The main difficulty in the theory of non-abelian cohomology is that for cosimplicial groups only zero-th and first dimensional cohomotopy are known. In this article we introduce a new class of cosimplicial groups, called centralised cosimplicial groups, for which we are able to define a second cohomotopy, with all expected properties. The main examples of such cosimplicial groups come from 2-categories.

We discuss a geometric model for equivariant algebraic K-theory of quasiprojective varieties. This is inspired by and extends earlier work of Grayson-Walker on algebraic K-theory and related theories. Our main result is used by Hornbostel-Heller in their work on equivariant semi-topological K-homology and a theorem of Thomason.

Let G be a reductive algebraic group over a field k, such that every semisimple normal subgroup of G has isotropic rank ≥ 2, i.e. contains (Gm)2. Let K1G be the non-stable K1-functor associated to G, also called the Whitehead group of G. We show that K1G(k) = K1G (k[X1 ,…, Xn]) for any n ≥ 1. If k is perfect, this implies that K1G (R) = K1G (R[X]) for any regular k-algebra R. If k is infinite perfect, one also deduces that K1G (R) → K1G (K) is injective for any local regular k-algebra R with the fraction field K.

We examine the theory of connective algebraic K-theory, , defined by taking the −1 connective cover of algebraic K-theory with respect to Voevodsky's slice tower in the motivic stable homotopy category. We extend to a bi-graded oriented duality theory when the base scheme is the spectrum of a field k of characteristic zero. The homology theory may be viewed as connective algebraic G-theory. We identify for X a finite type k-scheme with the image of in , where is the abelian category of coherent sheaves on X with support in dimension at most n; this agrees with the (2n,n) part of the theory of connective algebraic K-theory defined by Cai. We also show that the classifying map from algebraic cobordism identifies with the universal oriented Borel-Moore homology theory having formal group law u + υ − βuυ with coefficient ring ℤ[β]. As an application, we show that every pure dimension d finite type k-scheme has a well-defined fundamental class [X]CK in ΩdCK(X), and this fundamental class is functorial with respect to pull-back for l.c.i. morphisms.

Let F be a field, let G = Gal(/F) be its absolute Galois group, and let R(G,k) be the representation ring of G over a suitable field k. In this preprint we construct a ring homomorphism from the mod 2 Milnor K-theory k*(F) to the graded ring grR(G,k) associated to Grothendieck's γ-filtration. We study this map in particular cases, as well as a related map involving the W-group of F, rather than G. The latter is an isomorphism in all cases considered.

Naturally this echoes the Milnor conjecture (now a theorem), which states that k*(F) is isomorphic to the mod 2 cohomology of the absolute Galois group G, and to the graded Witt ring grW(F).

The machinery developed to obtain the above results seems to have independent interest in algebraic topology. We are led to construct an analog of the classical Chern character, which does not involve complex vector bundles and Chern classes but rather real vector bundles and Stiefel-Whitney classes. Thus we show the existence of a ring homomorphism whose source is the graded ring associated to the corresponding K-theory ring KO(X) of the topological space X, again with respect to the γ-filtration, and whose target is a certain subquotient of H*(X, F2).

In order to define this subquotient, we introduce a collection of distinguished Steenrod operations. They are related to Stiefel-Whitney classes by combinatorial identities.

We study the E-theory group E[0, 1](A, B) for a class of C*-algebras over the unit interval with finitely many singular points, called elementary C[0, 1]-algebras. We use results on E-theory over non-Hausdorff spaces to describe E[0, 1](A, B) where A is a sky-scraper algebra. Then we compute E[0, 1](A, B) for two elementary C[0, 1]-algebras in the case where the fibers A(x) and B(y) of A and B are such that E1 (A(x), B(y)) = 0 for all x, y ∈ [0, 1]. This result applies whenever the fibers satisfy the UCT, their K0-groups are free of finite rank and their K1-groups are zero. In that case we show that E[0, 1](A, B) is isomorphic to Hom(0(A), 0(B)), the group of morphisms of the K-theory sheaves of A and B. As an application, we give a streamlined partially new proof of a classification result due to the first author and Elliott.

Let M be a closed manifold and α: π1 (M) → Un a representation. We give a purely K-theoretic description of the associated element in the K-theory group of M with ℝ/ℤ-coefficients ([α] ∈ K1 (M; ℝ/ℤ)). To that end, it is convenient to describe the ℝ/ℤ-K-theory as a relative K-theory of the unital inclusion of ℂ into a finite von Neumann algebra B. We use the following fact: there is, associated with α, a finite von Neumann algebra B together with a flat bundle ℰ → M with fibers B, such that Eα ⊗ ℰ is canonically isomorphic with ℂn ⊗ ℰ, where Eα denotes the flat bundle with fiber ℂn associated with α. We also discuss the spectral flow and rho type description of the pairing of the class [α] with the K-homology class of an elliptic selfadjoint (pseudo)-differential operator D of order 1.

We introduce a Milnor type K-group associated to commutative algebraic groups over a perfect field. It is an additive variant of Somekawa's K-group. We show that the K-group associated to the additive group and q multiplicative groups of a field is isomorphic to the space of absolute Kähler differentials of degree q of the field, thus giving us a geometric interpretation of the space of absolute Kähler differentials. We also show that the K-group associated to the additive group and Jacobian variety of a curve is isomorphic to the homology group of a certain complex.

