In the propagation and evolution of sea waves, previous studies pointed out that the occurrence of the freak wave height is significantly related to the quasi-resonant four-wave interaction in the modulated waves. From numerical--experimental study over an uneven bottom, the nonlinear effect caused by the bathymetry change also contributes to the occurrence of extreme events in unidirectional waves. To comprehensively analyse the two-dimensional wavefield, this study develops an evolution model for a directional random wavefield based on the depth-modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which considers the nonlinear resonant interactions and the wave shoaling the shallow water. Through Monte Carlo simulation, we discuss the directional effect on the four-wave interaction in the wave train and the maximum wave height distribution from deep to shallow water with a slow varying slope. The numerical result indicates that the directional spreading has a dispersion effect on the freak wave height. In a shallow-water environment, this effect becomes weak, and the bottom topography change is the main influencing factor in the wave evolution.

Collision of two counterflowing gravity currents of equal densities and heights was investigated by means of three-dimensional high-resolution simulations with the goal of understanding the flow structures and energetics in the collision region in more detail. The lifetime of collision is approximately $3 \tilde {H}/\tilde {u}_f$, where $\tilde {H}$ is the depth of heavy and ambient fluids, and $\tilde {u}_f$ is the front velocity of the approaching gravity currents, and the lifetime of collision can be divided into three phases. During Phase I, $-0.2 \leqslant (\tilde {t}-\tilde {t}_c) \tilde {u}_f/\tilde {H} \leqslant 0.5$, where $\tilde {t}$ is the time, and $\tilde {t}_c$ is the time instance at which the two colliding gravity currents have fully osculated, geometric distortions of the gravity current fronts result in stretching of pre-existing vorticity in the wall-normal direction inside the fronts, and an array of vertical vortices extending throughout the updraught fluid column develop along the interface separating the two colliding gravity currents. The array of vertical vortices is responsible for the mixing between the heavy fluids of the two colliding gravity currents and for the production of turbulent kinetic energy in the collision region. The presence of the top boundary deflects the updraughts into the horizontal direction, and a number of horizontal streamwise vortices are generated close to the top boundary. During Phase II, $0.5 \leqslant (\tilde {t}-\tilde {t}_c) \tilde {u}_f/\tilde {H} \leqslant 1.2$, the horizontal streamwise vortices close to the top boundary induce turbulent buoyancy flux and break up into smaller structures. While the production of turbulent kinetic energy weakens, the rate of transfer of energy to turbulent flow due to turbulent buoyancy flux reaches its maximum and becomes the primary supply in the turbulent kinetic energy in Phase II. During Phase III, $1.2 \leqslant (\tilde {t}-\tilde {t}_c) \tilde {u}_f/\tilde {H} \leqslant 2.8$, the collided fluid slumps away from the collision region, while the production of turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent buoyancy flux and dissipation of energy attenuate. From the point of view of energetics, the production of turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent buoyancy flux transfers energy away from the mean flow to the turbulent flow during the collision. Our study complements previous experimental investigations on the collision of gravity currents in that the flow structures, spatial distribution and temporal evolution of the mean flow and turbulent flow characteristics in the collision region are presented clearly. It is our understanding that such complete information on the energy budgets in the collision region can be difficult to attain in laboratory experiments.

When studying instability of weakly non-parallel flows, it is often desirable to convert temporal growth rates of unstable modes, which can readily be computed, to physically more relevant spatial growth rates. This has been performed using the well-known Gaster's transformation for primary instability and Herbert's transformation for the secondary instability of a saturated primary mode. The issue of temporal–spatial transformation is revisited in the present paper to clarify/rectify the ambiguity/misunderstanding that appears to exist in the literature. A temporal mode and its spatial counterpart may be related by sharing either the real frequency or wavenumber, and the respective transformations between their growth rates are obtained by a simpler consistent derivation than the original one. These transformations, which consist of first- and second-order versions, are valid under conditions less restrictive than those for Gaster's and Herbert's transformations, and reduce to the latter under additional conditions, which are not always satisfied in practice. The transformations are applied to inviscid Rayleigh instability of a mixing layer and a jet, secondary instability of a streaky flow as well as general detuned secondary instability (including subharmonic and fundamental resonances) of primary Mack modes in a supersonic boundary layer. Comparison of the transformed growth rates with the directly calculated spatial growth rates shows that the transformations derived in this paper outperform Gaster's and Herbert's transformations consistently. The first-order transformation is accurate when the growth rates are small or moderate, while the second-order transformations are sufficiently accurate across the entire instability bands, and thus stand as a useful tool for obtaining spatial instability characteristics via temporal stability analysis.

