Population dynamics of the larvae of Eldana saccharina Walker, Chilo zacconius Bleszynski and Sesamia spp. on sugar-cane was studied over a period of 3 years, by regular sampling. Analysis of results indicated that during the first rainy season (March–June) the borer populations were low. However, the larval population increased considerably during the dry season and declined gradually during the second rainy season (September–November). Rainfall in Southern Ghana is typically bimo-dal, but it is occasionally evenly distributed throughout the year. When rainfall was evenly distributed. borer populations remained consistently low throughout the year. Flooding reduced the population of E. saccharina larvae in the field. Though the stem-borers showed preference for relatively younger canes, the type of borers present and their proportions varied with the sugar-cane phenology.

Aspidiotus destructor Signoret (coconut scale) occurs on bananas in Hawaii, infesting leaves and fruit. Seasonal population fluctuations on two banana varieties and a preliminary sampling plan for management decision making are described. There were distinct seasonal variations in A. destructor numbers on bananas in Hawaii and varietal differences in population densities and proportions of plants infested, with cv. Cavendish incurring highest A. destructor populations. An aggregated dispersion was found for A. destructor. A preliminary sequential sampling plan based on a nominal threshold is provided.

Among the major arthropods in soil and plant samples taken from groundnut farms during the 1996 cropping season in Mali, Burkina-Faso, Niger, and Nigeria, termites in the genus Microtermes (Isoptera: Termitidae) were the most abundant and widely distributed species of economic importance. None of the termite species identified on trees in the surveyed farms attacked groundnuts. At plant maturity, termites were less frequently observed in soils taken from bare ground but were predominantly found on plants. Residues of previous cereal crops in the fields contributed to termite spread. Most of the whitegrub (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and millipede (Myriapoda: Odontopygidae) species identified belonged to the genera of Schyzonycha and Peridontopyge respectively. There was a general decrease in both their population densities and the percentages of farms they infested at plant maturity compared to the early stages of the crop. Mean percentages of plants attacked by termites, whitegrubs and millipedes in the surveyed groundnut fields were 39.4, 10.9, and 9.3% respectively. Yield loss due to termites, which predominantly damaged harvested kernels, was estimated at 9.6–30.4%, and was significantly correlated with percentage of plants damaged by termites (r2 = 0.73).

Several species of Chilo are serious pests of cereal crops. The important species attacking cereals are Chilo agamemnon, C. orichalcociliellus and C. partellus on maize and sorghum; C. auricilius and C. zacconius on sugar-cane, and rice; C. suppressalis on rice; and C. sacchariphagus indicus on sugar-cane. Insects are reared in the laboratory on natural and artificial diets for various purposes, namely for insecticide testing, hormone and pheromone manipulation, biological control, host-plant resistance, etc. Rearing of an insect in the laboratory requires rearing facilities, colony establishment, research and development of rearing techniques, resources, and maintenance of insect quality. All these aspects for rearing major Chilo spp. have been discussed. However, detailed information is available only for C. partellus and C. suppressalis. Techniques used for resistance screening and damage evaluation against spotted stem borer, C. partellus using naturally occurring population and artificial infestation are described.

Diapause in the pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella, is a quantitative genetic character that is in turn regulated by external environmental factors. A naturally occurring non-diapause strain of the insect from south India and two diapause strains from Arizona (U.S.A.) were used in crosses to study the inheritance of diapause. The F progeny expressed a diapause response intermediate between the two parents and no clear dominance was evident for the non-diapause character. It was not possible to classify the phenotypes of backcross and F2 progeny in accordance with simple Mendelian ratios. Comparisons of reciprocal crosses indicated that the progeny from male parents of the Indian strain usually had a lesser incidence of diapause. Such sex related differences were more evident in F2 progeny and backcrosses. It is therefore concluded that diapause in the pink bollworm is inherited in a complex way and that non-diapause is not completely dominant over the diapause trait. The study also indicated that incomplete dominance for non-diapause involves a sex-linked gene.

Oviposition behaviour of the cotton bollworm, Heliothis armigera, and its relation to day-night cycle was examined under laboratory conditions. Eggs were laid both in large quantities of clumped eggs at one place, and singly distributed in the oviposition cage, always glued on the substrate. The maximum individual life time fecundity recorded was 3080, and the highest number of eggs delivered in 1 day was 949. The mean pre-oviposition period was 2.9 days. Peak fecundity occurred between days 5–9 and the highest mating frequency from days 4–6 after emergence. Maximum age for egg laying was 29 days, average life expectancy was 22 days, with longest individual survival of 32 days. Male longevity did not vary from that of females. There was a significant difference in the longevity of mated and virgin females; the mated females lived for a shorter time but produced a significantly higher number of eggs. Also, mating induced a sudden surge in oviposition. Almost 90% of the total eggs were laid in the darkness. Out of them, 60% were from the first and 30% from the second half of the dark period.

