Recent theoretical progress using multiscale asymptotic analysis has revealed various possible regimes of stratified turbulence. Notably, buoyancy transport can either be dominated by advection or diffusion, depending on the effective Péclet number of the flow. Two types of asymptotic models have been proposed, which yield measurably different predictions for the characteristic vertical velocity and length scale of the turbulent eddies in both diffusive and non-diffusive regimes. The first, termed a ‘single-scale model’, is designed to describe flow structures having large horizontal and small vertical scales, while the second, termed a ‘multiscale model’, additionally incorporates flow features with small horizontal scales, and reduces to the single-scale model in their absence. By comparing predicted vertical velocity scaling laws with direct numerical simulation data, we show that the multiscale model correctly captures the properties of strongly stratified turbulence within regions dominated by small-scale isotropic motions, whose volume fraction decreases as the stratification increases. Meanwhile its single-scale reduction accurately describes the more orderly, layer-like, quiescent flow outside those regions.

A Lagrangian approach to both hydrostatic non-dispersive in the short-wave range and non-hydrostatic dispersive rotating shallow-water magnetohydrodynamics is developed, and used to analyse weakly and fully nonlinear waves described by the model. Hyperbolic structure in the non-dispersive case is displayed and Riemann invariants are constructed. Characteristic equations are used to establish criteria of breaking and formation of shocks by magneto-gravity waves, and conditions of the appearance of contact discontinuities in Alfvén waves. As in the case of non-magnetic rotating shallow water, rotation cannot prevent breaking. The Lagrangian equations of the model are reduced to a single partial differential ‘master’ equation, which is used to analyse the propagation of weakly nonlinear waves of both families, with or without weak rotation, and with or without weak short-wave dispersion. Corresponding modulation equations are constructed and their main properties sketched. The same master equation is used to obtain fully nonlinear finite-amplitude wave solutions in particular cases of no short-wave dispersion or no rotation.

We present an investigation of the fundamental physical processes involved in deep-water gravity wave breaking. Our motivation is to identify the underlying reason causing the deficiency of the eddy viscosity breaking model (EVBM) in predicting surface elevation for strongly nonlinear waves. Owing to the limitation of experimental methods in the provision of high-resolution flow information, we propose a numerical methodology by developing an EVBM enclosed standalone fully nonlinear quasi-potential (FNP) flow model and a coupled FNP plus Navier–Stokes flow model. The numerical models were firstly verified with a wave train subject to modulational instability, then used to simulate a series of broad-banded focusing wave trains under non-, moderate- and strong-breaking conditions. A systematic analysis was carried out to investigate the discrepancies of numerical solutions produced by the two models in surface elevation and other important physical properties. It is found that EVBM predicts accurately the energy dissipated by breaking and the amplitude spectrum of free waves in terms of magnitude, but fails to capture accurately breaking induced phase shifting. The shift of phase grows with breaking intensity and is especially strong for high-wavenumber components. This is identified as a cause of the upshift of the wave dispersion relation, which increases the frequencies of large-wavenumber components. Such a variation drives large-wavenumber components to propagate at nearly the same speed, which is significantly higher than the linear dispersion levels. This suppresses the instant dispersive spreading of harmonics after the focal point, prolonging the lifespan of focused waves and expanding their propagation space.