The events following the 15 January 2022 explosions of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano highlighted the need for a better understanding of ocean-atmosphere interactions when large amounts of energy are locally injected into one (or both). Starting from the compressible Euler equations, a two-way coupled (TWC) system is derived governing the long-wave behaviour of the ocean and atmosphere under isentropic constraint. Bathymetry and topography are accounted for along with three-dimensional atmospheric non-uniformities through their depth average over a spherical shell. A linear analysis, yielding two pairs of gravito-acoustic waves, offers explanations for phenomena observed during the Tonga event. A continuous transcritical regime (in terms of water depth) is identified as the source of large wave generation in deep water bodies, removing the singularity-driven Proudman-type resonance observed in one-way coupled models. The refractive properties, governing the interaction of the atmospheric wave with step changes in water depth, are derived to comment on mode-to-mode energy transfer. Two-dimensional global simulations modelling the propagation of the atmospheric wave (under realistic conditions on the day) and its worldwide effect on oceans are presented. Local maxima of water-height disturbance in the farfield from the volcano, linked to the atmospheric wave deformation (in agreement with observations), are identified, emphasising the importance of the TWC model for any daylong predictions. The proposed framework can be extended to include additional layers and physics, e.g. ocean and atmosphere stratification. With the aim of contributing to warning system improvement, the code necessary to simulate the event with the proposed model is made available.

The linear instability of circular vortices over isolated topography in a homogeneous and inviscid fluid is examined for the shallow-water and quasi-geostrophic models in the $f$-plane. The eigenvalue problem associated with azimuthal disturbances is derived for arbitrary axisymmetric topographies, either submarine mountains or valleys. Amended Rayleigh and Fjørtoft theorems with topographic effects are given for barotropic instability, obtaining necessary criteria for instability when the potential vorticity gradient is zero somewhere in the domain. The onset of centrifugal instability is also discussed by deriving the Rayleigh circulation theorem with topography. The barotropic instability theorems are applied to a wide family of nonlinear, quasi-geostrophic solutions of circular vortices over axisymmetric topographic features. Flow instability depends mainly on the vortex/topography configuration, as well as on the vortex size in comparison with the width of the topography. It is found that anticyclones/mountains and cyclones/valleys may be unstable. In contrast, cyclone/mountain and anticyclone/valley configurations are stable. These statements are validated with two numerical methods. First, the generalised eigenvalue problem is solved to obtain the wavenumber of the fastest-growing perturbations. Second, the evolution of the vortices is simulated numerically to detect the development of linear perturbations. The numerical results show that for unstable vortices over narrow topographies, the fastest growth rate corresponds to mode $1$, which subsequently forms asymmetric dipolar structures. Over wide topographies, the fastest perturbations are mainly modes $1$ and $2$, depending on the topographic features.

Biologically inspired finlet treatments have been shown to effectively reduce the trailing-edge noise of a flat plate and hence are a viable noise-suppression technology for engineering applications. The present work performs a thorough experimental investigation on the near-field dynamics of finlet surface treatments applied to a flat plate. To examine the underlying noise-reduction mechanism, the manipulated flow field is analysed using data from detailed static, unsteady wall-pressure as well as velocity measurements and their correlations. Specifically, the densely populated dynamic transducers allow for the tracking of the turbulent boundary-layer development from upstream to the wake of the finlet-treated area (see supplementary movies), which elucidates the formation of ‘finlet-induced turbulence’ through flow–finlet interaction. Associated turbulence structures are found to further develop within the treated area and structures shed from the top of the finlets are observed to mix and merge with the turbulence being channelled through the space between the finlets in the finlet wake. While the mixing process increases the spanwise turbulence length scale, it significantly attenuates the unsteady wall-pressure fluctuation at the trailing edge and thus leads to broadband reduction of the trailing-edge noise. Moreover, it corroborates the findings of earlier studies suggesting that there exists an optimal distance between finlets and trailing-edge where the mixing effects are most beneficial.