We consider the algebraic K-theory of a truncated polynomial algebra in several commuting variables, . This naturally leads to a new generalization of the big Witt vectors. If k is a perfect field of positive characteristic we describe the K-theory computation in terms of a cube of these Witt vectors on ℕn. If the characteristic of k does not divide any of the ai we compute the K-groups explicitly. We also compute the K-groups modulo torsion for k = ℤ.

To understand this K-theory spectrum we use the cyclotomic trace map to topological cyclic homology, and write as the iterated homotopy cofiber of an n-cube of spectra, each of which is easier to understand.

In [HL99], the heat operator of a Bismut superconnection for a family of generalized Dirac operators is defined along the leaves of a foliation with Hausdorff groupoid. The Novikov-Shubin invariants of the Dirac operators were assumed greater than three times the codimension of the foliation. It was then shown that the associated heat operator converges to the Chern character of the index bundle of the operator. In [BH08], this result was improved by reducing the requirement on the Novikov-Shubin invariants to one half of the codimension. In this paper, we construct examples which show that this is the best possible result.

This paper uses differential-graded methods to give a streamlined proof of a theorem of Foxby-Halvorson. The theorem states that certain relative K-groups made from complexes with bounded (but arbitrarily long) length coincide with similar K-groups in which one sets an absolute bound on the length of the complexes.

We develop equivariant KK–theory for locally compact groupoid actions by Morita equivalences on real and complex graded C*-algebras. Functoriality with respect to generalised morphisms and Bott periodicity are discussed. We introduce Stiefel-Whitney classes for real or complex equivariant vector bundles over locally compact groupoids to establish the Thom isomorphism theorem in twisted groupoid K–theory.

For a compact simply connected simple Lie group G with an involution α, we compute the G ⋊ ℤ/2-equivariant K-theory of G where G acts by conjugation and ℤ/2 acts either by α or by g ↦ α(g)−1. We also give a representation-theoretic interpretation of those groups, as well as of KG(G).

We construct a duality isomorphism in equivariant periodic cyclic homology analogous to Baaj-Skandalis duality in equivariant Kasparov theory. As a consequence we obtain general versions of the Green-Julg theorem and the dual Green-Julg theorem in periodic cyclic theory.

Throughout we work within the framework of bornological quantum groups, thus in particular incorporating at the same time actions of arbitrary classical Lie groups as well as actions of compact or discrete quantum groups. An important ingredient in the construction of our duality isomorphism is the notion of a modular pair for a bornological quantum group, closely related to the concept introduced by Connes and Moscovici in their work on cyclic cohomology for Hopf algebras.

We consider the algebraic group GL1 (A), where A is a division algebra of prime degree over a field F, and the associated motive in the Voevodsky category of motivic complexes (F). We relate the motive of GL1 (A) to the motive of the Čech simplicial scheme χ, associated to the Severi-Brauer variety of A, and compute the second differential in the resulting spectral sequence for motivic cohomology.

In this paper we study the cyclic cohomology of certain ×-Hopf algebras: universal enveloping algebras, quantum algebraic tori, the Connes-Moscovici ×-Hopf algebroids and the Kadison bialgebroids. Introducing their stable anti Yetter-Drinfeld modules and cocyclic modules, we compute their cyclic cohomology. Furthermore, we provide a pairing for the cyclic cohomology of ×-Hopf algebras which generalizes the Connes-Moscovici characteristic map to ×-Hopf algebras. This enables us to transfer the ×-Hopf algebra cyclic cocycles to algebra cyclic cocycles.

A multivariable adjunction is the generalisation of the notion of a 2-variable adjunction, the classical example being the hom/tensor/cotensor trio of functors, to n + 1 functors of n variables. In the presence of multivariable adjunctions, natural transformations between certain composites built from multivariable functors have “dual” forms. We refer to corresponding natural transformations as multivariable or parametrised mates, generalising the mates correspondence for ordinary adjunctions, which enables one to pass between natural transformations involving left adjoints to those involving right adjoints. A central problem is how to express the naturality (or functoriality) of the parametrised mates, giving a precise characterization of the dualities so-encoded.

We present the notion of “cyclic double multicategory” as a structure in which to organise multivariable adjunctions and mates. While the standard mates correspondence is described using an isomorphism of double categories, the multivariable version requires the framework of “double multicategories”. Moreover, we show that the analogous isomorphisms of double multicategories give a cyclic action on the multimaps, yielding the notion of “cyclic double multicategory”. The work is motivated by and applied to Riehl's approach to algebraic monoidal model categories.

In the world of chain complexes En-algebras are the analogues of based n-fold loop spaces in the category of topological spaces. Fresse showed that operadic En-homology of an En-algebra computes the homology of an n-fold algebraic delooping. The aim of this paper is to construct two spectral sequences for calculating these homology groups and to treat some concrete classes of examples such as Hochschild cochains, graded polynomial algebras and chains on iterated loop spaces. In characteristic zero we gain an identification of the summands in Pirashvili's Hodge decomposition of higher order Hochschild homology in terms of derived functors of indecomposables of Gerstenhaber algebras and as the homology of exterior and symmetric powers of derived Kähler differentials.

B. Schuster [19] proved that the mod 2 Morava K-theory K(s)*(BG) is evenly generated for all groups G of order 32. For the four groups G of order 32 with the numbers 38, 39, 40 and 41 in the Hall-Senior list [11], the ring K(2)*(BG) has been shown to be generated as a K(2)*-module by transferred Euler classes. In this paper, we show this for arbitrary s and compute the ring structure of K(s)*(BG). Namely, we show that K(s)*(BG) is the quotient of a polynomial ring in 6 variables over K(s)*(pt) by an ideal for which we list explicit generators.