Linear stability analyses are performed to investigate the boundary layer instabilities developing in an incompressible flow around the whole leading-edge of swept ONERA-D and Joukowski airfoils of infinite span. The stability analyses conducted in our study are global in the chordwise direction and local in the spanwise direction. A neutral curve is drawn at a given leading-edge Reynolds number $Re_R$ and several overlapping regions, called ‘lobes’, are identified on a physical basis. A detailed study of the marginal modes reveals the presence of attachment-line and cross-flow instabilities, as well as modes whose features do not fall within the standards of a specific type. Connected cross-flow/Tollmien–Schlichting modes, that show a dominant spatial structure reminiscent of Tollmien–Schlichting waves but whose destabilization is linked to a cross-flow mechanism, have been identified. The comparison of several neutral curves at different $Re_R$ values reveals the greater stabilizing effect of the increase of $Re_R$ on the cross-flow instability compared with the attachment-line instability. The influence of the airfoil shape is also studied by comparing the neutral curves of the ONERA-D with the neutral curves of the Joukowski airfoil. These curves reveal similar characteristics with the presence of distinct lobes and their comparison at constant sweep angle shows that, under the conditions studied, the ONERA-D airfoil is more stable than the Joukowski airfoil, even for cross-flow instabilities. The absolutely or convectively unstable nature of the flow in the spanwise direction is also tackled and our results suggest that the flow is only convectively unstable.

A model is formulated of a two-dimensional migrating, or swimming, inviscid bubble in a viscous fluid whose unsteady displacement is caused by the spreading over its surface of an initial distribution of insoluble surfactant. Assuming small capillary and Reynolds numbers, and a linear equation of state giving the surface tension as a function of surfactant concentration, the quasi-steady Stokes flow around the bubble is found analytically and explicit formulas are determined for the time-dependent bubble speed and its final overall displacement. At infinite surface Péclet number this is done using a complex version of the method of characteristics to solve a complex partial differential equation of Burgers type. For a finite non-zero surface Péclet number, the problem is shown to be linearizable by a complex variant of the classical Cole–Hopf transformation. The formulation allows general statements to be made on the bubble speed and its total net displacement in terms of the initial surfactant distribution. A weak finite-time singularity in the surface activity associated with an isolated clean point on the bubble surface is also identified and studied in detail.

A Marangoni surfer is an object embedded in a gas–liquid interface, propelled by gradients in surface tension. We derive an analytical theorem for the lower bound on the viscous dissipation by a Marangoni surfer in the limit of small Reynolds and capillary numbers. The minimum dissipation can be expressed with the reciprocal difference between drag coefficients of two passive bodies of the same shape as the Marangoni surfer, one in a force-free interface and the other in an interface with surface incompressibility. The distribution of surface tension that gives the optimal propulsion is given by the surface tension of the solution for the incompressible surface and the flow is a superposition of both solutions. For a surfer taking the form of a thin circular disk, the minimum dissipation is $16\mu a V^2$, giving a Lighthill efficiency of $1/3$. This places the Marangoni surfers among the hydrodynamically most efficient microswimmers.

Three-dimensional numerical simulations of hypersonic boundary layer transition delay due to porosity representative of carbon-fibre-reinforced carbon-matrix ceramics (C/C) were carried out on a 7$^{\circ {}}$ half-angle cone for unit Reynolds numbers $Re_m=2.43 \times 10^6$–$6.40\times 10^6\ \text {m}^{-1}$, at the free-stream Mach number $M_\infty =7.4$, for both sharp and 2.5 mm nose tip radii. A broadband time-domain impedance boundary condition was used to model the acoustic effects of the porous surface on the flow field. A quasi-spectral sub-filter-scale dynamic closure was adopted to stabilize the computations upon turbulent breakdown under extreme cooling conditions, with wall-to-adiabatic temperature ratio of $T_{w}/ T_{ad} \simeq 0.08 $, while accurately recovering the growth rates of the unstable modes present in the early transition stages. Good agreement is observed with the reference experimental data, both in terms of the predicted extent of the transition delay and the measured second-mode frequency spectrum. The latter is strongly modulated by the formation of near-wall low-temperature three-dimensional streaks. Pressure disturbances concentrate in corridors of locally thickened boundary layer, with frequencies lower than what predicted by linear theory. Here, trapped wavetrains are formed, which can persist long into the turbulent region. Finally, it is shown that the presence of a porous wall simply shifts the onset of turbulence downstream, without affecting its structure.