We numerically investigate the hydrodynamics of a spherical swimmer carrying a rigid cargo in a Newtonian fluid. This swimmer model, a ‘squirmer’, which is self-propelled by generating tangential surface waves, is simulated by a direct-forcing fictitious domain method (DF-FDM). We consider the effects of swimming Reynolds numbers (Re) (based on the radius and the swimming speed of the squirmers), the assembly models (related to the cargo shapes, the relative distances (ds) and positions between the squirmer and the cargo) on the assembly's locomotion. We find that the ‘pusher-cargo’ (pusher behind the cargo) model swims significantly faster than the remaining three models at the finite Re adopted in this study; the term ‘pusher’ indicates that the object is propelled from the rear, as opposed to ‘puller’, from the front. Both the ‘pusher-cargo’ and ‘cargo-pusher’ (pusher in front of the cargo) assemblies with an oblate cargo swim faster than the corresponding assemblies with a spherical or prolate cargo. In addition, the pusher-cargo model is significantly more efficient than the other models, and a larger ds yields a smaller carrying hydrodynamic efficiency η for the pusher-cargo model, but a greater η for the cargo-pusher model. We also illustrate the assembly swimming stability, finding that the ‘puller-cargo’ (puller behind the cargo) model is stable more than the ‘cargo-puller’ (puller in front of the cargo) model, and the assembly with a larger ds yields more unstable swimming.

The potential of frequency-tuned surfaces as a passive control strategy for reducing drag in wall-bounded turbulent flows is investigated using resolvent analysis. These surfaces are considered to have geometries with impedances that permit transpiration and/or slip at the wall in response to wall pressure and/or shear and are tuned to target the dynamically important structures of wall turbulence. It is shown that wall impedance can suppress the modes resembling the near-wall cycle and the very-large-scale motions and the Reynolds stress contribution of these modes. Suppression of the near-wall cycle requires a more reactive impedance. In addition to these dynamically important modes, the effect of wall impedance across the spectral space is analysed by considering varying mode speeds and wavelengths. It is shown that the materials designed for suppression of the near-wall modes lead to gain reduction over a wide range across the spectral space. Furthermore, a wall with only shear-driven impedance is found to suppress turbulent structures over a wider range in spectral space, leading to an overall turbulent drag reduction. Most importantly, the present analysis shows that the drag-reducing impedance is non-unique and the control performance is not sensitive to variations of the surface impedance within a favourable range. This implies that specific frequency bandwidths can be targeted with periodic material design.

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the stability of a shear-thickening suspension flowing down an inclined plane. In a previous paper (Darbois Texier et al., Commun. Phys., vol. 3, 2020), we have shown that for particle volume fractions $\phi$ above the discontinuous shear-thickening fraction $\phi _{DST}$, long surface waves grow spontaneously at a flow Reynolds number much below 1. This motivated a simplified analysis based on a purely inertialess mechanism, called the ‘Oobleck waves’ mechanism, which couples the negatively sloped rheology of the suspension with the free-surface deflection and captures well the experimental instability threshold and the wave speed, for $\phi >\phi _{DST}$. However, neglecting inertia does not allow us to describe the inertial Kapitza regime observed for $\phi <\phi _{DST}$, nor does it allow us to discriminate between Oobleck waves and other inertial instabilities expected above $\phi _{DST}$. This paper fills this gap by extending our previous analysis, based on a depth-averaged approach and the Wyart–Cates constitutive shear-thickening rheology, to account for inertia. The extended analysis recovers quantitatively the experimental instability threshold in the Kapitza regime, below $\phi _{DST}$, and in the Oobleck waves regime, above $\phi _{DST}$. By providing additional measurements of the wave growth rate and investigating theoretically the effect of a strain delay in the rheology, it also confirms that the instability observed above $\phi _{DST}$ stems from the non-inertial Oobleck wave mechanism, which is specific to free-surface flows and dominates modes of inertial origin. These results emphasize the variety of instability mechanisms for shear-thickening suspensions and might be relevant to free-surface flows of other complex fluids displaying velocity-weakening rheology.

