are becoming less suitable for the modern AIS generation of VTS. In view of this, we applied the same data mining technique used for business intelligence discovery (in Customer Relation Management (CRM) business marketing) to the analysis of AIS observation data. This recasts the marine traffic problem as a business-marketing problem and integrates technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), database management systems, data warehousing and data mining to facilitate the discovery of hidden and valuable information in a huge amount of observation data. Consequently, this provides the marine traffic managers with a useful strategic planning resource.

This paper reviews currently existing fault-tolerant navigation system architectures and data fusion methods used in the design and development of integrated aircraft navigation systems and also compares their advantages and disadvantages. Four fault-tolerant navigation system architectures are reviewed and the associated Kalman filter architectures and algorithms are discussed. These techniques have been used in most integrated aircraft navigation systems. The aim of this review paper is to provide a guide for navigation system designers to develop future aircraft multisensor navigation systems.

A dynamic collision avoidance algorithm via layered artificial potential field with collision cone (LAPF-CC) is proposed to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional artificial potential field method in dynamic collision avoidance. In order to reduce invalid actions for collision avoidance, the potential field is divided into four layers, and a collision cone with risk detection function is introduced. Relative distance and relative velocity are used as variables to establish the risk of collision, and a torque named ‘speed torque’ is constructed. Speed torque, attractive force and repulsive force work together to change the speed and heading of the unmanned surface vehicle (USV). Driving force and torque are controlled separately, which makes it possible for the LAPF-CC algorithm to be used for real-time collision avoidance control of underactuated USVs. Simulation results show that the LAPF-CC algorithm performs well in dynamic collision avoidance.

The paper, an edited and shortened version of the original, discusses a new approach to the display of collision threat parameter areas, obtained as a result of theoretical considerations. It can be applied to radar-computer anti-collision systems as well as manual radar plots.

With the development of digital techniques, and electronic digital computers in particular, radar-computer anti-collision systems are now aboard ships. Digital processing of signals and data in such systems can be divided into three stages as follows:

(a) Primary processing, which includes an analysis of radar signals within one rotation of the radar antenna. A result of this processing would be the position coordinates of detected objects. For relatively simple algorithms and high speed of analysis, special devices are usually employed.

(b) A secondary processing, which includes a correlation of the information obtained in the primary processing stage; the objects' position coordinates in consecutive antenna rotations; and an estimate of position, motion and approach parameters. For secondary processing devices general-purpose mini- and microcomputers are usually applied.

(c) A graphical display of the calculation.

This paper comprehensively investigates the fault exclusion problem in multi-constellation Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). In future GNSS, the heightened likelihood of fault detection events will cause more interruptions in the continuity of the navigation operation. The main contribution of this paper is to establish the theoretical basis to quantify the contributions of fault events on continuity risk, therefore allowing us to assess the desired exclusion function performance based on specific continuity requirements. Accordingly, a new real-time exclusion algorithm is developed, for which the upper bounds on integrity risks are rigorously derived. Using the new method, performance is comprehensively investigated for two important civil aircraft navigation operations using various numbers of constellations. We show that high service availability can be achieved for both operations.

For multi-Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constellations, the Geometric Dilution of Precision (GDOP) is an important parameter utilised for the selection of satellites. This paper has derived new formulae to describe the change of GDOP. The result shows that, for GNSS single point positioning solutions, if one more satellite belonging to the existing tracked multi-GNSS constellation used in the single point positioning solution is added, the GDOP always decreases with the number of the added satellites. On the other hand, when the constellation of the added satellite is not from the tracked existing constellations, the different numbers of the added satellites have different influences on the change of GDOP. Generally, adding one satellite from another constellation into the existing multi-GNSS constellations will increase the GDOP, but adding two satellites will decrease the GDOP compared with adding one from another constellation. Additionally, the GDOP also increases in the cases of adding two satellites from two different constellations into the tracked existing constellations.

Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) were large, heavy and expensive until the development of cost-effective inertial sensors constructed with Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). However, the large errors and poor error repeatability of MEMS sensors make them inadequate for application in many situations even with frequent calibration. To solve this problem, a systematic error auto-compensation method, Rotation Modulation (RM) is introduced and detailed. RM does no damage to autonomy, which is one of the most important characteristics of an INS. In this paper, the RM effects on navigation performance are analysed and different forms of rotation schemes are discussed. A MEMS-based INS with the RM technique applied is developed and specific calibrations related to rotation are investigated. Experiments on the developed system are conducted and results verify that RM can significantly improve navigation performance of MEMS-based INS. The attitude accuracy is improved by a factor of 5, and velocity/position accuracy by a factor of 10.