To get an insight into the dynamics of the oceanic surface boundary layer we develop an asymptotic model of the nonlinear dynamics of linearly decaying three-dimensional long-wave perturbations in weakly stratified boundary-layer flows. Although in nature the free-surface boundary layers in the ocean are often weakly stratified due to solar radiation and air entrainment caused by wave breaking, weak stratification has been invariably ignored. Here, we consider an idealized hydrodynamic model, where finite-amplitude three-dimensional perturbations propagate in a horizontally uniform unidirectional weakly stratified shear flow confined to a boundary layer adjacent to the water surface. Perturbations satisfy the no-stress boundary condition at the surface. They are assumed to be long compared with the boundary-layer thickness. Such perturbations have not been studied even in a linear setting. By exploiting the assumed smallness of nonlinearity, wavenumber, viscosity and the Richardson number, on applying triple-deck asymptotic scheme and multiple-scale expansion, we derive in the distinguished limit a novel essentially two-dimensional nonlinear evolution equation, which is the main result of the work. The equation represents a generalization of the two-dimensional Benjamin–Ono equation modified by the explicit account of viscous effects and new dispersion due to weak stratification. It describes perturbation dependence on horizontal coordinates and time, while its vertical structure, to leading order, is given by an explicit analytical solution of the linear boundary value problem. It shows the principal importance of weak stratification for three-dimensional perturbations.

We examine the gravity-driven flow of a thin film of viscous fluid spreading over a rigid plate that is lubricated by another viscous fluid. We model the flow over such a ‘soft’ substrate by applying the principles of lubrication theory, assuming that vertical shear provides the dominant resistance to the flow. We do so in axisymmetric and two-dimensional geometries in settings in which the flow is self-similar. Different flow regimes arise, depending on the values of four key dimensionless parameters. As the viscosity ratio varies, the behaviour of the intruding layer ranges from that of a thin coating film, which exerts negligible traction on the underlying layer, to a very viscous gravity current spreading over a low-viscosity, near-rigid layer. As the density difference between the two layers approaches zero, the nose of the intruding layer steepens, approaching a shock front in the equal-density limit. We characterise a frontal stress singularity, which forms near the nose of the intruding layer, by performing an asymptotic analysis in a small neighbourhood of the front. We find from our asymptotic analysis that unlike single-layer viscous gravity currents, which exhibit a cube-root frontal singularity, the nose of a viscous gravity current propagating over another viscous fluid instead exhibits a square-root singularity, to leading order. We also find that large differences in the densities between the two fluids give rise to flows similar to that of thin films of a single viscous fluid spreading over a rigid, yet mobile, substrate.

This study comprehensively investigates the response of a combusting droplet during its interaction with a high-speed transient flow imposed by a coaxially propagating blast wave. The blast wave is generated using a specially designed miniature shock generator that produces blast waves using the wire-explosion technique, facilitating a wide range of Mach numbers (1.03 < Ms < 1.8). The experiments are performed in two configurations: open field and focused blast wave. The charging voltage and the configuration determine the Mach number (Ms) and flow characteristics. The flame is found to exhibit two major response patterns: partial extinction followed by reignition and full extinction. Increasing the Mach number (Ms > 1.1) makes the droplet flame more vulnerable to extinction. Additionally, the flame exhibits stretching and shedding, followed by reignition at lower Mach numbers (Ms < 1.06). In all cases, the flame base lifts off in response to the imposed flow, and the advection of the flame base interacting with the flame tip results in flame extinction. The entire interaction occurs in two stages: (i) interaction with the blast wave and the decaying velocity profile associated with it, and (ii) interaction with the induced flow behind the blast wave as a result of the entrainment (delayed response). Alongside the flame's response, the droplet also interacts with the flow imposed by the blast wave, exhibiting different response modes including pure deformation, Rayleigh–Taylor piercing bag breakup and shear-induced stripping.