Extensive studies of the hydraulics of pipes have focused on limiting cases, such as fully-developed laminar or turbulent flow through long conduits and the accelerating flow through an orifice, for which there exist laws relating pressure drop and flow rate. We carry out experiments on smooth, circular pipes for dimensions and flow rates that interrogate intermediate conditions between the well-studied limits. Organizing this information in terms of dimensionless friction factor, Reynolds number and pipe aspect ratio yields a surface $f_D(Re,\alpha )$ that is shown to match the three laws associated with developed laminar, developed turbulent, and orifice flows. While each law fails outside its applicable range of $(Re,\alpha )$, we present a hybrid theoretical–empirical model that includes inlet, development and transition effects, and that proves accurate to approximately 10 % over wide ranges of $Re$ and $\alpha$. We also present simple formulas for the boundaries between the three hydraulic regimes, which intersect at a triple point. Measurements show that sipping through a straw is an everyday example of such intermediate conditions not accounted for by existing laws but described accurately by our model. More generally, our findings provide formulas for predicting frictional resistance for intermediate-$Re$ flows through finite-length pipes.

Our focus concerns the turbulent convective flow above a uniformly heated high-aspect-ratio rectangular plate on $z=0$. Prior to this study, classic plume theory could not be applied directly as the Richardson number is ill-defined at the plate. Guided by observation, conservation equations are posed for the near-plate region where the attached buoyant flow is predominantly horizontal. Analytical solutions under the Boussinesq approximation reveal this to be a dynamically invariant region where the attached ‘plumes’ grow linearly toward the plate centreline, their merger forming an ‘apparent’ source for the vertical plume above. Coupling predictions with data from flow visualisation and temperature measurement, we deduce the half-width $0.72b_0$, height ${z=0.46b_0}$ and finite Richardson number $({\sim }18)$ of an apparent source from which plume theory can be applied to model the plume above a heated plate of width $2b_0$. Finally, practical implications of this advancement to the analytical theory of turbulent plumes are noted.

This study conducts direct numerical simulations of free-streaming turbulence passing over individual fixed particles and particle arrays of different number densities. The purpose is to investigate the changes in the mean particle drag due to turbulent environments and the responsible mechanisms. It is confirmed that turbulent environments significantly enhance the particle drag relative to the standard drag in a uniform flow, and the nonlinear dependency of the drag force on the instantaneous incoming flow velocity is insufficient to explain the enhancement. Two mechanisms of particle–turbulence interactions are found to be responsible for the particle drag enhancements. The first mechanism is the enlarged pressure drops on the particle surface, mainly governed by the large scales in turbulent flows. The second mechanism is the increased viscous stresses on the particle surface, dominated by the small scales that enhance the mixing of the low- and high-speed fluids across the particle boundary layer. In terms of quantitative drag enhancement predictions, more general models accounting for the anisotropy of the turbulence are proposed, which fit well with both the simulation data generated in this study and those reported in the literature. Finally, by measuring the drag forces of laminar and turbulent flows passing over arrays of particles, it is found that the overall particle drag increases with decreasing particle–particle relative gap distance. However, the relative enhancement due to turbulence decreases with the particle–particle relative gap distance.

We use small-amplitude inviscid theory to study the swimming performance of a flexible flapping plate with time-varying flexibility. The stiffness of the plate oscillates at twice the frequency of the kinematics in order to maintain a symmetric motion. Plates with constant and time-periodic stiffness are compared over a range of mean plate stiffnesses, oscillating stiffness amplitudes and oscillating stiffness phases for isolated heaving, isolated pitching and combined leading-edge kinematics. We find that there is a profound impact of oscillating stiffness on the thrust, with a lesser impact on propulsive efficiency. Thrust improvements of up to 35 % relative to a constant-stiffness plate are observed. For large enough frequencies and amplitudes of the stiffness oscillation, instabilities emerge. The unstable regions may confer enhanced propulsive performance; this hypothesis must be verified via experiments or nonlinear simulations.

