This paper furnishes a compact modified hourglass-shaped aperture-coupled antenna for radar applications. The effect of slots of various shapes and various slot lengths on the input impedance, radiation pattern, and gain of the antenna are analyzed. The proposed antenna, designed using a modified hourglass-shaped aperture, offers a gain of 8.214 dBi for an compact antenna with a dimension of 20.4 × 20.4 × 1.041 mm3 and an aperture area of 2.495 mm2. Implementation of this proposed modified hourglass-shaped aperture offers a high gain per unit radiating patch area of 40.26 dB/$\lambda _g ^2$ and a high gain per unit aperture area of 1324.84 dB/$\lambda _g ^2$. The proposed aperture feeds a circular patch which radiates at its resonant frequency of 10.5 GHz. The proposed design is fabricated and the simulated results are verified experimentally. Equivalent circuit analysis is also done. A measured gain of 7.2 dBi is observed at 10.5 GHz. The physical area of the antenna is reduced without compromising the gain by judiciously choosing the shape of slot with more degree of freedom for impedance matching. The proposed antenna is well suited for the unit cell of phased array antennas for X-band missile radar applications.

Ultra wideband (UWB) wireless systems are highly susceptible to interference from other services. To reduce the effect of interference from co-existing sources such as the WLAN standard IEEE 802.11a on UWB Communication, the construction of a modified template waveform using multi-carrier sinusoids is proposed in Ohno and Ikegami (2003), Ohno et al. (2004), Ohno and Ikegami (2006), and Lakshmanan and Nikookar (2007). However, the work in Ohno and Ikegami (2003), Ohno et al. (2004), Ohno and Ikegami (2006), and Lakshmanan and Nikookar (2007) considers a free space propagation channel model with no treatment of the frequency dependence of the path loss. In this paper, we broaden the study by taking into consideration a frequency-dependent path loss environment. The novelty of the work is in the investigation of the effect of frequency dependency of the path loss on the performance of interference mitigation schemes.

In this paper, we present a near-field microwave microscopy method for the characterization of dielectric materials samples in the Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band. The system proposed is composed of a probe coupled to a dielectric resonator (DR) operating in the TE011 mode. Latter this is used to fix the resonance frequency of the resonator at 2.45 GHz. This system is used for the characterization of dielectric samples with accuracy and high spatial resolution, knowing that they do not have predetermined forms, but a small plane surface.The same device is used for a multi-frequency characterization (4–20 GHz) using resonance frequencies of the cavity instead of one resonance frequency of the DR.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for obtaining wideband spectral information of the target in microwave imaging systems by using broadband frequency reconfigurable printed transceivers. The proposed transceiver is composed of two embedded stacked microstrip antenna configurations operating in C-band (5.5–8.5 GHz) and X-band (8.5–11.5 GHz) with each having 3 GHz bandwidth. The transceiver switches between the two configurations (and thus frequency bands) using PIN diodes and collects response of the antenna in the presence of the target, in both the operating bands. This information is then combined to obtain wideband spectral information of the target from 5.5 to 11.5 GHz to achieve improved image reconstruction. The proposed reconfigurable transceiver has advantage over traditional broadband transceivers (those have slots/meandering at ground plane to achieve wideband response) that it has unidirectional radiation patterns throughout its band of operation. Hence the imaging system is implemented without the absorbers. This keeps the system compact and inconspicuous when installed for security applications. Here, a bistatic system is employed with two-dimensional target scanning performed in a real outdoor environment.

One of the current trends in the integrated circuit (IC) development is the integration of antennas on-chip or in the package of the IC. This poses challenges in the production testing process of the packaged IC, as the antenna functionality has to be included and at least one of the signal ports cannot be accessed at a conducted manner. In order to measure the reflection coefficient of an integrated antenna, a contactless characterization method (CCM) can be used. In this paper, the practicality of a CCM is assessed, having the application of a cost-effective high-volume testing procedure for integrated antennas in mind. It is shown that the CCM yields accurate results for different imperfections in the measurement setup. Moreover, measurement results around 33 GHz using a connectorized patch antenna are shown, which experimentally verify the validity of using the CCM under near-field conditions.

A small and compact ultra-wideband (UWB) aperture antenna with extended band-notched design is proposed. The antenna is composed of a rectangular aperture on ground plane of a printed circuit board and a fork-like exciting stub. The presented co-planar wave guide triple-fed antenna is easy to be applied with RF and microwave circuitry for low manufacturing cost. The antenna is successfully designed, implemented, and measured. A compact aperture area of 12.5 × 23 mm2 is acquired with promising performances, including broadband matched impedance and stable radiation patterns. The correlation between the mode-based field distributions and radiation patterns is discussed. Extended from the proposed antenna, one advanced band-notched (5–6 GHz) designs are also presented as a desirable feature for UWB applications.