Accessions of Vigna vexillata, Vigna oblongifolia, and Vigna unguiculata (subspecies unguiculata, dekindtiana, and pubescens) were evaluated under laboratory conditions to identify sources of seed and/or pod resistance to the cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculates. TVnu 37 and TVnu 88 (V. oblongifolia) and TVnu 72 (V. vexillata) possessed high levels of seed resistance. On mature, dry pods, seventeen-fold differences in mean eggs laid/cm2 were observed, suggesting that ovipositional nonpreference could be a practical form of resistance to C. maculatus. In infested pods, pre-establishment larval mortality (mortality before larvae become established in seeds) varied among accessions, ranging from 19.3% in N1 778 (cv-gr. Biflora) to 91.3% in NI 816 (cv-gr. Textilis). The total percentage larval mortality in infested pods ranged from 34.6% in TN 88–63 (V. unguiculata) to 100% in TVnu 72 (V. vexillata) and NI 816 (cv-gr. Textilis) with the majority of accessions producing over 80% mortality. Higher levels and more durable forms of bruchid resistance might be achieved by combining seed and pod resistance.

The literature published during 1970–1981 on tsetse ecology is reviewed. The geographical distribution of some species was affected during the drought of early 1970s. New maps of tsetse distribution in Africa and a few national maps have been published. The habitats of several species have been described in detail, particularly atypical habitats in peridomestic situations. Pupal ecology has not held the attention of ecologists so much; however, pupal duration and mortality have been assessed for a few species. Due to the importance of selective application of insecticides, resting sites and resting behaviour have been described in detail. Activity patterns have been correlated with climatic factors and also with sampling methods. Several works on host-seeking behaviour, flight performance and energy metabolism have been described. Host preferences of certain species have been found to be somewhat different from those previously recorded; and new host species have been discovered. Studies on fat and haematin content showed that these metabolites are useful indices of nutritional status to interpret feeding behaviour in relation to population sampling. A tsetse contact sex-pheromone has been discovered and synthetised; and attempts have been made to use it in the field. Studies on sound production by both sexes under various conditions of light and physiological state are in progress. Comparative studies on sampling techniques have received particular attention; several trap devices have been designed and tested to evaluate the reliability of samples. The determination of the age structure of populations has become more relevant to studies on population dynamics. Attempts have been made to calculate the growth rate of populations. Density-dependent factors started being taken into consideration in the assessment of populations. Several methods have been tried out to estimate population size. New pathogens, parasites and predators have been recorded.

In Kenya, there are at least seven distinct tick-borne diseases (the ileriosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, heartwater, Nairobi sheep disease, sweating sickness and erhlichiosis in dogs). Theileriosis causes major economic losses arising from deaths of infected cattle.

Control of these diseases is almost exclusively by the application of chemical acaricides to cattle. Use of acaricides is regulated and only those passing field tests are permitted to be marketed in Kenya. Field trials on immunization against East Coast fever (ECF) by infection and treatment are still continuing. Chemotherapy treatment is also available but quite expensive.

The Veterinary Department continuously evaluates acaricides which have been documented to have activity against ticks. These acaricides have been grouped into four groups ranging from organophosphorus compounds in Group I to synthetic pyrethroids in Group IV. To-date Groups III and IV acaricides are kept as reserve, although amitraz in Group III can be used on a limited scale on privately owned farms.

The interactions between the cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora Koch, its parasitoid Lysiphlebus testaceipes Cresson and hyperparasitoid Syrphophagus africanus Gahan were assessed in the laboratory. Host age preference for hyperparasitism was evaluated using parasitized aphids of different ages (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 days old and mixed ages). We studied the influence of the hyperparasitoid on the parasitism efficiency of L. testaceipes, the effect of host age on some biological parameters of S. africanus, and its hyperparasitism based on aggregated or isolated mummies. The presence of S. africanus significantly affected aphid parasitism by L. testaceipes (21.2 ± 3.6 vs 36.6 ± 4.5%). Except for 1-day-old hosts, S. africanus successfully parasitized hosts of all tested ages, with preference for newly formed mummies (39.16 ± 3.31% parasitism in 5-day-old hosts). The development time of immature stages of the S. africanus progeny was significantly affected by host age. The sex ratio of the hyperparasitoid progeny was largely female biased and did not vary with host age. Syrphophagus africanus females from live parasitized aphids produced more offspring (36.55 ± 6.28 vs 25.00 ± 7.16) and lived longer (21.09 ± 1.57 vs 10.88 ± 2.31 days) than those from mummy hosts. Hyperparasitism rates were higher on aggregated mummies than on dispersed ones (36.00 ± 2.86 vs 20.66 ± 4.00%).

