From 2002 to 2004, three field trials were conducted in Senegal to compare the efficacy of a new biopesticide for grasshopper control, based on the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum Driver & Milner, with mixtures of this biopesticide and cyhalothrin, a widely used pyrethroid insecticide to control the Senegalese grasshopper Oedaleus senegalensis Krauss. The aim of these trials was to obtain a knockdown effect without compromising the environmental credentials of the biopesticide too much. During the first two trials, 50 ha (2002) and 25 ha (2003) plots were treated with Metarhizium at a rate of 50 g/ha, cyhalothrin at a rate of 40 g/ha, a mixture of Metarhizium at a rate of 25 g/ha and cyhalothrin at a rate of 20 g/ha. For the third trial in 2004, several mixtures of cyhalothrin at a rate of 10 g/ha and Metarhizium at dose rates of 6.25, 12.5 and 25 g/ha were prepared. These mixtures were compared with 50 g/ha of Metarhizium, 40 g/ha of cyhalothrin and 10 g/ha of cyhalothrin on 25 ha experimental plots. The volume application rate for all trials was 1 l/ha. The Metarhizium applications resulted in a slow but long-lasting reduction of grasshopper numbers. By contrast, cyhalothrin produced a rapid reduction, but grasshopper numbers re-increased a few days after application, except in 2003, when grasshopper densities in the surrounding areas were low. The mixtures caused a similarly fast reduction in grasshopper numbers, but this lasted throughout the 3 week post-application assessment period. These trials demonstrated that adding a low dose of a pyrethroid insecticide to a slow-acting biopesticide can increase the speed of population reduction, while retaining the latter's long-lasting effect. A bonus is that the price of the combination is lower than that of each product at the recommended dose rates. Since the insecticide is added at a low dose, its environmental impact is reduced compared with the full-dose insecticide only treatment.

The hormetic influence on silkworm, Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) of the juvenile hormone mimic ω-formyl longifolene oxime propargyl ether (NL13) was assayed. Emulsions containing 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 ppm of the compound were administered topically as a single dose, to two popular commercial silkworm hybrids, viz. KA × NB4D2 and PM × NB4D2, at 24,48, 72 and 96 h into the 5th instar, and economic characters of the larvae and resultant cocoons measured. A medium and absolute control were maintained in parallel. It was found that administration of 5 ppm of NL13 to 48-h-old 5th instars resulted in the maximum improvement in commercial traits. The possible role of exogenous JH-like compounds in eliciting this response in silkworm is discussed.

The biology of the aphid, Cerataphis variabilis H.R.L., on Raphia hookeri Mann & Wendl., was studied in the laboratory and the field using a ‘clip-on’ cage and a sleeve cage. The first instar lasted 5.1 days. The second and third instars each lasted 2.45 days, while the fourth instar lasted 2.4 days. The total developmental period of the nymphs was 11.3 days at 26.4 ± 1.43°C and r.h. 83 ± 1.46%; 11.6 days at 26.4 ± 1.63°C and r.h. 85 ± 1.19%; 12.9 days at 27.9 ± 1.04°C and r.h. 75.5 ± 1.64%; 12.95 days at 27.8 ± 0.33°C and r.h. 69 ± 1.23%; 15 days at 21.4 ± 0.58°C and r.h. 45 ± 1.77%. These periods were significantly different at 5% level (LSD = 0.59 days). The higher the temperature and relative humidity the shorter the developmental period (with temperature: r = −0.69, 20.8–28.9°C; r.h.: r = −0.97, 43.2–86.2%). The number of progeny per adult ranged from 54 to 60 in a period of 28–31 days. The longevity ranged from 31 to 34 days.

Studies were conducted to determine the effect of temperature and diet on the development of Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) and Chilo orichalcociliellus (Strand) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). Developmental times of C. partellus and C. orichalcociliellus for the egg, larval and egg-adult life stages were inversely related to temperature. The larval developmental period of C. orichalcociliellus reared on artificial diet was longer than the developmental period on natural diet. Chilo partellus had a higher intrinsic rate of natural increase than C. orichalcociliellus at all diet/temperature combinations except natural diet at 31°C.