A broadband linear polarized antenna is designed for radio frequency energy harvesting. The antenna covers the frequency range from 1 up to 6 GHz with relative impedance bandwidth of 126% at −6 dB reflection coefficient |S11| and extended from 1.1 to 3.3 GHz and from 4.2 to 5.6 GHz at |S11| ≤ −10 dB. A 2 × 2 dual linear polarized (DLP) antenna array is designed based on the antenna element by using equal phase and equal power divider 1-to-4 Wilkinson power divider with 180° phase shifter. The DLP antenna array covers the frequency band from 1.8 to 2.9 GHz. This frequency band covers a wide range of modern wireless communication standards, including GSM 1800, UMTS 2100, Wi-Fi 2.4, and most of LTE bands. The developed array prototype was then used to experimentally validate the simulation results. The horizontally and vertically polarized gain of the designed array were found to be quite similar across the 1.8–2.9 frequency band with an average gain value of 5.5 dBi.

This paper details the design and development of a planar switched beam network using 4 × 4 Butler matrix (BM) over a thin and flexible type biocompatible substrate. Four mils thick liquid crystal polymer (LCP) is used as a substrate here (ϵr = 2.92, tanδ = 0.002). The proposed design is centered at 28 GHz, targeting commercial millimeter-wave applications. Floral-shaped antenna with defective ground structures has been implemented as basic radiating elements. The whole structure is based on microstrip line configuration. The architecture occupies an area of 23.85 × 19.20 mm2 over the LCP substrate. Individual components of the BM are detailed here, followed by a system analysis of the whole integrated structure. The present work also covers the electrical equivalent circuit modeling of the whole beam-forming network. The fabricated prototype offers better than 18 dB return losses at each input port for the desired frequency band with 6 dBi (max.) peak gain and 500 MHz bandwidth around the center frequency. Port-to-port isolation of better than 15 dB is achieved with this topology. Experimental and simulated results are in good agreement in all aspects. A comparative study is also chalked out to highlight the significance of the current research work with respect to alike earlier reported structures.

A novel reconfigurable circular microstrip G-slotted antenna having a circularly defected ground structure (DGS) capable of switching its resonance frequency for several microwave applications is presented in this paper. Reconfigurability of the proposed G-slot antenna is obtained by incorporating three PIN diodes. One diode is embedded in the patch and two diodes are integrated into the DGS structure at appropriate places in the slot to achieve four different wireless applications such as aeronautical radio navigation (4.3 GHz with gain 3.6 dB), satellite communication (3.78 GHz with gain 3.7 dB), mobile communication (4.55 GHz with gain 4.0 dB), and WiMAX (3.35 GHz with gain 3.3 dB). These four bands are achieved depending on the different biasing conditions of the three PIN switches used. Antenna performance has been analyzed in ANSYS Electronics Desktop 2018.2 software. The equivalent circuit component of the switching element (PIN diode) has been considered and designed during the simulation. The creative structure lies in the way that it exhibits higher gain with compact size than the previously reported similar antenna. A prototype of the proposed patch antenna has been fabricated on a Roger substrate and its testing and measurement have been performed to demonstrate its desirable characteristics and features.

Structures of tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) of the circular cross-section of 50 and 200 nm and length up to 1 mm form a communication system between cells. While transport of material such as endocytic vesicles, mitochondria, proteins, cytoplasmic molecules, etc., is experimentally proven, a possible transfer of electric and electromagnetic energy across TNTs corresponding to electrotechnical processes of excitation, propagation, and amplification in cavity systems is yet in a beginning stage of research. The ideas presented in this paper are based on technical mechanisms applied to submicroscopic systems. Main features of corrugated periodic structures, electromagnetic circular waveguides, the Manley–Rowe amplification, the Fröhlich non-linear interaction of coherent electric polar vibrations, and description of cut-off frequency propagating limits in the waveguide and cavities and along periodic structures are discussed. We suggest that cell-to-cell connection with TNTs may form a unified coherent cavity system which enables simultaneity and mutual cooperation in multicellular organisms.