The motion of a finite layer of Bingham material on a solid plate that executes in-plane oscillations was reported previously by Balmforth et al. (J. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech., vol. 158, issue 1–3, 2009, pp. 46–53). There, it was suggested that multiple yielded regions may arise within the material; this contrasts to start-up flow of the same material for which only one yielded region is generated. Here, we explore quantitatively the fluid physics of this oscillatory flow problem through analytical approximations and further numerical computation. Four new key topological properties concerning the generation and termination of the yielded regions are reported. It is shown that the existence of multiple yielded regions is equivalent to the layer never becoming entirely rigid during the periodic motion. For small inertia, the flow is approximately time-reversible with only a single yielded region generated at the plate. For large inertia, shear stress in the material decays rapidly as a function of distance from the plate. A thin zone of yielded material detaches periodically from the plate, and subsequently terminates within the layer. At high oscillation frequency, there can be any number $N$ of distinct rigid regions, satisfying $N= \lfloor 1- {\rm \pi}^{-1} \log B \rfloor$ where $B$ is the Bingham number. It is also shown that for $B>0.5370$, there are at most one yielded region and one rigid region throughout the motion. These theoretical results can be used as a basis for oscillatory rheometry, allowing for measurement of the yield stress using existing apparatus.

A dynamical understanding of the physical process of surface gravity wave breaking remains an unresolved problem in fluid dynamics. Conceptually, breaking can be described by inception and onset, where breaking inception is the initiation of unknown irreversible processes within a wave crest that precede the visible manifestation of breaking onset. In the search for an energetic indicator of breaking inception, we use an ensemble of non-breaking and breaking crests evolving within unsteady wave packets simulated in a numerical wave tank to investigate the evolution of each term in the kinetic energy balance equation. We observe that breaking onset is preceded by around one quarter of a wave period by a rapid increase in the rate of convergence of kinetic energy that triggers an irreversible acceleration of the kinetic energy growth rate. This energetic signature, which is present only for crests that subsequently break, arises when the kinetic energy growth rate exceeds a critical threshold. At this point the additional kinetic energy convergence cannot be offset by converting excess kinetic energy to potential energy or by dissipation through friction. Our results suggest that the ratio of the leading terms of the kinetic energy balance equation at the time of this energetic signature is proportional to the strength of the breaking crest. Hence this energetic inception point both predicts the occurrence of breaking onset and indicates the strength of the breaking event.

A model based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) is designed to reconstruct the three-dimensional turbulent flows beneath a free surface using surface measurements, including the surface elevation and surface velocity. Trained on datasets obtained from the direct numerical simulation of turbulent open-channel flows with a deformable free surface, the proposed model can accurately reconstruct the near-surface flow field and capture the characteristic large-scale flow structures away from the surface. The reconstruction performance of the model, measured by metrics such as the normalised mean squared reconstruction errors and scale-specific errors, is considerably better than that of the traditional linear stochastic estimation (LSE) method. We further analyse the saliency maps of the CNN model and the kernels of the LSE model and obtain insights into how the two models utilise surface features to reconstruct subsurface flows. The importance of different surface variables is analysed based on the saliency map of the CNN, which reveals knowledge about the surface–subsurface relations. The CNN is also shown to have a good generalisation capability with respect to the Froude number if a model trained for a flow with a high Froude number is applied to predict flows with lower Froude numbers. The results presented in this work indicate that the CNN is effective regarding the detection of subsurface flow structures and by interpreting the surface–subsurface relations underlying the reconstruction model, the CNN can be a promising tool for assisting with the physical understanding of free-surface turbulence.