Detailed age-specific life table studies were carried out under controlled conditions to measure the effect of temperature, leaf quality ( = age), variety and plant drought stress on net production rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (rm) and generation time (G) of Phenacoccus manihoti Mat.-Ferr. in order to explain changes in population densities observed in the field. The developmental threshold calculated from our data and results published by various authors was 14.7°C. At 35°C all mealybugs died before reaching the adult stage. Mealybugs reared on leaves of different ages showed little differences in rm, and the higher occurrence of P. manihoti on plant tips and oldest leaves could not be explained with better nutritive value of these plant parts alone. Cassava varieties have a strong influence on the intrinsic rate of increase, which could explain differences in results published by other authors. Plant drought stress had little influence on the life table statistics, but rainfall is assumed to be a determinant factor in the dynamics of the mealybug.

Amblyomma hebraeum differs from many ixodid tick species in that it is not susceptible to the direct effects of the host immune response. All stages of the life cycle are able to feed repeatedly on laboratory hosts and show no progressive declines in engorged weight. However, on cattle there are declines in the yield of engorged adult females over time, as animals become sensitized to the tick and grooming increases. In the field zebu, Bos indicus and sanga, B. indicus x B. taurus breeds of cattle become less heavily infested than B. taurus breeds. The apparent resistance of zebu and sanga breeds is the result of learned tick avoidance behaviour, skin sensitivity and the ability to dislodge ticks prior to attachment as well as grooming ability. Among other Amblyomma spp., the feeding of A. americanum is adversely affected by acquired host immunity, while that of A. variegatum is generally unaffected.

To assess the impact of the carpenter bee, Xylocopa olivacea Fabricius 1787, on the pod and seed yields of Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. 1900, in this study, its foraging and pollinating activities were examined in Nkolbisson during two seasons (July 2008–January 2009 and June–December 2009). Observations were made on 180 inflorescences per treatment. The treatments included unlimited floral access to all visitors, bagging of flowers to prevent access to all visitors, and floral access to limited visits by X. olivacea only. In addition, information on all floral visitors was recorded. The carpenter bee's seasonal rhythm of activity, its foraging behaviour on flowers, its pollination efficiency, the fruiting rate (Fr) and the number of seeds per pod were recorded. Nineteen species of insects were recorded visiting the flowers of C. cajan.Chalicodoma cincta cincta was the most prominent one, followed by X. olivacea, Apismellifera adansonii, Megachile bituberculata and Xylocopa albiceps, and the bees were the most frequent floral visitors. Xylocopa olivacea mainly foraged for nectar and pollen and its foraging speed was 11.75 flowers/min. The Fr, the number of seeds/pod and the percentage of normal seeds of unprotected inflorescences were significantly higher than those of inflorescences protected from insects. The foraging activity of X. olivacea resulted in a significant increase in the Fr by 22.26%, as well as the number of seeds/pod by 34.98% and the percentage of normal seeds by 12.09% in the two study years. Placing X. olivacea nests close to C. cajan fields is recommended to increase pod and seed production in Cameroon.

Three gregarious, endoparasitic braconids, a Kenyan strain of Cotesia sesamiae, and the exotic Cotesia flavipes and Cotesia chilonis were imported into Benin as candidates for biological control of stem- and cob borers of maize and stemborers of millet. Host acceptability and host suitability of six gramineous borers occurring in western Africa, the noctuids Sesamia calamistis, Sesamia poephaga, Busseola fusca, the crambid Coniesta ignefusalis, and the pyralids Eldana saccharina and Mussidia nigrivenella, to these parasitoids were evaluated to test the hypothesis that new associations were superior over old association parasitoid–host relationships. All hosts were accepted by all Cotesia spp., except M. nigrivenella, which was not attacked by C. chilonis. Parasitoid progeny developed successfully in S. calamistis, S. poephaga and C. ignefusalis. S. calamistis was the most suitable host in terms of duration of developmental time, brood size and mortality of parasitoid progeny. It was concluded that because of its host specificity, the old association parasitoid C. sesamiae would have the highest chance of establishment in cereal systems in West Africa.

The structure of hildecarpin, an insect antifeedant 6a-hydroxypterocarpan isolated from the roots of Tephrosia hildebrandtii has been confirmed by a combination of degradation reactions, NMR and mass spectra. Hildecarpin has been dehydrated to the corresponding pterocarpene 3-hydroxy-2-methoxy-8,9-methylenedioxypterocarpene. Hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of the pterocarpene has afforded the isoflavan 2′, 7-dihydroxy-6-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyisoflavan, acetylation of which has led to 2′, 7-diacet6xy-6-methoxy-4′,5′-methylenedioxyisoflavan. The NMR and mass spectra of the degradation products confirm the structure previously assigned to hildecarpin.