Saturated flow film boiling on a sphere has been numerically studied in this work for both vertical and horizontal flow configurations. The simulations were performed using a numerical methodology developed by the authors for boiling flows on three-dimensional unstructured meshes. For interface capturing, the coupled level set and volume of fluid method is used. The interface evolution, vapour wake dynamics and heat transfer have been thoroughly investigated by varying the saturated liquid flow velocity, sphere diameter and wall superheat. The relative importance of both the buoyancy and the inertial forces is described in terms of the Froude number $(Fr)$. The vapour bubble evolves periodically at low $Fr$ values, while a stable vapour column develops at high $Fr$ values. The interface evolution pattern obtained in the present work is in good agreement with the results of experimental studies available in the literature. For all the values of $Fr$, a stable vapour column develops for a large-diameter sphere and releases vapour bubbles of varying sizes. Furthermore, for a large-diameter sphere, surface capillary waves are observed at the interface, similar to the observations of some of the experimental studies available in the literature. The flow in the liquid and vapour wakes appears to be strongly coupled. The heat transfer in the present work is estimated using the spatially and temporally averaged Nusselt numbers. Finally, an fast Fourier transform analysis of the space-averaged Nusselt number reveals a strong interaction among the different forces.

This work presents an experimental investigation of the effects of vortex shedding suppression on the properties and recovery of turbulent wakes. Four plates, properly modified so that they produce different vortex shedding strengths, are tested using high speed particle image velocimetry and hot-wire anemometry, and analysed using spectral proper orthogonal decomposition, mean-flow linear stability analysis and various turbulence statistics. When present, vortex shedding is found to exhibit a characteristic frequency that scales with the mean shear, providing a link between the mean flow and the main turbulent motion. To achieve full suppression of shedding, we combine the effects of porosity and fractal perimeter. The mean shear is then decreased to the point where the flow becomes convectively unstable and shedding vanishes. In that case, the onset of self-similarity is delayed, compared with the case with vortex shedding, and appears after another large-scale structure, the secondary vortex street, emerges. It is also found that both large- and small-scale intermittency are starkly reduced when shedding is absent. A simple theoretical representation of the wake dynamics explains the evolution of the wake properties and its connection to the coherent structures in the flow.

The Poiseuille and thermal transpiration flows of a dense gas between two parallel plates are investigated on the basis of the Enskog kinetic equation under the diffuse reflection boundary condition. In contrast to the case of an ideal gas, the density and the gradients of pressure and the normal stress component in the flow direction are not uniform in the direction normal to the plates for a dense gas. The non-uniform normal stress gradient contributes also to the acceleration or deceleration of the thermal transpiration flow for small Knudsen numbers. The profiles of mass and heat flows as well as the net mass flows are obtained for various Knudsen numbers and ratios of the molecular diameter to the distance of plates. In the analysis of the Poiseuille flow, most characteristics of a force-driven flow with a small force are recovered. However, for the case of a dense gas, differences between the force-driven and the present pressure-driven flows are observed even within the linearized regime for small force and pressure gradient, especially at the microscopic level. The behaviour of the velocity distribution functions, in particular, the way in which they approach the ones for the Boltzmann equation as the molecular diameter becomes smaller, is clarified.

Time-varying flow separation on an accelerating prolate spheroid has been studied at various angles of incidence. Instantaneous pressure and scanning stereoscopic particle image velocimetry were used to shed light on the evolution of cross-flow structures for the Reynolds number ($Re$) range of $1.0\times 10^6\leq Re \leq 1.5\times 10^6$. The movement of separation lines is examined for various model accelerations to investigate on the interplay between acceleration and flow separation. The results demonstrate that for axial accelerations, the streamwise pressure distribution in the rear part of the prolate spheroid switches from an adverse to a favourable pressure gradient. At the same time, the circumferential adverse pressure gradient present during steady motion vanishes during said accelerations. In contrast, both streamwise and circumferential adverse pressure gradients strengthen when the model is axially decelerated. These dynamic pressure distributions influence the location of the separation line, which in turn moves closer to the model meridian during accelerations while moving outwards during decelerations. The streamwise vorticity distribution and the streamwise circulation both show how the separation-line position impacts the vortex formation. A high-vorticity region near the model surface is established during acceleration. In contrast, a decelerating model leads to transport of high-vorticity fluid into the outer area of the cross-flow separation. We further assess the memory effects following the near-impulsive velocity changes. The cross-flow retains the memory of moving separation lines shortly after the acceleration. However, the separation recovers quickly to a steady state.