As technology continues to develop, information and communication technology and operational technology on board ships are increasingly being networked, and more frequently connected to the Internet. The introduction of cyber systems changes the work environment with the aim of decreasing the workload for the navigator, but at the same time introduces more complexity and vulnerabilities that in turn may alter the competencies needed to perform safe and efficient navigation. Contemporary examples of how cyber-attacks can distort situational awareness and interfere with operations are needed to enhance the navigator's competence through increased system awareness. This paper demonstrates some of the possible attack vectors that a cyber-attack can present to a ship, as well as discussing the plausibility and consequences of such attacks. In this study we provide a practical example to better understand how one can demystify cyber threats in order to enhance the navigators' competence.

The paper presents the continuation of the author's research on ship track planning by means of Evolutionary Algorithms (EA). The presented method uses EA to search for an optimal set of safe tracks for all ships involved in an encounter. Until now the method assumed good visibility – compliance with standard rules of the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS, 1972). However, in restricted visibility, when Rule 19 applies instead of Rules 11 to 18, the problem is a different one. Therefore this paper introduces the extended method, with a focus on compliance with Rule 19 and its implications. It includes descriptions of detecting, penalizing and eliminating violations of Rule 19. The method has been implemented and the paper contains sample results of computer simulation tests carried out for ship encounters in restricted visibility in both open and restricted waters. They confirm the effectiveness of the chosen approach and suggest that the method could be applied in on board decision support systems.

The use of radar information for collision avoidance is common, however it is effective only for constant values of ship motion parameters. As information delays or information errors occur, it is reasonable to supplement the information derived from radar with another information system. An ideal system should operate automatically and continuously. A system that appears to be suitable to provide this kind of information is the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which may be classified as a radio communication system that uses radio waves to transmit data with regard to ship motion parameters. In this paper the topic of integrity and completeness of AIS information is discussed and the research results for the completeness and integrity of dynamic information are presented. In addition, the outcomes of AIS information correctness from the Gulf of Gdańsk were compared with studies carried out in the Baltic Sea, east of Bornholm, between Trelleborg and Arkona. The results of research for AIS dynamic information with the highest completeness (Position, Course over Ground and Speed over Ground) are presented. The research outcomes presented in the paper lead to the conclusion that AIS could deliver useful supplementary information in the process of collision avoidance.

In this paper, back-propagation (BP) neural networks (NN) are applied to the GPS satellite Geometric Dilution of Precision (GDOP) approximation. The methods using BPNN are general enough to be applicable regardless of the number of satellite signals being processed by the receiver. BPNN is employed to learn the functional relationships firstly, between the entries of a measurement matrix and the eigenvalues and thus generate GDOP, and secondly, between the entries of a measurement matrix and the GDOP, both without inverting a matrix. Consequently, two sets of entries and two sets of output variables, respectively, are used that in total yield four types of mapping architectures. Simulation results from these four architectures are presented. The performance and computational benefit of neural network-based GDOP approximation are explored.

A robust state estimation technique based on the Huber-based Cubature Kalman Filter (HCKF) is proposed for Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation processing. The Cubature Kalman Filter (CKF) employs a third-degree spherical-radial cubature rule to compute the Gaussian weighted integration, such that the numerical instability induced by round-off errors can be avoided. In GPS navigation, the filter-based estimation of the position and velocity states can be severely degraded due to contaminated measurements caused by outliers or deviation from a Gaussian distribution assumption. For the signals contaminated with non-Gaussian noise or outliers, a robust scheme combining the Huber M-estimation methodology and the CKF framework is beneficial where the Huber M-estimation methodology is used to reformulate the measurement information of the CKF. GPS navigation processing using the HCKF algorithm has been carried out and the performance has been compared to those based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) and CKF approaches. Simulation and experimental results presented in this paper confirm the effectiveness of the method.

The paper presents the continuation of the author's research on Evolutionary Sets of Safe Ship Trajectories (ESoSST) methodology. In an earlier paper (Szlapczynski, 2011) the author described the foundations of this methodology, which used Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) to search for an optimal set of safe trajectories for all the ships involved in an encounter. The methodology was originally designed for open waters or restricted waters when only the standard Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS, 1972) rules apply. However, within Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS), where additionally Rule 10 of COLREGS applies, the problem is much more complex and a new solution is needed. This paper introduces the extended ESoSST methodology, with a focus on changes that have to be made to obey Rule 10 and fully support TSS. These changes include detecting and penalizing TSS violations, as well as the pre-processing phase (generating the initial population, which includes predefined TSS-compliant tracks). The methodology has been designed for possible application in Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) centres. Its new mechanisms are presented with details. The examples are included of the results of the computer simulation tests carried out for the Gulf of Gdansk TSS to illustrate the methodology's effectiveness and functional scope.