Light and pheromone traps were compared for their relative efficiecy and importance in monitoring the Heliothis armigera (Hubner) moths at the farm of Rajasthan Agriculture University, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, during the years 1984/85 (4 June 1984 to 3 June 1985) and 1985/86 (4 June 1985 to 3 June 1986). Both kinds of traps showed three periods of moth activity during both the cropping years. Both types of traps showed almost a similar trend in population fluctuation during the cropping years and there were significant positive correlations between light and pheromone trap catches, (r=0.87 for 1984/85 and r=0.93 for 1985/86). However, pheromone traps had many advantages over light trap in monitoring the Heliothis armigera moths.

The distribution and importance of stem-borer species of sorghum in Kenya, viz. Chilo partellus Swinhoe, C. orichalcociliellus Strand, Busseola fusca Fuller, Eldana saccharina Walker and Sesamia calamistis Hampson were studied and discussed. The incidence and period of activity of the stem-borer complex on sorghum indicated that C. partellus, which is a major pest, infested the crop early, while E. saccharina and S. calamistis infested late and persisted in the crop till it was harvested. Preliminary studies on the carryover of stem-borer showed that the larvae of C. partellus and S. calamistis were able to enter diapause in dry sorghum stalks for several months at the end of long and short rain seasons. Some new alternative host plants and parasites and predators affecting different life stages of stem-borers were identified. Preliminary screening of several sorghum lines was carried out for identification and confirmation of resistance to C. partellus and B. fusca, and some sources of resistance were reported.

Several species of stemborers attack sorghum and pearl millet in Africa and Asia. The commonest species on sorghum are Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) and Busseola fusca (Fuller) and on pearl millet, Contesta ignefusalis (Hampson). This paper discusses control options and the extent to which farmer perceptions of stemborers and associated crop losses have been considered. Examples of research aimed at developing IPM strategies are presented in the context of their impact or lack of it, on the farming community. Research efforts have traditionally focused on the development of resistant cultivare and only recently are they being targeted towards a combination with cultural and biological tactics. Conventional breeding procedures have not produced adequate levels of resistance to stemborers and natural enemies are not effective in regulating borer populations. The prospects of applied biological control and improved intercropping configurations are discussed. Reference is also made to progress in the role of semiochemicals in parasitoid activity on Ch. partellus and sex pheromones in the control of Con. ignefusalis. Unless resistance levels to stemborers are increased through biotechnological approaches, optimisation of the yield potential in existing cultivars requires that IPM research should focus on the improvement of cultural and biological components and should incorporate farmers' perceptions and an assessment of traditional pest management practices.

The habitat preferences and activity patterns of Glossina swynnertoni Austen were studied using Siamese traps, electrified screens and vehicle patrols in Aitong, southwestern Kenya in three habitats: large thicket, wooded grassland and an Acacia community. Except in the Acacia community, G. swynnertoni occurred in association with Glossina pallidipes Austen. Apparent density varied significantly among the three habitats, being highest in the Acacia community, intermediate in wooded grassland and lowest in large thickets. Density also varied seasonally, with higher densities occurring in the rainy season than in the dry season in all three areas. Vehicle patrol was a more effective and rapid method for sampling G. swynnertoni than either Siamese traps or electrified screens. However, vehicle patrol catches were strongly biased in favour of males (4:1). Diurnal activity in the Acacia community was unimodal for both sexes, with peaks of activity occurring at 1100–1200 h for males and at 1400–1500 h for females. Both sexes remained active in the afternoon but activity declined rapidly towards dusk (1700–1800 h).

Competition between Dermestes maculatus Degeer (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) and Necrobia rufipes Degeer (Coleoptera: Cleridae) in Clarias gariepinus (Burchell), was studied at four population levels (16,30,48 and 60), three moisture-content levels (12,15 and 20%) and three temperatures (20, 27 and 32°C). Experiments were carried out using adult insects of both species in mixtures of equal and unequal numbers. Interspecific competition between N. rufipes and D. maculatus was found to have an effect on the population growth of both beetles but to different extents. The intensity of competition is dependent on temperature, moisture content and the initial density ratio. Using the replacement series approach, it was predicted that at high adult population and moisture content, N. rufipes becomes extinct and D. maculatus dominates a mixed culture. At a temperature of 20°C, D. maculatus outcompetes N. rufipes while at 32°C, both species co-exist. This observation possibly accounts for the low occurrence or absence of N. rufipes relative to D. maculatus in commercial dried fish in areas with temperatures of 20 to 30°C.