A steady granular flow experiment was performed in a confined annular shear cell to examine how the wall friction coefficient $\mu _w$ degrades from the intrinsic sliding friction coefficient $f$ between the grains and the container wall. Two existing models are invoked to examine the decay trend of $\mu _w/f$ in view of the ratio of shear velocity to the square root of granular temperature $\chi$ (Artoni & Richard, Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 115, 2015, 158001) and the ratio of grain angular and slip velocities $\varOmega$ (Yang & Huang, Granul. Matt., vol. 18, issue 4, 2016, p. 77), respectively. As both models correlate $\mu _w/f$ to different flow properties, a hidden relation is speculated between $\chi$ and $\varOmega$, or equivalently, between the granular temperature and the grain rotation speed. We used experiment data to confirm and reveal this hidden relation. From there, a unified $\mu _w/f-\chi$ model is proposed with physical meanings for the model coefficients and to show general agreement with the measured trend. Hence we may conclude that both the fluctuations in grain translations and their mean rotation are the crucial yet equivalent mechanisms to degrade $\mu _w/f$.

In this paper, direct numerical simulations in hypersonic turbulent boundary layers over a $24^{\circ }$ compression ramp at Mach 6.0 are performed. The wall skin friction and its spanwise non-homogeneity in the interaction region are analysed via the spectral analysis and drag decomposition method. On the compression ramp, the premultiplied spanwise energy spectrum of wall shear stress $\tau _{w}$ reveals two energetic spanwise length scales. One occurs in the region of $x/\delta _{ref}=0\unicode{x2013}3$ ($x=0$ lies in the compression corner; $\delta _{ref}$ is the boundary layer thickness upstream of the interaction region) and is consistent with that of the large-scale streamwise vortices, indicating that the fluctuation intensity of $\tau _{w}$ is associated with the Görtler-type structures. The other one is observed downstream of $x/\delta _{ref}=3.0$ and corresponds to the regenerated elongated streaky structures. The fluctuation intensity of $\tau _{w}$ peaks at $x/\delta _{ref}=3.0$, where both the above energetic length scales are observed. The drag decomposition method proposed by Li et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 875, 2019, pp. 101–123) is extended to include the effects of spanwise non-homogeneity so that it can be used in the interaction region where the mean flow field and the mean skin friction $C_f$ exhibit an obvious spanwise heterogeneity. The results reveal that, in the upstream turbulent boundary layer, the drag contribution arising from the spanwise heterogeneity can be neglected, while this value on the compression ramp is up to 20.7 % of $C_f$, resulting from the Görtler-type vortices. With the aid of the drag decomposition method, it is found that the main flow features that contribute positively to the amplification of $C_f$ and its rapid increase on the compression ramp includes: the density increase across the shock, the high mean shear stress and turbulence amplification around the detached shear layer and the Favre-averaged downward velocity towards the ramp wall. Compared with the spanwise-averaged value, $C_f$ and its components at the spanwise station where the downwash and upwash of the Görtler-type vortices occur reveal a spanwise variation exceeding 10 %.