Measurements were made in rough-wall boundary layers subject to favourable, zero and adverse pressure gradients. Profiles of mean velocity and turbulence quantities were acquired and velocity fields were measured in multiple planes to document flow structure. Comparisons were made to equivalent smooth-wall cases with the same free stream velocity distributions. Outer layer similarity was observed between the rough- and smooth-wall cases in all quantities in the favourable and zero pressure gradient regions, but large differences were observed with adverse pressure gradients. In both the smooth- and rough-wall cases, the favourable pressure gradient reduced the turbulence in the boundary layer, and increased the size of turbulence structures relative to the boundary layer thickness in both the streamwise and spanwise directions, while lowering their inclination angle with respect to the wall. When the boundary layer was returned to a zero pressure gradient following the favourable pressure gradient region, the turbulence level and the size and inclination of the structures returned to their canonical zero pressure gradient condition. The response of the boundary layer was somewhat faster in the rough-wall case, causing it to reach equilibrium in a shorter streamwise distance after the changes in pressure gradient than in the smooth-wall case. The adverse pressure gradient increased turbulence levels relative to the wall friction velocity, reduced the size of turbulence structures relative to the boundary layer thickness and increased their inclination angle. The changes with the adverse pressure gradient were significantly larger with the rough wall than the smooth. The results suggest that similarity might be achieved with adverse pressure gradients if smooth- and rough-wall cases with the same Clauser pressure gradient parameter history are compared.

This paper presents an experimental study on how both variable solid volume fractions and aspect ratios (length/width) of a centre-channel rectangular porous patch under aligned configuration of rigid and emergent stems impact the flow behaviour and wake structure. This study forms an essential extension to the existing fundamentals and knowledge on this topic. Through rigorous experimental tests by velocity measurement and dye visualization, the aspect ratio, rarely addressed before, is confirmed to play a critical role. Vortex street, unable to be triggered under a low solid volume fraction, however, can be generated by elongating the patch (increasing the aspect ratio). The key reason is that patch elongation promotes the generation of the wake vortex street by producing a relatively high transverse velocity gradient in the wake region. Meanwhile, Kelvin–Helmholtz vortex streets are triggered along the two patch lateral edges, re-increasing the in-patch velocity and imposing contributions to the wake vortex streets generation. By scaling the characteristic velocity (at the wake vortex initiation position and patch trailing edge) and solid volume fraction with the patch aspect ratio, three non-dimensional threshold maps can be established to express the combined effects of the solid volume fraction and aspect ratio on the initiation of the wake vortex street. They could be alternatively used for theoretical analysis and implementation on wake formation and structure subject to parameter availability.

Experiments on divergent Richtmyer–Meshkov (RM) instability at a heavy gas layer are performed in a specially designed shock tube. A novel soap-film technique is extended to generate gas layers with controllable thicknesses and shapes. An unperturbed gas layer is first examined and its two interfaces are found to move uniformly at the early stage and be decelerated later. A general one-dimensional theory applicable to an arbitrary-thickness layer is established, which gives a good prediction of the layer motion in divergent geometry. Then, six kinds of perturbed SF$_6$ layers with various thicknesses and shapes surrounded by air are examined. At the early stage, the amplitude growths of the inner interface for various-thickness layers collapse quite well and also can be predicted by the Bell model for cylindrical RM instability at a single interface, which indicates a negligible interface coupling effect. Later, a rarefaction wave accelerates the inner interface, causing a dramatic rise in the growth rate. It is found that a thicker gas layer will result in a larger extent that the rarefaction wave can promote the instability growth. A modified Bell model accounting for both Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability and interface stretching caused by a rarefaction wave is established, which well reproduces the quick instability growth. At late stages, reverberating waves inside the layer are negligibly weak such that the inner interface growth is dominated by RM instability and RT stability. The major factors driving the outer interface development are a compression wave and interface coupling. A new interface coupling phenomenon existing uniquely in divergent geometry caused by the gradual thinning of the gas layer is observed and also modelled.

The size distribution of child droplets resulting from a dual-bag fragmentation of a water drop is investigated using shadowgraphy and digital in-line holography techniques. It is observed that parent drop fragmentation contributes to the atomisation of tiny child droplets, whereas core drop disintegration predominantly results in larger fragments. Despite the complexity associated with dual-bag fragmentation, we demonstrate that it exhibits a bi-modal size distribution. In contrast, the single-bag breakup undergoes a tri-modal size distribution. We employ the analytical model developed by Jackiw & Ashgriz (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 940, 2022, A17) for dual-bag fragmentation that convincingly predicts the experimentally observed droplet volume probability density. We also estimate the temporal evolution of child droplet production in order to quantitatively illustrate the decomposition into initial and core breakups. Furthermore, we confirm that the analytical model adequately predicts the droplet size distribution for a range of Weber numbers.