Coupled-mode theory is applied to obtain an analytic form of scattering parameters for a class of transmission line metamaterials with antisymmetric split-rings. The same structure is modeled with equivalent circuit, which includes electric and magnetic coupling with the line and inter-resonator coupling. Modified even/odd analysis is used to obtain scattering parameters from the equivalent circuit. These two methods are shown to be equivalent in a narrow band, and their constants related. The obtained results are compared with full-wave simulations and measurements, and it is shown that both methods give accurate approximation in one octave frequency band. The derived analytic expressions are suitable for study of resonant phenomena, with potential practical applications for filters, phase shifters, delay lines, and sensors.

A miniaturized high-isolation quadplexer with wide upper-stopband based on open and short stub-loaded multimode-resonator is proposed in this paper. Based on the theory of multimode-resonator and stepped impedance resonator (SIR), the compact quadplexer is designed by using multimode-resonator and SIR. In order to further miniaturize the size of the circuit, the multimode resonator is employed as the common resonator to replace the common matching network of the quadplexer and the SIRs are curved. Equivalent topology circuit is given to analyze and design the quadplexer. Detailed analyses are given according to the equivalent circuits. The proposed compact quadplexer working at central frequencies of 1.8, 2.4, 2.8, and 3.5 GHz with over 40 dB isolation is finally simulated, fabricated, and measured. The measured results agree well with the simulated ones. The total size of the fabricated quadplexer is 0.36 λg × 0.42 λg.

Since last decades, microwaves have received tremendous attention as an interesting tool for material characterization. In general, standard microwave measurement methods require cutting and polishing of samples to put it in a suitable waveguide or cavity. However, several methods have been developed in order to permit a non-destructive measurement. A well-known method is based on coaxial open-ended waveguide, which is used as a sensor for dielectric characterizations. Moreover, with the requirement of new forms, developing mathematical model for each one is not convenient. Indeed, the complex structures required in the industrial field can be perfectly designed with high-performance three-dimensional software. Many attempts have been done to solve the conversion problem by proposing different algorithms. Nevertheless, they are sensitive for complex structure that contains transition part. In this paper, we propose a dielectric measurement method based on the use of coaxial waveguide. A novel algorithm for dielectric characterization of complex structures is also presented, which is based on the joint use of artificial neuronal networks and finite element method. The proposed algorithm aims to find the dielectric characterization for complex structures. Experimental evaluations applied to solid and liquid dielectrics confirm the validation of the proposed algorithm.

This paper presents a 31 GHz integrated power amplifier (PA) in 28 nm Fully Depleted Silicon-On-Insulator Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (FD-SOI CMOS) technology and targeting SoC implementation for 5 G applications. Fine-grain wide range power control with more than 10 dB tuning range is enabled by body biasing feature while the design improves voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) robustness, stability and reverse isolation by using optimized 90° hybrid couplers and capacitive neutralization on both stages. Maximum power gain of 32.6 dB, PAEmax of 25.5% and Psat of 17.9 dBm are measured while robustness to industrial temperature range and process spread is demonstrated. Temperature-induced performance variation compensation, as well as amplitude-to-phase modulation (AM-PM) optimization regarding output power back-off, are achieved through body-bias node. This PA exhibits an International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors figure of merit (ITRS FOM) of 26 925, the highest reported around 30 GHz to authors' knowledge.

A mathematical model of variable inclination continuous transverse stub (VICTS) antenna for low sidelobe design is proposed in this paper. VICTS antenna is an antenna with continuous transverse stubs on the parallel-plate waveguide and additional branches attached to the transverse stubs to generate radiation. The antenna using this technique has high aperture efficiency and keeps a significant solution for high-gain antenna. However, the sidelobe level (SLL) of this antenna is relatively high and increases continuously as the pitch angle decreases. This paper presents a fast calculation model for the SLL of VICTS antennas using leaky-wave theory and antenna array theory. The full-wave simulation results and model calculation results are in good agreement, so this model can be used for SLL suppression of VICTS antennas in different frequency bands. By controlling the aperture field distribution to be tapered, the SLL is suppressed to − 23.7 dB using this mathematical model.

An ultra-wideband (UWB) highly compact bandpass filter with extremely high passband bandwidth is presented. The proposed structure is made using three-staged stepped-impedance lines and a composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) synthesized with meander fractal like ring slot in the ground and series capacitive gap in conductor strip. The capacitive gap in conductor strip and meander fractal like ring slot in the ground plane play major role for controlling the lower and higher cut-off frequencies. The equivalent circuit model of proposed filter is demonstrated and lumped parameters are extracted. A prototype is fabricated to experimentally validate the performance of proposed filter. The proposed UWB filter has extremely wide −10 dB return loss passband bandwidth from 3.14 to 18.26 GHz with relative bandwidth of 142% and insertion loss better than 0.5 dB. Also it achieves a wide upper-stopband from 19.7 to 24.4 GHz with insertion loss better than 13.0 dB, return loss <1.5 dB and sharpened rejection skirts outside the passband at both lower and upper frequency ends. Good agreement is found between simulated and measured results with measured group delay variation in the passband <0.65 ns.