Incorporated in this paper were the results of a study made on the quantitative variation of total carbohydrate, protein and lipid in whole body, fat body and integument of the larval and pupal developmental stages in rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica (St.) a storage grain pest. All three macromolecules referred to in case of whole body, exhibited a progressively decreasing trend from larva to pupa. In fat body total carbohydrate and protein contents were more in pupa than larva, while in integument the said nutrients were less in pupa than larva, showing the reverse results. The lowering down of the nutrients' level under stress caused by pyrethrum (a botanical insecticide) was also observed. The physiological and statistical significance of these findings was discussed.

As an important measure for increasing grain production, hybrid sorghum has been cultivated in the whole area of the Peoples Republic of China since 1970. Over the past 10 years the sorghum shootfly has gradually become the worst pest of sorghum in several places in the southern parts of China. In 1973, some regions of Gung Dong, Gui Chou and Gung Xi Provinces were affected by the shootfly with a rate of 30% for the heavier damage, and a few even exceeding 90%.

Efficacy of olfactory attractants incorporated in biconical traps to enhance the catch size of Glossina pallidipes Austen was investigated. Preliminary studies considered the effectiveness of a mixture of waste products from buffalo (Syncerus caffer) and that of warthog (Phacochoerus aethiopicus). The results were compared with the known tsetse olfactory attractants, carbon dioxide and acetone. When the waste product components from buffalo were used in the traps separately, buffalo urine was found to be by far the most effective. This component, used in its natural state inside the trap, increased G. pallidipes catches almost 10-fold when compared with the control catch.

Essential oil of sweetflag, Acorus calamus L. was fed (in artificial diet) to the variegated cutworm, Peridromo soucia Hubner, to assess its antifeedant and growth inhibitory effects. The oil decreased food consumption and larval growth in a dose-dependent manner in both neonate (first instar) and second instar larvae. Calamus oil applied to cabbage leaf discs significantly inhibited feeding by fourth and fifth instar larvae in a choice test. Nutritional experiments with fourth instar larvae using topical application or dietary exposure confirmed that sweetflag oil induces both antifeedant and growth inhibitory effects in Peridroma saucia, the latter possibly being independent of feeding behaviour.

Thirty-five grain sorghum genotypes representing 6 variable groups (A/B-lines, R-lines, commercial varieties, germplasms, mutants and locals) were evaluated for the orientation, colonisation and oviposition responses of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), governing the antixenosis component of resistance. In free-choice tests, the orientation and colonisation responses of the weevil were identical among all the genotypes at 24 h, varied at 48 h, and differed widely by 72 h after adult release. High degrees of antixenosis for colonisation by the adult weevils were observed among all the genotypes except 2077A and 2219B, which suggests a predominant reaction to gustatory rather than visual or olfactory stimuli. One to five egg plugs per seed were oviposited, frequently near the endosperm close to the seed base. Greater levels of antixenosis for oviposition were noticed in 2077B, DJ 6514 and IS 11758 in free-choice tests, and 2219B, M 148–138, P 721 and Nizamabad (M) in no-choice tests. To the contrary, M 35–1, Swati and Lakadi showed greater susceptibility for oviposition. Significantly less damage to seed was observed on 2219A/B, 116B, IS 9487, IS 11758, CSV 8R(M) and Local Yellow. Although the differences in seed weight loss were not significant, this parameter was relatively lower in AKMS 14B and 2219B than in the other genotypes. This indicates the need to increase the levels of resistance among the parental A/B-lines in the development of hybrids, in order to ensure better protection from rice weevil infestation in stored sorghum.

Grass pea Lathyrus sativus L. plays a major role in the nutrition of many poor people in Ethiopia. However, the crop suffers heavy damage by pea aphids Acyrthosiphon pisum (Hemiptera: Aphididae). To test potentially more sustainable and harmless alternatives to the commonly used insecticides, some botanicals (neem, garlic and hot pepper), soap, kerosene and the aphicide pirimicarb, were tested for their efficacy against A. pisum at Wondata village, close to the town of Bahir Dar, in northwestern Ethiopia, from 1999 to 2002. After pirimicarb, hot pepper was consistently the most effective botanical in controlling the pea aphid in terms of both pea aphid population as well as grain yield. Compared to the untreated control, there was up to 83 and 55% lower aphid population on pirimicarb- and hot pepper-treated plots in the 2000/2001 cropping season, respectively. There was also up to 93 and 54% higher grain yield on plots treated with pirimicarb and hot pepper extract, respectively. Soap was less effective, while kerosene caused phytotoxicity. Infestation levels increased with advancing maturity of the crop, rising exceptionally suddenly and dramatically near crop maturity. Combined ANOVA over years and crop growth stages indicated that aphid populations varied with years and growth stages. In 2001/2002, aphid populations were higher and grain yields were lower compared with the other years. Percentage parasitism of aphids was significantly higher on pirimicarb-treated plots (∼40%) than other treatments (<20%). Parasitism was essentially a late-season occurrence. Predator population, especially of ladybird beetles (Adonia spp.), was especially higher on hot pepper- and garlic-treated plots, and lowest on pirimicarb treated plots. Grain yield was positively correlated with level of aphid parasitism, ladybird beetle population and number of pods per plant, and strongly negatively correlated with aphid population. In conclusion, a fresh extract of hot pepper sprayed at the rate of 70 ml/4 m2 was selected for further research on rate, frequency and cost of application.