Spontaneous motion due to symmetry breaking has been predicted theoretically for both active droplets and isotropically active particles in an unbounded fluid domain, provided that their intrinsic Péclet number $Pe$ exceeds a critical value. However, due to their inherently small $Pe$, this phenomenon has yet to be observed experimentally for active particles. In this paper, we demonstrate theoretically that spontaneous motion for an active spherical particle closely fitting in a cylindrical channel is possible at arbitrarily small $Pe$. Scaling arguments in the limit where the dimensionless clearance is $\epsilon \ll 1$ reveal that when $Pe=O(\epsilon ^{1/2})$, the confined particle reaches speeds comparable to those achieved in an unbounded fluid at moderate (supercritical) $Pe$ values. We use matched asymptotic expansions in that distinguished limit, where the fluid domain decomposes into several asymptotic regions: a gap region, where the lubrication approximation applies; particle-scale regions, where the concentration is uniform; and far-field regions, where solute transport is one-dimensional. We derive an asymptotic formula for the particle speed, which is a monotonically decreasing function of $\overline {Pe}=Pe/\epsilon ^{1/2}$ and approaches a finite limit as $\overline {Pe}\searrow 0$. Our results could pave the way for experimental realisations of symmetry-breaking spontaneous motion in active particles.

The feedback between particle-size segregation and rheology in bidisperse granular flows is studied using the Stokes’ problem configuration. A method of lines scheme is implemented to solve the coupled momentum and segregation equations for a normally graded particle size distributed bulk at constant solids volume fraction. The velocity profiles develop quickly into a transient state, decoupled from segregation yet determined by the particle size. From this transient state, the velocity profile changes due to the particles’ relative movement, which redistributes the frictional response, hence its rheology. Additionally, the particles’ relative friction is modified via a frictional coefficient ratio, by analogy with the particles’ size ratio. While positive values of this coefficient exacerbate the nonlinearity of the velocity profiles induced by size differences, negative values dampen this behaviour. The numerical solutions reproduce well the analytical solutions for the velocity profile, which can be obtained from the steady-state conditions of the momentum and segregation equations for the transient and steady states, respectively. Segregation–momentum balances and four characteristic time scales can be established to propose two non-dimensional quantities, including specific Schmidt and Péclet numbers that describe broadly the segregation–rheology feedback. The proposed scheme, theoretical solutions and non-dimensional numbers offer a combined approach to understand segregation and flow dynamics within a granular bulk, extensible across many flow configurations.

A series of laboratory experiments are reported in which a continuous stream of bubbles rise from a small source at the base of a tank of water. Using different nozzles, bubble sizes $d$ ranging from 1.2 to 11.6 mm were produced for a number of gas volume fluxes, $Q_b$, ranging between 1.1 and $21.1\times 10^{-6}\ {\rm m}^3\ {\rm s}^{-1}$. Within a small distance from the source, the slip speed of these bubbles exceeds the speed of the equivalent single-phase plume with the same buoyancy flux, leading to formation of what we refer to as the ‘slip plume’ regime. Through a combination of high-speed photography, coupled with flow visualisation in the plume and the ambient fluid using dye, we find that the bubble speed and the fluid speed remain nearly constant with height, with the maximum fluid speed being of order $0.30\pm 0.03$ of the bubble speed. Using the filling box method, we also find that the net fluid volume flux in the slip plume increases linearly with distance from the source at a rate $Q_l = \lambda Bz/v_s^2$, where $B$ is the buoyancy flux of the gas, $v_s$ the rise speed of the gas bubbles, $z$ the distance above the source and $\lambda$ is a constant related to the dimensionless volume of fluid in the wake of each bubble. This slip-dominated flow regime can be understood in terms of kinetic energy imparted to the fluid as the bubbles rise and release potential energy. Further experiments with particle-laden plumes illustrate similar scalings for the volume flux in a particle-driven slip plume once the slip speed of the particles exceeds the bulk speed of the equivalent single-phase buoyant plume with the same buoyancy flux. Near the source the slip speed may be smaller than the plume speed, and the flow follows the classical model for a turbulent buoyant plume, with the transition to the slip regime occurring at a distance $z^*\approx (32\pm 5)\lambda ^{3/2} B/v_s^3$ from the source, where the dimensionless parameter $\lambda$ relates to the dimensionless volume of the fluid wake, which we find varies with the Reynolds number of the particles.