The use of 130-nm CMOS for power amplifiers at 20 GHz is explored through a set of power amplifiers as well as transistor level measurements. The power amplifiers explore single versus cascode configuration, smaller versus larger transistor sizes, and the combination of two amplifiers using power splitters/combiners. A maximum output power of 63 mW at 20 GHz was achieved. Transistor-level characterization using load pull measurements on 1-mm gate width transistors yielded 148-mW/mm output power. Transistor modeling and layout for power amplifiers are also discussed. An estimate on the maximum achievable output at 20 GHz from 130-nm CMOS power amplifiers, based on findings in this paper and the literature, is finally presented.

In this paper, a new method based on a genetic algorithm and Minkowski Island fractal is proposed for multiband antennas. Three-antenna configurations are chosen to validate the proposed optimization procedure. The first configuration is a wide-band antenna, operating in the WLAN (wireless local area network) UNII-2C band. The second configuration is a dual-band antenna, operating in the WLAN UNII-2 and UNII-2C bands. In contrast, the third is a tri-band antenna operating in the UNII-2, UNII-2C, and UNII-3 bands. The optimization process is accelerated by using the Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Application Programming Interface which allows all genetic operators to be performed in MATLAB while the numerical calculations are running in the internal CST Finite-Difference Time-Domain -solver using parallel computing with GPU acceleration. All three designed configurations are manufactured using a $\textstyle0.8\;\text{mm}$ thick FR4 epoxy substrate with a relative dielectric constant of $4.8$. The return loss and the radiation pattern’s measurements agree well with the simulation results. Further, the methodology presented can be very effective in terms of size reduction; the designed antennas are $24 \times 24 \times 0.8\;{\textrm{m}}{{\textrm{m}}^3}$ ($460\;{\textrm{m}}{{\textrm{m}}^3}$).

A novel wideband reflectarray antenna (RA) is designed for 5G millimeter (mm) wave communications in the frequency range of 26.5–36 GHz. The proposed unit cell is constructed using a grid periodicity of 0.52${{\lambda }_0}{ }$ that offers 636° phase change through phase delay lines (PDLs) (${{\theta }_{\text{s}}}$). These PDLs are attached to the outer end of the unit cell comprising semi-circular rings. Bandwidth enhancement is achieved by incorporating a corrugated slot technique and a suitable air gap beneath the substrate. The proposed center-fed reflectarray is composed of 513 elements distributed in a circular aperture (13.46${{\lambda }_0}$). Using mirror-symmetrical distribution of the unit cells, a cross-polarization reduction as low as −50 dB is realized. At 30 GHz, RA has a measured peak gain of 28.2 dBi, a sidelobe level of −14.3 dB, and an aperture efficiency of 31.4%. The prototype antenna is fabricated, and the simulation results are experimentally validated. The measured 1-dB and 3-dB gain bandwidths of the proposed reflectarray antenna are 31.3% and 41.6%, respectively. The proposed broadband reflectarray can be a potential choice for inter-satellite services like inter-satellite networking/satellite positioning and control; fixed satellite services such as GPS satellite synchronization and data direct to home TV; and satellite position fixing.

Frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar systems profit from increasing the absolute bandwidths of the generated frequency chirps to improve range resolution. As the relative bandwidth of SiGe-voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) is limited to about 80%, increasing the center frequency fundamentally or via frequency multiplication is the most direct way to increase that absolute bandwidth. However, as some applications require penetration depth, which dramatically decreases with frequency, other solutions are necessary. Therefore, state-of-the-art concepts rely on the down-conversion of generated frequency chirps via two separately stabilized frequency sources. This article implements a novel architecture, offering relative bandwidths of >100% within a single phase-locked loop (PLL). Therefore, two VCOs at different center frequencies are fed into a down-conversion mixer, whose output is directly stabilized via that PLL with one loop filter generating both tuning voltages. Those circuit blocks can be summarized as one equivalent VCO, offering a higher relative bandwidth and a significantly more linear tuning curve. Thereby, a solution to limited relative bandwidths with high VCO gain variation of single VCO synthesizers is offered while substantially reducing the hardware and implementation effort compared to the state-of-the-art.