Rice germplasm comprising 66 lines/varieties was evaluated under field conditions for two wet seasons against a yellow stemborer, leaffolder and whitebacked planthopper (WBPH) at the vegetative and panicle initiation crop stages. Glasshouse screening of germplasm for WBPH resistance was done at the seedling stage. At the vegetative stage, over the 2 years, 18 lines/varieties showed leaffolder damage from 6.21 ± 0.33 to 9.99 ± 4.07%, while at the panicle initiation stage, six lines/varieties showed damage from 8.77 ± 1.25 to 12.25 ± 4.67%. A highly significant correlation between flag leaf width and per cent infested leaves at the vegetative (r = 0.88) and panicle initiation (r = 0.79) stages was recorded. No significant correlation was observed between plant height and leaffolder infestation at the vegetative stage; however, it was significant at the panicle initiation stage (r = 0.37). The dead heart (DH) damage at the vegetative stage over the years was less than 1% in six lines/varieties, while at the panicle initiation stage, seven lines/varieties showed whitehead (WH) damage ranging from 1.29 to 1.92%. A highly significant correlation was observed between plant height and per cent DH and WH at the vegetative (r = 0.73) and panicle initiation stages (r = 0.81). Such a relationship was not observed between leaf width and stemborer infestation at both stages. Two lines, viz. IR 59 547-235-3-3 and SPR 85 163-5-1-2-4, were resistant to the WBPH under glasshouse screening, whereas 20 lines were moderately resistant and the remaining lines were susceptible.

Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), commonly known as the cowpea seed beetle, is the most important pest of stored cowpea in tropical Africa. In rural area where preservation techniques and facilities are limited, it causes post-harvest weight and quality losses. The importance of damages which can reach 100% in a few months justifies the development of effective and appropriate control methods in the villages. All these control methods and their applications are discussed in this paper. Chemical control is inappropriate at farm level, because of its cost and hazards. The many studies conducted on varietal resistance have enabled identification of varieties that are more or less resistant to this pest; however, the varieties are often of little interest from the agronomic point of view. The incorporation of that resistance in cultivated varieties is in progress. The physical control methods are inadequate because their application requires equipment and technical knowledge which are not found in rural areas. Biological control is an attractive alternative but is still at an experimental stage. All these limitations support promotion of traditional control methods. Among them, the use of inert substances as well as indigenous plants or their by-products have given, in many cases, a satisfactory control of C. maculatus.

Termite workers, Macrotermes subhyalinus (Rambur), produced two cellulase-free xylanases, namely Xyl A and Xyl B. DEAE-Sepharose CL-6B, Sephacryl S-200 HR, CM-Sepharose CL-6B and Phenyl-Sepharose CL-4B chromatographies purified these enzymes. They exhibited molecular masses of 63–66.1 (Xyl A) and 60.7–62.4 (Xyl B) kDa. Both enzymes appeared to be endo-xylanases, which produced oligomers of xylose from xylan and did not hydrolyse them to xylose. They had different optimum pH (pH 4.6–5.0 for Xyl A and pH 5.0 for Xyl B) and different optimum temperatures (60 °C for Xyl A and 55 °C for Xyl B). However, they had the same pH stability (4.0–5.6). Both enzymes were stable at 50 °C for more than 4 h. At a pH ranging from 4.6–5.0 and 60 °C, Xyl A and Xyl B possessed the half-life of 115 and 60 min, respectively. The xylanase activities were stimulated by Na+, Mn2+ and dithiol-reducing agents and were sensitive to Cu2+ and detergent agents. Their enzymatic activity was slightly reduced by the presence of urea at 1% (w/v) concentration. The two enzymes could be used in the presence of organic solvents such as acetone (up to 10% v/v) without loss of activity.

