In this paper, we consider two-dimensional steady free-surface flows where gravity is ignored, but the effects of surface tension are included. It is found that the existence of an additional solid boundary can allow for previously unseen limiting configurations as the surface tension tends to infinity. The free surface of these new solutions is formed of straight lines, arcs of circles and a point where the flow turns at a wall. These limiting configurations form endpoints of solution branches of capillary free-surface flows. Other endpoints of these branches include the surface tension free (i.e. free streamline) solution, and a solution whose free surface is composed simply of a straight line. The model we explore is flow incoming along a channel of constant width. One of the walls terminates, where the fluid is forcibly separated from the wall and a free boundary is formed. The other wall meets a second straight boundary with interior angle $\beta$. Far downstream the solution approaches a uniform stream. Making use of Cauchy's integral formula, the unknowns are expressed in terms of values on the boundary. The integral equations are then solved numerically. The solution space relative to the parameter values of the model is discussed.

We report experimental and theoretical results on how a fluid (homogeneous or continuously stratified) is spun up in a closed, semicircular cylinder. Experiments were performed for Rossby numbers $Ro=0.02$, 0.2 and 1 (the latter corresponding to the limiting case of spin-up from rest), with the Ekman number $E=O({10^{-5}})$, and the Burger number ($S$) varied between 0 and 10. There are two key processes: Ekman pumping that drives the core flow; and the formation and breakdown of the vertical-wall boundary layers, with respective characteristic time scales $t\sim E^{-1/2}$ and $Ro^{-1}$. When these time scales are comparable, the observed flow is dominated by the gradual spin-up of the initial anticyclone that forms when the rotation rate is increased, which fills the container's interior; vorticity generated adjacent to the vertical walls throughout remains confined to the neighbourhood of the container's walls and corners. Conversely, when ${E^{1/2}/Ro\ll 1}$, the vertical-wall boundary layers rapidly break down, resulting in the formation of cyclonic vortices in the container's vertical corners, which grow and interact with the initial anticyclone, leading to the formation of a three-cell flow pattern. For $Ro=0.02$, our theoretical description of the flow generally agrees well with experiments, and the computation of the eruption times for the unsteady boundary layers is consistent with the observations for both $Ro=0.02$ and $Ro=0.2$.

In a previous paper, Oruba et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 818, 2017, pp. 205–240) considered the ‘primary’ quasi-steady geostrophic (QG) motion of a constant density fluid of viscosity $\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}$ that occurs during linear spin-down in a cylindrical container of radius $r^{\dagger }=L$ and height $z^{\dagger }=H$, rotating rapidly (angular velocity $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$) about its axis of symmetry subject to mixed rigid and stress-free boundary conditions for the case $L=H$. Here, Direct numerical simulation at large $L=10H$ and Ekman numbers $E=\unicode[STIX]{x1D708}/H^{2}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$ in the range $=10^{-3}{-}10^{-7}$ reveals inertial wave activity on the spin-down time scale $E^{-1/2}\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}^{-1}$. Our analytic study, based on $E\ll 1$, builds on the results of Greenspan & Howard (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 17, 1963, pp. 385–404) for an infinite plane layer $L\rightarrow \infty$. In addition to QG spin-down, they identify a ‘secondary’ set of quasi-maximum frequency $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}^{\dagger }\rightarrow 2\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$ (MF) inertial waves, which is a manifestation of the transient Ekman layer, decaying algebraically $\propto 1/\surd \,t^{\dagger }$. Here, we acknowledge that the blocking of the meridional parts of both the primary-QG and the secondary-MF spin-down flows by the lateral boundary $r^{\dagger }=L$ provides a trigger for other inertial waves. As we only investigate the response to the primary QG-trigger, we call the model ‘reduced’ and for that only inertial waves with frequencies $\unicode[STIX]{x1D714}^{\dagger }<2\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$ are triggered. We explain the ensuing organised inertial wave structure via an analytic study of the thin disc limit $L\gg H$ restricted to the region $L-r^{\dagger }=O(H)$ far from the axis, where we make a Cartesian approximation of the cylindrical geometry. Other than identifying a small scale fan structure emanating from the corner $[r^{\dagger },z^{\dagger }]=[L,0]$, we show that inertial waves, on the gap length scale $H$, radiated (wave energy flux) away from the outer boundary $r^{\dagger }=L$ (but propagating with a phase velocity towards it) reach a distance determined by the mode with the fastest group velocity.

We present the general analytical solution of the Riemann problem (decay of a jump discontinuity) for non-convex relativistic hydrodynamics. In convex dynamics, an elementary nonlinear wave, i.e. a rarefaction or a shock, originates at the discontinuity and travels towards one of the initial states. Between the left and right waves, an equilibrium state appears represented by a contact discontinuity. The exact solution to the Riemann problem in convex relativistic hydrodynamics was first addressed by Martí & Müller (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 258, 1994, pp. 317–333). In non-convex dynamics, two sequences of elementary nonlinear waves move towards the left and right initial states. Solving the Riemann problem involves determining the types of wave developing and the equilibrium state where they coincide. The procedure consists of constructing the wave curves associated with the nonlinear waves in the pressure–velocity phase space, where the intersection of the wave curves indicates the equilibrium state. We describe the relation between the wave curves, the explicit formulas for their calculation, and the outline of the process for a correct derivation and representation of the waves in the spatial domain. We present examples of the exact solution of a Riemann problem that illustrate the complex phenomena of non-convex dynamics by using the phenomenological non-convex equation of state proposed by Ibáñez et al. (Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc., vol. 476, 2017, pp. 1100–1110).

This paper first uses a low-speed stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) system to measure the convergent statistical quantities of the flow field and then simultaneously measure the time-resolved flow field and the wall mass transfer rate by a high-speed SPIV system and an electrochemical system, respectively. We measure the flow field and wall mass transfer rate under upstream pipe Reynolds numbers between 25 000 and 55 000 at three specific locations behind the orifice plate. Moreover, we apply proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), stochastic estimation and spectral analysis to study the properties of the flow field and the wall mass transfer rate. More importantly, we investigate the large-scale coherent structures’ effects on the wall mass transfer rate. The collapse of the wall mass transfer rates’ spectra by the corresponding time scales at the three specific positions of orifice flow suggest that the physics of low-frequency wall mass transfer rates are probably the same, although the flow fields away from the wall are quite different. Furthermore, the spectra of the velocity reconstructed by the most energetic eigenmodes agree well with the wall mass transfer rate in the low-frequency region, suggesting that the first several energetic eigenmodes capture the flow dynamics relevant to the low-frequency variation of the wall mass transfer. Stochastic estimation results of the velocity field associated with large wall mass transfer rate at all three specific locations further reveal that the most energetic coherent structures are correlated with the wall mass transfer rate.