As Earth-based radio tracking navigation is severely limited because of communications constraints and low relative navigation accuracy, autonomous optical navigation capabilities are essential for both robotic and manned deep-space exploration missions. Image processing is considered one of the key technologies for autonomous optical navigation to extract high-precision navigation observables from a raw image. New image processing algorithms for deep-space autonomous optical navigation are developed in this paper. First, multiple image pre-processing and the Canny edge detection algorithm are adopted to identify the edges of target celestial bodies and simultaneously remove the potential false edges. Secondly, two new limb profile fitting algorithms are proposed based on the Least Squares method and the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, respectively, with the assumption that the perspective projection of a target celestial body on the image plane will form an ellipse. Next, the line-of-sight (LOS) vector from the spacecraft to the centroid of the observed object is obtained. This is taken as the navigation measurement observable and input to the navigation filter algorithm. Finally, the image processing algorithms developed in this paper are validated using both synthetic simulated images and real flight images from the MESSENGER mission.

The integration of GPS and INS observations has been extensively investigated in recent years. Current systems are commonly based on the integration of INS data and the double differenced GPS measurements from two GPS receivers in which one is used as a reference receiver set up at a precisely surveyed control point and another is as the rover receiver whose position is to be determined. The requirement of a base receiver is to eliminate the significant GPS measurement errors related to GPS satellites, signal transmission and GPS receivers by double differencing measurements from the two receivers. With the advent of precise satellite orbit and clock products, the un-differenced GPS measurements from a single GPS receiver can be applied to output accurate position solutions at centimetre level using a positioning technology known as precise point positioning (PPP). This then opens an opportunity for the integration of un-differenced GPS measurements with INS for precise position and attitude determination. In this paper, a tightly coupled un-differenced GPS/INS system will be developed and described. The mathematical models for both INS and un-differenced GPS measurements will be introduced. The methods for mitigating GPS measurement errors will also be presented. A field test has been conducted and the results indicate that the integration of un-differenced GPS and INS observations can provide position and velocity solutions comparable with current double difference GPS/INS integration systems.

A new nonlinear robust filter is proposed in this paper to deal with the outliers of an integrated Global Positioning System/Strapdown Inertial Navigation System (GPS/SINS) navigation system. The influence of different design parameters for an H∞ cubature Kalman filter is analysed. It is found that when the design parameter is small, the robustness of the filter is stronger. However, the design parameter is easily out of step in the Riccati equation and the filter easily diverges. In this respect, a singular value decomposition algorithm is employed to replace the Cholesky decomposition in the robust cubature Kalman filter. With large conditions for the design parameter, the new filter is more robust. The test results demonstrate that the proposed filter algorithm is more reliable and effective in dealing with the outliers in the data sets produced by the integrated GPS/SINS system.

Traditionally, GNSS receiver autonomous integrity monitoring (RAIM) has been based upon single epoch solutions. RAIM can be improved considerably when available dynamic information is fused together with the GNSS range measurements in a Kalman filter. However, while the Kalman filtering technique is widely accepted to provide optimal estimates for the navigation parameters of a dynamic platform, assuming the state and observation models are correct, it is still susceptible to unmodelled errors. Furthermore, significant deviations from the assumed models for dynamic systems may also occur. It is therefore necessary that the state estimation procedure is complemented with effective and reliable integrity measures capable of identifying both measurement and modelling errors. Within this paper, fundamental equations required for the effective detection and identification of outliers in a kinematic GNSS positioning and navigation system are described together with the reliability and separability measures. These quality measures are implemented using a Kalman filtering procedure formulated with Gauss-Markov models where the state estimates are derived from least squares principles. Detailed simulations and analyses have been performed to assess the impact of the dynamic information on GNSS RAIM with respect to outlier detection and identification, reliability and separability. The ability of the RAIM algorithms to detect and identify dynamic modelling errors is also investigated.

The performance of Global Positioning System and Inertial Navigation System (GPS/INS) integrated navigation is reduced when GPS is blocked. This paper proposes an algorithm to overcome the condition where GPS is unavailable. Together with a parameter-optimised Genetic Algorithm (GA), a Support Vector Regression (SVR) algorithm is used to construct the mapping function between the specific force, angular rate increments of INS measurements and the increments of the GPS position. During GPS outages, the real-time pseudo-GPS position is predicted with the mapping function, and the corresponding covariance matrix is estimated by an improved adaptive filtering algorithm. A GPS/INS integration scheme is demonstrated where the vehicle travels along a straight line and around a curve, with respect to both low-speed-stable and high-speed-unstable navigation platforms. The results show that the proposed algorithm provides a better performance when GPS is unavailable.