This paper briefly discusses insect pest responses in mixed crop stands, their peculiarities and possible crop protection advantages. Results on the effects of a bean–oat diculture on the movements and feeding activity of the adult pea leaf weevil, Sitona lineatus L. are presented and discussed. Mixtures of these crops were found to significantly reduce the amount of notching of the bean leaflets by the weevil and weevil relative populations are compared to the sole bean crops, and to increase emigration from the more diverse plots.

Genetic analyses were carried out to determine inheritance of resistance, heterotic effects and reciprocal effects for resistance to the spotted stem borer, Chilo partellus in three maize crosses. Resistance was found dominant over susceptibility. Highly significant heterosis was detected for percentage dead hearts. Both additive and nonadditive gene effects were important in the inheritance of resistance to C. partellus in all crosses. Additive gene effects were highly significant for all the three resistance parameters: leaf-feeding, dead hearts and stem tunnelling. However, a high magnitude of nonadditive (dominance and epistatic) gene effects were detected for dead hearts. No cytoplasmic effects were detected in reciprocal crosses between resistant and susceptible maize lines, suggesting that the resistance to C. partellus is conferred only by nuclear genes. Recurrent selection methods should be used to accumulate alleles for resistance. Resistant F1 hybrids could be developed between resistant and susceptible lines in reciprocal combinations.

In choice tests with well-established natural trails and glandular extract trails, allopatric populations of Trinervitermes bettonianus Sjöst followed alien colonies' trails with the same degree of motivation as their own trails. The five Trinervitermes spp. tested readily followed each other's trail. Chromatographs of natural trail extracts showed that the main component of the T. bettonianus trail pheromone also occurs in trails of T. gratiosus (and presumably in the other species); this would account for the observed cross-following of trails among these species.

In southern Asia, Chilo auricilius Dudgeon, Chilo infuscatellus Snellen, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), Chilo polychrysus (Meyrick), Chilo suppressalis (Walker), Chilo suppressalis simplex (Butler), Chilo sacchariphagus indicus (Kapur), Chilo supermain and Chilo tumidicostalis Hampson are recorded as pests of cereal crops. Chilo partellus causes severe losses in maize, sorghum and rice; Chilo suppressalis, Chilo polychrysus and Chilo supermain are major pests of rice; Chilo auricilius causes damage on both rice and sugar-cane; and Chilo infuscatellus and Chilo sacchariphagus indicus are serious pests of sugar-cane. Chilo suppressalis simplex and Chilo tumidicostalis are minor pests of maize and sugar-cane, respectively. Some of these pyralid borers are minor pests of other cereal crops. The life and seasonal histories of these stem borers and various control measures against them practised in various countries of southern Asia are discussed. The natural enemies of various Chilo species in this region are also listed.

Investigations into the vectorial capacity of wild caught Phlebotomus pedifer by feeding them on volunteer patients were carried out inside one of the caves of Mt Elgon. Female P. pedifer were fed on lesions of cutaneous leishmaniasis patients to determine the route of infection and infection rates in the flies and hence their vectorial capacity. The flies were kept for periods of 3–8 and 9–13 days before dissections were carried out. The results indicate that the longer period (9–13 days) yielded a higher infection rate. All parasite isolations from flies which were injected subcutaneously caused cutaneous lesions in the nose of the experimental hamsters. All infections were concentrated in the anterior stations of the gut of the experimental sandfly species P. pedifer.

The effects of temperature on the life history of Spilostethus pandurus (Scopoli) were examined by determining the different developmental and reproductive parameters with respect to days of hatching, oviposition, and adult emergence of insects reared in field cages at Giza, Egypt. Hatching, oviposition, and adult emergence continued all year round; the average daily temperature in the coldest month (January) seemed to be above developmental thresholds for different stages. This lygaeid completed six overlapping generations in 1 year. The basic population parameters, i.e. net reproductive rate (R0), gross reproductive rate (GRR), instantaneous rate of natural increase (r), finite rate of natural increase (λ), and mean generation time (T) exhibited a more or less cyclic pattern in successive generations. The highest value of r (rmax) was considered as the intrinsic rate of natural increase of this species.
